Bought a starter set for $150.. at time we bought it my wife asked man about return policy. He said 90 Days. Brought set back the following weekend to return it. Woman ahead a bad face and said they don't give refunds. Pointed to receipt saying no refunds. Ok. BUT WHEN WE BOUGHT IT, nobody said no refunds nor was it posted clearly at the register. Then the next Oman said she'd charge us 10% restocking fee. THEN she said a couple of track pins were bent she'd only refund 75% of the price. Ok. Then she said we took the train out of the box.....WHO DOESNT TAKE A TRAIN OUT OF THE BOX? Ok. If I'd seen "No refunds" posted I would not have purchased it. Good products but DECEPTIVE about sales terms. They didn't say but it's printed on receipt down at the bottom. Who looks at receipt bottom?? CHOO CHOOOO! ALLLL ABOARRDDDD!!!! This is a mighty-good train hobbyist shop, ladies and gents. And I'm not talking about Thomas the Tank Engine (although they do that too!). This is the kind of train shop which makes you feel like you shrunk in size and are living in Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood with the trolley. I LOVE trains. From photographing them to riding them. In fact, I once fell through an abandoned train bridge because I was watching a train underneath me on functioning tracks and broke my shin bone. It literally popped out of my leg and my boyfriend at the time pushed it back in. To this day, I have a dent in my leg. Anyway, I digress. I love trains and this shop has everything you need. From rolls of "grass", stone, trees, bushes, bridges, little people, buildings, paints, glues, brushes, actual trains, (a stock of vintage and new train sets), and the list goes on. If you need it, you will find it. Plus, as aforementioned; Thomas the Tank Engine toys for the little ones. If you love trains or even crafts, you will love Train Shack. Not to mention, the staff is lovely. They obviously know their product and are passionate about it. I am 57 and a lifetime train guy. I have lived in southern California my entire life other than a few years when I was away for work. When I was young you could go 15-20 miles in any direction from your home and visit several train stores. Sadly, those days are long gone except for a few remaining stores like the Train Shack. I have never had a bad experience here. I have talked to Tod and Mindy with frequency over the years, as well as the newer staff members. I have always felt welcomed and always been treated with respect as a customer and as a person. All of these people understand the train industry and the hobbyists that they serve and that in turn support them by buying products. I have always felt appreciated for my purchases, even though I am certainly not a "big" customer. I don't care if you are new and really have no idea what you want or if you are experienced and have a very tricky technical question, just walk in the door and you will be taken care of. HUGE VERITY OF TRAINS! Fantastic shop for train lovers! All sizes of trains for the collectors and or non collectors... With the amazing service, plus huge verity of model trains and accessories that you can imagine. Your sure to take something home. Last year, during December (before Christmas), we went in... to check out what they had (since a lot of people were telling us to come here in the first place). Walking in, we saw a huge display of model trains (fully equipped and running) on a customized train set. Browsing around, we were looking for a Santa train... (something cheap). Coming out, we purchased more of the expensive electric trains...(go figure). With the customer service and help we got... we were very excited and pleased with the instructions they provided. Purchasing additional accessories, such as: train tracks, liquid scented oil for the steam engine, human like figures and some landscape, we were very excited. Costing us an arm and a leg of around $700+... well still come back and have recommended this place to everyone! By the way, we received so many compliments on our train set. I recently decided to build an HO scale little Tabletop train layout after finding an old train set I used to own online for my son. I came in to check out the store, and the train displays in store. I totally forgot how expensive this hobby can be but cool at the same time, so I'll be buying a box car or two per month for the next couple of years before I get to a point where my layout would even be remotely near decent. Parking lot in the back is big enough, considering there are spots for the near by businesses as well, the young man who helped me was quite helpful (don't remember his name but appeared to be in his early 20s). I wanted to like this place but I had 2 experiences there that made me decide never to go back. The first time I visited my toddler and I were the only customers in the store and were not greeted with a hello or anything. Just uncomfortable stares from two older men the entire time we were there. I wanted to support local business so I bought a train and the guy at the register didn't even say thank you. Then I decided to give this place a second chance and the same experience happened, but this time I asked if my toddler could go to the restroom and the clerk just sternly said "no" and to go across the street to target. Not sure why a place that sells toys for children does not have a restroom. He was really rude so we left and I am going to tell all my friends not to support this business. The prices are not competitive and you can easily find cheaper trains anywhere else. I want to support local business but I also believe in supporting kind people. The Train Schack is an uncomfortable place to visit and the customer service is awful. read more

