As you may or may not recall, my parked car was rear-ended by a cyclist some months back. (As…read moredocumented here: http://bit.ly/d7DMwT) Well, I finally got pulled over for the broken taillight, and conceded that it was high time to clean up the ol' Explorer and start looking a teeny less trashy out there on the road. Enter the junkyard. I've driven past Bud's about 800 times, on that part of SE 72nd that does a funny turn and ends up on Johnson Creek. You know it, right? Big corrugated metal fence with "BUD'S AUTO WRECKING" painted on it? Yeah, that's the one. I don't think the guy behind the counter, his friend on the other side, or any of the 4 cats I saw were named Bud. He might have been "Bob," since I saw "Happy Birthday 'Bob'" ("Bob" was in quotes) inscribed on the chalkboard in the smoky, plaque-filled front office that conjured powerful memories of my grandpa's 1950s mechanic shop. This place was awesome. "Bob" was awesome. Even the cats (whom he says people dump, he fixes and lets live there) were pretty freakin' awesome. My stepdad called ahead and "Bob" said they had the part, so we drove down to pick it up. Paid cash, went home to install it, and... ooops, turns out it wasn't quite the right part. So we went back, and as we walked through the door, I heard "Bob" say, "What happened, did I screw ya?" The year was right, but the make was wrong -- no harm, no foul -- he looked for the right one and didn't have any luck. So he punched in the part on his Commodore 64 and found it at a wrecking yard up the road a piece. Called them to make sure they were open and sent me and my cash on my way. I told him I'd always wanted to come by, and he said the next time I need a part, he'll give me a comprehensive tour. If that means I get to climb around on old smashed-up cars, my dreams of being a pre-teen boy in a striped shirt circa 1962 will be one step closer to fruition. I'm already thinking of more parts I need to replace. Thanks to Bud's and "Bob," I'll be a gearhead before you know it.

I can't tell you how many times I've driven by places like this in my lifetime, not giving them a…read moresecond thought. But I had no idea how much money can be saved by scavenging for auto parts here. First of all, I should let you know I have absolutely zero knowledge about car maintenance and repair. What I do know is that car parts, especially from the dealership, are astronomically priced. "You want to charge me how much for this piece of plastic trim that goes around the windshield? You've got to be kidding me!" I recently bought an older subaru for driving my dirty and wet pug back and forth from the river. I wanted to fix a few things that either didn't work, or were cosmetically impaired. Specifically, I was looking for the lid to the sunglass holder in the roof, some plastic flashing for the windshield, speaker covers for the doors in the backseat, and the electric switches for the window control on the driver's door in the same make/model/year Subaru I'd just purchased. It was a tall order, but would you believe me if I told you I found everything I needed for less than $35? Talk about one-stop shopping! It's so difficult to determine how many stars to award this experience. Yes, I found everything I needed for a bargain. However, this has to be one of the most intimidating, uncomfortable, overwhelming places I've ever been. There is a long line to enter the facility as everyone checks in with staff electronically, has a photo taken, and signs a waiver. There are rows and rows of old, rusty cars sitting up on blocks, as far as you can see, and I'm sure the insurance liability is a nightmare. I can only imagine how many injuries occur in this place each year. While vehicles are organized in lots by make and model, it takes a lot of exploration to find exactly what you're looking for. Many of the cars are picked over, having been stripped of the most popular parts and accessories. Not everyone is as lucky as I was my first time out. There's really no customer service to speak of. There is apparently an inventory, and the staff at the front desk are able to look up specific makes and models, but none of the cars I was directed to were where they said they'd be. So I found aimlessly strolling through the rows and rows of cars to be the best way to find what I was looking for. If you're up for an adventure, looking to save a few dollars, and don't mind spending a few hours with some folks who are definitely a little rough around the edges, Pick-n-Pull is just the place you want to be.

At 2:45pm, the call came while I was in the bathroom - so I missed the call. I went to return the call and was told that I would have to RESCHEDULE the pickup for another day. WHAT????? Seriously? That has to be the MOST ridiculous reason for not picking up my car. ONE MISSED attempt to reach me? For crying out loud. I wasted an entire afternoon waiting for your call, and you tried to call me ONE TIME? Don't bother using PickNPull.

They were supposed to send me a photo of the pulled part to make sure it was complete. I had to call their toll free number repeatedly over the span of a week to finally get the pic and told rep yes it looks complete, have it shipped. Heard nothing back over the next week, called again and was informed the part still showed in their system as being held at the yard, they again asked for it to be shipped to me. I then waited and still did not get tracking information from them so I called in again and was told I had to talk to the initial salesperson, and they transferred me to their phone, left voicemail, didn't get a return call, called in yet again and by some miracle got initial salesperson who told me it had shipped and he'd send shipping info shortly (suprise, it hadn't). Recieved another picture from another person of the wrong part, and called them back and got the person in charge of shipping who looked into it and found out the yard had LOST the original part and the part request was being shopped around to other yards in the chain. Got 2 more pictures a fed days later of destroyed parts (obviously tried to remove using a large hammer, destroying part of the assembly and damaging what was left. Each time it got passed to another yard, the sales person at the yard sending it washed their hands of it. I haven't heard anything from them since 4/25/25 and noticed they refunded to my account today, what I paid for the part over a month ago without notifying me they were giving up. I would rate 0 out of 5 if I could. They're a -10 on communication and don't seem to care as soon as they have your money.

This location however was sadly disappointing and borderline insulting. I tried buying two parts and not only did the guy not want to sell them to me, but also laughed at me when I requested the parts. I guess my business wasn't worth his time since he was also on his phone the whole time I spoke to him. I work in customer service which is why I am being so harsh and critical, but little things like this are what makes businesses lose loyal customers like myself. I'll be buying all of my parts from a competitor from now on.
