I turned 21 a little over a week ago. On the day of my birthday I went to the DMV and waited for three hours to renew my driver's license. They informed me that I would receive my new license in the mail and gave me a temporary license that lasts the interim period. In the state of North Carolina, you need both your expired license for picture ID and the piece of paper as a valid current driver's license in order to purchase alcohol.
I went to Trader Joe's to buy some wine and begin developing my tastes. I picked out a nice Chateau Ste Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon and some bottles of Three Buck Chuck. At the register, I presented my ID, both the expired license and the current paper license. I knew this was the required legal identification because it had been accepted at the ABC store the day before. The cashier discounted my claim that I had been to the ABC store the day before, said that she didn't think she could accept my ID, and then rang a loud bell to call over a manager. The manager informed me that they could not accept my identification because doing so would be unlawful. They unapologetically informed me that because my license is expired, it is invalid, and that the paper license "means nothing".
This is false. The ABC quick guide to NC alcohol laws indicates on page 17 that the combination of paper interim license and expired license is a legal ID for the purchase of an alcoholic beverage. See: http://reports.abc.nc.gov/uploads/resources/43e805f02a254abd85cbc23135b17e97.pdf
I was denied service based on their unapologetically faulty understanding of the law. I was embarrassed by their bell ringing, infuriated by their adamant refusal to listen to me, and outraged by the way they treated me like an unscrupulous miscreant. I'm a law abiding citizen. I vote, pay taxes, and don't even speed. I was abiding the law and I was needlessly and unapologetically denied service in an infuriating manner. I will not be shopping at this location again. I did nothing to deserve that kind of disrespect.
Additionally, this Trader Joe's location is always very crowded, and the aisles are quite small. The crowd and small aisles make shopping there feel like a traffic jam, as even a single cart is enough to entirely block an aisle.
Before this incident I appreciated the food enough to brave the stressful crowds and traffic jams, but even then the shopping atmosphere was something I had to suffer through for the food. At this point in time, I frankly don't think it's worth it. If I need to do any Trader Joe's shopping from here on out, I'll be trying the location north of Raleigh, near Costco. read more
