Over 20% of the facility is out of service and according to the website/front desk, there's no director or branch manager which makes sense considering the state of disrepair the facility is in. This YMCA location is conveniently located in Austin downtown, with a huge parking lot and plenty of gym equipment as well as an Olympic sized pool. The pool area includes a hot tub and a mini heated pool too. The bathrooms could use some updating but other than that it's one of the best YMCA's around town. read more

5 Stars - My Happy Place - Fresh Vibes Only YMCA Town Lake is seriously the best. The dry sauna, steam sauna, indoor pool, and jacuzzi are all sparkling clean and actually inviting -- not sketchy like some other gyms. I bring my two gorgeous daughters here and feel completely comfortable. Honestly, the only creep I've had to deal with was my ex, and he doesn't count. Bonus points: it doesn't even smell like a gym! They've got indoor pickleball courts too, if you're feeling sporty. And if you wander downstairs to the free weights area... just know that's where all the good-looking, gym-crushing people hang out. I have to say the swim class for my 7 year old was a steal. The classes are 40 minutes long and after wards he can swim in the smaller side pool to practice what he has just learned. And as a parent I can watch from the hot tub. Other places are quite expensive and they kick you out right at 30 minutes. And as a parent, you are often sitting shoulder to shoulder next to other families and their screaming kids. Give them a try.... I think you might see the value like I did. read more

I've been coming here for over a year as a Nationwide member. My review docks two starts due to inadequate customer service. Recently, there was an internal system issue that made my nationwide status come up as "ineligible", but as a paying member, I had the associate check with my home gym which subsequently confirmed my membership over the phone. This location was unable to leave a note for the front desk and requested that I come through and "have a conversation" everyday with an associate until THEIR system issue is resolved. I figured they could just let their staff know to avoid having me stand in line 10 minutes with every gym visit, but apparently this was not an option. I was unimpressed by the lack of accommodation, given what seems to be a simple issue. I like the amenities, mainly the weight room, and there is ample parking. If customer service improves, I'd be happy to revisit this review, but at this time, I'm less than satisfied. read more

I'm disappointed to leave this review but I was harassed by a member at the Townlake location. I used to think this was an easy going gym and good for all people but I take that back. The don't pratice their values and long-term members are given the exclusive treatment. While using the equipment, a male member demanded that I let him use it for a quick rep, although I was not finished. I had one rep to go and was taking a break between them, while quickly forwarding an email. As I did this, he hovered over me, shouted and demanded I learn some gym etiquette with his finger pointed in my face. Although I reported this to managment, I still left feeling upset and scared. I can no longer recommend this location. It's not a safe place for women or ateast women of color. And to make it worse, managment did not take the proper steps in remedying this sitation - I was told he would be spoken to. If you are considering this gym for your kids classes, I think its fine. However, as a female member who may feel uncomfortable going to a gym - this is likely not for you. Male members get away with disrespecting women and management does nothing to remedy it. read more

I love this Y. Their employees are kind, helpful, and professional, and the building is beautiful and conveniently located to downtown. The therapy pool is a great asset for community members -- like my son -- who have a disability and benefit from swimming/exercising in warm water all year round. read more

What a shame that such a beautiful facility that receives community and donor money is such a mess. Better management would go a long way. There have been many times when I have arranged childcare to come in for a group exercise class and show up to learn that the instructor isn't there - or a class has been canceled but it hasn't been updated online. Sometimes the Wi-Fi isn't working in the group exercise room and the class gets interrupted because the instructor can't play the music. Or another time when the childcare hours were incorrect on the website. Or the time at the end of 2022 when their reception phones weren't working for like a month so you couldn't get in touch with anyone there. Or all the times that the A/C has gone out and it's unbearable to work out there. Or the time when their online sign-up was so glitchy that you couldn't sign kids up for swim lessons. I could go on. From what I can tell, part of the problem is that they hire people for part-time positions when those jobs probably require someone full-time (like the group exercise manager position). The board of the Y needs to take a deep look at the dysfunction here and figure out what's wrong, because this represents huge amount of community funding that's going to waste. read more

