We were out for a drive and had always been curious about the Base so we stopped at the gate to ask about touring. The staff at the gate were stern but helpful and personable. They told us there was a museum but we had to obtain a pass from the Visitor's Center. So off to the Center we went. The older gentleman working the desk at the Center wasn't helpful or friendly. He didn't greet us when we walked in, and had a stuffy attitude during the conversation as if we had no business there and weren't entitled to information. His answers were short and he wasn't forthcoming. We asked about a pass to tour the museum. He asked for our driver's licenses. After giving them to him he said the museum was closed that day. He returned our licenses and just looked at us. I asked if there were other areas we could tour (since we were there). His response was "you need a sponsor." I said, a sponsor? He said yes, with a military ID. Ok but that didn't answer the question and it was obvious he wasn't encouraging of "visitors" so we just left. I left wondering why have a Visitor's Center staffed by someone who couldn't care less about visitor's? read more

Travis is one of the largest Air Force Bases in the US. It's home to our largest military cargo airlift aircraft and with that comes the need for lots of real estate and... wait, I'm hearing the lyrics to a song: "Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above, Don't fence me in." Yes, lots of land but sorry, land that's also very well fenced in. Advice: contact Pass & ID prior to your visit to get your requirements down and the location of the visitor's control gate. This will save you some time and possible grief. It can also be a long drive if you show up at the wrong entrance. Travis moves supplies, cargo, and equipment all over the world and it's one of only a few bases with that primary mission and as such, Uncle Sam and the Air Force do an excellent job of keeping things operational, functional, and updated. The main portions of the base are clean, neat, and well-maintained. The facilities that most will be interested in and using, like the Exchange, Commissary, and recreation-related spots are all nice and modern. They have a great bowling alley and gym. Love this base, very clean and easy to navigate where everything is. Big base but usually always enjoy my time here. The BX is pretty small and doesnt have a big selection of perfumes, clothing, and shoes to choose from. Sometimes you'll find something nice but it's different each time. The medical hospital is well organized and clean. Optometrist was very kind and the equipment used here was very clean and my doctor was so sweet! Everyone I encountered in the hospital was very kind and helpful! I also decided to go to the Air Show and it was amazing to see! The Raptor is my favorite and love how they had many booths to check out from. Good memories and will be back soon! read more

Travis Air Force Base (KSUU) is located in Fairfield, California. The base has its origins all the way back to 1942. It is named after Brigadier General Robert F. Travis who died in a B-29 crash there in 1950. Both of its offset runways area quite long at 11,000 and 10995 feet. Travis, is the home of the 60th Air Mobility Wing, part of the USAF Air Mobility Command. It is primarily a home to C-5's, C-17's, and KC-10's. In addition as the "Gateway to the Pacific" it hosts a variety of units just passing through on they way East or West. In addition there is a USN detachment of E-6B Mercury (TACAMO) aircraft as this is considered one of their West Coast outposts (Normally they are based at Tinker AFB, in Oklahoma). The David Grant USAF Medical Center, a 200+ bed hospital is also on the base. Unless you have business or stationed on the base there is no visiting. However, it is a phenomenal place to plane spot as the various aircraft there practice touch and goes, and are in such demand you are guaranteed to catch a few. Indeed it was the opportunity to catch the LC-130H. These planes have giant ski's in addition to normal landing gear to enable snow landings. Operated by the New York Air National Guard, they are super rare. They overnight at Travis on the way to New Zealand. Pandemic Life: I've never been to an Air Force base before and was on a mission (the driver, actually) to help my 82 year old Dad renew his government ID card. Apparently they closed down all the previous places to renew like the National Guard so Travis AFB was "it" in the region. Adventuring off one morning, we headed to do Dad's bureaucratic duty. Don't do as I did and go to an offbeat entrance, google Travis Visitor's Center to get a visitor's pass if your ID is expired. We added about 10 miles to our trip by going to a side entrance gate which understandably didn't allow access for my dad's expired card. It was the "back entrance" and there were lots of nearly unpaved roads, grazing cows, and what felt like a potential Roswell incident out there. Once you have access to the base, there is a main drive that brings you to the former hospital on top of a hill (go past the antique jets on display, but don't turn Right, which will lead you on another wild goose chase...) which now hosts different administrative offices. The numbers are very confusing so again these make no sense numerically. We ended up asking two guys coming out for lunch where the ID center was, after driving around multiple times. Although I felt like I was a bumbling idiot aimlessly driving in circles, the grounds are immense, orderly, and quite impressive. The air has a hint of the Pacific and it is somewhat exciting to see the planes coming and going at the nearby field. Once inside there is a kiosk to electronically check in, which was also confusing. There was a bit of a wait for walk-ins and the odd moment of the TV, set to Netflix, showing a full on sex scene which was alternately chuckled at and apologized for when alerted, which the captive audience either ignored, watched with enthusiasm, was bemused, or partially traumatized. The groaning and panting was shut off with alacrity, and cartoons were promptly dispatched in place of the NSFW content. No children were present, so relax. ID was approved, Dad was helped handily and we left via the scenic route and duck pond, exiting from the same gates where my driver's license was initially held as we drove through stanchions fully controlled by beefy recruits with assualt rifles strapped to their chests. My first visit to an Air Force Base was educational and informative! I suddenly screamed "oh shit!" and realized that my dad had TO CONNECT HIS work email to the card and we headed back, retracing our steps this time wiser but a little wearier. Mission finally accomplished! read more

