The food here is phenomenal. The hotel it's located in is even better. I would highly recommend both.

The ambiance is beautifully done, modern coastal. Perfect for a comfortable but elevated dinner. We started with the bread service, chili wontons, and gem lettuce. The bread service was my favorite, warm, soft, and the miso butter was divine. The chili wontons were also a standout, especially if you enjoy dim sum. They had great flavor and balance. The gem lettuce was fresh and simple, reminiscent of Jon & Vinny's in the best way. For entrees we had the butter shrimp and Scottish salmon, both really good, no complaints. But honestly the appetizers stole the show for me. Would definitely come back just to try more of the starters. Such a good spot.

It was a Saturday night and pretty empty, but we did go on the earlier side. Our server was also really friendly and attentive, definitely a highlight. The food just didn't hit for us. The bread service was disappointing and looked nothing like the photos we saw. Not sure if we got the wrong thing, but it wasn't good. The shrimp toast was decent but super heavy. The Caesar was not great, and no one mentioned it comes with whole anchovies on top. I'm fine with anchovy in the dressing, but the actual pieces were a lot. The chicken karaage was okay, again really heavy, but the sauce was the best part. We also tried the taco special which was just alright, nothing memorable. Overall, the vibe and service were good, but the food didn't live up to it. Probably wouldn't come back.

Seems weird but it really worked. Menu didn't say so but came with some really good tomato soup dip also. Love a good food surprise Drinks come next .. wow .. really unique and delicious. American Samurai and Shades of Pink .. both home runs The Sea Bass in coconut lemongrass deliciousness. A bit pricey but fair for Sea Bass and location. The portion was pretty large compared to other places. Excellent Tempura cauliflower.. this was good but the only thing I have any notes on .. I'd like a sauce .. it's has flavorful toppings and something like chili oil on the plate .. wish chili oil was more of a sauce .. but still was very good .. texture was perfect tho .. a little crunchier than traditional tempura which was nice Ambiance was charming .. cute little place .. a must try

I believe everyone enjoyed their dishes, but docking a star as they overcooked the steak frites! We ordered it medium rare but it came to us medium-well done. It is always disappointing to get a steak more done than you requested. They had a seasonal banana foster dessert at the end that was delicious. Service was attentive and pleasant. Definitely a pricier place, but worth it to try the different dishes on the menu!

We probably waited 5-7 minutes before someone acknowledged our presence and came to seat us and check us in for our reservation. Not one server would make eye contact and even going up to the bar to try to get help did not work. When we were finally seated we had to ask for menus once we could catch a server a few minutes later. Some of us ordered drinks and we put in our food orders right away in case our waiter wouldn't come back, since everything had taken so much time already. Our coffees did come but no creamer as discussed, so again we had to flag down a waiter (always took a few attempts) before we could enjoy our coffees. Luckily, our food came out so fast! Our food was in front of us in about 10 minutes from ordering which was insane compared to the rest of the service. Our meals were delicious too! I had the breakfast burrito and did need more salsa for the other half (we had to flag down a server again). My husband gave up waiting for more salsa for his last half of his burrito and just ate it without. My friends had the smoked salmon bagel, avocado toast, and American breakfast. Everyone's meals were honestly fantastic. Finally at the end of our meal, we had to flag down our server to get our check. We ended up just paying with him as soon as he brought the check so we didn't have to wait any longer. The food is worth it but we wouldn't go back intentionally just due to lack of service.

It's located in the old Clock Tower building, and the Art Deco decor is absolutely stunning--dark enough to hide a bad day but vibrant enough for a girls' night. The Vibe: It's loud, lively, and perfectly "bohemian chic". If you're coming on a weekend, prepare for a crowd, but it's the good kind of crowded where everyone looks like they just came from a gallery opening. The Food: I'm still thinking about the Crispy Chicken Sandwich--it was juicy, perfectly seasoned, and came with a fennel-apple slaw that actually felt fresh. We also shared the Bacon Wrapped Dates (obviously) and the Hand Cut Kennebec Fries, which arrive in a bowl so huge it could basically be its own zip code. The Drinks: Their Happy Hour is arguably the best in the city. I had the Japanese Dream with matcha, and it was expertly crafted--not too sweet, which is my biggest pet peeve. The "Misfit" Moment: The service can be a tiny bit slow when it's "rammed," and there's a 4% kitchen fee that feels a bit unnecessary, but they make up for it with those complimentary sea salt chocolate chip cookies at the end. They are warm, gooey, and life-changing. One major heads-up: I heard a rumor they might be closing their doors on April 18th due to some landlord drama, so get there while you still can.

Huh? The manager comes over and says "that's not our policy ". What restaurant refuses to toss a dressing on a salad?! I've dined all over the world and never have encountered this at any restaurant . Never have I ever encountered a restaurant that has hard policies making the customer feel bad for asking for simple pleasures like a tossed salad! The manager and I are going back-and-forth to ask him to please toss the dressing on the salad. My 92-year-old dad was sitting there feeling uncomfortable and resentful of the restaurant. I said to that young male manager, after my dad ordered three chocolate chip cookies ( so cute) why don't you put those cookies on the house, after this horrible conversation about the salad. He said "why would I do that ". Please retrain your managers in hospitality. My previously loved Newporter salad is a disaster now. A limp salad, no dressing, with about 3/4 of a cup of frizee. A shell of its former self And the restaurant a shell its former self. There's so many amazing restaurants in Santa Monica. R& D has gone down the drain. Down below you see a $24 salad. It looks like an appetizer. Dressing on the side. With the wilty dry kale besides it on a separate plate. I strongly suggest trying the divine Wally's in Santa Monica. Or Gjelina in Venice. Don't waste a dime at R&D Kitchen and probably not at the other Hillstone restaurants either. Their staff needs to take a strong lesson from Danny Meyer who owns Sweet Greens & Shake Shack. He's the king of hospitality.

It swings from Vietnamese small plates to a straightforward steak, and the range never settles into a point of view -- it reads less like a confident eclectic kitchen than a grab bag. The fried red snapper was the standout: crisp, well-cooked, good enough to stand on its own. It came with a fish sauce for dipping that it didn't need -- a wedge of lemon on the side would have suited it far better. The Vietnamese crab cake was a real miss; I couldn't get past it. The dumplings were fine but forgettable. Service ran to extremes. Our server was warm and eager, almost too eager -- he pushed a bottle of wine we weren't sold on, and we ordered it anyway. Then, after all that attentiveness, he disappeared toward the end of the meal and never came back. The wine list was fine, nothing memorable. There's real skill in that kitchen -- the snapper proves it -- but the meal never added up to more than its parts. I left full, not delighted.
