Devil's Backbone Tavern - dancehall stage - Dive Bars Near Me - Fischer, Texas

See all

Iconic Music Venue & Nostalgic Dive Bar If you are in the mood for a cold beer and great music, then take a scenic drive out to Devil's Backbone Tavern! It first operated as a stagecoach outpost & blacksmith shop. And it famously built the Tavern in Comal County during prohibition. It wasn't until the 1950s that a dance hall pavilion was added to the property. And while the tavern wasn't made famous through country songs, it remained a popular watering hole for the locals. Today, the new owners have helped revitalize the dance hall and brought about a renewed appreciation for this musical outpost. Some of the greatest singer/songwriters come to play at Devil's so be sure to check out the list of upcoming shows. So put Todd Snider in your playlist, check your GPS, and take a drive out to Fischer for a cold beer and great music! On a more personal note, I would love to see more listening room / storytelling type shows and album signing opportunities where artists can take advantage of the great acoustics and intimate space. Tips Basic Outdoor Bathrooms Parking is free but limited A/C units but no ceiling fans Bring cash for tips read more

Diesel is 6 bucks a gallon. That's just a little too much to listen to some gal beat up on the men of Kerrville and do free association psychotherapy on stage for two hours while two drunk lesbians start staggering around the dance floor... that's just my opinion. I still get to have an opinion don't I ? read more

Can't go wrong with a classic old school dive bar and dance hall. People were dancing having a great time. Lone Star beer is now $5 - the days of $3 Lone Star are gone, but still reasonably priced considering how expensive dive things are. read more

We stopped in due to its haunted history but found that it's better than expected. It's like a mini Gruene Hall where you can sit comfortably and watch live music in one area, or sit in the bar area. Personally I loved the bar area and they've also got tabletop shuffleboard! The drinks and beers are basic ones but that's what you get in a dive bar. And this is the great kind of dive... not the other crappy type that's a trash can of a place. The bartenders were attentive and friendly. They have so many places to sit outside too. You can drink a different beer in every different type of seat they've got! read more

What a great dive bar! We drove out here from San Antonio and the views were amazing!!! I'd come again just for the drive! Ben Nichols from the band Lucero was playing one night. There was maybe ~80 people here? Maybe more idk. Seemed like a small crowd! Very intimate. He played whatever we asked for and joked around with the crowd. The service was great too. The bartenders are nice enough with such a large crowd. I will say the venue was pretty cold but also I am a big baby when it comes to the cold haha I don't think there was any food there (like at all besides some chips maybe?) I had a local beer in a bottle and a vodka soda so I cannot really say much on quality of drinks. Price was decent and what you'd expect. Maybe a tad high for being so divey but we were there for music! Would recommend if you there is a musician playing here! read more

What a gem. First, the nearby view is a must see. Then, the bar itself is great, especially on the inside. Would be a great bar on its own, but the music/dancehall takes it over the top. The Sunday afternoon crowd was a nice mellow and slightly more mature group, which was nice. Definitely alive with people then. read more

This place is *the* quintessential Texas honky tonk, hidden away on a curvy, scenic, two-lane Hill Country highway that gets its name from the many souls who have perished on its pavement. Legends say the road, hills, and stonewalled beer joint itself are all haunted. You can certainly smell the 80+ years of cigarette & BBQ smoke still hanging onto the low ceiling and eclectic decor of vintage neon, weird mannequins, and $1 bills. From Austin, you can take a lovely drive down to Driftwood, then tack over toward Wimberley, and finally follow your GPS toward Canyon Lake. When you cross from Hays into Comal County, you'll find Devil's Backbone Tavern (DBT) on your left. The venue is really 3 different areas: the small bar in the front, the wood-floored dance hall on the left side, and the tree-shaded backyard with picnic tables. Bring your greenbacks, as DBT is CASH ONLY and the ATM is hit-or-miss. As part-time Canyon Lakers, DBT has become one of our beloved stops for live music and community events. The food & drink is always reasonably priced, the jukebox is excellent (if you like classic country & Americana), and once you establish yourself as a decent human being not here to stir up a ruckus or try to city-fy this rural area, the staff & regulars crowd is generally very welcoming (at least in our "middle-aged Texans" experience). The place has changed hands a few times over the years but today is part-owned by Robyn Ludwick, a musician born and raised in the Hill Country who happens to be the sister of phenomenal Texas songwriters, Bruce and Charlie Robison. The DBT draws some excellent bands, so if you're into live music, sign up for the email list and check out the online calendar for upcoming shows. https://www.devilsbackbonetavern.com/live-music read more