Finally decided to cancel my membership... They recently made some changes to the type of equipment they offer and the atmosphere of the weight room. They added speakers and started blasting music in the weight room, it is god-awful and SO LOUD. It can't be blocked out with noise cancelling headphones. I tried to work the the director Shaq Brown on this but he just responds some variation of "we are addressing this issue" without making any changes- For some reason this director is really obsessed with the music despite numerous member complaints. The final straw for me is their recent changes to the equipment, which actually made the equipment selection worse. They kept only 1 smith machine and didn't get any more, so it's nearly impossible to plan around being able to use it since somebody else is always on it. They got rid of certain machines such as the hip and glute abductor. They also got rid of the calf raise machine. I dread going to the gym now, and every time I come here i just leave annoyed! So sad because I've actually been a YMCA member since i was a child, I even learned how to swim here, and I love all the staff. read more

I have a feeling as time progresses, this location can get to a 5 star, but there are some flaws related to price/quality ratio. Overall, I have enjoyed my experience thus far, and encourage those who are only parents to consider this option for their exercising needs. Two stars have been lost due to: 1. Cleanliness (Re-usable towels and spray bottles needed, or paper towels and spray bottles needed, please remove the purell station, the majority of the people at the gym never wipe their machines because of this.) 2. Programs available (A competitive gymnastics studio inside of an Austin location would be excellent. The Saratoga YMCA in Upstate NY so many more programs and have the same cost of membership.) 3. Cost too high, and should consider single parents, as the difference between a two parent membership versus a one parent membership is only a $10.00 different, while a two parent/two child household would have a 56% discount in price while an one parent/one child membership does not receive any discount. Pros: * Their Child Watch is 1.5 hours and FREE for members. * They are the only child watch location that I know of that allows you to run outside! That's huge to any only parent who likes to run outside. *** * They have a nice cardio area and appears they have some good group classes. * Austin is really into yoga, and they have a great studio space for that. * Southwest YMCA has a fantastic outdoor pool area for the kiddos which includes a slide and a mushroom waterfall. * They have self locking key lockers, so no more tokens or leaving your items unsecured. * Availability in their after-school child care programs. * Child watch has a lot of toys and space, and have hours every single day. Cons: * Cost is too high. I am thankful for the parking being free, but the southwest branch is SO out of date, I will most likely never go. It has an aroma due to the age of the building and the workout area being open versus separated from the remaining areas. * Gaps in availability of child care programs during the week prior to school beginning. * Cleanliness is not there due to not providing the tools needed to keep things clean. * Program availability is underwhelming for the size of the community. I'm confident there will be growth within these branches of the YMCA, but it will take lots of fundraising and getting city involvement for land rights etcetera. Judging from it being identical to the branch in New York State (srymca.org) I'm guessing this is a suggested value level by the Y corporate. I will be considering joining a different gym once my daughter is old enough to no longer need child care.. The gymnastics program is too far out of town and has poor interactive hours. The program at srymca.org is phenomenal and is financed within the same membership rates as what is held here. I will update my review as improvements are made, as the YMCA is always striving to be the best they can be :) read more

