We weren't in there long, but for the short time that we were there, the owners made a big positive impression on us. They spoke directly to my children. They talked to my son about his purchase. They also gave the kids these vintage electric trains that they were so excited about. Prices were fair too. They were about the same or a little less than ordering online. There is no age limit here...like severance, walking through that door makes you a little kid again. Our octogenarian uncle recently unlocked a life long dream of his...to own a Lionel train set. When we realized that he wanted one, we took him here and like one of Peter Pan's lost boys, he realized he had the ability to fly. If there's one thing that will have you come crashing back to reality though is the prices. Train sets, no matter the size, can be expensive, but I don't fault the store for that...just know coming in that these trains aren't cheap. With that said, buying something here versus an online retailer does come with some perks: community. The owners and people who work here are so nice. The store could be full of people and I've always been asked if I needed help. If you have any questions about the products, they will answer them...show you how to do things, and more often than not, you will nerd out together. The store also has a vast collection of things from common to rare. Any supplies you might need are stocked (or I assume, can be ordered?). This is also a great place if you're a miniature maker, tabletop war gamer, or any of those kinds of hobbies. They might not have as much variety as a standalone hobby store, but again, you get the added value of community with your purchase. Obviously you should financially support this store any way you can, but just coming in and looking at all the trains they have set up is a great reason to visit. We get out to the Train Shack a couple of times per year to pick up a thing or two for our layout. We've been coming out from Orange County since my son was in his Thomas the Train era. They've got everything, especially if you're into HO or O gauge, but they've got it all. The staff and fellow hobbyists and always helpful. Stuff can be a little pricey but the selection they have adds value. My son is into On30 trains and the stuff is often hard to find but this time out we saw that the shack carries some so that was fun. My espresso machine broke. I took it apart and in the process stripped a tiny Phillips head screw that holds the chassis together. I couldn't put it back together until I found a replacement. I paused my project and went to run some errands with a plan to hit a hardware store to grab the part I needed. I happened to drive by the Train Shack so instead of going to Home Depot I figured I would see if I could just buy a few screws from them. When I walked in, I showed the screw to one of the owners and she asked for me to hold on for a minute while she went in the back. A few moments later she returned with a couple of drawers full of random parts. We all have a drawer like this. It's the kind that you throw everything into that you think might be useful later but don't have a specific space for. In fact, I had just finished going through mine at home in hopes of finding a screw to replace the one I had brought in. I hate this process. It is always tedious and often disappointing. This saint of a woman proceeded to stand there for the next 5-10 minutes sorting through these trays full of hundreds of tiny ass screws with me to find one that was the right fit for my espresso machine. We found one. I asked how much it cost and she just waived her hand at me and said don't worry about it. I tried to insist but she pushed back, "It's not a big deal. If you ever need something for a model train come back." I LOVE places like this. I don't build model trains and pretty much have no reason to be in their shop. I was just randomly nearby and went in. They have zero reason to help a person like me. However, when I showed up they operated with a kindness that made me feel like I was worth their time even though unbeknownst to me they were not going to make any money off of me. Just about every other interaction I have as a consumer is transactional. I can guarantee that the exchange at Home Depot would not have gone the same way. It's super rare to find a place where they eschew a money grab in favor of building community. When I find a place like that I go out of my way to support them and you should too. Lots of cool trains set up and running that you can watch, a great selection of Brio trains for kids (including tables they can play with them on), and a trove of stuff for more sophisticated hobbyists. My husband and daughter were just in here getting things for our O scale Polar Express train that we are going to set up for Christmas. Everyone was super helpful and a good amount of time was spent on making sure the right amount of track was bought. They used their computer to help with that and my husband came back with a print out. They also found some Polar Express figures to add. I remember from the last time I was in there how incredibly nice everyone was and nothing has changed. They literally have everything that you need and have different scale sizes. Train Shack helped to create an amazing moment. I had an idea to surprise my 85 year-old father with his childhood Lionel trains, which he had given to me long ago, for Christmas. Problem was I had the idea with only a handful of days before I had to be driving and as I pulled the set from the garage, I discovered all of the power cables had long rotted away. A bit heartbroken, I took the transformer to Train Shack and explained my dilemma. Although only days before Christmas and already booked with existing repairs, Train Shack truly understood what this would mean to my father and managed to get the repair done ASAP. Incredible expertise, knowledge and service. I took my late grandfather's 1946 American Flyer set that hadn't run in 30 years here. From the second I put the box on the counter the woman helping me knew exactly what I had brought in. She was honest about how long the repair would take (about 6 weeks) but was confident that they could repair it. The model was finished ahead of schedule, though a wheel broke after running it a bit. I brought it back in and they replaced the wheel (which was not part of the original servicing) free of charge. Today this nearly 80 year old model train, a priceless memory of my grandfather, runs perfectly whereas it barely moved before. Since