Camaraderie. That's what Tough Mudder is all about. How do you get through it? -Pick a good team. I'm not referring to picking only the strongest or fastest. Pick friends that are dedicated, loyal, and are ready to get down and dirty. That's the team I chose- eleven pretty tough "Mudder-Effers"! http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=ys-D1CD_jtsP2gguCRc7Vg&userid=Rp8hHh-2U8Nh-7FhhspVxQ -Register early. Space fills up fast and fees add up, not to mention they enforce a mandatory $15 insurance fee. -Train hard. Begin training at least 3 months in advance. *Follow the recommended circuit at least 3x's a week. http://toughmudder.com/training-prep/ *Incorporate uphill running into your workout. (Tough Mudder is roughly 10-12miles, broken up between obstacles.) *Practice swimming *Most important, train with your group -Obstacles The obstacles vary from event to event. However, it still focuses on challenging the core strength you've built through completing their recommended circuit. My fave/most challenging obstacles were the Monkey Bars (http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=rkfub8oz7bKjWLa71uxxNw&userid=Rp8hHh-2U8Nh-7FhhspVxQ), Chernobyl (http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=arZgFQfteDA5zt-F5o9g3A&userid=Rp8hHh-2U8Nh-7FhhspVxQ), Walk the Plank (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/_ZS-O88Vf4L_wlPTeI8Qhw?select=6OGFhdYRn4RZhbf1FDPGpA), and Electroshock Therapy (http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=BaRGl13d7CYBOhmWkRhYKA&userid=Rp8hHh-2U8Nh-7FhhspVxQ). -Game Day As with any other event (i.e. marathon, triathlon, warrior dash, etc), plan accordingly. Get plenty of rest, eat a good carb-based dinner the night before, stay hydrated, and give yourself about an hour before your start time to park, (yellow school) bus it over, register, and get marked up with your team. Game day attire depends entirely on you, but dry-fit clothes (i.e. Under Armour, Nike) and good trail shoes work magic. Prepare to get marked up on your forehead and legs or arms. This will help identify you in their pictures. Try & pick team colors and/or a team outfit. http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=VDijbKx6IlSEmx5d45uEtg&userid=Rp8hHh-2U8Nh-7FhhspVxQ -Have fun with it!!! The pre-motivation speech is classically memorable. By the end you are absolutely amped like no other and they have you chanting "Tough! Mudder! Wounded! Warrior!" repeatedly. No need to worry if you can or can't do it because you can! You can do even better if you've trained hard for it. Even the hardest obstacles are a basis of mind over matter. Besides, your team will kick your ass if you don't! Bottom line: What's a little mud, ice, freezing lake water, smoke in your face, uphill terrain in the sun, and electro shock therapy got on you?? Absolutely NOTHING!!!! Are you TOUGH MUDDER material or not?? http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=zt0nJHiCODK5hOzznyvHUQ&userid=Rp8hHh-2U8Nh-7FhhspVxQ

In my life, I've had the opportunity to run 5 & 10 k's, half marathons, marathons, and mud runs. The Tough Mudder combined all of those into one to create the most memorable team event I have ever participated in. Our team was called the Bucket List Crew and we arrived at Vail Lake in Temecula on a cold Saturday morning. We all carpooled together so we wouldn't have to pay for parking. We saved $10, more money for buying Tough Mudder gear. The parking lot was organized and they had staff getting people in. Good job with the parking. Next was the mile walk to base camp. Yeah, a mile walk to get to the event. This was a warm up and we needed this. Did I mention it was about 35 degrees that morning, burrrrr. Once we arrived to base camp, we made our way towards the check-in area. Check-in was organized by your last name and staff did a great job of getting your death waiver, checking id, and putting your race number on your body and forehead. We checked in our clothes into the bag area and made our way towards the start. The most emotional part of the race, for me, took place at the start line. The MC was amazing and he really knows how to get people into the event and he reminds us why we are all doing the Tough Mudder, the Wounded Warriors. Obstacles for this Tough Mudder included Kiss of Mud, Berlin Walls #1, WWP Carry, Artic Enema, Funkey Monkey, Mud Mile, Underwater Tunnels, Just the Tip, Hold your Wood, Trench Warfare, Kiss of Mud #2, Berlin Walls #2, Twinkle Toes, Cliffhanger, Balls to the Wall, Dark Lighting, Boa Constrictor, Walk the Plank, Electric Eel, Everest, and Electroshock Therapy. After the pain, scratches, bruises, electroshock, leg cramps, and blood we received our orange head bands and T-shirt. Our free beer was a Dos Equis but I lost a quarter of it while walking afterwards because my hand was shaking so much. We made our way towards the rinsing and changing area to dry off. The merchandise tent had plenty of hats, t-shirts, and mugs for your Tough Mudder needs. We took our mile walk back to the car and enjoyed watching other people participating. I was able to cross off one item on my bucket list and this was the toughest one. If you have not done a Tough Mudder I highly recommend it. Find a good team, get in shape, and get ready to get your body rocked.