Highly recommend a stop!! If just for the history alone! Alcohol doesn't hurt either. Awesome back patio, dancehall and knowing you're in a space where so many before us stood, is worth every second. Pretty incredible art too! read more

We went for a concert that had been advertised on their social media. It was advertised for $10. When we got there it was $15. I tried to leave a comment on their social media so that other people would see that they needed to bring an extra $5, and they deleted my comment, which tells me it was entirely done with intent. The concert was great, and worth the $15 but what is the purpose of lying on social media? We brought 5 people, so it was an extra $25. We'll definitely go see Thomas Michael Riley again, but we won't go back to the Devil's Backbone. I don't support outright liars. Ambiance was great. Facility was clean. Management leaves a lot to be desired. read more

Lovely lively music venue and dive bar. The crowd was great... both locals and folks who traveled to the venue for the artist playing that afternoon. We came in from Houston to see Toni Price... we were not disappointed! We met a number of folks from the area along with travelers from around the US, England and China. All very friendly and happy to be there--- great vibe! Parking was ample, beer was cold, good AC (it was august in Texas), plenty of space to dance if you were moved to do so. read more

The perfect Wimberly dive bar. Cash only, but a lot of character. The cash only is exemplified by the ceiling and walls being covered in $1 bills. The bartender was delightful and the crowd was welcoming. read more

Historic tavern that should be on everyone's list of places to visit in Texas We enjoyed 2 Tons of Steel's concert.

This is a fun dive bar to visit for a beer or two. The decor will keep you looking all evening. The crowd is a mix of locals and tourists, and everyone was friendly. We saw a concert in the dance hall, and that was a really fun, intimate venue with a decent sound system in the hall. There was plenty of parking and it'a a nice drive out to the tavern. First off...this place has changed owners so many of the reviews are out of date. Smoking is NOT allowed inside. Yes, it's still CASH ONLY. They have a FULL BAR (not just set-ups for the hard stuff). This is a wonderful, rustic place. They are bringing in lots of great bands. The dance floor in the old barn is huge, with long rows of tables and benches to each side of that dance floor. For the cooler months, they have a toasty wood-burning firebox to help get you warm in the dance hall, and a beautiful old large fireplace in the bar area. And the bar area is a separate room, with an old bar that could have been there in the 1800's, along with matching bar stools. Staff is helpful and friendly. The ladies room is in the bar area; gentlemen get to find their facilities in a room around back (which has a tiny window with re-bar, making it look like you've been locked up! read more

This dive bar is one you can't drive past. You have to stop. The shuffle board table and juke box tell more stories about the place than most people make in a life time. Take a peek at the stage and back area. Bring cash only for cold beer, pick up a tee shirt and some memorabilia. Leave a dollar for the next time you roll through in case you fall on hard time. Place is legendary, and the drive down the Bone is beautifully read more

This was my first visit to Devil's Backbone - to listen to Miss Toni Price on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. So, what do you get when you take a divy old dance hall, line it with picnic tables, throw in some neon and honky tonk, chill the Lonestars, serve it up with some super nice staff, and serenade us all with some good music? You get an EveryDayButEspeciallySundayFunday. Stay cool, DB. I hope you never change. read more

This place is a gem. Texas hasn't been Texas for a while now, but I felt home when I walked into that bar.

One of the best little joints in Texas y'all. Seriously, it's such a genuine gem. Always one of my favorite places to visit when ever I get the chance. May be my new favorite place in the Hill Country! Wandered in on a Saturday about noon and spent a couple hours day drinking! This place is home. Beautiful old, nostalgic bar made of stone. Michelle was an amazing bartender, taking care of the paying customers, and the wandering non paying question askers and direction seekers as well. Beer was cold and inexpensive. If we hadn't been expected at a wedding, we would have stayed the entire day. They were having a sold out show later in the evening, the set up for it looked great. It's non-smoking indoors now so don't worry about that. There's shuffleboard, pool, and a jukebox. Take cash - but there's an ATM there if you need to grab a little more. Can't say enough about how great this place is. Can't wait to get back there and spend more time relaxing. We loved it!!! read more

Devil's Backbone Tavern - Relaxing with a couple of cold Lone Stars in a very cool place!! - Dive Bars Near Me - Fischer, Texas

It's a tiny bar that serves cold beer. Smoking is allowed inside and the ladies restroom was clean. This is a no frills kind of spot. You come to drink beer and play shuffle board. I was playing hooky from work and I guess so were the other 6 people in the bar. We met a couple of bikers who said to rub the devils head for good luck. Hint: the devil is closer than you think.