My son has loved trains since birth it seems. Starting with the wooden Thomas Type, then moving to battery-operated ones that crawl along plastic track. Now at age 4 we've moved up to something more substantial. Diecast metal O gauge trains, riding on metal, electric track. Super detailed and remote control driven, with smoke and sounds that add to the fun. Each step of our journey Train Shack has been there to help. A family owned business that really seems to care for their customers. I see people that come in and just talk. This is never a problem for them, that's REALLY nice to see! Simple things make such a big difference. I bought a $5 used train car, one of the owners noticed the coupler was about to break so he repaired it and still only charged me the $5. The store had a lot of inventory and the employees were extremely friendly and helpful. Our 4 year old son enjoyed the two train tables and large selection of wooden tracks and trains. The best thing about this store is that everyone that worked there was so friendly and helpful! They interacted with my son and showed true, genuine interest in his love of trains. We LOVE this place! My son had so much fun playing with the kids train tables they have set up. Everyone here was very helpful and friendly. We got there just after they opened and when we came in with my son they turned on all their trains they have set up in the store for him to watch. We definitely splurged a bit, but we believe in supporting small business - especially when the folks there are so knowledgeable and want you to have a great experience there. No one ever pushed us to buy anything, but they were ready to offer help and answer questions if needed. This happened one year ago. I had just moved onto the local area with my family. My 10 year old son and I enjoy model trains. We were having trouble with one of our MTH locomotives. I was excited to find this model train store near our home. My son and I walked into the store with our model train and were asked if we needed help. I explained the issue. The owner/salesperson took a look at our train and explained that these trains had an internal rechargeable battery that needed replacement. I didn't know that. He told me the battery cost $16. I said "okay, I'll take it." He proceeded to remove the shell with a screwdriver and installed the new $16 battery. It literally took him less than 4 minutes. He rang up the charge and told the total was $41. I explained that I only wanted the battery. He responded "Yes, the labor charge for the battery replacement was $25. I responded "Huh?!...you never told me anything about a $25 charge for labor". He stayed quiet and proceeded to point to a small sign taped on the side of the register. It listed labor costs. I tried to argue with him that I never asked him to install the battery and that I could have easily installed it myself. He explained that most of his costumers didn't know how to work on these trains. He started to get upset. I just wanted to leave so I paid the $41. It's upsetting that these salespeople carefully follow you around the store thinking you are a shoplifter and turn around and steal from you. I am a successful business man and have no urges to shoplift. We never returned to the store....It's too bad. We now purchase our expanding model trains and accessories online. read more

Model trains shops are hard to find in California. This is a good one. Everyone at the Train Shack are terrific. Very helpful and good prices. I have many pre-war pieces and they have been able to repair everything that I have had issues with. I cannot express how awesome the staff at Train Shack are. I recently introduced this hobby shop to my brother, Brian, who absolutely loves model trains. After one visit, he was hooked not just because of their selection, the staff is just so kind and patient with him; my brother has a disability and some people just don't know how to handle others with disabilities so it was so neat to hear that everyone knows my entire family. Another plus about this shop is their ordering because most places only order once a year and they are able to get my brother what he wants in a month or so. This place is easy to miss if you haven't been there before, but be sure to look for the big parking sign since they have a private lot. Customers cannot enter through the back door, but they do have an an entrance on the main drag. Great place to shop and I am happy to support them! read more

We have made it a yearly ritual to visit the Train Shack as soon as we set up our holiday tree. We have videos taken every year that show how we've morphed from our original Lionel O set of track and train to several trains, more track, buildings (burning house complete with smoke and firefighters being a favorite), people, trees. It's such a pleasure to visit the store and see the trains they have set up, smell the latest scents (frying bacon!) for the steam engines, the figurines (bought the damsel in distress tied up and the villain today), and wish we could buy everything. The staff is always readily available to help us find exactly what we need; and never overly solicitous. The location is convenient, hours are perfect, it's clean and store always smells like a real train station - except better. I've ordered Lionel parts online - doesn't compare with the service/support/care we have gotten for nearly a decade from the Train Shack. Ladies: I've been married a couple of decades, and getting my husband started with this has been the best. It is easily his favorite present, and a favorite family ritual for us every year. As I write this now...he is wearing his conductor's hat, sipping a martini, running his trains and planning which will crash next. My toddler LOVES trains. As soon as you walk in there are two sets of Thomas Train tables with ALOT of trains. Unlike Barnes & Nobles or other areas where you see train sets there were not alot of kids fighting for trains. We walked around the store a bit and he got to see larger trains. This place is like a kid in candy store but with model trains. They carry a wide range of model size scales and have awesome displays. The staff was very helpful in guiding me the right way to emptying my wallet in the good way. I wanted to build a custom layout track for my O gauge Lionel train set and they were able to build a layout on the computer then gathered all the correct track sizes I needed. They were also able to provide me parts to light up my caboose since the one on my set did not come illuminated. $5.00 part vs. $95.00 for a new illuminate caboose. If you're local and in the LA county this is the one and only stop you need to visit for your model train goods. read more

A shame but the staff was by far some of the rudest people I have met. I am a beginner and started by purchasing some stuff on ebay and some stuff there. I have spent over $1k in the past month with gifts etc and no matter how polite and careful I am asking questions. I just left their store yesterday 12/21/22 after spending another $100 and when I asked some guy for advice, he couldn't be ruder. Overall, I love the store and I love supporting the small family business but with the poor treatment I have received when I walk in there to buy merchandise, ai am currently looking for a better place where people are kinder and more patient. It is a shame because they are very close to my house and the shop is wonderful but the staff, atrocious. They do treat some people with kindness as I observed but somehow, they simply don't like me when I go there. Oh well.... There are some other shops I can go to to get my train supplies and of course, there is always online. read more

My buddy and I started our train addiction here and they really hooked it up. You'll find almost everything here but the cost might be a few bucks more than online or another shop. However, you'll have everything in one stop and with the expertise to follow. I found a hobby shop in Santa Clarita that had a limited inventory and absolutely no knowledge about trains.