Great gym. I have visited many gyms around the country and world, as well as in central Austin; I feel like overall the YMCA is 5 stars. Pros: - Reasonable pricing, especially compared to the other nearby gyms like Pure, Spark, Castle Hill. - Good equipment. I use the weight room - specifically free weights and pullup bars, and there is always enough during off-peak hours, and enough to either work in or do an alternative exercise during peak hours. Specifically, there are 2 squat racks, 2 trap bars, 2 deadlift bars, 2 flat bench presses, many, many dumbbells, several pullup stations. There is also incline bench, decline bench, 1-2 Smith machines, 2 stretching mats, additional yoga mats, plyometrics equipment, boxing area. And there is every kind of machine you could want for those of you who do strength machine training. - The showers are acceptable, much much better than Gold's downtown (more spacious, much bigger locker room, many more showers). - Good location right between the lake/trail and downtown. - Staff is nice. - Plentiful parking for those who drive, have never been unable to find a parking spot. Cons: - When classes are hosted in the TRX area at peak hours (couple nights/week), the # of pullup stations gets effectively chopped significantly and it's hard to find a place to do weighted chins/pull-ups. - Some people don't want to allow you to work in on their equipment. I find that most are nice, but not 100%. - Wish there were a back entrance/more accessible to walking in general. Granted, a lot of this is not the YMCA's fault - they have to deal with the train and being right next to Lamar, so a lot of it is the city of Austin/Union Pacific's fault. It is annoying to wait for the train as a walker, though (though there is a long-cut, walking on the Lamar sidewalk, that avoids this). read more

Love, Love, Love this place. I am kicking myself for not joining sooner. Right next to TownLake. Go for a run, come back lift or swim, maybe a little yoga, shower, and go about your business. The YMCA has been upgraded with great cardio and weight lifting equipment. They have a boxing and kickboxing area, gym, indoor pool, a variety of classes that are free with membership and tons of options within those classes. Generally speaking, everyone I have met at the Y has been very pleasant. The thing I like the most is the since of community. You have folks of all different economic classes and ages going to the gym. The Townlake YMCA provides a good melting pot of people. I have had conversations with some pretty funny older folks and always walk away smiling or learning something new. I have worked out at 24 Hours, Golds Gyms, Planet Fitness, and many more, but no place had every felt more like home than the Y. read more

Beautiful location, great fitness instructors, nice size indoor pool. My kids enjoy coming with me to this location. They recently changed their check-in process for the childcare; no more health screenings. This was originally why I chose the Y for my gym, so I don't know why they've done away with the health screenings: checking for head lice, and general health questions, especially given covid. Also, women: do not use the hot tub! I don't know what kind of chemicals they use but, beware! It will totally throw off the PH balance in your lady parts!! I still enjoy this location but just a couple of things to keep in mind. read more

Been a member for a year but cancelled today... The facility is nice and the equipment meets my needs, but there are a few things that led me to move on. First, while the staff are doing a good job navigating the Covid pandemic, the latest approach is to hand members a spray bottle on the way in and ask them to wipe down all equipment before and after use. We were already doing this but now we have to lug a large spray bottle around and the staff are no longer doing any cleaning--they basically sit around and look at their phones while patrons do the work. That's like going to a restaurant and having the waiter hand you a rag and tell you to clean your own table before and after you eat, while he sits nearby and looks at text messages. Also, members have random ways of cleaning and many just spray a ton of disinfectant on everything and don't even wipe it down. As a result a lot of the equipment is getting rusty. Staff who are sitting around could also be maintaining equipment, which I never see being done. For example, all the fixed-weight barbells are loose and the Allen screws need to be tightened--yet no one bothers. No one bothers to lubricate critical machine parts either, or keep free weight plates distributed throughout the facility. In short, it appears that the staff are more interested in their phones than in maintaining the equipment. The other bigger problem for me is too much politically-correct programming, It's one thing to be a welcoming place for all, it's another to promote social justice causes. I'm there to work out, not receive political instruction. The irony is that YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association. There's nothing remotely reflective of that orientation to be found anywhere. Inclusiveness apparently only extends so far. Whatever your beliefs, keep them to yourself and focus on the member experience--that's the best way to promote inclusiveness. read more

This bare-bones, meat and potatoes kind of gym (complete with indoor pool) probably has one of the best locations for a gym on Town Lake just west of Lamar. The facility, however, doesn't match that new and shiny gym feel like Pure Austin, and was susceptible to a flood when I was a member, closing the lower weight room for over two weeks. Staff seemed nonchalant about it, and really, there was nothing they could do, but didn't even want to go there.. Not the friendliest peeps working here, and unless you collaborate with the membership lady with pay stubs to get a reduced rate (headache), etc., the monthly fees are the same as Pure Austin. read more