First off, what's up with the address? I tried updating it but no joy, hopefully someone with some brains can hook it up. Anyways let me quote one of my heros, Derek Zoolander. "I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is." This past weekend my team, Blue Steel, and I discovered it! Three hours of mud, dust, hills, cramps, jumps, lake, crawls, ICE WATER, etc... makes beer taste so much better with your team and fellow mudders. I admit that it was a little easier than I expected but as I reflect now, it was the phsyical preperation, "I don't give a fuck" attitude, and my teammates that really proved to be the recipe for success. I must've watched hours upon hours of Tough Mudder videos to pscyhe me out before a workout and even after that I still had the hunger to go harder the next day. But Tough Mudder does a good job on making you guess what's next. You can study the course map for your event for days but they'll switch it up, just go for it and don't stop til you get your orange headband. I've never been more proud to wear a piece of simple clothing in my life until I earned that headband. Too bad my friends didn't apprecieate me wearing it to the wine bar aftwerwards. For those of you who are doing a Tough Mudder, a bit of advice. 1. Arrive early and make sure your vehicle is fueled up because traffic is a beast both to and from the event. 2. Run plenty of hills! Leave the flat shit for a marathon, you're doing Tough Mudder! 3. They had bananas at almost every other water station but bring an energy gel in your ZIPPERED pocket. You will lose it if it ain't secure! 4. I really benefited from the WOD and infro from Pete Isip on http://www.howtotrainfortoughmudder.com/ 5. Check the weather during your heat time to decide what to wear. To all my Tough Mudder brothers and sisters...HOO-YAH! Wear that headband with pride!

The guys at the front are super chill and the place looks like somebody's messy garage where all your complex emotions can just be purged out of your body and just stay there, and I'm really here for it. We were given safety hazmat style suits and helmets with a protective mesh and ear coverings which were really useful because things do tend to fly off the walls when they're being smashed and that's on my girl ~* PhYsiCs *~.... The staff was super accommodating and gave us multiple small and big items to smash in to pieces. The landline telephones were my favorite because they are rock solid and it's SO satisfying when they finally break. The whole experience was delightful. I think we may even have stayed way over our allotted time but nobody really seemed to care, as I said this place is just super chill and the type of environment you need to unleash all your pent up anger at the world. They even have speakers that you can pair your phone with as you smash things. 10/10 highly recommend this place and I will be back again when the itch to throw hands and fight the world comes back to me!!

We were simply told that we could not throw the larger items, only the cups, and then left to figure everything else out on our own. To make matters worse, we paid extra for the "360 video experience," only to find out it was nothing more than our own phone being placed on their device -- something that was never properly explained beforehand. Charging customers extra for that is extremely misleading. What was most frustrating was the complete lack of care and professionalism from the two staff members working. After sitting around for an extended period with no communication, we literally had to go out and ask whether our session was even over. That level of disinterest and poor customer service was obvious the entire time. My family and I came here to celebrate a birthday, and instead we left frustrated and disappointed. Spending nearly $300 for this level of service was a complete waste of money. I would absolutely not recommend this place to anyone.