We were very happy with our visit to the airbase for the Wings over Solano air show. Lots of people attended the show so obviously long lines to get in but traffic, parking, booths, porta-potties etc, everything was really well organized and clean. Every airbase service member we interacted with was helpful and friendly. And of course, the air show itself was a blast. Today is the Air Show at Travis, the base did NOT prepare for the crowd AT ALL. We were on Air Base Parkway for 3 hours trying to get on Base. No parking, very particular at the gate with IDENTIFICATION and Contraband. Very slow to let people in. Why let the public in if you can't streamline the process??????? read more

It's the Light_skin_dragon coming to you from a military base. Whats the worse case. I get introuble for using Light_skin_dragon haha But for real this base is so huge. It's nice and clean. I enjoying being in the air force and I love what I do for the air force. I was working in the hospital setting and thr facility is so amazing and big. I get to work with patients and help them pic their food. Some might have renal, diabetic, or gluten free diets. I'm there to assist them and make sure they get their diet needs. Like I say if you can ever get on a military base you'd see for yourself. Everyone is doing a job to support the mission. Went to the Travis air show 2024 Saturday. Air show was awesome! But would not recommend paying the extra for the Flight Line Club area. $150Per person. Mediocre food. Nothing outstanding. Not enough seating under the tent area. Port a potties. Just a basic place to sit and eat. We base this on going to the Capitol Air Show in Sacramento years ago. Check out their website. Great food. Air conditioned toilets. Nice decorations plenty of room for everyone. Oh yeah and traffic was bad. Took us over 2 hours to park and maybe an hour to get in to the show area. We will probably go again but bring our own chairs and food ! read more

What can they do to improve? Go back to the last of The Good Old Days that ended in the late 1980s. Travis was like a home away from home. I worked there on weekends and holidays, living with married military friends in their beautiful off-base house for around 10 years. Sadly, both of them passed away. Holidays without them are especially painful because they were like the siblings I never had. I was always warmly introduced as their sister. read more

I like getting loaded in this place. It is so organized. And everything works here like a clock. This place truly has discipline. When I usually pick up here , I must stop at the check points open every single compartment in my truck including an engine compartment. Travis AFB is one of my favorite bases I've been to. They have a decent sized BX and Commissary. The Westwind Inn is also very nice to stay at. The bowling alley is awesome. And their gym is amazing!! Man, I guess I just miss living on base. Love military life!! read more

This is our 2nd tour here & been here for 3 years now. We came back to Travis because my husbands family is here & its so nice to be close to family again. I love it the base its since we r in the bay there is so much to do & so much to see & everything is so close to to us. Vacaville outlets, Vallejo 6 flags, Napa/Sonoma wine country, Sacramento state capital, San Francisco golden gate, Oakland RAIDERS! = ), Reno lil Vegas & lake Tahoe & so many more here. Since we r military they offer so many discounts & tours. The housing is really nice I love our neighborhoods everyone is very nice & I love the military families coz they r always there to help when u need it. This base had really change since we were here last back in 2001-2004. They had built a nice hotel with a cute lil cafe downstairs. The gym is renovated n looks great & offers babysitting with the parents takes turns watching each others kids. The BX is being renovated its a lil crazy but I know it will look great when its done. There is a lot more lil shops in front of the BX. the only lil down fall is that the schools on base is ok not the best but ok. I really miss the schools overseas DODs. read more

The Air Show is a very cool event to go to. It's free to get in and the Thunderbirds are the highlight of the show. The Thunderbirds the Air Forces version of the Navy's Blue Angles. There are a lot of planes that fly above the airbase throughout the day and there are a lot of planes to see parked on the tarmac too. Three of us ordered a cheeseburger and a Pepsi a piece at one of the stands for a total of $27.00, which is pretty steep. However, they were pretty good. The Thunderbird show is incredible. The jets are so fast and so loud. It is a must see and I recommend anyone to go there tomorrow (Sunday 5/4/14). The Thunderbirds fly around 3:00pm. The only downside is getting in and getting of there. You park right on the tarmac and there is a lot of traffic driving through the airbase and onto the airfield. Overall, it was a fun and memorable time. read more

