You could swim it! Take a right when you get off the ferry and only a couple of hundred metres away you find this lovely hotel on the road which doesn't go anywhere else. Inside you'll find lovely old-school interior (it made me think of Babbity Bowster in Merchant City) and a very warm welcome. There's a big blackboard which has the food menu on it, assuring you that their food is fresh and local. They serve bottled beers from Fyne Ales and have a Fyne Ales beer on tap too - lovely stuff and not super expensive either. It's really doggie friendly too, with the owner coming out with her labrador to play with our Luna, then kindly opening the gate to the garden so they could play together safe from the road... not that many cars pass the place anyway! On a nice day you can see for miles down the Kyles of Bute in a wonderful setting.

This is more of a 3.5 star review-…read more As part of a birthday getaway, my guy and I stayed here overnight. We had a deal where we got a bottle of fizz and breakfast the next morning, which was really nice. The hotel itself is perched up on a hill, perfect for looking out over the water while enjoying said fizz on the deck around the hotel. The owner of the hotel is really nice and chatty and very helpful in answering any questions we may have had. Upon check in, the furniture looks a bit sad, so we weren't really sure what to expect. There is a bar there at check in, stocked with plenty of drinks (although the cider wasn't restocked and we only saw one, so we never bought any). We were given our key and away up two floors we went to our room "Frazier". The room, even though not water facing, was still bright and modern. The bed was very wee and not very comfortable, so we didn't have the best nights sleep, but otherwise, the room was fine for sleeping. The bathroom was large, but it was a bit random that the shower was right next to a window with no curtain or shades on it. I didn't bring any shampoos or soaps thinking maybe there would be enough to use while we were there, but was kind of disappointed that there was very little in the way of toiletries. There was a hairdryer, so that kind of made up for it. After we gave our room a once over, we headed back downstairs to get our bottle of fizz. The owner had it chilled and ready for us, which was nice. We were hoping to buy some snacks to go along, but they don't offer any crisps or nuts or anything. We sat out on the balcony attached to the hotel and enjoyed the afternoon with our fizz. We went out to explore the island shortly after and came back after dark. The owner was leaving with a younger boy (maybe her son) to take him home. We noticed loads of cars in the parking lot, but heard not a single peep from anyone who may have been in the hotel. Our room, even though a large gap under the door, was pretty soundproof. The next morning after our showers, we headed down to the dining room. We opened the door to a large lounge equipped with gorgeous furniture, a piano and various musical instruments. Completely made the check in area look even more worn out. I hadn't brought my phone with me, so I was unable to take pictures of the lounge or the dining area which was also very nice. Breakfast was croissants fresh out of the oven, toast and tea/coffee. There was also a small buffet of fresh fruits, cereals and yogurts. We were also able to order hot foods if we wished, but we were ok with the small breakfast we were offered. It was great and very tasty. Checkout was seamless and we headed out and on our way in no time. This hotel is quite far from the town centre, so next time we're on the island, we'd probably opt to stay closer to the centre, but for the price, this place is pretty ok. We wouldn't call it luxury as it states on their billboard but it was nice.

There are infact only 8 rooms and the owners have tried very hard to make sure your stay is comfortable. Our room was very nice, although a little smaller than imagined, but had a nice view over to the bay. The winning medal for the hotel goes to the restaurant however. The restaurant itself is traditional in decor, but very 'plush' and tidy. The food was beautiful - reasonable portions and very fresh. Between us, we had mushroom strogonoff, pate, fish chowder, sticky toffee pudding and creme brulee! A nice bottle of geverztraminer from the extensive wine list also. Breakfast was also supurb, with an extensive 'tradional' Scottish menu, of good quality. We paid £79pp DBB.

