This is a good spot for special occasions, just don't order the pasta. The service is impeccable, much better than at Il Ritrovo or Field to Fork. The dining room is tastefully decorated. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny here. I didn't think my pasta was anything to write home about, I wouldn't even say it was al dente. It felt over cooked. I typically don't have high expectations with pasta, but for the price point, I would expect the pasta to be perfectly cooked at the very least. I Love this quaint, Italian restaurant with dim lighting and cozy wooden tables, nestled in downtown Sheboygan. One side of the restaurant is a more casual bar room, perfect for meet ups to enjoy a delicious bottle of wine or cocktail. Our friendly server reviewed the specials and their favorites with us, then served us a delicious house-made rustic-style bread with olive oil. Their menu has traditional and eclectic menu selections such as boar and rabbit and locally sources several of the meat items. There are unique wine selections from different regions of Italy which was a nice touch. We tried the spaghetti and sea bass special, which were both outstanding. The prices were on par with other high end restaurants of similar caliber and the freshness and quality of the sea bass was definitely worth the $50 price tag. The restaurant itself is charming and full of character, with a warm, intimate atmosphere that was buzzing with energy. Despite how busy it was, the staff made us feel genuinely welcomed and treated us as if we were the only guests in the room. Shortly after we ordered our drinks, a basket of rustic sourdough bread arrived at the table. And trust me, you cannot skip it. It was easily one of the best parts of the meal. My review of Trattoria Stefano: Often, when you return to a place cloaked in fond memories of nostalgia, it lets you down. It's like seeing an old flame thirty years later, and you question the original infatuation. Well, Stefano's stirred my passions as if 15 years meant not a thing. After strolling Sheboygan's beautiful revitalized waterfront, we drove to Stefano's, parking in their rear lot. The restaurant looked the same, and we found two empty seats at the large front room bar. Ashley, behind the bar, was gracious and helpful, and we ordered wine from Stefano's eclectic offerings. While not as groundbreaking as 20 years ago, the wine list is still interesting and has reasonable pricing. We ordered Caesar salad, two pastas, the stuffed veal chop, a sausage dish, and the Tiramisu. The Caesar was fantastic and unique, with a sublime crunchy taste. That alone was worth the price of admission, but the veal chop was a stunning crescendo, maybe the best I ever had. Pastas were as good as I remembered. The ragu was simply delicious. My spouse thought her sausage dish was okay but nothing special. Tiramisu was ordered to go back with us to Milwaukee. Later, the restaurant was so packed on a Tuesday night that Ashley left to help out in the kitchen. Greg aptly took over, and the service did not miss a beat. The one discordant note was when I asked to tip the kitchen staff. Ashley led me to the kitchen, and I passed over a $20.00 and received nary a smile or thank you. Perhaps they were too exhausted. We did have some mishaps with orders, things came out earlier than they should've and we had to wait quite some time to get orders, get dessert, get boxes, etc. Romantic environment, by no means quiet. Street parking. They prefer reservations but we sat in loft and there were about 3-4 tables empty the whole time for a Thursday evening. Food was good. Not overly salted like some places can be. Good size portions. Our son got the buttered pasta and it was very good and cooked perfectly. I got the ribeye and it was such a large portion, did take it home and enjoyed it the next day. Got the pistachio cheesecake and it was full of pistachios, like actually tasted how I wanted it to. Very enjoyable overall. We will be back, happy eating! read more

This restaurant is a hidden gem in the heart of Sheboygan. I was recently there for a private, corporate group dinner and the food, wine, service, and ambiance were all phenomenal. The Polpetta alla Bolognese meatball appetizer was amazing, as well as the Rustica salad with grapes, dried cherries, and pears. I had the fish of the day, which was a light, flaky, and perfectly prepared halibut served with lemon risotto. All the other entrees looked amazing, and the portions were plentiful. I was enjoying my dinner so much that I forgot to take any photos. I think I need to find another reason to come back to Sheboygan soon so I can visit this amazing restaurant again! read more