then I have made many purchases of equipment in HO, O and S. The knowledge base here is second to none, and they have always been upfront and honest. One time I came in and the man helping me realized before I did that he accidentally overcharged me a little bit last time and volunteered to credit it back to me. Mistakes are human, but I love that kind of integrity. You can find model trains cheaper online, but the level of expertise and customer service at Train Shack means that I can rely on them to help me solve problems and not just add to my collection but make my existing collection even better. What an incredible oasis for little ones, and adults! My husband and I came in with our toddler when they opened on a Sunday morning and were blown away by this place's selection and uniqueness. This store is one of a kind and the employees are very knowledgeable about everything related to trains of all types! They have impressive displays above head and all around the store, which really showcase the detail and design of the railroad trains. They also have a wide selection of the BRIO train sets for younger ones who want more of a hands on experience. Todd was very helpful and patient with us and all of our questions as first timers. The store got very busy an hour into opening too, so it was nice to see that this small business gets so much support and has so many return customers year after year. Our son absolutely loves trains. We used to visit Travel Town in Griffith Park so much, that now we often drive our son by just to see the trains from the car since they've been closed due to COVID. He loves trains THAT much. We've been frequenting Train Shack for a quite some time now, pre and post covid, to the point that it's a family ritual of ours. They have a massive variety of model trains in giant display cases for viewing as well as entire towns and mountains set up with trains running around them. Whenever we're there they turn on the trains so our son can see them going around the towns, over the mountains and through tunnels. I'm not even a fan of trains and I think it's really cool, so you can imagine how excited our son is! They have a whole kids section with everything imaginable, and even after coming here as often as we have, it seems there's always something new. With so few things available for us to do with our son due to COVID, we're ecstatic that Train Shack is still in business and is able to let us come into the store. If you're hesitant about shopping in person due to covid don't be: all the employees wear masks and they do not let the store get crowded so it's quite easy to keep your distance. They only allow certain numbers of customers in at a time, even if it means there's a line at the door of other families waiting to get in (which is often the case) which shows they care more about the safety of their customers more than anything. Even if you do have to wait, they're still very good about making sure people don't have to wait too long which is great, especially with a very eager child in tow! The staff has always been warm and helpful but never "salesy". Being able to just have a normal conversation without trying to be sold on more stuff is part of the experience we really enjoy. Like with most things these days we realize that yes, if you shop around online you could probably find their kids products for a little cheaper, but in these trying times we don't mind spending a little bit extra to support local businesses rather than Amazon. Sure our son loves the new trains he gets to take home, but it's the experience of being in the store and seeing everything that he loves. There's just something so satisfying about the car ride home with a shiny new train, pouring over every detail of the package. You just don't get that when you're opening up a cardboard box someone shipped to your house. To us, fond memories of experiences for him and for us are invaluable. My parents brought my son in to pick out his 7th birthday present on Sunday, which ended up being the NASA train set. The way that anyone from our family is treated each time we go there is with such patience, understanding and knowledge. Each time we get in the car to leave we have the same conversation. "Can you believe how great they are", "They are amazing", etc... As you well know, this is not a cheap hobby, but it is one that has brought us closer together as a family. Having a location where he can go and be encouraged to be a kid by looking, touching and have some assisted play to learn more about the trains has only heightened his passion for it. We drive there from Hawthorne, which might not seem like it means anything, but in a world where you can stay home, buy anything online and receive it two days later, we would much rather take the time and spend the gas money to support a business like this. My son is proud to wear his Train Shack shirt and, to be honest, we smile each time he does and we know the feeling of being in the store and the real sense of community it brings. Cool that I was able to find trains for a project i was doing. We sent someone to get the train as it was a pretty far distance from us but we needed a train asap for photos. Spent a pretty penny and when I got the train it was in a box, appeared to be new or like new. Opened the box to inspect the train set and it was broken. Too far for us to justify taking it back. Made the drive up to Burbank from down in Orange County. It was really refreshing to go to an actual brick and mortar model train shop with employees who are actually knowledgeable. They were the only shop that had a replacement part for my LGB G gauge engine. Service was quick and things are fairly priced for the hobby. The selection they have of different gauges is awesome. This is a store with lots of great stuff to look at. Their layouts on display are really nice. One could spend all day in there just enjoying the store. The prices are a little high but if you want something now, it can be worth it. The staff are good. They don't go out of their way to help you but they also don't try and run you out and are straight forward with answering questions. This can be seen as rude by some people but oh well. You can't please everyone. Personally, I would enjoy an enthusiastic conversation with their employees every now and then. They seem like good people if you get to know them. I just think that since they work at a train shop, they've seen and heard everything over the years. When your hobby becomes work, I guess your outlook on it changes.