Sometimes, I wonder if I was a military pilot in a past life. I have a passion filled crush on military planes. Growing up, we had a close family friend based out of Travis. So, many an air show we went. We were able to go inside a C-5, see the Blue Angels (a lot), and once, even witnessed a fly over of the Stealth!! Can you say visual ecstasy? Therefore, I get extra excited when I see various forms of flying apparatuses. For example: -I have almost crashed trying to call attention to anyone who will listen when the C-5s are flying over Vallejo -When President Clinton visited the Bay Area many years ago, the presidential helicopter hovered over the moth ball fleet at the Benicia bridge...and I cried. And finally, I brought three 10-year olds to the last air show here at Travis. OMG. It was HELLA hot and they were HELLA impatient. But once the Thunderbirds flew....it was all over. They were all hooked, just like me. I mean--happy happy joy joy! I truly cant wait till the next one. One last important note. When we left, there was some sort of incident where we were trapped in the parking lot for 2 hours. No water and it was about 103 degrees, in the shade. As we finally started moving and got closer to the exit, we were guided out by the USAF on duty and in full uniform. I pointed them out to the boys and we discussed what it must feel like to be in that gear and across the world in desert combat. Suddenly, being trapped in a parking lot in summer clothes for a couple of hours wasn't so bad. Thanks to Travis for this FREE event and most importantly, your service, support and protection. read more

Travis Air Force Base. Gateway to the Pacific and largest AMC base. I've experienced Travis as a dependent, AD member, and now as a spouse dependent. It's definitely crazy to think that I had the opportunity to be stationed here after growing up in the area. So much has changed since my dad first got orders here in 1990. The gym used to be smaller, just one building for the BX/clothing sales, pool and outdoor recreation new location, etc. All changes for the better, of course. Pride does a great job with the upkeep around base! Note to civilians: Reveille plays during the week at 0700 and Retreat at 1630. Some weekends you'll hear it, but if it's a reserve weekend. Please be courteous and pay your respects to the flag and stop your car if you're driving or stand still if you are walking (hand over heart during our nation's National anthem in the afternoon). It is a sign of respect while the flag is being raised/lowered. read more

I am not privileged enough to visit a lot of Military Bases but thanks to a friend who invited us to her kid's birthday celebration, we were able to see the grounds of Travis AFB. I must say, I was really impressed. This is one very self-sufficient community. They have complete amenities here. They even have their own Inn that almost looks like a resort. Their grounds are trimmed and orderly. Admission of guests is done efficiently. Just before the main entrance to the base, there is a parking lot where visitors check in at the center, assuming, of course, they are there for an official business or invitation by military members (who have to provide guest's information like name and birth date). They ask to see your driver's license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Then they take your picture. Talk about tight security! We got to play at their Bowling Alley, which was clean and truly family-friendly. They've got the bumpers, the ball slide, bowling shoes and balls for kids as young as three! They serve delicious hot wings, too! Then, there's the Travis Air Museum which features "one of the largest collections of military aircrafts on the west coast." Strapped for time, we just walked and viewed the different planes on their outdoor exhibit: bombers, fighters, transports, rescue, trainers, helicopters and observation. I have no affinity whatsoever for these kinds of things but boy, seeing them up close made me feel so overwhelmed. read more

Okay..... So this review is as a civilian entering this compound for work AND as much as it sickens me to actually say it; Obama is my boss..... I know! Gross right?! I have to also admit that in my professional experience to date as a nurse and having worked at private hospitals, both large and small corporate health-care facilities and others in between that working for the Veterans has to date given me the most fulfillment to date as I truly feel that I am giving something back to all of the men and women who protect and defend our country... So putting my strong dislike of my boss Obama to the side I shall now commence with my review of the part of Travis AFB that I did get to experience in all of its vastness.... There is something very comforting that I feel every time I pull up or even begin to enter a military base or establishment.... And, its a completely different feeling then what I get if say I pull up to a local police department which doesn't give me a feeling of safety or protection at all which is actually quite sad when you think about it... As I began to see Travis AFB off in the distance I could see that the military police were in uniform and that a 'check in' process was in place before ANYONE gets into the actual base.. I LOVE THIS!!!! Love Love Love it!!!! And the 'boys' although they were men I have a thing for calling dudes "boys" so don't look too much into my choice of words on that one, BUT the boys were all 'packing' their firearms too which gave me such a super safe feeling and in this day and age that's saying alot..... One must be prepared to show picture ID and for me it was my federally issued picture Id badge in order to gain access to the compound... On a side note, something that brought a smile to my face and that I also appreciated was that there is a neon sign that's damn big where they list any military personnel (by count) and the date of occurrence for any DUI's that occurred and that they were busted for...... For those of you currently unaware of this phenomenon: IT's called "SHAME" AND when used in healthy doses its a DAMN healthy thing as far as I'm concerned and as I've now titled this little electric banner "The Wall of Shame"... That's another thing that military peeps have that I respect so much: Respect and when one gets out of line the rest aid to bring them back into it.... WHAT I LOVED: The SECURITY: Good luck finding much of anything that comes even remotely close to it and respectful too ;) Felt safe, safe and safe.. Just the way I like it..... CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN!!!! The entire compound is SUPER CLEAN! It is devoid of litter, trash and or trashy people... They put alot of work and daily effort into maintaining the grounds, buildings and overall area.. For me it was great to see my tax payer dollars be used efficiently.. And I can now see why so many people enjoy living life "on base"... FOOD COURT INSIDE THE EXCHANGE: A very CLEAN food court area with a decent selection of eateries such as Subway, Popeye's, Pizza, Taco Bell, Captain D's Fish and more....... AND all soda's are fill and refill yourself fountains ;) LOVED THAT :) I have to head back to Travis in about 2 months time and really look forward to the trip and might even be able to look around it more too ;) read more

