What a community-focused spot! Walk inside and you'll see two rooms filled with fair-trade goods from jewelry to clothes to cards. In one room is a small cafe that sells coffee and other drinks with a few tables. The chai latte I ordered was delicious! After I ordered, I browsed the store as I waited for my latte. read more

For the most part, this is a charming little coffee and gift shop, and I really wanted to enjoy the experience. Unfortunately, the way our group was treated over seating left a very bad impression. We arrived as paying customers and simply wanted to sit together. Instead, the barista repeatedly told us where we could and couldn't sit. First we were directed to one side, then the other. We were told we shouldn't use the large table because "maybe someone with a computer MIGHT show up." Then another area was suddenly off-limits because "something might happen." Ultimately, it felt like the only acceptable option was squeezing our group into a corner near the trash cans. I understand that the shop has a philosophy behind designated laptop/no-laptop areas, and that's perfectly reasonable. What wasn't reasonable was making a group of paying customers feel as though there was literally nowhere they were welcome to sit because our presence might somehow disrupt the intended seating arrangement. It was 90 degrees outside, or we would have sat there. Policies are one thing; hospitality is another. A coffee shop should be able to maintain its atmosphere and guidelines without making customers feel like an inconvenience simply for showing up as a group. Cute shop, but the seating experience and attitude toward our group were unnecessarily frustrating and unwelcoming. read more

I visited Trade Roots' cafe with a friend specifically to try out their October special, "Monster Iced Mocha." We visited around the same time as the Westover Farmers Market, so the inside was a bit packed. At one point, we noticed the line going nearly outside the door--although it is a small location, so at least it moved relatively quickly. My order came fairly quick for the amount of people. However, my friend's order had a longer wait time despite being the same drink with only the milk substituted. We eventually asked the staff if the order was still coming through--they were very sweet, apologized for the wait, and quickly prepared the order. Unsure if maybe the order got lost in the shuffle, or perhaps someone else accidentally grabbed it, but it was nice that they quickly resolved the issue once it became known to them. The drink was okay, which I was fine with because the main appeal was supposed to be the Halloween-themed design. I realized too late that my drink didn't come with the chocolate syrup drizzled on top that others' did, which was unfortunate. The cafe was beautifully decorated, and it's clear that there was a lot of thought and heart put into the design. The shop was also nice to check out, with a great collection of items with a nice mission and message behind each product. However, it is a bit tight to go through the aisles when it is busy. I hope to visit again during a less crowded time to check out other seasonal treats they may have in the future! read more

This store is a breath of fresh air, a lovely respite from a world flooded with cheap, artificial, one-time-use products. Trade Roots is curated with thoughtful gifts, clothes, home decor, jewelry, and knick knacks. I walked in recently and immediately saw the perfect gifts for some friends. Everything here is so beautiful and unique. It's not one of those boutiques where everything is just resold from Amazon with a green washed label. The Trade Roots website explains why the fair trade, sustainable mission is important to the store. The food and drinks are delicious here, too! There is some seating inside, as well as tables outside that face the main drag in Westover. Come for a chai and some housewares, leave feeling happy. read more

Trade Roots - Felted items - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Arlington, Virginia

Local shop selling artisan craft and home goods with a delightful cafe attached. Trade Roots has been a staple of Westover for as long as I can remember, but in recent years the cafe has really been amped up. On weekends, you can find people sitting outside at the tables with their families and a line out the door. The coffee is delicious, and they have lots of vegan options for pastries and food. Such a great communal spot! read more

Fair trade shop and caffe. Had a lovely chai latte on a cozy bench listening to Bob Marley and the sound of wind chimes. Yummy for the tummy and the feast for the eyes. Friendly staff and chill vibes. Outdoor seating is very popular and located near the Westover Farmers market and library. Will come again! read more

Very nice neighborhood gem. A little coffee shop, bar, tea house, eatery, and craft shop all in one nice little old building. Nice staff too. Also a nice place to just sit outside and watch traffic and people go by. I will be coming back again... and I almost forgot to mention that they have an okay craft beer selection, including a few difficult-to-find imported beers (hope to see some South African beers in the future, too, which I know where to find) read more

This is such a cute hole-in-the-wall coffee shop/boutique!!! Everyone was super friendly & we left with a beautiful home decor purchase along with our coffee :-) will certainly be back....many more times, I can imagine!! read more

Solid choice for a local coffee shop. It has a comfortable seating area if you're into that, and lots of street parking that is open most times of day if you just want to run in and out. Oh, and the coffee? Best latte in town. Lots of baked goods some of which are even gluten free. I'm leaving out the whole shop area which seems really nice but I'm just there for the coffee and will continue to go back. read more

What an uplifting and fun experience shopping for some little stocking stuffers for friends we had today. The shop just energizes goodwill and friendliness and you can't leave there in a bad mood. Super customer service from the young ladies there and a delicious empanada from the cafe. Prices are so reasonable, you are contributing to a local shop serving good causes and the variety of things to be found covers a wide spectrum. Go, get and be happy!! read more

My first stop when I need to buy a gift for someone! Beautiful jewelry, mugs, kitchen and home supplies/decor, candles, clothes, etc!! I randomly found this place after visiting a fair trade store in my hometown in Tennessee. They had brochures of all fair trade stores in the US- unbeknownst to me, there was one in Arlington. It's a great store, with a lot to choose from. I definitely prefer it to ten thousand villages due to more variety (plus a small, locally-owned business). The coffee shop is great. It's very reasonably priced, eco-conscious in their supplies, and great lattes and iced coffee! The staff is friendly. The pop-up they just did with pie life was great, and I wish it was a permanent fixture. I love how cozy the coffee shop is too. My only complaint is the limited seating and outlets. I'd love to work here regularly, but I feel guilty to take a spot for too long since there are only a couple of tables. read more

