In general this is a good practice, but don't believe the "same day" appointment feature with the MDVIP premium price tag. They do an annual comprehensive visit, but I found that the results weren't thoroughly reviewed. I get my care through a team of specialists in other practices, so not clear what Dr. Toupin's practice adds for the premium price tag. read more

Amela at this practice is absolutely amazing. I've been coming here for years and never had any issues. I recently got a letter in the mail stating he is downsizing his practice and will be charging an annual fee to see him. Also, when I called to get an update on Amela I was told that noone knows what she is going to do after maternity leave. Bottomline is, if you're ok with paying a yearly fee to see a doctor then you'll be fine here but I think it's really sad that they are possibly going to lose Amela. read more

I have never seen so many ads in a doctor's office for medications. This guy makes sure he gets his money. The person ahead of me in line was being told her treatments wouldn't be billed together and the total would come out higher. She literally responded "I'll do whatever it is you need to get paid". I got stuck in rush hour traffic and was 10 mins late, but they couldn't squeeze me in for a 5 mins appointment so I could get a referral...even though my appointment slot was 30 mins?! From the other reviews it sounds like this experience is par for the course. Terrible. read more

This review really isn't of Dr. Toupin so much as it is of his administrative staff when I called to schedule a new patient appointment. Here's how the conversation went... "Hello Dr. Toupin's offiice" "Yes, Hi. Is Dr. Toupin taking appointments for new patients?" "What insurance do you have?" ... While I am a realist and understand that those with the right insurance will get better care than those that don't it made me feel like nothing more than another "revenue stream" for Dr. Toupin. In other words, had I not had the "right" insurance Dr. Toupin wouldn't be seeing any new patients, but since I did he is seeing new patients. I guess that's the way it goes now-a-days, and I do understand the importance of Dr. Toupin to run a profitable business. I just wish the "profitable" part wasn't thrown in my face within the first 5 seconds of my experience with his office. I guess this "cash cow" will look for a better experience somewhere else. read more

A simple annual checkup consisting of a 10 minute visit of weight, vitals, and receiving a slip for bloodwork was billed to the insurance as a 45-minute in depth consultation for health issues and therefore not covered by insurance as it should have as an Annual (closer to a couple hundred dollars than just a simple copay that was due). Attempts to ask the billing manager, Keith, if it is possible someone made a mistake, caused him to start yelling that we were asking him to commit fraud and alter billing information. Why so defensive? It's so sad to realize that's probably because they know they are conning their patients and up-coding the billing for their own pockets. I hope this helps others avoid the same financial loss. read more

I have been taking my mom to Dr. Toupin for about 2 years. The care that he provides is very thorough. He listens to all my moms concerns and tries to understand how she's feeling. He take his time and explains in a way my mom would understand since English isn't her first language. My mom feels comfortable telling him all her problems. Today we went there to have a check up for my mom but asked if my dad could have her appointment since he was in severe pain. Even though my dad wasn't a member of MDVIP, he agreed to see my dad. He took care of my dad and checked everything that's wrong. He also took the time and asked how my mom was doing before he left. We knew it was the right decision to sign him up for MDVIP after that checkup. I feel so much relief knowing that there is a doctor that really takes care of his patients. I know that a lot of people complain the switch to MDVIP and just taking their money, but in my parents case it's worth it. His care before MDVIP was good, but now he can focus more on the patients. His staff is very helpful and friendly and we appreciate all that they do. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! Bad Customer Service, Not Willing to Honor their Living Social Deal. - for Laser Hair Removal I have never been so appalled at the administrative staff. Today I called and as soon as I said my name, and concern was told they couldn't hear me, and left me talking to myself... The reason I was calling was that I purchased a living social 'deal', and have scheduled several appointment, all to be followed up with a call a day or two before to tell me that for some reason they are unable to see my husband. At this point I am assuming they are not wanting to honor their deal, which is fine, but just tell me and give me my money back instead of giving me the run around. Dr Toupin might be a great doctor, but his office staff leaves a bit to be desired. I just left his office. I was seven minutes late for my 230 appointment to see Dr. Toupins physician assistant. Because I was a little late, the receptionist turned me away, even though there for a quick consult to get a prescription filled. The waiting room was empty. Has a doctor. ever kept you waiting longer than 25 minutes? I get tired of country club doctors. Have been a patient of Dr. Toupin for many years. However, he is now pushing some subscription service at $1600/year and kicking all his patients that will not pay it out. I have already stated several times that I will not participate yet they still keep harassing me. I have filed a complaint with the FTC because I am on the do not call list. My personal information should be confidential and not provided to any outside third parties unless I specify but this MDVP thing keeps sending me marketing propaganda. It is sad that a doctor decided to abandon his loyal patients in search of profits.....what a shame. read more

