I've actually had an okay experience at the Rooftop. If you want better service from the staff, I highly suggest that you come right when the Rooftop opens. The place fills up FAST. I ordered their unicorn cumshot, and it was my favorite drink during my first experience of bar hopping. The second drink on the tab was their jollyrancher shot. I recommend both if you like your alcohol sweet. I only wish that I could've taken more than a sip of both, but I was the designated driver. The rooftop also has outdoor seating and a packed dance floor. If your wasted enough, they have poles you can climb up like a stripper and swing around to release your inner beast. The rooftop doesn't have designate parking, so you'll have to find parking elsewhere at San Marcos downtown. read more

I've never left a yelp review before... WORST bar experience I have ever had in my entirety of nightlife. I've never had a forceful/intentional aggression by a man before, mind you this was the MANAGER of this bar. I proceeded to get a water after my friends of the LGBTQ community were escorted out of the bar for being in the same restroom as me. A female bartender working that night was "uncomfortable" with the fact that they were in the restroom with me. Flash forward I go to sip my water I got from the downstairs bar and offer my friend a sip and the manager forcefully pushed my glass of water into my leg and spilled the whole drink down my jeans. I understand independent businesses have policies but this WAS NOT a way to handle a situation. Extremely homophobic bar that will not hold back from getting aggressively physical with female customers. After opening a series of successful bars in Austin, TX, the owners of the Rooftop Bar decided to expand their game and take their talents south to San Marcos where the student population ravenously awaits the opening of any new establishment where they can purge their sins in the hot summer heat with cold libations of a less than holy sort. A lot of hype has surrounded this establishment and that could clearly be seen on opening night where the line stretched well beyond the sidewalk, even making it into the road at times. As long as the line appeared, it moved fairly quickly, and I was inside the bar before I knew it. Comprised of two story building, you immediately enter into an outdoor patio area, well stocked with plenty of seating and even a massive flat screen, enough to entice the desires of any sports fan into an alcohol-infused Sunday Funday for the ages. Upon entering the downstair portion of the building, you find several tables and a long bar staffed by several pretty ladies who do nothing but improve upon the curb appeal of the bar. Large air conditioning ducts sat high upon the ceiling, poised to dispense cool blasts of arctic air from deep the building. As excited as I was to see these monstrous, metal ducts, I felt an absence of cool air from the moment I entered the establishment. Granted, it is the beginning of summer as well as opening night of a new place, I still expected more in this department. After collecting a few drinks and hob-nobbing with some people downstairs, we made our way back outside and up the stairs to 2nd level. The room was packed. Great design gave this place a very upscale feel and the crowd was certainly reacting to it. An elevated platform gave the DJ plenty of vision over the crowd as he worked his trade and gave opening night a well played soundtrack for the evening. Tons of beautiful people packed the dance floor and the outside "rooftop" as well. Packed as this joint was, getting a hit was still relatively easy. No more than a few minutes wait got you any drink you could desire from the bar, and usually a little more conversation than you would be used to at your average establishment. At $3 dollars per beer, I didn't cringe every time I bought a round for the boys, and liquor pricing wasn't too shabby either. Plenty of familiar faces came in and out the doors of Rooftop that night, a fact that always accounts for something. The sensation of meeting up with old friends and throwing back some drinks, in a good atmosphere, always has a good feeling. The Rooftop on the Square is certainly a place that's great for that, large enough to pack in the people, small enough for everyone to know your name. Here's my Saturday night experience: We had never been to the square before, saw a what should have been cool bar, walked in, and saw that you even had $3 shot specials on a Saturday night. So, we went to the bar, (the 2 of us) and ordered the following: 2 Lemon Drops A vodka press A berry vodka and sprite The bartender stuck is palm in my face and said "TOO COMPLICATED, NEXT!!" And turned to the person next to me and asked what they wanted instead. EXCUSE ME?!?!? I ordered 2 shots from YOUR shot menu, a call, and a well, and your staff couldn't handle that??! OR should I say "Didn't want too." Not only was this RUDE, but if your bartender didn't want to work, he should find another job. If your staff doesn't want to pour shots on a Saturday, then don't offer specials. And, if your staff doesn't want to do anything but open beer, then get rid of your liquor and / or train your staff. read more

In a first, yelp decided to remove my original review because "it did not provide enough detail about your customer experience." This was probably a kindness to the establishment, but that experience was memorable enough for me to flesh it out in more detail. I will start (again) by saying that I'm not a huge fan of sports bars in general. This one was no exception. It was a lot like a frat party at the snobby frat house. Not the one where all the really rich kids are, but the one where the sorta rich kids who think they're better than you, are. Only they're not better than you. They're not better than anybody.  It was really loud, and it was not at all clean. The menu I was presented with was covered with...something. Not exactly grease, I don't think, but greasy. The restroom was pretty bad, but it was busy and kinda late. Why bother cleaning it after the business opens? Maybe I should have peed earlier and elsewhere. I might have been able to at least use soap to wash my hands if I had. Service was grudging and surly. I half expected the bartender to climb a ladder and begin rolling barrels down a series of ramps. Instead, he served very inconsistent drinks. Some fairly generous and some nearly virgin mocktails.The drink prices, had the drinks been uniform, were not outrageous.  The food prices seemed reasonable, too, until you actually got the food. Portion size was fine, but the quality was lacking in the items I tried. The chips were overcooked but surprisingly not crunchy. The guacamole was between green and brown. The salsa was okay. Others that I was with ordered sandwiches and fish tacos, but other than snagging a couple of pretty pedestrian fries, I can't comment first hand on that, so I won't. Hey, I'm not really their target audience. That's good for them, and I'm glad to have found it out when I did. If I'm ever with someone else who wants to go, I'll realize I'm hanging around with the wrong type of people. read more

