The staff is horrible. The refused to give me back my property and lied about having it when I have an AirTag. Had to stand by the managers office and show that my wallet was in there. Had excellent service from Zoe and Marie yesterday while watching football at Harper's. They were attentive, fun, speedy, and polite to not only the group I was with, but to all patrons. Drinks were poured well and clearly made with knowledge and confidence. Coming from a GM of a bar, it's nice to see a crew work so well together and with a passion for the business they are in. I've only been here a handful of times and I always get pretty decent service, but yesterday stood out as the best I've gotten -- I felt a good review was warranted. Good job! read more

GREAT FAMILY SPORTS BAR AND GRILLE with brick-oven pizza and grilled sandwiches in a cool historic building on the Hays county courthouse square in downtown San Marcos. They have many HD TVs tuned to different sports channels so there is something for everyone. We count 27 TVs here so if you don't get your fill of sports here, it's your fault!! We walked in and they had UFC on the 4-screen HD big screen. We are NOT about brutal fighting, but the owner immediately recognized that this programming was not optimal for us. He was so kind to put something else on those screens for us. Our 12 year old will have a happy experience here as a result. We ordered the Margherita pizza, a cheese pizza with custom toppings and the Big O grilled sandwich. The Big O came out hot and gooey with melted cheese in a fresh bread roll, seasoned well with yummy turkey and fresh tomatoes. Margherita pizza arrived with hot and steaming with melted cheese and just the right about of garlic, with fresh flavourful tomatoes arranged in a pleasing pattern. This pizza looked as good as it tasted. When in San Marcos, this is a great casual place for a nice brick-oven pizza and some exciting sports. read more

We came here 2 weekends ago so my love could watch his 49ers and I could watch my cowboys game. i always feel bad for him b/c he never gets to have volume for his games..but I usually do b/c let's face it, its america's team. BEER & FOOD: Anyway, this place wasnt the one we were looking for but it had a sign that said ALL NFL GAMES.. that's all we needed to see. We walked in, buckets of beer were cheap - and in the middle of our bucket they rang the bell and announced the food was ready in the back and for everyone to help themselves. So we did. It was fried catfish (so good), coleslaw, and huspuppies, beans, etc. So good. omg the spread was awesome and delish. I kinda wished I lived in San Marcos instead of round rock (pretty far) otherwise Id be in here more often. There was a table of guys behind us that was like oh it must be like an AYCE Buffett, but I got mine for free! (poor guy had no idea it was free for everyone) but if that's what does it for you.. go right on ahead. Couldnt beat it for $10 a bucket of miller, 2 AYCE lunch catfish meals plus tip. Nice... ATMOSTPHERE: I liked the atmostphere a lot. it had a super chilled out vibe. Didnt like that you could smoke (but I did feel like i was in vegas w/ that part of it). The back area where the RR are felt super haunted! I was in the ladies room and just as I closed the door to the stall I heard someone else walk in and door their business. As I walked out to wash my hands, there was nobody else in the entire RR but me! There is literally no way she could have walked out before me (even if she didnt wash her hands- cochina!) Haunted is all I gotta say. BUt I'd still go back b/c the rest of the bar had a chilled out vibe. The bartenders (girls all of them) didnt seem like the sharpest. The service is terrible as represented by their "bar manager" tonight wearing a "You Can't Spell Cock sucker without, OU". I'm all for team spirit but be serious. You're tending to Texas State students and you are at the wrong bar. He also looks like he doesn't want to be there. He was terrible to my group of friends and it was so hard to get attention. I don't care if anyone takes my opinion and listens. After a personal visit everyone will learn the type of service this bar provides and it's below average. That's hard to do in San Marcos. That is why places like Bar Fish, and Nephews will prevail because they provide a sense of community and family in a town where being close matters! Based on the physical appearance of this bar, I thought it would be a bit more upscale than the typical college-town fare. However, the only wine available comes from a box, the cigar smoke can be overpowering (& I don't mind a good cigar) and the sloppy rounds of shots breaks that facade pretty quick. I had heard that this was a sports bar, but the sports memorabilia is mixed with British Pub decor, guitars and other unrelated items. The bar attempts a classic, pub style, lending it the appearance of maturity and setting it apart from the pseudo-club look of many bars along the square. The actual bar takes up much of the space's middle, making the surrounding seating somewhat awkward, especially for groups of 4+. Drinks are standard square prices. I've never had bad service here, though I've never had great service either. For those looking for a banging night out on the square, Harper's makes for a decent starter location, as people tend to move on to raucousier joints after 1am. read more

OK, "Harpers Public House" is the bar on the first level of the orange brick building that says "Harper's Hall" on the top of the building. The are 2 different bars upstairs on other levels which accounts for the multiple listings at this address. It is to the right of the "Coffee Pot" (...which is the front of the Tap Room). Don't expect to get much in the way of craft beer here. I asked the bartender if they had any IPAs or hoppy beers, he said "No" and immediately suggested I might be more comfortable next door at the Tap Room. I said "Thanks anyway" and ordered the Leinenkugel Seasonal - Oktoberfest (in December). Apparently they don't even sell much "Crafty" beer here either. The Real Ale Fireman's #4 was the only local option. The higher points of this establishment are the Foosball and (mini-) Shuffleboard tables. The shuffleboard was free, the foos was $1 I think. Shuffleboard table has serious slant in the middle, but still fun of course. As far as crappy college bars go, this one isn't too bad. I didn't see any food or menus. read more

