I have yet to see such a fusion restaurant, but this Italian-Thai-Mediterranean restaurant was perched on top of a cute little shopping plaza in downtown Carmel, right by where our inn is located. Passing by and seeing the patio seating (although I was not able to experience this due to rain), I still had to give Tree House Cafe a try! The staff were very friendly and even allowed my dog inside the establishment despite closing off the outdoor seating on the nice patio. The restaurant decor was a mixture of new age crystals and stones, Western winery chic, and some Thai or Southeast Asian influences. We sat by the window, which was framed by a unique arrangement of corks strung together to form curtains. I ordered a Gyros Salad that came with two slices of pita, a generous helping of lamb meat, and yogurt sauce on the side. The pita was very standard and a bit cold, but the lamb meat strips dipped into the yogurt sauce and mixed in with the salad greens was very refreshing and extremely appetizing. I was most impressed with how crispy and juicy the lamb meat was cooked as I've never had lamb made like this. read more

Good ambience at night with the string lights around the perimeter. There are heat lamps outside between tables and umbrellas over tables. Most of the food we got was satisfactory except for the steak. The Steak of the Day was so good, juicy, with some dry parts, good flavor especially the sauce that they pour over it. I must say though, they can calm down on the pepper corns. My steak was practically covered in peppercorns. The cooked spinach hidden underneath the steak tasted a bit expired and the mashed potatoes were watered down. The prices were a bit on the high side for salads or Thai curry. This is not a good place to go for a birthday lunch or dinner as they don't have anything special for birthday celebrants, like a special birthday dessert or song. If I went back there again, I'd order the steak to go. read more

Such a fun evening! Seated quickly! We sat inside because the cold gets to us Texas folks! Great good, awesome service, fun atmosphere, and pretty views! The Mediterranean/Italian/Thai Yelp categories was enough to capture my interest (what????), but pics with beautifully presented shrimp and fish got me. Usually, when a menu is all over the place "jack of all trades", it means "master of none". Still, with the ratings so high, my gf and I had to go. As it turned out, making a reservation the day before was smart. It was, after all, a Friday night. Lines formed out the door. I felt VIP to walk past all, give my name, and immediately seated. That's where the specialness faded. While the server was nice, he was minimal. We felt like an afterthought, not getting any attention in a bustling place. [Service = 3.5 stars] The menu is intriguing, nonetheless. I would say it's primarily Italian/Seafood. A couple of Thai dishes don't make it a Thai place -- that just throws it off-kilter. After viewing Yelp pics, I had my eye on the Shrimp Pasta, and nothing else would sway me. 1. Shrimp Pasta -- Only 4 prawns with tails, the pasta was likely fresh but overcooked and stuck together. The piccata sauce was quite good with capers, and topped with a brown/red powder (sumac?). Well, it was good but not great and overpriced. Wouldn't order again. [$28, 4.0 stars] 2. The Dreaming Tree cabernet was a safe choice, but again, overpriced as I picked up the same 2013 from Costco for $13.99. [$50, 4.5 stars] My conclusion is this: make sure to sit outside on the patio, with the feel of a "tree house". It's what makes this place special. If a wee-bit cold, they have heat-lamps. It's a couple blocks off of the beaten path, and that adds to the uniqueness. Note: as it turned out, we ended up dining in Carmel at Dametra (5.0 stars) and Mediterranean (4.5 stars) the next two nights. They're all part of a wonderful family that my gf and I fell in love with. read more

Wanted to have a nice lunch on our way home from Monterey. This restaurant is located in a cute neighborhood close to the Carmel Mission. They offer mostly Italian options with a few Thai curry dishes. We started off with the calamari and it was excellent - crunchy, fresh, dipped in their tartar sauce. I really enjoyed my prawn pasta. The dish was creamy and the sauce really enhanced the overall texture and flavor of the pasta. Another member of my group however got the yellow curry and it was incredibly salty. It tasted as if the cap of their salt shaker fell off. We ended up sending it back since it was simply inedible. The waiter graciously took it back and offered us a chance to pick something else from the menu. And they also ended up didn't charge us for the replacement dish (which costed more). Overall, service was great. The outdoor dining space, albeit small, was nice and breezy. They just need to work on getting the curry right! read more

Tree House Café is literally a restaurant designed to look like a tree house. It's not only surrounded by trees, but you need to take the stairs to get to the entrance. With a name like Tree House, Italian food wouldn't be the first thing to come to mind; however, the inside of the restaurant screams ITALIAN. Around dinner time the restaurant was fairly empty, so finding a table was quick. First up is bruschetta. Three pieces of toasted bread, topped with a garlic and tomato mixture, with shaved parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. The garlic really comes through strong, leaving a sting on your tongue that lasts the rest of the meal. The tomatoes were fresh, and the mixture was vibrant and delicious. I ordered the Lasagna for dinner. I admit it was the cheapest thing I could find on the menu, and in my defense, I love lasagna anyway. The wait staff have a thing with calling the lasagna "cheeseburger". It's either a slang word they use to describe something that is cheap and cheesy, or they really love cheeseburgers. Either way, I enjoyed my lasagna. It wasn't amazing, and I've had better, but it was good, and it was definitely cheesy. The sauce I wasn't particularly a fan of. It was too mild. I want a sauce with a bit of an acidic zip to it. This wouldn't be my first choice when it comes to eating in Carmel. But, if you're in the mood for Italian food, definitely check this place out. read more

