Do not buy the chicken…read more I've been shopping here for about 2 years and for the first year it was fine, but over the last year I've had to bring chicken back about 10 times. And it's not like it's borderline or about to spoil. I open it up when I get home and it is completely open a window or you'll throw up rancid. I can tell the butchers know about it too because when I tell them they give me the worst attitude. I told them they keep selling me rancid meat and they should check it. They said "dont tell me how to do my job". I bought some spoiled lamb and the butcher told me that lamb always smells bad and I should to rinse it off. What?!? I know what lamb smells like. I know what rotten meat smells like. Rinsing it does not make it safe. I've given them too many chances and I'm done. I talked to the managers. I talked to the butchers. I even filed a report with the USDA. Nothing has changed. I'm surprised they don't have health code violations.

I'm not exactly sure why it feels like such a stark contrast, but it feels like the quality of some items diminishes by Saturday/Sunday. I'm very cautious when it comes to purchasing meat packaged by their butchery. Some of the beef appears brown in the store and if they weren't, they would turn brown within a day. I don't know if it's the way the meat is stored or processed, but it doesn't appear fresh or appetizing. However, if I purchase brands that are packaged by brand names, it's usually fine. The produce selection here is decent, but I feel it's not super diverse or abundant, even in peak seasons. For example, some of my favorite fruits are pretty limited in availability such as watermelon, white nectarines, or pears. It's possible they aren't prominently featured at the storefront or the entrances due to limited spacing, or maybe limited shipments. It's just disappointing to see such a small inventory. I think for me, it was a big shift in my shopping routine. I used to be able to find everything I needed as a one stop shop, but these days, I feel my basket is lighter. I come through out of convenience and have prioritized different grocers.

When I got home I realized the date on the package expired (shocker). I took them back with my receipt and the new manager almost started to accuse me of bringing back meat purchased different day. He said "oh no well those would've been removed this morning" because there was some sort of fire in the meat department and the butcher area was all shut down. I asked if I could just go back and swap them for non expired meat. Lo and behold, ALL the meat on the shelf was expired! So I asked if he could check if there was any non expired grass-fed ground beef in the back. He said all the workers are gone for the day because of the fire. I mentioned that hes the manager and could probably check himself. He went in the back, came out, and said theres no non expired ground beef in the back and gave me a refund slip plus a $10 off coupon. Seriously, for the general markup Gelsons has for being a higher end store, you'd really think they'd try harder.

But this review is for the Supervisor at the self-checkout. He is always so nice and helps us out when there are issues with our purchases. I forget to look at his name tag earlier but it's the gentleman with dark (almost black) and curly hair. Always has a smile when dealing with customers.
