Goodwill - Example of Floor arrangement

    Goodwill

It's no secret that I can be critical of Goodwill Stores. I've long loved the idea behind Goodwill,…read moreof course, as I'm all for anything that helps people get into competitive wage jobs. This is especially true for those with disabilities. However, far too often I've found Goodwill to be lacking in accessibility and questionable in customer service. While the clothing is certainly less than retail, I also often find it to be overpriced, incorrectly sized, and often in disrepair. In short, I often find Goodwill stores to be a good idea poorly implemented. There are exceptions and my visit today to the Danville Goodwill was a definite exception. This is one of the newer Goodwill stores, though I'll admit to being surprised I'm writing the first review. This is located in a free-standing building just inside the Danville limits. It's in the area with the Wal-Mart, Culver's, and Tractor Supply. It's a newer building that's well maintained. Parking is plentiful, accessible parking is nicely done, automatic doors are included, and I found most of the shelving is nicely accessible. I did not check the job kiosk (often a failure in Goodwill stores as they are notoriously inaccessible). There were lots of things nicely done here - aisles were a little bit wider, the store was brightly lit, and the aisle for check-out was clear and obvious with two super friendly cashiers working today. I mean, I was seriously impressed with both employees. The young woman who checked me out, I believe her name was Kaili, was friendly and helpful and even offered help getting the bag to my car (I'm a wheelchair user, I should explain). She served up the usual question about my being a rewards member. She also requested I round up (which I typically do and did today). I found products organized well and prices clearly marked. Having gotten home with several clothing items and one book, I've found nothing incorrectly sized or in disrepair. While I'm not quite willing to call this a 5-star experience, I'll easily give it a 4-star rating and say that this is undeniably one of the more pleasant Goodwill shopping experiences in Central Indiana. While the design is fairly typical for Goodwill, the atmosphere is pleasant, the employees are friendly and helpful, and the entire shopping experience is pleasant, well organized, effective, and efficient. As I'm spending more time in Hendricks County these days, there's no doubt I'll return as I was pleased with selection and the overall experience.

    Shiloh Crossing Shopping Center

Shiloh Crossing is a fairly well spread-out shopping plaza located in Avon, Indiana right along…read moreRockville Road (US 36). It's not connected, so calling it a mall or shopping center would be inaccurate. It's also much less connected than Hamilton Town Center. However, all of the stores and restaurants fall under Shiloh Crossing. These include Michael's, Total Wine, Ford's Garage, Indiana Members Credit Union (one of the nicer ones), Best Buy, Portillo's, Donato's, Texas Roadhouse, Michael's, and a couple others. There's also a USPS drop-off box. This is definitely one of those corner shopping centers where you can snag an awful lot of things you want to do. About the only thing not here would be some type of grocery option. Unfortunately, they're disconnected enough that you can't really park in one place and visit them all. However, they do really have groupings - Portillo's, IMCU, and Ford's Garage are all easily within walking distance. There's also a small strip building with 3-4 of the options. So, it's all pretty convenient. I also find the turn-in a bit awkward here. You either have to turn off US 36 and go in around the side or you need to head in at the very end of the strip center. If you're going directly to IMCU or Ford's, for example, you can't really do a direct turn-off. This is both a heavy retail area and pretty strong residential area with a large apartment complex right around the corner. Truthfully, I don't think I've ever had a bad experience at any of these stores. I find this to be the friendliest IMCU in Central Indiana and the friendliest Portillo's. While the movie theater here is older, it's good enough and definitely has friendly employees. As I was cleaning out my father's home after his passing, I found myself at this corner a lot either banking, grabbing a meal, or simply decompressing the emotions (No, not at Total Wine. Tempting, though). While this really isn't a destination shopping center (other than having one of only two Ford's Garage locations in Central Indiana), it's definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

And of course an adjacent cinema for your viewing pleasure. Stop by Michael's, Total Wine, Best Buy and other stores to keep our economy going. It's a couple storefronts away from Danville Dips. I love bookstores like The Authors' Patch. It "feels" like it's designed by a writer with its wood interior, warm atmosphere, and inspired decor. The Authors' Patch is bigger than you expect it to be. You can grab a drink, grab a chair, and immerse yourself in a diverse reading selection that includes local authors (including Valt), rare finds, used books, new selections, and more. The Authors' Patch hosts book signings (If I ever finish that ever elusive second book, I could easily see myself saying "The Authors' Patch, please?" I didn't get much time here, however, it was a sublime way to wind down after an emotional day clearing out my father's home. You can park on the town square (free 2-hour parking for most folks; 5-hour parking for disabled/accessible spots). The Authors' Patch does have a very slight step going into it, a point to note for those with accessibility needs. The bookstore itself is surprisingly accessible - only a couple tight spots. Again, I didn't get much time here. There's no doubt I'll be back when there's time to really browse and relax. Fun facts about the owner - she previously worked on the Child Sex Abuse Team for DCS. She lives in Danville with her husband on a farm that includes donkeys, cows, chickens, alpacas, and goats. I love indie bookstores. This locally owned, author owned bookstore is an absolute gem with a writer's vibe, a creative energy, and a warm sense of welcome. The Authors' Patch offers free wifi along with a variety of drinks or snacks for purchase. There's no question I'll be back.

Grab a drink and pick a table or chair to go on a little escape. There are several books and a checker table in the children's area. At the cash register you'll find cool bookmarks and some things made on their 3D printer. They also sell a few snacks and some drinks for you to enjoy.
