    Jack's Roadhouse

They call it a…read more"Roadhouse" which I guess is another word for "dive bar", but in the most flattering sense of the word. However, let me clarify. Jack's is not a hipster dive bar. You will not hear greasy-haired young men wearing their girlfriends' pants telling you about this place and how you've probably never heard of it because only people in the know really know about it. I can guarantee you that no one at Jack's has ever heard of Animal Collective, and nor do they care to. Jack's is a genuine Texas roadhouse. Being a Wednesday night, the crowd was small and there seemed to be a lot of regulars. The two gals working behind the bar were really friendly and stopped to talk with everyone sitting at the bar for a bit while still keeping up with people's drink orders. The atmosphere was as friendly as the bartenders, and by the end of the night everyone was joking with everyone else and pretty much just having a great time. Everyone who went up to sing karaoke was given a rousing round of applause afterwords, no matter how good or bad they might have been. People were smoking inside, but they have a lot of fans going and the ceilings are relatively high, so the air didn't seem that smoky. The decor inside kind of defies description, but let's just say that there were a whole bunch of bras and thongs glued to the ceiling above the bar and no explanation was offered as to why, though I didn't ask. I'll have to ask next time. After one visit, this place has become my favorite bar in San Marcos. I will definitely be going back. I might even eventually muster up the courage to sing at karaoke night.

I see a lot of complaining so let me throw my 2 cents in on a few things, and no refunds;…read more - I will not knock the overcharging bar tenders. I know nothing about this, but thank you for the heads-up on it. I haven't experienced it, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. - The owner is Taxi, he plays the drums at the bar. His job is to engage the audience. Don't complain when you are being encouraged to join in, just join in. Don't want to join in? Sit in the back of the bar. - I was here when it was J's Bistro, and when J's actually opened. Yes, I'm an alumnus. It's the same thing, but with a different owner. That can change things, but it seems like he's trying to open the bar up for more interesting events; bands, open mic night, etc. Again, it's just like J's so don't compare the two like their ever so different. - It's a bar people, not a 5 star restaurant. - It's also in a college town, so it's not the same expereince when you're not in your mid to early twenties. My sister, brother-in-law, my best friend, and I return every year for homecoming and always come to Taxi's, formally J's, for some fun and drinks. We've even adopted a tradition, which Taxi and the piano player(s) don't like but a $20 encourages them to play the song anyway. We don't order food, but when I went to school in San Marvelous I wasn't exactly impressed with anything. Thankfully, the "bistro" has been removed, because this was never a bistro to begin with. It does get crowded, and I've seen this place so packed that it's pointless to move. Last year, 2012, it started out crowded until the bar crawl group of drunken frat boys and sorority girl left. Only then were we able to find a table. We mostly laugh it off because we were all young on campus once, only I wasn't a drunken idiot and hopefully they avoid this place when I'm there. I don't like the smoke. I haven't smoked in 3 years. It irritates my eyes, it inflames my sinuses, and I stink. I understand that there are smokers, but until they change the laws down there I'll just have to suck it up for one night a year. It would be nice if there was no smoking indoors. We have experienced poor service, but it's a bar and they don't hire career servers/bar tenders...unless they do now. You just do your best to remember who your server is, and try to close out before the mad rush at the end of the night. Sometimes you will get a great server, so tip them well. This place is fun, but being in a college town you have to deal with some compromises. It's nostalgic for me to go here, and I have stories from back in the day as well, so we try to go for homecoming. One thing I'd like them to do is learn other songs, or newer songs. I do get tired of hearing the same stuff. CHEERS!

I will admit that my social battery corroded while here, so the last bit of time, I was just done. I know I am rapidly aging out of college bars and that atmosphere, but the most questionable people here were clearly older than me. There's a lot of space in Nephew's. The leftmost room seems pretty open, the middle is the dance floor where the DJs work out of, and the right room has all the photo op spaces. I spent most of my time in the middle. The DJs were great, playing all the club heaters everyone wants to hear. The variety from classic and new hip-hop to reggaeton was appreciated by all except this one white guy with a combover who lost all his sauce when it was a song with lyrics he couldn't understand. There was a guy with his partner who was trying to start dance circles. It was weird because his buddy in the Looney Tunes beanie reached over to grab my friend's drink twice. Like back up, buddy, no free handouts. The bottle service here seems a little out of control because the people ordering it were so unreasonably drunk that we got to watch two basically create a baby and another person shake their bones because they had nothing to really shake. I don't really believe in bottle service as a concept, especially at a college bar. Other fond memories were of me watching a three-person grind line. I wanted to join, but I was nervous to ask. As a whole, the place is just a mess of drunkenness. The floor is confusingly sticky and the people are confusingly sticky too. It made for great people watching. RIYL: Degeneracy