Well, 7-ish months later and my original review still stands. There's a good bit of blah, blah, blah in that one, so if you're up for more details? Check it out! Anyhoo...we'll (try to) keep this one shorter and semi-sweeter: GOOD (to maintain!): Good selection of cardio/weight machines and weights +1 Generally friendly staff/clientele +1 BAD (to do!!): Fix the water pressure/fountains (the one by the upstairs restroom is a sad, dribbling joke, and the other closest to the free weight area is only slightly better) {p.s. nobody wants to french a communal water fountain and I'm NOT using the one in the locker room by the urinals} -1 Clean/lubricate/better maintain and/or modernize the older machines (most make me think of/feel the need for a tetanus booster) -1 Redo/modernize the lockers and/or locker room (speaking of tetanus boosters if not antibiotics) -1 BOTTOM LINE: Decent gym that needs better maintaining/updating. (side note: I'm praying to the gym gods for another, better, relatively affordable option in this downtown corner. Like the supposed one, I don't think anyone's listening...haHA) read more

To all the LADIES out there using this facility especially the swim area: WATCH OUT for dudes with douchy, misogynistic attitude cause YMCA staff will certainly not be looking out for you. Simply put, ladies are not safe in this pool, they are at the mercy of whomever is using the facility, cause the staff members won't lift a finger to make you feel safe and secure. I have been eyed and creeped out by men in this facility many times but today the harassment reached a new low and the lack of response and support form multiple staff members of the Y has made me utterly disappointed: I am a female swimmer and I use this branch only for its swimming facility. Sadly, I had the misfortune of being harassed by two men in the late 60's or 70's (One had a British accent, the other seemed American) here today. They seemed to be friends and from what I heard from another female swimmer who was watching the incident, they had a reputation for harassing women in the pool area. The management did nothing to stop or address the harassment during or after. The lifeguards looked away and pretended like nothing was happening, even though the men's comments were too loud to be ignored (the men were harassing me for my ethnicity/nationality out of nowhere. They literally stopped me from swimming twice by yelling over at me to ask where I was from. I had no idea why all of a sudden I am being stopped from swimming and have to answer some questions about who I am and where I'm from! When I refused to answer they called me "sassy" and when I called them rude, they showed me their middle fingers. I asked for the management to handle the guys. The young girl who stepped in as the "manager" told me if the guys are bothering me maybe i should swim further away from them and left the pool area!!!! I talked to another female manager about the incident afterwards and asked if YMCA has any protocol in place for stopping harassment in general and specifically in their pool area and she explicitly said they don't. She also asked if they guys harassing me were my friends?!?!!? Utterly disappointed and appalled by the management's response... read more

I chose the Y as a second gym because two coworkers, who talked me into the Danskin, swim at the Y, and we train together on Mondays. I do have to drive farther, but they don't. So, we go to "their" Y to swim together. Last Monday: Jen M "So, where are the towels?" Mel B "What towels? Didn't you bring a towel?" Jen M "Why would I? Doesn't your Y give you towels?" Mel B "No. Yours does? Dang, looks like you are going without" Jen M "Great. I'm not dripping dry. You are sharing your towel." Mel B "Do you guys have towels?" Lifeguard "No. I think some do. I've been a member of the Y for about six months now, and overall it's been a really positive experience. I've spent most of my time in the pool, though I've also been to the gym a few times, and I checked out a spin class or two. Parking here can be pretty crowded at times, though I've never been unable to find a spot. They have a lap pool, a smaller childrens pool, and a hot tub. The lap pool can get pretty crowded at times. If you're going just to swim laps, you may want to check the schedule online or via the app before you go. There are a lot of leagues, aqua fit classes, masters groups, etc., so sometimes there's only a lane or two free for lap swimming. There's also one lane that's usually reserved for open swim. Sometimes the pools shut down for a day or so due to a "chemical rebalancing" aka somebody pooped in the pool. Yuck. They also close for 30 minutes whenever there's a lightning strike, which isn't standard practice for all indoor pools. I took an adult swimming course here earlier this year, and it was a great value. Very reasonably priced and the class was pretty small - maybe six people? They also have a dry sauna and a steam room, which, along with the hot tub, are great for relaxing after a workout. There are a bunch of locker rooms, which is awesome. For women, there's a pool-specific locker room, a locker room for women with children, and another locker room only for adult women. It's great! I've never had to wait for a shower or spend much time searching for an open locker. Their pricing is really reasonable. My boyfriend and I share a couples/household (I'm blanking on what exactly it's called) membership, and I believe it's around $75 a month for both of us. read more