Nice outside terrace, friendly staff and great food. From the complementary bread and oil dip, New England clam chowder to the lamb stroganoff. The meal was a treat and relatively inexpensive for Carmel. They are dog friendly and had chilled steamed chicken breast for our two terriers. It's been fun living in Carmel and finding little gems like this one on our puppy walks! read more

Chicken Pesto Sandwich 8.5/10 and great if you want to eat out but don't want to spend too much 4. Lamb Kabobs 8/10 we would definitely sub the rice for something different it wasn't our favorite 5. It was average food. Beware, they charge you extra to use a credit card. They don't tell you, it's just a charge that ends up on your bill after you've already given them your card. That's terrible service and resulted in a reduced tip. read more

This spot was recommended by a couple whose opinion I value. Unfortunately, Treehouse Cafe did not live up to their recommendation. I imagine things go up and down for any restaurant, but this was beyond-- I got sick from the experience within an hour or so of my lunch. I sat at table #16, made order #48 at 3:35pm on July 11, 2022. I ordered the grilled calamari. I was not impressed with the presentation but, ehh, I went for it. Mistake. The flavor was fair. Ate that, drove into Monterrey, and was in the bathroom at the Marriot removing lunch from my system. Bad experience, knowing that I almost never get sick from food. I was violently ill. I've been back around several times since, and really want to patronize this place again, but I haven't done so. Maybe I should tell the owner my experience, and let him curate a lunch for me. For now, better to describe what happened here. I've sat on this for a while. I'm sorry my experience was this. read more

We were a large group and they were so accommodating, giving us the private room! It is a beautiful place here. The people are so friendly and welcoming. The food is so delicious here. Started out with the bread: that olive oil and parmesan with the bread... I've been to some of the most "highly rated" Italian places. Their olive oil and parmesan don't taste like this one. So flavorful! The ciopino for dinner was great! Portions were small but the prawns were ginormous. It tasted good. My fiance had the crab and lobster ravioli. Boy, he cleaned that plate including its sauce. It was amazing. Would we drive 2+ hours to come here? Probs. Coming again to try some more stuffs! Amazing place. read more

Food was alright. Here were our food ratings: Clam chowder- good Calamari - tasted great but the portion is not the same size as advertised on Yelp pics. Slightly overpriced for the amount of food. Sorry we were starving so I didn't take a picture Tuna melt- awesome! Cheese steak sandwich- my husband and daughter weren't expecting this taste. It almost felt like it had curry in it. Lasagna- my oldest daughter would orders this at every opportunity. However the herb smell was just too strong for her. She didn't finish the plate. Wished we had sat outside but it was a bit chilly. Really come here without much expectations but walked away quite happy after a lunch. Grape leave wrapped Dolma is served hot- so lovely in a windy and cold day. Thank you. This place is a little confusing... Thai and Mediterranean and Italian? Okayyyy. Let's go for it! Love the outdoor seating. Perfect for dogs, and of course lots of heat lamps for the SoCal wimps like me. Adorable ambiance. Greek music in the background. I guess this helped contribute to the fact that this place is mainly Greek with accents of Thai end Italian. What we got: - Shrimp spring rolls: meh, I found myself adding a lot of peanut sauce to amp up the flavor. Not much shrimp either. And for 12$ this kind of fell flat for me. - Clam chowder: hearty, lots of "goodies" inside, I was a fan! -Grilled salmon: Perfect. I hate when restaurants try to feature a fish and then they under season it. This dish was cooked and seasoned really well! I do think the sides could have used a little bit more seasoning but maybe they were trying to counterbalance the salt in the fish. The best meals of the night= GREEK! -Gyro plate and beef kebabs were probably the best I've ever had! Meat was well seasoned, not dry at all, kebabs were a PERFECT medium rare. The Greek rice was really good too, as was the salad. We asked for a bit more tzaziki sauce on the side too. Super impressed with this dish! Wish they had cheaper options for wines. We are no sommeliers but a glass of house wine should be a little cheaper #amiright? Good service, not great, but it was on a Monday night so you can't expect too much. Also only 1 bathroom for men and women. Not crowded at all when we went but I was still in line for the bathroom -_- Overall I would come back for their Greek food (totally their wheelhouse) and probably try their curry. Very nice for a takeout lunch. My husband got the lamb Stroganoff and I had the gyros appetizer with pita and tzatziki, and both were very tasty. The place had a pleasant atmosphere when I went to order, and the host (manager?) was very friendly. The order came up quite quickly. They have rooftop seating, and the folks up there seemed to be having a nice time. The only thing I didn't like was the salad options: everything was built off either a Greek salad or a Caesar salad. I hate Caesar salads, and the Greek salad had a bunch of ingredients that I don't like or that upset my stomach, so I would have asked for those to be left off and then ended up with lettuce and cucumber and nothing else. They had other items items that looked interesting. I would go back, though Carmel has so many other options to try that Tree House wouldn't be my first choice before I tried the others.
