The 2 squat racks, 2 Smith machines, and 2 trap bars + 2 deadlift barbells in the corner.

Great gym. I have visited many gyms around the country and world, as well as in central Austin; I feel like overall the YMCA is 5 stars. Pros: - Reasonable pricing, especially compared to the other nearby gyms like Pure, Spark, Castle Hill. - Good equipment. I use the weight room - specifically free weights and pullup bars, and there is always enough during off-peak hours, and enough to either work in or do an alternative exercise during peak hours. Specifically, there are 2 squat racks, 2 trap bars, 2 deadlift bars, 2 flat bench presses, many, many dumbbells, several pullup stations. There is also incline bench, decline bench, 1-2 Smith machines, 2 stretching mats, additional yoga mats, plyometrics equipment, boxing area. And there is every kind of machine you could want for those of you who do strength machine training. - The showers are acceptable, much much better than Gold's downtown (more spacious, much bigger locker room, many more showers). - Good location right between the lake/trail and downtown. - Staff is nice. - Plentiful parking for those who drive, have never been unable to find a parking spot. Cons: - When classes are hosted in the TRX area at peak hours (couple nights/week), the # of pullup stations gets effectively chopped significantly and it's hard to find a place to do weighted chins/pull-ups. - Some people don't want to allow you to work in on their equipment. I find that most are nice, but not 100%. - Wish there were a back entrance/more accessible to walking in general. Granted, a lot of this is not the YMCA's fault - they have to deal with the train and being right next to Lamar, so a lot of it is the city of Austin/Union Pacific's fault. It is annoying to wait for the train as a walker, though (though there is a long-cut, walking on the Lamar sidewalk, that avoids this).

Reasons I love the Town Lake YMCA - Friendly and knowledgable staff - proximity to Downtown - there is always parking - Close to Whole Foods for after ;) - never feels like a meat market - young and old and all sizes and shapes are welcomed - valet parking during peak seasons - big locker room facility -Pool (though I've yet to use) - hot tub (same as above) - sauna and steam room / co-Ed so not my absolute fave, but they are there regardless What can I say - I LOVE going to the gym here and that is a first for this girl :)

Love, Love, Love this place. I am kicking myself for not joining sooner. Right next to TownLake. Go for a run, come back lift or swim, maybe a little yoga, shower, and go about your business. The YMCA has been upgraded with great cardio and weight lifting equipment. They have a boxing and kickboxing area, gym, indoor pool, a variety of classes that are free with membership and tons of options within those classes. Generally speaking, everyone I have met at the Y has been very pleasant. The thing I like the most is the since of community. You have folks of all different economic classes and ages going to the gym. The Townlake YMCA provides a good melting pot of people. I have had conversations with some pretty funny older folks and always walk away smiling or learning something new. I have worked out at 24 Hours, Golds Gyms, Planet Fitness, and many more, but no place had every felt more like home than the Y.

Rebounders. It's all here. I've never seen any other gym anywhere offer so much. Also, the members take care of this place, wiping down equipment, they don't use harsh chemicals either, it's essential oils so the place has a light hint of pine in the air. Also, towel service in included. Although, castle hill fitness isn't the prettiest gym, she has the most heart, I don't feel like a piece of meat in there, and it's kept clean. Def a fan of this place; the staff, and the value.

There are so many amenities...snack shop, free towels, hydro massage chairs, Normatek compression boots, cold therapy chairs, pool, and real massages. The cycle class by dynamic instructor David Garza was quite a workout! It was only 30 minutes long but energy packed! I was familiar with the Soul Cycle type classes, which include push-ups while cycling. But this class introduced dance style moves, such as swaying hips. It was a real dance party! I was exhausted but feeling great afterwards. We partook of the Normatek compression boots, which were good therapy for my recently injured knee. The hydro massage chairs were taken, so we skipped that. All in all, this high end gym was a great experience. I would join, except my insurance does not cover the gym because it is considered "premium."

When I could no longer tolerate the big box gyms, the crowds that flock to them and the bad behaviors that have cropped up over time, I finally made the move to this gym. Sure it's smaller, sure it doesn't have daycare, saunas, pools, giant changing rooms but I consider all those things a plus. People who show up here show up to work out not sit at the sauna and pool all day. The price point is higher than most gyms but not unreasonable. You get what you pay for -- mostly in peace and quiet and an overall more courteous gentler crowd. There is a good mix of equipment that can handle a mix of folks who just want fitness, folks who are into bodybuilding and powerlifters. For the most part all three groups exist in peace. Perhaps the general fitness folks may at times be a little intimidated by some of the louder harder workouts of the powerlifters. But this can be mitigated by changing the time you go. I get overstimulated by such noises so I try to avoid those folks if I can. ( I can be a gentle flower lol) Gender balance. This gym has a very healthy gender balance. Luckily this crowd is not there to find suitors, they are there to work out so no fake eyelashes or clown makeup nor guys just dragging their wings along the ground like turkeys in heat. Please respect this dynamic and don't come here to hit on people. Like most gyms the peak time is 5-7 week days except it's mostly Monday to Wednesday that's somewhat busy during rush hour. But nothing like the big box gyms. It's busy but not impossible to get a workout in like other gyms. Folks are not aggressive with each other, they are kind when they approach you for working in etc. I take a long time at some machines people should be upset but there is no upset, only kindness. They are swapping out some of the equipment and its changes for the better -- mind you what's there is already plenty. This is a small gym floor compared to mix chain gyms. The gym in Lincoln village is slightly larger and the new one in round rock will be huge. The hours are great. Parking is plenty however not endless, sometimes you will have to hunt a little. The gym is clean, bathrooms is clean but could be better. I am just being honest. It's just fine. I have been spoiled by Lifetime and EOS. There is a regular crowd that's been there a long time and they sometimes do exert a little bit of ownership and territorial behavior but they are mostly harmless, they could use the challenge of new faces, and they are perfectly able to adapt and accept newcomers. So don't be intimidated. It's all teddy bears in there. The staff also is amazingly friendly and attentive and keep the place sharp and on top shape and help members. I highly recommend you get a week pass and check it out!

I like that there are water stations and towels available all throughout the gym, as well as TVs throughout the gym to help you through your workout. When I joined, I was given a complimentary personal training session and an intro session, which was really helpful in learning the layout of the gym and different workout configurations that will work best for my body and fitness goals. I have also had the opportunity to check out a bunch of classes, too, and my favorite by far has been sculpt with Natalie or with Jay. The locker rooms are very clean and well-equipped with towels, shampoo/conditioner/lotion, feminine products, hair care technology (blow dryers, flat irons, etc), mouthwash, deodorant, etc. The only thing I will say is that the sauna in the women's locker room is pretty small and only seats 4-5 people. They also keep it at a pretty low heat for a dry sauna (~140-150) for some reason. Nevertheless, it does the job eventually, you just may not have a spot to sit at peak times.