Unfortunately, that's as much as I can award the Glenburn during our stay as part of a Shearings Coach holiday, as everything else about the room and the restaurant was extremely lacklustre. The interior is in need of a make-over, as we noticed the carpeting all up the stairs was frayed and duct taped, and the rooms still sport analog televisions and stained "art" on the walls. Our holiday package gave us half-board, so breakfast and dinner included, but we had to abandon having dinner in the evenings by the second night as the food was terrible. I truly dislike being negative, but it was obviously being churned out for the masses with next to no care for the taste of the products. It was after a suspiciously pink slab of chicken breast (apparently roasted) accompanied by sad, grey, boiled vegetables, that we stopped eating for dinner. We kept on with breakfasts simply because we needed tea in the mornings, but my toast always arrived stone cold, and the waitresses were run off their feet so I didn't like to mention it, and just ate it every morning. That was the only redeeming thing about the dining room - our lovely waitress, who was ALWAYS polite and smiling. This is also particularly in contrast to the dining room manager(?), who on one occasion spoke to us extremely rudely after he had expected us to just KNOW how the hotel works in regards to the drinks menu, and how/what comes from the kitchen and what comes from the dining room. Reception staff were very lovely, too. The bay of Rothesay is beautiful and the hotel is set up on the hillside overlooking it spectacularly, but unfortunately, that is all that the Glenburn really has going for it.

We went down to speak to someone regarding this to be greeted from rude staff whom were dismissive and told to email the manager which I did who again just said she has passed it over to someone else this hotel isn't clean has rude staff we won't be coming back to this hotel my sister was spoken to like garbage. None of us got any sleep due to this and there is no one in the reception to ask to move room I would rate this hotel 0 stars if I could we also eat out of the restaurant and ended up with food poisoning due to this unclean hotel please read the honest reviews please before u book

I would rather stay in a Turkish Prison…read more This is the 5th time my wife and I have stayed at the Argyll hotel. We have seen it through changes of ownership and understand the economic challenges it, and the local area are facing. This experience was unforgiveable however and we will never return while it remains with the current owners. Hopefully they will go bust soon as they rightly deserve. The room was filthy. There is a chair with stains so bad, it gives me the fear. There are stains all over the walls and dirty, torn wallpaper. Cracked tiles with dirt in the bathroom and filth on almost every surface. The carpet is seriously old and smells fusty. I would doubt it has been deep cleaned in the last 3 years. There are many horrendous and filthy stains, as have all the other furnishings. After a struggle, one might get to the window in its cramped alcove only to find there is a view of the gutter. Feel free to review the attached photos if you think I am exaggerating. Bed had the most uncomfortable and clapped out old mattress I have ever encountered (outwith a council garbage dump) in a dirty, broken and neglected room. I hadn't the courage to remove the sheet and inspect it. I hoped it was nothing like the chair, which was the stuff of nightmares. The floorboards must be from a haunted house originally. The window handle was broken so that the window cannot be opened although this helps muffle the noise of screaming drunks at the kebab shops outside. I cannot stand up straight without my head being pushed down by the ceiling. I am just under 6 feet. The last time we stayed a year ago, we were given a reasonably clean and comfortable room with 4 poster bed and sea view for around £130 per night. Nothing particularly special but adequate. We even recommended that friends join us this year and so we booked 2 rooms this time. We were told at reception that the lift was slow but it worked. We then waited on the elevator for 10 minutes before a staff member turned up to tell us there were actually people trapped inside on the top floor (they had been trapped since before we checked in but nobody told reception). The lift was not fixed at any point during our stay despite being told it would be fixed that evening. 6 flights of stairs whenever we wanted to go back to the room. Incidentally, the stairs smell as old, dirty and stale as the room did. We booked a year in advance, on a previous stay. I cannot forgive the fact that the hotel knew my wife is disabled, and allocated us a room on the top floor. My wife was physically unable to cope with more than one journey in and out of the room each day. Breakfast was abysmal in almost every way including the service which was basically two bored teenagers running in and out of the kitchen to giggle or check their phones. As a party of four, they literally could not cope with a couple arriving slightly later and ordering from the same table as friends. It was like giving a sheep an I.Q. test. Food mostly inedible, especially the sausages. It doesn't matter how well you cook cheap and nasty food, that's all it can ever be Overall, the service in the hotel was really bad. One nice chap on check in, the rest generally rushed about stressed, glaring at you if you might smile or say hello. The man walking about pretending to be important was worst of all. Just came across as very obnoxious and officious and did nothing to help. I am told that there was a falling out with the very nice staff member who checked us in and out the previous year. She is sorely missed. I really haven't got anything good to tell you about this place other than well located. We had no alternative to this hotel as it was such a busy weekend for the town other than to go back to Glasgow. We are not considering a return and recommend you do not stay at this hotel under its current ownership. Ever. Stayed: August 2018, with friends. Cowal games weekend.