I called to see if the Dr. is accepting new patients. He is, but he's going to change his practice. They will be charging their patients $1,600 a year. This is not including your insurance deductible or anything insurance doesn't cover. I'll have to pass. This would mean I would have to be almost out of 5K per year out of pocket including deductible. I can't afford to see him. :( read more

Not really impressed. I was referred to Dr. Toupin for possible sleep apnea and I had to call 3 different times to obtain results which they said was clear. I am having a hard time believing that considering I often dose off while driving, which is the reason I am trying to see a sleep doctor. One of the times I called and asked if someone else was able to share the results of the test with me they said no, that Dr. Toupin had to relay those results. Then, when I called back for the 3rd time; I talked to his nurse who provided me the results. I was a bit confused since there was no body else other than Dr. Toupin who could review the results with me. I feel sorry for his regular patients, now he is starting to charge an annual fee to be under his care. It sounds to me like he is more interested in the money than the "care". Go somewhere else, that is my recommendation. read more

I've been rescheduled numerous times with this office for laser hair removal apparently they only have one assistant that does it and seems to be gone a lot or extremely busy! I was only 5 min late and the receptionist was extremely rude and said the next client was here so she was going to do her instead and that I would have to reschedule. Seriously?!?! 5 min late and I explained that all my treatments have lasted at least an hour and she said no that's wrong they only last 15 minutes and I was appalled because last time it took longer than an hour. Once my treatment is done I am not returning or referring anyone there! This office needs better customer service skills. Being a nurse and manager for an office, I never treat patients like this nor my staff because if they did, they would be long gone. read more

I was given Dr. Toupin's name as a referral from a friend who is in the medical field. I wonder if the doc is fully aware of call-in procedure. Well I have no idea why people are reviewing him for laser hair removal because they don't do that here. My mom (who is on Medicare) has been going to him for years and loves him! I've been in several appointments with her and found him to be knowledgeable, caring, funny and empathetic so I recently made him my primary as well as my son's. I was referred to Dr. T a year ago. What a difference to have a Dr. come in, sit down and LISTEN, give reasonable suggestions, offer advice on everything from better habits to how to get prescriptions more reasonably priced. When I could not get in to see my dermatologist for a Rx refill he made a suggestion of a similar drug to one I have been taking that was cheaper and every bit as effective. While I truly liked Dr. Toupin, I have two issues with his practice. 1. Do not, I repeat DO NOT see his PA. She tried to prescribe me antibiotics while I was in the middle of a Lupus flare. I had to TELL her to check my sed rates because she couldn't figure out why I was having 105 degree temps every night. I felt like I knew more than her about what was going on with me. 2. If you need lab work or x-rays, they send you offsite which results in extra out of pocket because your co-pay generally only covers labs and x-rays taken onsite. So, I am another quest to find a doctor that can be my new BFF. read more