I went to check this place out and was completely ignored no one said hello may I help you nothing customer service is horrible to people of color, A Caucasian person walked in they were greeted and asked if they needed anything definitely racist would never go back there again! Perfect stop before we get on the road. The staff is great, the interior is gorgeous and the gift shop has all kinds of original fun things- I bought the best smelling candle for my pal. Everything is eco-friendly and fair trade. Enjoyed my iced Thai tea and my parents really like the coffee. Very charming and I regret not being able to stay longer! read more

I love the additional seating inside. A great place to grab a coffee and catch up with a friend on a rainy day.

Went here the first time today - loved it. We used to go to Fair Trade Winds at Mosaic in Merrifield but they have closed. This place is as good or better than FTW. Great selection of non-slave manufactured goods. Super friendly staff and cool vibe. The coffee and baked goods were a shopping bonus! Parking is easy and there is outdoor seating. read more

I love this store. I can always find unique items that are not found in department stores. My daughter-in-law doesn't wear leather, and Trade Roots has beautiful purses without a piece of leather to be found. I've also purchased gorgeous scarves, trivets and interesting bowls. Lots of problems with this place... where to start... Came in and felt that the owner was unfriendly... she was talking rudely to who I assume was a worker (a very nice hispanic lady who made me a very good latte and had a very nice attitude) and the owner made me uncomfortable, made a uncomfortable atmosphere... Very pricey things... could find for better at 10,000 Villages where most of the things in the store seem to come from... Owner checked me out.. got really pretty earrings for a co worker but felt that owner was being rude and wanted to be done with me... would only recommend for coffee... better to buy fair trade from the companies that sell the products than to buy from this store which feels like a resale place... read more

LOVE this store in the very charming Westover neighborhood. Lots of beautiful gifts and things you absolutely must have -- plus an adorable coffee shop and great staff. Can always find a unique gift for anyone on my list. So glad to have the store around the corner! read more

Mission: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Service: The store is undeniably cute, interesting, and has strong values. The 3/5 stars come from my impression at the coffee shop, just on the right of the store. While ordering, the owner was training another employee, and I was a bit uncomfortable watching their interaction because it wasn't the most friendly. When she switched gears to attend to me, I don't feel like I was treated with the most hospitable of service. It was more like, "So what cold drink do you want? We have this, this, and this." I ordered a quiche, and I believe they should've indicated on the menu that this consists of a small slice 1/8 of the size of the full quiche on a plate next to some salad leaves. Interesting...I wanted to love the store, as it aligns with my values, but the service was just not attractive. read more

This store is packed with tons of beautiful, unique, handmade, fair trade items. It's an especially wonderful place to buy gifts! They have a little bit of everything here, from jewelry, scarves, handbags, and other wearable accessories, to home decor and kitchen items, to children's toys, and lots of things in between. My boyfriend usually has to drag me out of the place (but he also loves shopping for his mom and sisters here). I live in the neighborhood and was excited by the recent(ish) addition of the little cafe portion of the store -- they serve fair trade coffee, tea, and other drinks like specialty lattes, as well as some treats like scones, muffins, and cookies. All of the edible items I've tried here were locally made (not sure if all of them are, but I love that they support local businesses AND fair trade!). There is a quaint and cozy area to sit and relax, the atmosphere is comfortable and inviting. They did a great job combining this cafe area with the rest of the store; it kind of feels like you're in someone's well-decorated home. I'm glad that this store is part of our Westover neighborhood! :) read more

If you stop here after reading this comment the comment will seem kind of absurd, but I actually wasn't aware that this was a gift store before stopping by. Having driven by a couple times, I thought it was a run of the mill local coffee place where I could get some work done. Trade Roots has all kinds of cool housewares accessories and global products from around the world. I'm not personally someone who seeks out ethical cause goods or looks for shops that sell them, however for anyone who does this store will likely really impress you. It's basically a small locally owned gift shop that only sells fair trade goods. The things they have seem really unique, and almost everything looks handmade. As a coffee/workplace sort of venue the setting is very quaint, cozy, and personal. It has a very personal, global vibe to it, as opposed to the mass-marketed, quasi-hipster vibe you'd get at a coffee-only place or Starbucks. I agree with another review on here that it feels like being at someone's very tasteful home as opposed to a chain joint. Because I tend to like bigger, more open spaces to do work with more people around I'd probably only come back here as a change of pace, but if you're looking to support local or hardworking craftspeople all over the world by purchasing their goods you'll really like Trade Roots. They have a great cause behind them. read more

The best local place for a chai latte!! Adorable gifts and friendly folks working here. Great local shop!

I make a habit of buying only fair trade (no child or slave labor) gifts for the holidays and this shop has the best selection. I've purchased scarves, earrings, necklaces, bread warming baskets, salad servers, salt & pepper shakers, kids purse, and many ornaments here. All wonderful and reasonably priced for fair trade. read more

This store is awesome! It has items that are handmade by people in poorer countries. They use the "fair trade" system so the crafters get a fair amount of money in exchange for their products. My favorite items include the hand carved heart rocks, and their beautiful scarves. read more
