Character named Mallory with a binge eating disorder. Wow... is this about my teenage life?

What a great find! Near my sister's townhome is this small, local bookstore that focuses on carrying a wonnderful selection of underrepresented authors and a decent amount of progressive merch and bookish goodies with a great selection of contemporary romance books in particular. I saw some Regency/historical romances but I would have liked more as that is a fave genre of mine and queer/minority historical romances are really popular nowadays! I only bought a small magnet as everything is sold at full list price and I was only walking around with a few dollars on me (this trip was unplanned) but I hope to come back here on my next Indy visit! FYI- Loudmouth has its own book clubs and is active on social media. Check it out!

Went on a black owned bookstore tour today and came across this place. It was very cute and cozy and the service was great. Even though they didn't have exactly what I was looking for, I saw a bunch of books that are on my list. Love the area set up for kids. Can't wait to bring my littles. If ever downtown Indy, drop by this black, woman owned bookstore. May find some good reads in this little gem.

I came across this bookstore on a list of Black owned bookstores and since it was close to home, I had to go check it out. It's very cute and cozy and they had a great selection of books to choose from. A lot of these books are on my TBR list so I had a hard time choosing. Cassie was really warm and friendly and she helped me find a book to suit my current reading mood. She also had lots of great recommendations that I added to my reading list for later. I look forward to my next visit. Fyi- If you plan on visiting, you should utilize the street parking and not the parking lot next-door as that is resident parking and they will tow your car.

I've been meaning to stop in here and finally had the chance, it's a beautiful space with very friendly service, they offer a wide selection of books, with many topics that I don't feel like you don't see in big box stores which I appreciate, they also have stickers, buttons and bags! Stop in if you have the chance, there is something for everyone!

Are you a literary loudmouth? Do you crave original voices? Do you tend to shy away from mass retail in favor of the indie voice? Then, Loudmouth Books may very well be for you. Started by Indy based bestselling author Leah Johnson, Loudmouth Books is an independently owned and operated bookstore and community space. Loudmouth hosts author events, children's story hour, and other events all free and open to the public. The goal is simple - increasing access to diverse literature for all Hoosiers including, yes, ensuring access to banned books. Loudmouth is "a Black, queer, woman-owned Indianapolis-based independent bookstore dedicated to highlighting banned books and uplifting the work of marginalized authors." As a disabled author who has written regularly about such things as sexual violence, disability/ableism, and loss/grief, my creative heart longs for a place like Loudmouth Books. We say we want the independent bookstores, but do we go out of our way to support them? The presence of a place like Loudmouth Books brings my heart joy, but that joy is meaningless if I don't support it. So, even though I'm only a few weeks past major cancer surgery I had to stop by one day after a clinic appointment to support this up-and-comer. Loudmouth is surprisingly accessible (there's a bit of a lip at the door) and easy to get around. It's a relatively small bookstore with books and gifts (check out the candles - perfection). You can also support them on Bookshop.org. The employee when I was here was super friendly and helpful. I've yet to attend an event here, though I certainly plan to do so. Loudmouth is pretty darn close to Dream Palace. There's easily room for both. They both have unique vibes and deserve our love. I'm excited about the resurgence of the indie bookstore in Indy. I first got my big boost as a writer from Dreams & Swords in Broad Ripple and will forever be grateful for those bookstores that empower the indie voice. Started in response "ongoing book banning attacks that target BIPOC and queer books and authors. At Loudmouth, we'll always loudly and proudly proclaim our passion for stories by, for, and about marginalized people," says Johnson. Count me in. I'll be back.

I'm a fan of a good bookstore and especially one that is local and owned by a woman! Leah Johnson owner and author opened Loudmouth here in Indy. This charming corner holds everything you ever wanted in a bookstore. They have a ton of new LGBTQIA+ books that you should absolutely read and add to your home library. It's so important to support this community and I will do everything in my power to make this happy reading place stay in Indy. Not only do they have shelves full of books for all ages and all genres but they have the cutest little bags, stickers and button collections in their store front. A great place to read, bring your kids for readings, and join the book club!

I am so glad that Indy is getting more small bookstores and Loudmouth Books is an incredible addition to the community! It's owned by local author Leah Johnson and focuses on minority authors and banned books. The curation is incredible and the space is designed thoughtfully. It's small but mighty and never feels overcrowded. I love how bright it is and the children's section is adorable. Such a great bookstore! Perfect for browsing or gifts!