I have been visiting Dr. Toupin for about 10 years, about 3 to 4 times a year, for my elevated blood sugar levels and cholesterol. I found him to be sharp, knowledgeable, and friendly. He analyzes treatment history well and provides alternatives that are practical to implement. My health has improved significantly ever since I started taking his suggestions seriously! His staff are very friendly and easy to work with (Julie, Keith, Crystal,...). His office is well maintained and there is plenty of parking very close to the building. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Toupin's for nearly a decade and was heartbroken when he would no longer be practicing near my home any longer. I found him to be an excellent diagnostician, excellent listener and always seemed to have time to listen to my latest health difficulty. He keeps up to date on new procedures and medications. I've never waited more than 1/2 hour to be seen by Dr. Toupin with the exception of him being called out to an emergency. If I lived within an hour's drive to his office, I would be thrilled to return as a patient of Dr Toupin. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Toupin for several years and just this week I had a complete physical by him. I want to state that never has a doctor taken the amount of time to talk to me during a physical. He listen to me about my worries and my thoughts. He set forth a proper regiment that I would need to be on in order to maintain a healthy life. the lab results from my blood work were received in a very prompt matter. Dr. Toupin has answered every message that I have ever sent to him through the portal that they use and in a very timely matter. I am not saying that I have always seen eye to eye with him just recently I had a very serious issue come up and he responded promptly and reassured me that there was nothing to worry about. I've been seeing Dr. Toupin for about 10 years and so has my elderly mother, who has dementia. My sister, her step-daughter and her family also see Dr. Toupin. We all love him. You sometimes have to wait for your appointment but that's because he really listens to what you have to say and he never rushes you out the door. He's warm and friendly and has a great sense of humor. I don't know all his support staff by name but I know his nurse Angie. She has worked for him for a long time and she's fantastic. I am new to Austin and needed a primary care doctor. I based my decision to see Dr. Toupin on a referral from my cardiologist, in spite of the negative reviews in Yelp. I'm glad that I did as he immediately understood my medical issues. I was particularly impressed that he diagnosed a chronic issue that I have shared with my previous primaries, none of whom could tell me what was going on. I was also impressed that he made notes regarding my issues which he then handed to me as I was leaving so that I would have a copy of your discussion. If you are looking for a professional doctor who is respectful and empathetic, Dr. Toupin is the last person you should consider. I found him to be extremely condescending and pretentious. His staff was equally as disinterested. During our visit, he preferred to do all of the talking and very little listening. He has so much patience, gives me ample time to explain, and listens inventively to what I am saying or asking, he examines, and researches, he is truly knowledgeable about all aspects of medicine. He really blows hot and cold. My wife started going to him in 2005 based on a recommendation from a friend. On our first visit we were very impressed. He wasn't afraid to review web resources to double check on something. Then as time went on and my wife's recurring condition worsened, he got to be very short and irritable with us. His office staff got very rude. He put her on a huge overdose of steroids (according to other doctors it was several times the advisable amount) which did not address her back issues and caused her to gain weight. It got to the point where we literally couldn't ask him a question in an office visit because he wouldn't let us get a word in edge-wise. And his office manager was a complete jerk at that point. My friend that recommended him left him and we did too. If you're eating up too much of his valuable time and not allowing him to maximize his profits then he doesn't want you to be his patient anyway. read more

I agree with a previous review as this one is not about Dr. Toupin as much as it is for most of his admin. staff, ESPECIALLY HIS PA LISA. We have seen him since 2005 and Dr. Toupin is a great doctor who listens and talks to you about your condition and probable ways of action. But his PA is useless as she does not even seem to care about the patients, and usually she is the one you'll end up seeing. I had to see her a year ago and she did not even care to get close to me and see an area I had somewhat infected, but she limited to sit on the other corner or the room and give me three different prescriptions for three different antibiotics. I ended up going to see another doctor that same day, who ran tests and found out it was a viral infection, so the antibiotics were totally useless. My husband saw her a few days ago, she totally contradicted herself as she seemed more interested in "selling" you tests or injections they have available that might not be necessary to you at all, than on finding what is really going on with you and give the appropriate treatment. She ended up diagnosing what he does not have, and ended up giving him some EXPIRED samples of eye drops, and not even the prescription to get them. What kind of health practitioner is that? The rest of his staff..my husband has been calling asking for his test results done back in October, and nothing, and communicating to the doctor directly seems like an impossible mission. We do like him a lot as a professional, maybe he does not even know what is going on with most of his staff, but at this point we are even considering finding a different family doctor for ourselves and to recommend. read more