We came in for dinner to Trattoria Stefano on a recommendation from our hotel (The American Club in Kohler) while visiting Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I was blown away by the food and top-notch service we received. This is an upscale Italian restaurant with a small dining room, which makes for a very private and personalized experience. While waiting to be seated, their entry way is lined with their accomplishments; including that their chef was nominated for a James Beard Award. This heightened our excitement even before we began our meal. Our server was outstanding...his knowledge of the restaurant's history and menu truly made the whole experience. He really took his time explaining every part of the menu and specials. You could tell he had passion for his job. Love, love to see it!! Back again for Kohler food and wine weekend and our group dinner here. We had 6 this year and everyone cleaned their plate. The hit this year was the Halibut. Being fairly new to the area, we have been slightly disappointed in the choices for a quality dining experience. Our faith was restored when visiting Trattoria Stefano. We had the Special of the night, Sea Bass with black rice and pesto, and the ribeye with mustard greens and potato puree. Both meals cooked to perfection and absolutely delectable. We finished with a pistachio cheesecake of some kind and it may have been the best cheesecake I've ever had. A lot of love put into that cheesecake. Our entrees were around fifty dollars a piece and we paired them with a cocktail and a house branded Pilsner. Our total bill was around $130 and it was definitely worth it. No buyers remorse for once in Sheboygan County. The place is nice so be sure to dress appropriately to avoid feeling awkward if you care about that sort of thing. I felt slightly underdressed. Updates: I did end up with an extra 10 dollars on my bill... not sure what that was all about. My bill for two was around 129 and I tipped to make it 150. Ended up getting charged around 159.99 or so. Changing my rating due to having to think about this place anyway but positive. read more

My wife and I have been going to all of the Stefano restaurants the past 25 years. All are gems within Sheboygan! Recently we moved to Florida and came back to visit friends and family. There was only one place (Trattoria Stefano's) we wanted to entertain two very special friends. The staff were as good or better than ever. The bar tenders, host, the GM Martin, Michael, all the servers, and John the head executive chef all talked with us and our friends like we were truly appreciated. A return visit to Trattoria Stefano did not disappoint. Spectacular service, fantastic food, relaxing convivial cocktails and wine--what could disappoint? Allie our server was a delight and she helped us with recommendations because we wanted to try different dishes than our last visit. We started with the antipasto special Della Casa: two bruschetta slices with carpaccio, 2 with cheese and a scrummy fruit topping and a center dish of olives, peppers, tomatoes--perfectly blended in a light vinaigrette. Next came the enormous Insalata special (grapes, arugula, walnuts) and a bowl of Zuppa that was absolutely an autumnal homage (pureed and bits of squash with seasonal veggies in a light brodo). For entrees we chose the Casarecce Della Nonna and the maiale special (huge pork chop seared/cooked to die for) served with roasted kale and a creamy risotto. For contorno we shared the amazing Bietole in Agrodolce (chunks of sugar beets in a sweet sour dressing). The wine pairing suggested by Allie was spot on -- a Sangiovese red that suited our entrees to perfection. We so enjoyed every dish, and really need to compliment Allie who had just returned to work 2 days prior to our visit from her European sojourn of Tuscany, Rome, Venice, Slovenia, and England. Any other mere mortal would be jet lagged, but she was the consummate professional. She made our birthday celebration more special with her wonderful personality and with her knowledge of Stefano's. I am a long time customer of the Trattoria. I even had my wedding dinner here. I moved out of Sheboygan and I don't get a chance to get back often. I am sad to say the service has definitely gone down hill. This is as a place that was top notch. We came into the bar on a Saturday at 5/6 PM and the bar was full of...kids. The bar is not large by any means and 3 kids took up most of it. I didn't realize kids could even be at the bar? They were with their parents, but loud and obnoxious. It's normally very classy and relaxed. I had to go up to the bar to get some wine. They had 2 bartenders and not one could come to our table. It was not busy yet, I would have understood if it was. At that point, we decided to eat outside on such a lovely night. Unfortunately, the service was terrible. Our sever kept forgetting about