Omg the most beautiful colorful joyful store! I have been following on instagram since they opened, but finally visited during the Indy indie bookstore crawl and fell in love! It was pretty crowded that day so I look forward to visiting on a normal day and really taking my time. I love all the color and highlight a diverse range of authors and genres. The kid's area with a little tent is so cute too. Fun gift section too. The inside just screams "joyful" to me so I think it would be a fun place to go if you need a little pick me up!

The Whispering Shelf features a fabulous assortment of stationery/ cards, gifts, books with handwritten recommendations (always a sucker for these little personal touches from a bookstore) and an expensive children's section. I was especially enamored by the children's section and display. There were several interactive elements to keep kids busy while you peruse the shelves (smart!). Its a medium sized spot but they fit a childrens corner in. I was pleased to find vintage Richie Rich and Sugar and Spike comic books for 1.00. This was certainly a wonderful place to stumble upon which had alot of gems inside. The vintage type writers were a really cool touch as well. Everything about this place was inviting and warm. Their collection blends books and zines you haven't heard of yet with popular titles you often see and ones in between. There's a local author shelf and there's a fun mix of local talent there in a variety of genres and age categories--plus sometimes, signed copies. They do carry some gift items like candles, and their custom stickers and apparel make me smile. The little book guys are fun! Tomorrow is well worth a stop if you're downtown. Whether you're wanting a book haul or supporting local with a sticker purchase, you'll find something here. Parking on Mass Ave is metered, but free on Sundays! There's also a parking garage nearby, and if you don't mind a walk, you may find some of the limited free street parking.

I purchased a book that's been on my to-read list for some time (Nightbitch) and a new book that I've never heard of before, but was very intrigued by (Strange Pictures). Knocking 1 star off because there is a very bad odor, like something is wrong with the plumbing, inside the whole shop and it cut my visit way shorter than I had planned because I couldn't stand breathing it in any longer.

They had a really nice collection of books across all genres, though I never bought any so I don't know how pricing was. The main seating area was also nice, with some bar seating, some smaller tables, and a larger meeting table. I think the pricing was reasonable. My only hiccup was not realizing they had a decent sized tea menu, because they didn't have tea listed on their wall menu, instead leaving it to a laminate on the counter which I didn't see until I already placed my order. I got a chai latte that was pretty good but I found it to be rather sweet. I can't say I'd come back again, mostly because I can't come back again. I would never really recommend the building for wheelchair users, though I've managed to get around it fairly well. The building began development in 1921 and was completed in 1922. Like many Masonic Lodges, the ground floor was intentionally designed to allow for retail spaces as this would help support the Lodge. If you're familiar with the Irvington Lodge, then you know that it bears on it the rather ominous "Lodge #666" marking. It seems fitting to have this be in a neighborhood recognized for its many haunted locations, but there's no denying it even creeps me out a bit. The building was rumored to be the host of Ku Klux Klan meetings in the 1920s - KKK Grand Dragon D.C. Stephenson lived only a few blocks away in a mansion on University Avenue. Until 1950, the Lodge also hosted the Irvington Post Office. The Irvington Lodge continues to be an actively utilized building. Retail spaces are taken by Irvington Vinyl & Books, Hampton Designs Studio & Shop, and LVLUP Gaming Lounge. Additionally, Mosaic Church uses the Lodge's entire 3rd floor. Accessibility is most challenging in the 1st floor retail spots, though I noticed during my recent visit that Irvington Vinyl & Books had installed a bit of a ramp trying to help the situation. It's certainly not ADA, though it is an improvement. You can get into the first floor of the lodge. There is an elevator to the 2nd and 3rd floors. The 2nd floor includes a theatre room, reception room, a fully functioning kitchen, and a buffet area. You can rent these facilities and the rates are pretty market friendly. The Theatre Room has over 2300 square feet and many period touches still in place. It's rather stunning. The Reception Room is right about 1400 square feet. The 3rd floor has a couple of large main rooms. Hardwood floors are in place throughout and there's a stunning balcony that would be great for a wedding (unless you're in a wheelchair - then it would suck). This is one of those buildings I can't help but love. I'd give almost anything to have an office here, though it would inherently be a not particularly wheelchair friendly one. You also have close proximity to the Irving and nearby Irvington area businesses. Renting the facilities requires the usual liability insurance in place and a deposit, though rates are pretty friendly. They don't have preferred vendors - so, it offers flexibility that some venues don't. The Irvington Lodge was acquired, I believe, around late 2017-2018 by longtime Eastside resident Yasha Persson and a team. Given the pandemic was right around the corner, it was a challenging time to acquire such a beautiful building. However, here's hoping it continues to be such a beautiful, vibrant part of Irvington.
