As a former employee, i worked at the thrift shop for almost eight years. The thrift store is co-owned by the Travis Officers' and Enlisted Spouses' Clubs. The thrift store was established to provide a convenient way for active duty military to donate or consign unwanted personal items. The money raised by the store goes back into the local military community by means of scholarships for dependent spouses and high school seniors, as well as monetary donations to the local community.
The owners decided to abruptly terminate all the paid employees using the California At-Will law with absolutely no notice to the employees. Upon termination, we were told that this was in no way a termination due to negative behavior or actions and given letters of recommendation, yet the owners have acted as if we were all terminated for negative actions. They lied about the way they treated the employees, to include accusing some of stealing, making threats against the owners, damage to personal property, starting fires, vandalizing the building, and even picketing outside the main gate of Travis Air Force Base. All these allegations have been reported to the Security forces of the base and have no factual basis. They have committed slander and defamation against the former employees. The owners have even withheld money from the employees (money earned through consignment sales) stating that there is an ongoing investigation and the money is being held until its completion. Seems odd that they owners took their 30% commission but denied the consignor their portion. The owners have lied and miss lead the military community. They cut back on the store hours from 4 days a week to 2 days a week and only 2 Saturdays each month. The Travis Air Force Base Command Leadership has turned a blind eye to all of the owners negative behavior and does not seem to be interested in putting a stop to the negative impact the owners are creating for the business and the base as a whole.
I would recommend that if you are looking for a good trustworthy thrift store, look elsewhere. The Travis Community Thrift shop has even raised their prices, and stopped consignments. During my 8 years of employment their, it was the lowest priced, best organized Thrift store in the local community. read more
