I went to this air force base to attend an air show - let me tell you, it was phenomenal!! The entire thing was coordinated so well, from beginning to end; the foot traffic flowed smoothly and everything was wonderful. Honestly the BX had awesome sales have you buy 7 clearance items and than you get 50% off. I was able to get some Michael Kors Shoes for 18 bucks. Also I got a few other items. It's been a good minute since I've been out there I see a lot of improvements and a lot of changes I wouldn't mind living on the Base. read more

As far as bases go, this one is pretty good. I've been to many and I'm happy for the most part

The gym is open til midnight and parking is ample but the locker/shower/bathroom is smaller than even the tiny Coast Guard Island Base in Alameda. There is a running track behind the gym. The gas prices are usually no better than Safeway or civilian gas stations. The PX prices are really high but they have 5.11 clothing in the hunting section and motorcycle jackets and helmets now. The Commissary is the most worthwhile to go to with good hours and decent selection but a couple of the prices are high. The "hotel" is next to the gym/library/theater and reasonable walking distance to the "PX" (BX) The theater food prices are really high and the movie selection is odd with odd hours but the screen is good sized. MWR is kind of out of the way if you're walking. I stil haven't visited the museum I haven't been to Space A recently so I can't comment. read more

Came here today for the air show and they did not disappoint! The entire event was very well organized, and everything went smoothly from the moment we arrived. Parking wasn't nearly as hectic as we anticipated. Everyone was so friendly, and in good spirits. Besides the amazing show they put on, there's other things to do here such as walk around to check out all the different vendors etc., and grab a bite or so! Everything was really neat! Although there was a huge outcome of people, it did not feel crowded or anything. They have many port o potty's, and to be honest normally I never try to use them but because the event is quite long, it was very nice that there were many provided and they were surprisingly very clean. Great photo opportunities!! You'll definitely want to bring something to capture the fun moments! So many planes etc. to look it, you can record them flying, and even tour inside the planes! Definitely a family friendly event! I saw a jelly belly truck giving out free jelly bean packets, also saw a temporary tattoo station (free), and even a Jelly Belly jet plane! I saw lots of kids and they were all so happy and excited to be there. Come prepared!! Tip: Bring sunglasses, hat, sunblock, chairs, & a camera and you'll be all set! There's so many snacks and goodies to choose from so try something new, plus you'll be supporting local businesses! *ON A SIDE NOTE: I KNOW THIS MAY SEEM SILLY BUT I LOST A SCARF (on 5/4/14) THAT WAS VERY SENTIMENTAL TO ME HERE. IF YOU THINK YOU MAY HAVE FOUND IT, MAY YOU PLEASE INBOX ME WITH A DESCRIPTION OF IT. I'D GREATLY APPRECIATE IT! Overall, aside from being super bummed out when I realized I dropped my scarf without realizing, it was a great event! It was such a fun day and I'd love to come again! "Tragedy struck a Travis Air Force Base air show Sunday afternoon when a biplane crashed while performing aerobatics, killing the pilot, forcing an abrupt end to the event....Veteran air show performer Eddie Andreini of Half Moon Bay died in the crash." I read this from Sacbee's "Our Region" paper. It was very saddening to find out such a tragic accident happened, my heart truly goes out to his family and friends during this very difficult time. Protected community from the civilians. It has everything there (gym, theater, shops, etc.). Went to the museum inside the base. Got to go there if you can get in. The retired aircraft on display is just amazing. read more

Travis Air Force Base is a pretty great base. They have a good selection of activities as well as food options. However the best fact I know is that Travis AFB is one of the biggest special needs bases with the greatest amount of resources. I work on base as a civilian and it's great to see all the fundraiser and activities for military families with children of special needs. It's great to see such support and a community that works together. I've already been to the Autism Walk as well as one for MS. They had food and events for the kids to get involved in which they seem to all enjoy. Although having 30-40 kids running around screaming and chasing each other is not the business but it was fun. (Face painting, music, mini show, playroom, free stuff, amazing food) Show support and get involved! read more

Travis was my first base after basic training in 1955. I was OJT to learn about conventional and nuclear weapons, and was based there for 18 months before my overseas assignment in Morocco for one year. We were responsible for loading bombs on B47s, B36s and B52s. I ended up at Walker AFB, New Mexico, (now closed) for the remainder of my enlistment. Being assigned to SAC (Strategic Air Command) was the best thing that happened to me up to that point in my life. It gave me the motivation to go to college after my enlistment. Our son served in the Air Force for over 13 years and made Major. I made E4 in 15 months which I believe was pretty unusual. When stationed in Morocco for one year, I was able to R&R in Madrid, Paris and London. That's when the travel bug bit my behind. I have traveled to 88 countries since then, but at my age, I'm restricted to domestic travel. My wife and I are doing the Mississippi River Cruise in November 2017 starting in Memphis and ending in New Orleans. Interesting fact about Walker AFB: Walker AFB: "Martin-Omaha B-29-40-MO Superfortress AAF Serial No. 44-27353 The Great Artiste assigned to Crew C-15, 393rd Bombardment Squadron of the 509th Bomb Group. This aircraft was converted to Silverplate Victor number 89. This aircraft flew on both Atomic Bomb missions (6 August, 9 August 1945) as an instrument aircraft monitoring the nuclear explosions." read more

Travis is no Army post that's for sure! A theatre, bowling alley, bar, aquatic center, and more.

I've been working at Travis AFB since Sept and I have to say this is a really nice base. BX is nice; has a Starbucks. The laundromat is open 24/7. Lots of food to choose from. Chow hall is really good too. I just recently rented a Mnt Bike from the Base Outdoor Rec Center; man what a nice place. I haven't used it but I've been told the exercise facility is nice and there are multiple tracks on base. Overall if you have to travel and be assigned to a air base Travis is a great place to be. read more

I can't say I am an AFB connoisseur but I can say that being an AF wife I do know what works and what doesn't and this base does. It is clean, large and pretty easy to navigate. The people I encountered are exceptionally nice. Unfortunately, when you are on an AFB it is usually because it is dictated to you but I can say this is one you wouldn't mind being dictated to be on. read more

Very nice base, rooms in the main building of billeting are decent. They gym is also very nice.

The Passenger terminal now closes at 10:00pm. This can be EXTREMELY inconvenient if you land right when they are closing and you have no way to get a rental car. There is no way to get around the base except walk. The cafeteria was ok (food was kind of cold). The Quarters was booked solid and had no room but the front desk was nice about it. Bowling alley was nice but I thought it was expensive for being on base. read more

Love this base! I live in the bay area and during this past summer I commuted to Davis for a class 2 days a week. I always stopped by Travis AFB to kill time at get snacks/eat at the food court while waiting for traffic to die down. It's a fairly nice AFB compared to others I have been to. Hoping hubby will be stationed here in the long future when we've got the traveling experiences out of our system. read more

Ok, we were visiting my mom in the hospital for almost two weeks. I understand that budget constraints closed the hospital chow hall during weekends. It has prompted us to bring our own food from home so we don't have to leave every time we want to eat. This weekend my family was already in the dining room across from the chow hall. There just happened to be a retirement ceremony this same day. I don't know how many people came in and out of there. They must have thought that it was easier to send in the Filipino guy to "ask" us how long we were going to be. Well let's see, there's no other place in the hospital to sit and eat comfortably, so I don't know. If they needed a place to eat pizza and cake, could they have easily used the chow hall that would have fit the "100 plus" people they were feeding. Yes, they made us feel very unwelcome. read more