Wish I could give it a negative. Went in last night with my cousin visiting town as he was trying to order a few drinks the bar tender told him if he wasn't going to tip he would not be served. So my little cousins tried giving him 5 dollars as a tip and the bar tender turned it down. And told him not to come back to the bar and told the other bars close to Harper's not to serve us. I could understand if we were drunk but that was the first bar we went to for the night the bartender was a short mexican American male with a beard I will never go back there or any of those bars that are e owned by the same owner again. I have lived in San Marcos for about 4 years now. To top it off it wasn't even that packed for him to be so busy that he would only serve people that tipped I usually tip well because I know how it could be but come on it was his first time too the bar to order drinks. read more

Bouncer pocketed my REAL ID because he didn't know what my state's ID was supposed to look like and REFUSED to give it back. Are you kidding me? You're going to STEAL my ID because you're "not sure?" complete BS. Im 6'0", 24 years old, and routinely get mistaken for being older than my age. I've never been treated this way. My friends left anyway as nobody was inside, had to waste 30 minutes flagging a cop to tell the guy to give it back. Ruined the flow of my night. Stay away. read more

I've been going to harper's since I was going to college in this town. I'm currently living in Austin and just came down for a cousins graduation. When we arrived to harper's, which is a place i recommended, the kid at the door asked me for what year I was born. Keep in mind, I have never been asked this question in San Marcos or Austin, i told this young man my age, and then he said I did not answer his question and would not be allowed in.... This is a first for me, as I gave the young man my id, which showed my date of birth, and after telling him my age, he then refused my entry.... he was a young hispanic youth, and sadly our party had to go to the next bar, as I was planning to pay for the next few rounds that night... It is regrettable that Harper's has begun hiring youth's that prefer to turn away services these days, as San Marcos has many memories for me, but sadly I can't share them with my younger generations.... I went here on a Sunday night, so it was dead and mainly occupied by an older crowd. The bartender, despite only having to tend to maybe only 7 people, struggled to do it in any sort of way that resembled service. I would have to walk to the side of the bar he was at and interrupt his conversation with his friends, EVERY time I ordered a drink. The service made it extremely easy to confidently sign my tab with $0 in the tip box, making solid eye contact as I handed it back. Never going back. read more

Potential? Yes. Quality service? God no. One bartender I had on my 21st birthday was exceptionally rude to my friend, and I've heard other stories about their subpar (yes, I went there) customer service. Apparently, if you reasonably confront the bartenders about their sore attitudes, they'll "man up" and call for the bouncer to escort your sober and hopelessly confused ass out the front door. The interior is decent, but rarely do I stop and reflect on any signs of genius or mediocrity. The only thing Harper's is really good for is acting as a drunken portal to the better bars upstairs. This is the best pizza in town. We have tried every pizza in San Marcos and many in Austin. We debated whether it was better than/as good as Home Slice in Austin. But the point is, they are in the same league. We are not late night bar flies, just a family in search of a good beer/pizza place. We went in early, about 5 pm. The bar is cozy and the beer, music, service, and pizza were great. I can't speak for what it is like later when it is busy. But if you go early it is a real treat. read more

Met our college-aged daughter here for late lunch on a Texas State home football afternoon. Ambiance is casual sports bar, semi-divey, especially toward the back (kind of nasty back there, actually). We sat at the bar and chewed the fat with the bartender, who kindly explained each of his brews in detail along with highlighting the menu offerings. We ordered one meat-lover's pizza (Caveman) and a full-on veggie delight. I had a locally brewed beer. More clients crawled in as we stayed, and the place became livelier. Muchos TVs everywhere, offering nearly every college football game imaginable. Food arrived in a timely manner. Brick oven pizza was very good: thin crust, slightly charred, crispy and minimally droopy, allowing for the correct manner of eating it by folding in half lengthwise and munching w/o a damned fork. This is a fun spot in a cool college town. Looking for good service and food? Look no further! read more

This is the best bar in San Marcos on the square. It is a hangout bar with a few games (darts, shuffle board). The prices are not bad. The atmosphere is relaxed and drinks are easy to get. The staff is knowledgeable in their drinks and shots which can not be said about most of the bars on the square. read more

We were excited to find out that Harper's had the NFL package, and from the menu, it sounded like they might have good pizza. One of the things that Harper's website says is "Are you looking for somewhere to eat good food and watch Sunday football with your family?" If you are, this is the LAST PLACE you want to take your family. We are new to the area, so I even called Harper's, and they said yes kids are welcome. There is a hugh difference between family and kids being allowed in, and being welcomed. First, it is a is more like a bar from then a sports eatry. It is a very dark environment, from the black walls, to dark furniture, and dark bar. It felt like I walked into a dark version of "Cheers" and was waiting for a mobster to come out. As for service, there was no service. We sat at a table, looked over the menu, decided on the pizza's and drinks we wanted to order, and waited. There were to waitresses/bartender's behind the bar, and another person checking ID's for those that can drink, and yet nobody came around to take our order. One of the waitresses/bartender's behind the bar came around to get drinks for another table, but nobody came by to take our order. After waiting for about 15 minutes, we were tired of feeling like we had infringed on local's watering hole and left. Sadly, Harper's appears not to be interested in new business, and just happy with the "regular" group they cater too. read more

