Quite honestly, I don't think I have ever had to apply such a firm tone to get a salesperson to stop upselling. I walked into the store and I got gangbanged by two clerks. I told them I just wanted to browse a bit. They kept pushing, so I told them I was interested in black flats. Then they just plied me with shoes and never stopped talking..."Do you want these neon orange Tom's?", "They are too small? Why don't I keep bringing you a half size too small". When I did make a selection, the guy tried to sell me socks and then he demonstrated how fabulous the waterproofing solution was. He tried to keep going, but I told him that I just wanted the shoes.
Got home, tried on the shoes that were uncomfortable and too small for my feet. All this could be avoided if I had just a minute of quiet time in the store to try on the shoes properly. I returned them and they tried to upsell me again.
Please note Tradehome...upselling is a technique that works if you have needs of the customer in mind. Prattling on for the sake of increasing your sales commission is obvious and tacky. If you want to walk that risky upsell line, shut up and listen to your customers needs. I will be shoe shopping in KC from here on out. read more
