I visited Trade Roots' cafe with a friend specifically to try out their October special, "Monster Iced Mocha." We visited around the same time as the Westover Farmers Market, so the inside was a bit packed. At one point, we noticed the line going nearly outside the door--although it is a small location, so at least it moved relatively quickly. My order came fairly quick for the amount of people. However, my friend's order had a longer wait time despite being the same drink with only the milk substituted. We eventually asked the staff if the order was still coming through--they were very sweet, apologized for the wait, and quickly prepared the order. Unsure if maybe the order got lost in the shuffle, or perhaps someone else accidentally grabbed it, but it was nice that they quickly resolved the issue once it became known to them. The drink was okay, which I was fine with because the main appeal was supposed to be the Halloween-themed design. I realized too late that my drink didn't come with the chocolate syrup drizzled on top that others' did, which was unfortunate. The cafe was beautifully decorated, and it's clear that there was a lot of thought and heart put into the design. The shop was also nice to check out, with a great collection of items with a nice mission and message behind each product. However, it is a bit tight to go through the aisles when it is busy. I hope to visit again during a less crowded time to check out other seasonal treats they may have in the future! read more

This store is a breath of fresh air, a lovely respite from a world flooded with cheap, artificial, one-time-use products. Trade Roots is curated with thoughtful gifts, clothes, home decor, jewelry, and knick knacks. I walked in recently and immediately saw the perfect gifts for some friends. Everything here is so beautiful and unique. It's not one of those boutiques where everything is just resold from Amazon with a green washed label. Solid choice for a local coffee shop. It has a comfortable seating area if you're into that, and lots of street parking that is open most times of day if you just want to run in and out. Oh, and the coffee? Best latte in town. Lots of baked goods some of which are even gluten free. I randomly found this place after visiting a fair trade store in my hometown in Tennessee. They had brochures of all fair trade stores in the US- unbeknownst to me, there was one in Arlington. It's a great store, with a lot to choose from. I definitely prefer it to ten thousand villages due to more variety (plus a small, locally-owned business). The coffee shop is great. It's very reasonably priced, eco-conscious in their supplies, and great lattes and iced coffee! The staff is friendly. The pop-up they just did with pie life was great, and I wish it was a permanent fixture. I love how cozy the coffee shop is too. My only complaint is the limited seating and outlets. I'd love to work here regularly, but I feel guilty to take a spot for too long since there are only a couple of tables. read more

I love this store. I can always find unique items that are not found in department stores. My daughter-in-law doesn't wear leather, and Trade Roots has beautiful purses without a piece of leather to be found. I've also purchased gorgeous scarves, trivets and interesting bowls. Came in and felt that the owner was unfriendly... she was talking rudely to who I assume was a worker (a very nice hispanic lady who made me a very good latte and had a very nice attitude) and the owner made me uncomfortable, made a uncomfortable atmosphere... Very pricey things... could find for better at 10,000 Villages where most of the things in the store seem to come from... Owner checked me out.. got really pretty earrings for a co worker but felt that owner was being rude and wanted to be done with me... would only recommend for coffee... better to buy fair trade from the companies that sell the products than to buy from this store which feels like a resale place... read more

While ordering, the owner was training another employee, and I was a bit uncomfortable watching their interaction because it wasn't the most friendly. When she switched gears to attend to me, I don't feel like I was treated with the most hospitable of service. It was more like, "So what cold drink do you want? We have this, this, and this." I ordered a quiche, and I believe they should've indicated on the menu that this consists of a small slice 1/8 of the size of the full quiche on a plate next to some salad leaves. This store is packed with tons of beautiful, unique, handmade, fair trade items. It's an especially wonderful place to buy gifts! They have a little bit of everything here, from jewelry, scarves, handbags, and other wearable accessories, to home decor and kitchen items, to children's toys, and lots of things in between. My boyfriend usually has to drag me out of the place (but he also loves shopping for his mom and sisters here). I live in the neighborhood and was excited by the recent(ish) addition of the little cafe portion of the store -- they serve fair trade coffee, tea, and other drinks like specialty lattes, as well as some treats like scones, muffins, and cookies. All of the edible items I've tried here were locally made (not sure if all of them are, but I love that they support local businesses AND fair trade!). There is a quaint and cozy area to sit and relax, the atmosphere is comfortable and inviting. They did a great job combining this cafe area with the rest of the store; it kind of feels like you're in someone's well-decorated home. Having driven by a couple times, I thought it was a run of the mill local coffee place where I could get some work done. Trade Roots has all kinds of cool housewares accessories and global products from around the world. I'm not personally someone who seeks out ethical cause goods or looks for shops that sell them, however for anyone who does this store will likely really impress you. It's basically a small locally owned gift shop that only sells fair trade goods. The things they have seem really unique, and almost everything looks handmade. As a coffee/workplace sort of venue the setting is very quaint, cozy, and personal. It has a very personal, global vibe to it, as opposed to the mass-marketed, quasi-hipster vibe you'd get at a coffee-only place or Starbucks. I agree with another review on here that it feels like being at someone's very tasteful home as opposed to a chain joint. Because I tend to like bigger, more open spaces to do work with more people around I'd probably only come back here as a change of pace, but if you're looking to support local or hardworking craftspeople all over the world by purchasing their goods you'll really like Trade Roots.They have a great cause behind them. read more