The YMCA is the best gym I've ever belonged to. They have it ALL, and for much cheaper than any other gym or fitness group around. Clean facilities Pool with extra wide lanes, and free flippers, kickboards, pull buoys, etc. to borrow while you swim (and rarely is there a wait for two-to-a-lane) Huge cardio floor w/ new equipment and a TV at every machine A wide array of classes at all hours, taught by excellent instructors Free Third Coast Coffee, and a patio to enjoy it on Diverse staff and membership really make it feel like a COMMUNITY, people are friendly and the atmosphere feels welcoming and accepting of all My friends all joined and we'll often make a day of it - grab a coffee, lift weights, swim, and then enjoy the sauna. Heavenly! There are spinning gyms (for example) that charge an arm and a leg just for that one thing, and they don't enrich your life in any way except giving you a place to sweat for an hour a day. I couldn't be happier with the Town Lake Y. I joined last fall and have used the facility a few times a week ever since then. Here's what I like: * The renovated facility is gorgeous and has an open airy feel that makes it enjoyable to be in. I typically loiter for awhile after my workout when I can, to take a look at the newspaper or catch up on email. * The facility has a diverse clientele and doesn't feel like a meat market. I am contrasting this to 24-Hour Fitness and Golds Gym locations where I have worked out in the past. There are many different ages, body types, and races using the gym. * I mostly use the weight room and generally have access to squat/power rack and bench press whenever I workout. Occasionally I have to work in, in peak times like MWF in the morning before work hours. People generally re-rack their weights and there are staff cruising around who take care of the re-racking every hour or so if someone doesn't do their own. As a woman, I feel comfortable in the free weight area and often see a few other women there while I am working out. * The drop-in daycare is great. The facility is clean and open and well-staffed. They have limits on how many kids they will take at one time, but I have only had to wait once or twice. Staff are friendly and know my toddler, who has a lot of fun there and ASKS to go back. * The pool facility is large and has a warm "instructional" pool that is shallow enough for kids to practice in. Occasionally that pool will be closed for a class but the ramp area of the main pool remains open and can be used by kids in that time. I haven't had time to do lap swimming there but I have never noticed the lanes looking overcrowded. * The women's locker area is very large and is always kept clean. Showers are nice & hot and the facility is never over crowded. There are various nooks and changing areas where you can have privacy if you don't like changing around people. * The basketball gym is often in use by people playing pick-up, but there are open hours when you can practice shooting or use the air-conditioned court for other indoor workouts if the weather is bad. * Schedules for the pool, basketball gym, and classes are kept up to date with an online app, so you can check ahead of time and make sure what you want to use is open. read more

The Y fits my needs perfectly. Signing up was quick and painless, and if you can provide the name of a current member then they waive the new member fee. The weightlifting area has every machine that I need, and the community is really diverse which makes it feel like a very safe space to be a gym newb. I regularly go around 5-7pm and have never had trouble finding parking. I assume 5-7p is peak time, and so I've invited this upon myself, but sometimes I do have to wait to use a squat rack, bench press, deadlift bar, or one of the chairs for dumbbell use. I'd say that I end up waiting for 1 or 2 things each visit, but it has never been overly inconvenient or taken longer than 5 minutes to get what I need. Overall a pleasant experience every time. The people are nice, and I never feel judged which is the one thing that has held me back from working out in the past. read more