I'm a very fortunate individual with a job that pays over 100k a year and would have been more than happy to spend my money at Harpers. But because I have a sleeve on my arm with a portion going to my hand I was not allowed in and will not recommend this place to anyone. Being in San Marcos (college town) and trying to be the way they are will not get them business. Even heard of people getting denied access because of wearing shorts. This is Texas, where the temperature reaches over 100 degrees in the summer, of course people are going to wear shorts and short sleeves. read more

This place has potential, but the bartenders, their horrible service and huge ego's makes the whole experience shitty. The bartenders here either ignore you or just slack off and talk to their friends. Then, when you try and get their attention after waiting a long time, they get offended and become extremely rude. Usually they're always inconsiderate about my service so I just don't tip them. But one night a bartender crossed the line with me. I have never been treated so badly by any bartender in my life. I told the bartender (don't know his name, white guy always wearing a backwards cap, blue eyes) that he was being rude and I wanted another bartender to make my drink. He whistled and called for his big friend to come kick me out. Very calmly, I asked why he was kicking me out, and he began yelling at the top of his lungs about how he had the right to refuse service to anyone. Well, don't I have the right to not receive service from you? That was the first bar I had gone to all night, so I was completely sober and trying to reason with this bartender and calm him down, but he was obviously intoxicated or just pumping too many steroids. Harper's has a very unfriendly bar staff full of typical douchebags who care more about buying shots for slutty girls they think will have sex with them than providing excellent customer service. One of a slew of new bars that opened in San Marcos after Lucy's closed, Harper's is a pretty decent place to start a night out on the square. They have a good drink selection and pretty good specials every night that can save you a buck or two. The atmosphere is pretty dark (think Taproom dark) and the air can get pretty smoky as the night progresses thanks to the low ceilings inside. Harper's does have the best dart boards in town. No plastic machines here, but honest-to-goodness cork boards with old fashioned chalk scoreboards on the side. The darts themselves are also pretty quality, so if you're a dart snob/aficionado, Harper's is definitely worth checking out. Their bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable and their servers are attentive and prompt with drink orders. The server we had this weekend remembered that my boyfriend prefers extra limes with his rum and cokes after he ordered his first one so his second rum and coke came with three lime wedges attached. They don't have a kitchen but their back door opens into the Tap Room parking lot so you can just mosey on over there for a burger and fries if you need solid calories to round out your consumption of liquid ones. read more

Evidently this place and a bar called Slackers are in the same building, and some friends and I were wanting to check them out. Our small group ranged in age from 26 to 55. Anyhow, the youngest friend was not let in because the oveweight bearded door guy said he was wearing board shorts. Please note the this place is also called SLACKERS. Also note that I was wearing cargo shorts and my friend's shorts were identical, pockets and all, except his were made of some kind of rayon fabric. I was let in, but he was not. I argued with the door guy saying board shorts don't have pockets all over, but the door guy was persistent on being a douche bag and we went to the bar next door. The bar was also DEAD as a door nail. You should avoid this place because they hire disrespectful Cave People. My friends are done with San Marcos and abruptly returned to Austin that night. read more

Friday night me and some friends were welcoming a friend back from boot camp and we decided to go to Harper's. We spent maybe two hours up on the rooftop at Harper's Hall. The bartender that was serving us was great, but the other bartender- not so much. He was unhappy with the fact that my friend was wearing a pair of sunglasses in the bar and they way she reacted to him telling her to remove them, so he told her to "shut the f*** up." After a few minutes of fighting her, he pushed his way through a bouncer to get to where we were and said, "Get the f*** out," multiple times, all while gritting his teeth. They asked us to leave and because I was sober and the DD I asked them if I could grab the rest of my group, gather my belongings, and we would go. The bouncer that was there and the bartender agreed that this was okay. While doing so and waiting for her to get her card back, I looked over and the bar tender went to grab my friend, so I tried to step in front of them. I was then put in a choke hold and dragged out of the bar. The same person that did this also threatened my girlfriend stating, "I will beat the shit out of you," even after she was outside. I later found out that the bouncer who assaulted me wasn't even on duty that night. He was merely at the bar. I went in this evening to discuss the situation. I was treated horribly by the doorman, as well as the other manager, so in result was told to speak to a different manager. Come to find out... he was the "bar tender." I was completely blown off about the situation and told, "Well, he (the bouncer that assaulted me) was protecting me." The night was full of events that would make me hesitant about returning, but after this incident, I will absolutely be sure to never go back. I hope that anyone reading this will take this in to consideration before allowing Harper's Public House or Harper's Hall to have their business. read more