us. They messed up my pasta and my friend got her carpaccio. I sat there for an hour with no food. She never checked in and when I finally got my pasta after I asked a different staff member(Tina) I was no longer hungry. She said sorry and took it off the bill. The point of coming to a place like the Trattoria is the "experience". I drove a distance to have it. Service C it would have been an F, but Tina was a delight. She wasn't even our server. I think she was helping inside. She really tried to help us. Ambiance D. Both sets of my great-grandparents lived in Sheboygan. Visiting over 40 years ago, the restaurant scene was quite different. Don't get me wrong, I love a good brat fry but absolutely the food scene that has developed in the last 15 years. My better half and I stopped in on Saturday night around 7:30 and stepped into a lively dining room. Service was casual yet attentive. We started off with the carpaccio. A substantial dish, I loved the richness of the beef paired with the peppery arugula. I would get it again in a heartbeat. For my entree, I opted for the ossobucco. When a long spoon is served alongside to help scoop out the bone marrow, you know its going to be rich. And it was...perfectly prepared veal shank braised in onion, leek and saffron. We went there on Saturday for the first time. The atmosphere of the restaurant was friendly and comfortable. Their service was great and our servers were nice and friendly. For the beginning, the server brought us a quarter of home baked sourdough which was so fresh. The combination of bread and olive oil was great and I couldn't stop eating it. For the appetizer, we ordered their special which was a sampler plate of seafoods, 2 oysters with spinach sauce, 2 crab cakes, and 4 cocktail shrimps. The oysters were good. The dipping sauce for the shrimp cocktail was spicy and sweet. It had interesting flavor. But the crab cakes were the star of the plate. They were so delicious. For drinks I ordered a Blood Orange Martini and my husband had a Paradise Lake. They were fun drinks and we enjoyed them. For the main course, my husband ordered the ravioli which was filled with gorgonzola, caramelized onion and walnut and sautéed in brown butter. It was delicious and had interesting mix of flavors in each bite. I ordered the sea food spaghetti which had shrimp, clams, mussels, and calamari in tomato sauce. It had lots of s of big pieces of garlic, which was good that I could separate them. The pasta was tasty but it wasn't the top notch in my opinion. For the desert my husband ordered an Irish coffee and I had a piece of tiramisu. My husband said the Irish coffee had nice flavor and taste and enjoyed the tiramisu . But for the tiramisu had lots of coco powder. Overall it is a great place if you want to a nice date night in a friendly environment with tasty food. The reason I am giving them 4 stars is I had better fine dining Italian experience. After a visit to the Kohler Art Preserve we looked forward to dinner @ Stefano's -a MUST STOP whenever we find ourselves in Sheboygan. While I could go (and on) about the menu's well edited selection of deliciously prepared Italian delights, the praises of this culinary treasure have been and will continue to be sung and are indeed well known. From the moment we called the reservation in to receiving well wishes from the host on our way out, everyone proved professional AND personable. But in particular we'd like to compliment our server, August who was in a word -superb. Not being from the area, as much as we enjoy it regrettably we don't have occasion to dine at Stefano's often. Yet when we arrived we were flattered that August immediately recognized us from a visit a few years prior. We had to eat here because the American club canceled our reservation at the restaurant at Woodlake and we did not want to eat at the Wisconsin room again. We were pleasantly surprised by the menu here. We ordered the polenta with sautéed mushrooms and the bruschetta as appetizers because we were so hungry. Probably should've only had one of the two because the bread was so good with the olive oil we ate a bunch of that before the appetizers even arrived. The bread is rustic and hearty. One of us ordered the veal chop which was a nice thick cut nicely breaded with great flavor, sautéed spinach and a creamy risotto underneath. The other order was a roasted half chicken which was to die for. The skin was brown and crispy throughout and it was perfectly seasoned, not boring at all. At a great location in downtown Sheboygan, this place is lively and fun. Excellent southern Italian food. August took exceptional care of us, knowledgable, smart, attentive and best he is a perfectionist --at one point giving me a nudge so I could peek at dish destined for another table.