This YMCA is definitely a step above the average Y. The child care is very interactive and my toddler loves it! The yogalates classes and yoga classes have been convenient and better than i had expected them to be. My husband has truely enjoyed the community that has accepted him here. It's not like most gyms where everyone is very segregated and seemingly competitive. He has mostly been into weight lifting and some cardio since starting and his results have been fantastic... Partially because of a healthy environment and kind words of encouragement from employees and patrons alike. They are incredibly convenient to townlake trail and do supply childcare if you want to run around the lake. We have been to many gyms in Austin and for many reasons this one has been a wonderful fit for our family. I hope it will be for many years to come. The only reason a i decided to not make it a 5 star reviews is only because i wish the childcare was open longer hours on Saturday and my husbands wishes they opened earlier then 5:30am daily. read more

I had been debating about joining a gym for a while. I had been going to a local group fitness studio, but I needed more. After weighing the options, the Y was the best fit for me. It is so easy to drive the five minutes from the office after work to go there to workout. Sometimes parking can be a little nuts, but I always manage to find a space fairly quickly. Friday evenings are my favorite for a good treadmill date because there's hardly anyone in there. I've taken the AquaFit class with Liza and I really enjoy it and it is definitely a great class for low impacters. No one cares what you look like in a bathing suit- just come out and move. On my more intense days, I've also done my staple Zumba- but this location has Turbo Kick (my favorite format). I've had folks at other gyms tell me Turbo Kick is the same as kickboxing, but it really isn't (I would know, I'm certified to teach TK). I love that the classes fit well into my schedule. The facility itself is clean and up-to-date. They have an excellent setup where- while the place is child-friendly- I don't have to worry about rouge children running around in the womens' locker room. With my membership, I can visit other Y locations, but this one fits into my life the best out of all of them. I enjoy visiting them each week. My only drawback is that the price is steeper than many of the gyms out there, but not as steep as others. read more

What else can I say? This location is undergoing construction, with much needed improvements. Despite the construction the facility does have great equipment and an area with a punching bag which helps me relieve tension. I just picture someone like Glen Beck, Sarah Palin or Rush Limbaugh and punch and kick away. I always feel so much better after my punching/kicking sessions. This location is really great as it is very close to the Town Lake Hiking/Biking Trail, so it serves a purpose for me to get in a quick strength training workout! read more

Expensive for a Y Spin classes are not worth it. They only have a few clips for shoes and some of them are too loose. I'm not crazy about the other classes either. When I emailed management about the lack of cycle clips, basically his response was 'too bad, it's your problem' by telling me they would not order more pedals and that I should check my shoes to see if they're not right. I mean that's pretty awful customer service if you ask me, at least lie and pretend like you're going to try to solve a customers complaints! read more

I just come here for spin class in the annex that the city of austin provides but it is a gorgeous facility. The front desk staff is always friendly and the cardio equipment looks great. There are community gardens in front. Parking can be a challenge though depending on the day but there are tons of spots. read more

I love love this gym! I love the yoga classes offered. I like the classes for children on Saturday mornings and during the week. Cooking, crafts, asl, games, sports etc. I like how child watch will watch your kids for 2 hours. I like how they will change diapers. I like how the kids can eat snacks. I love the weight room. I love the big pool and hot tub. The pool is nice and warm for the kids and the lap lanes are cold for the swimmers. I love the sauna and steam room. I do not like the impossible parking some days. I do not like how there is a wait on child watch due to under staffing. I do not like how the steam room is under maintenance often. read more

This gym really offers a community vibe. The front desk staff are friendly and the child care staff are amazing! So many smiling faces that know my name and my kids names. You can also tell that the staff love working there and working with each other. At the time I go the parking isn't too bad, but I could see how it would be pretty awful during the busy times. I really wish there was an outside pool, but I joined knowing that it didn't have one. Maybe someday! read more