One of the managers/owners had been sitting next to us the whole time staring at his phone or eating or telling us how cool their bar is and how they want Nephews and Green Parrot to be pushed out. Nigga, Nephews (although a bar I dislike) and Green Parrot are a mainstay in SM for a reason. So that guy sent the BT to change the soap. Then we decided to close out. I reminded the BT I still would like to wash my hands. Seemed like forever until the owner/manager guy said the bartender was having issues replacing the soap. When I went back the floor was wet and there was a Hill Country Fair hand sanitizer sitting on the sink. Don't go here if you plan on paying with a credit/debit card !! Service was great, drinks were great and at a good price....only thing is the next day I checked my bank statement and they charged my card for more than what they should have. Nice try rooftop..you will never catch me in a situation where I'm too drunk to remember how much I spent on drinks ! And their phone number goes straight to busy and management was rude and noncompliant when I asked for a refund and wanted to confirm with proof of my receipt. Been going to this bar for years. Recently I attended the square for a friends birthday and as a group (20-30 ppl) we decided to go to "rooftop." I stand in line for 20-30 mins. I get to the front and one bouncer let's me in and as soon as I start to walk in another bouncer stops me and says he can't let me in because of my Air Force ones. Nelly would be upset if he found out about this. After all it's highly likely this club still plays his music to get people dancing and generate money. "Hot in here" and "Air Force ones" are two examples. Prior to that I went with Jordan's on and the same thing happened. Two of the most popular/common shoes known to man. Profiling someone's character because they wear nikes or Jordan's is absurd and senseless. Walked in, the mgr and the bartender were sleeping on the bar. Waited a few mins, they woke up, served me an over priced beer then preceded to tell me the rooftop was closed, after I already orders my drink. I was waiting on a group of 5 ppl, finished my beer and had them meet me at Harpers due to the rooftop not being open and very poor service. That was my first experience. The two other times I was dragged there by ppl wanting to check it out because it's the "new bar" in SM, the rooftop was again and again closed. This was a Friday, Sat and I believe Thursday. I just think if your going to call yourself Rooftop On The Square then your rooftop should probably be open. This bar sucks. Don't waste your time. Small, really cheap extreamly wiggly furniture/tables, overpriced and to clean for San Marcos and again...the rooftop is never open.. Nothing at all like the Austin version. Absolutely terrible people working there. I was not let in on my birthday because I was wearing classic timberlands. I was wearing nice jeans with a black pearl snap. The door man refused to let me in because of my boots stating that I looked "ghetto." I asked him what the purpose of banning timberlands was and he responded with "they are n***er shoes." Horrible new bar in San Marcos. It is always crowded. The first time I went there this blonde bartender woman/girl was so rude. I had stood waiting for over ten minutes to get a drink. She would constantly serve others around me and I was irritated by this time. I never wave down bartenders because I know how annoying it can be, but I asked if she was ever going to get to me. All she did was look at me, turn around, and help others. I then tried to get a drink for a guy at the bar. I said I have been waiting over 15 minutes, she wont make my drink , so can you. He then got a crazy power trip and started to yell at me saying they will get to me when they want and they do not have to serve me if they do not want to. I was just shocked and appalled at all of this. I have never been treated this way. I hope they have been fired or perhaps are not working there anymore. Grimm outlook may be ahead.... It started with the no personality door guy and then the $4 for a can of Shiner that had the aluminum popping out on the bottom of the can (must have gotten a discount from the distributor.) I was caught off guard at $8 for the two cans of disfigured Shiner beer and kinked the waitress to only $1 for her tip. I usually tip at least $1 per drink but when I asked for two shiner beers I was blown away that they were cans and not bottles and also the high price tag. Walked out to see the roof top view.... but it wasn't much of a view.... Everything is for sale or for rent in down Town San Marcos and the streets look dark when you're off the square. One drink and we're out....... I don't see us returning, but will feel bad if they don't make it. I really don't understand how these kids can afford to drink at places like this when there are Soooooo many other places in San Marcos with awesome beer specials... This bar has something for everyone. Food and a laid back atmosphere in the afternoon/evening and then the party really gets going around 11pm and later. The food is pretty good. I personally recommend the fish tacos. This bar is on the upscale side for San Marcos, so the drinks are comparatively more expense, but not by much ($1 per drink in price difference or so). read more

The "hip" atmosphere of this place certainly upscales San Marcos a bit. The bar is nice and the staff seems to be on their toes and friendly. The kitchen is now open so I got my standard burger (which I was told was "awesome" by the bartender). It was nothing more than a standard Angus patty on a bun with the usual acrutrements. I opted for a side salad instead of fries and was pleasantly surprised when I received a spinach salad with some feta cheese. Very nice. I think what the turnoff of this place was - the drink prices outside of the specials. 3 bucks for a Bud Lite in San Marcos is quite a hit. Also there is NO parking, so you have to find a place on the street, which might be an issue. It's an odd location and I hope these guys have done their research because even with a big student population San Marcos can't sustain all these bars. They need to break out and differentiate a bit, and with no parking so far from campus that might be an issue. read more