I went to the Travis Air Force Base today to watch the airshow (and also because my boyfriend is an aspiring pilot and aviation fanatic). I've never been to a military base before and it was really cool to see a community inside the base. We didn't really get to see much as we were being directed to the "parking lot" (more like parking lot for planes) but we did drive by a gas station, elementary school, baseball field, and fire station. The event itself was great. There were lots to see, especially planes. Planes on the ground for you to see, touch, go inside. Planes in the air spinning and doing tricks. If you like planes, this event is definitely the one to go to. And of course there was the mighty Thunderbirds show at the end. I also want to give mad props to traffic control. It was so efficient. I know it's the air force and so I shouldn't be amazed by the discipline and ability to direct traffic so smoothly, but I still can't help being amazed! Parking was no issue because they literally guided us to our parking spot. And getting out wasn't that bad either even with just about everyone leaving at the same time. Things to remember if you plan to go to the event next time it happens: - Dress for windy weather! Because it was very windy there. But that doesn't mean come in sweats. Just bring a light jacket with you. Ladies, skirts and dresses may not be a good idea because the wind is very strong. - PUT ON SUNSCREEN! I made that silly mistake of NOT doing so and walking around, I'm sure most of the people there made that mistake too. There were also plenty of air force personnel who were literally bright red. But that could just be from being in the heat in their uniforms. read more

This might be one of my shorter reviews in the last several months but it will not be as important as all the others. We came here for an airshow on the base, which was very well organized as a military precision team would be. We were led to the parking lot areas which was on the tarmac's. The gates were plentiful and they were very strict on what you can and cannot bring in, so you didn't have to say while they brought this in but I wasn't able to bring that in. They were very consistent friendly but yet strict enough. They had plenty a static displays in the air show was top notch. The highlight of the day for me and one of my sons was climbing onto AC 17 and a C-5 Galaxy plane and actually seeing the roof laps on the top of the plane to be able to take a picture from that was very cool and thank you to the captain that let us up on that staircase to see outside. We highly recommend attending the show as the entrance from the freeway all the way to the base is very easy and very Walmart and the exit is just as easy and maintained so you can get out as quickly there is no issues in either of these points and the military did a great job thank you. read more

I often go there to visit the hubby when going to the class we have together on base. I really had no idea you could take classes from Solano Community college on base. Although there isn't much to do and sometimes you can get bored easily, at least you get discount prices on brand name items at the BX and cheaper foods at the commissary. They also have a lake there where the geese like to shase you around to try and bite you. read more

Honestly the BX had awesome sales have you buy 7 clearance items and than you get 50% off. I was able to get some Michael Kors Shoes for 18 bucks. Also I got a few other items. It's been a good minute since I've been out there I see a lot of improvements and a lot of changes I wouldn't mind living on the Base. read more

There's a lot to do here on Travis AFB, best AMC Base in the states. Let me first start off by saying that it's pristine. It's kept very clean because we're not those dirty civilians who litter without a care in the world. There's so much to do and the facilities are great. There's the gym which is amazing and is equipped with an outdoor track that's always accessible at any time of the day and it's right across from the movie theater and library. There's the commissary and the base exchanges that will have anything you'd ever need for clothing, entertainment and food. The prices can't be beat either. One of my favorite places on base is the duck pond.. I've spent so much time there enjoying the scenery and running on the path.. those you have to dodge all the duck's dropping and sometimes they'd actually chase you which is kind of scary at times. The dormitory is large and expansive and it hosts a little bar area for the servicemen that has a little diner inside as well as t.v and a little internet room and the mail room. The chow hall is pretty nice in of itself too and it serves food at all hours of the day. There's the aerial museum, a outdoor rec store and bowling alley. What else do you need? Lastly.. they have an amazing hospital here. What more can you ask for in a base? read more