Shah was the main instructor who led the class - he was great - made everyone comfortable and explained things in ways we could all understand. The other 2 employees were super helpful and they all pitched in to make class run smoothly. The first two hours of the class we learned how to make the dough - each pair made enough dough for 4 pies. We also learned how to make a simple pizza sauce, tasted different types of cheese, and sampled a few pies we watched him make as he demonstrated the techniques. The second half of class we made our own pies. They had so many different toppings to choose from, and you could even make dessert pies! It was a lot of fun coming up with our own flavor combinations. Shaping the dough was a lot easier than expected after learning the techniques. We got full quickly so they had boxes to take home leftovers. We had a lot of fun! The 4 hours went by quicker than expected. They have alcohol and wine for purchase and free ice water. Tip: Make sure to eat something for breakfast since you don't actually start eating anything until more than halfway through the class. Definitely give this place a shot! Fun idea for birthday parties or other special occasions.

We booked a premium, full-service package for a team-building afternoon, but instead of relaxing, my team spent the entire time stressing, moving boxes, and cleaning up after the staff we hired. We aren't trying to be difficult clients; we simply wanted the service we paid for. Instead, we faced a massive burden: The setup was chaotic and late: For a group our size, the policy is a 40-80 minute setup window. The facilitator didn't show up until 1:33 PM for a 2:00 PM start. Her assistant didn't arrive until after the event started. We were left watching the clock, wondering if our event was even going to happen. We had to manage their logistics: The assistant arrived late and without ID. Since we are in a secure office building, she couldn't get in. Instead of the vendor handling this, my team had to stop what they were doing, leave the event space, and go down to the lobby to retrieve her and haul up the supplies she was carrying. Dismissive attitude: Mistakes happen, but the facilitator's attitude made it worse. She was dismissive about being late and shockingly unhelpful regarding her own assistant's supplies. At one point, when asked about the materials her assistant brought, she refused to help, telling us she "couldn't hang onto that." It felt like we were imposing on her, rather than the other way around. My team did the physical labor: Because they were so behind, the setup wasn't done until 2:30 PM--30 minutes into our paid time. To save the event, my colleagues and I had to step in and physically unpack boxes, set up stations, and distribute materials. We paid for a full-service event but ended up doing the heavy lifting ourselves. Contract issues: We paid extra for the "all new supplies" option so our team could keep their materials. Despite this, the facilitator packed up and took many of the paints and brushes back with her. They walked out on the mess: Despite the event starting late due to their tardiness, the facilitator refused to stay a minute past 4:00 PM. She started aggressively cleaning up while people were still painting, then bolted out the door right at 4:00, leaving us to finish the cleanup and break down the boxes. I cannot recommend this vendor. We paid for a fun, stress-free afternoon and instead received a chaotic experience where we had to work as the setup and cleanup crew.

Those who like cooking will be thrilled with a night at Susi's home, but others who are happier socializing and eating (like myself) will be just as satisfied. As soon as we arrived Susi handed each of us a personalized apron (probably the only thing that I'll ever see Chef Andrea on), told us to tie our hair back (I appreciate a hairless kitchen) and directed us towards delish apps and wine. But the night got even better... We were split into groups and I was placed into the capable hands of Chef Charmaine. My group was in charge of the upside down strawberry cake. Yum- I hope there'd be batter testing involved!! Charmaine gave each of us a job (mine was to crack eggs). We chatted and drank wine while we baked so it was actually fun. I may have given her a slight heart attack when I dumped the vinegar into the batter way earlier than necessary, but for the most part Charmaine made sure the others would be able to enjoy our cake. By the time I was over cracking eggs, stirring batter (and yes, even taste testing) it was time to sit down for a 5 star meal of gazpacho, flatbread, salmon, quinoa and the cake. I wasn't a huge fan of the salmon, but it was probably just me because it quickly disappeared from everyone else's plates. Everything else was absolutely incredible. While one group was cooking in the kitchen along side professional chefs the other group was being entertained in the dining area with some kitchen/cooking trivia which was loads of fun. The dining area is relatively small so I'm not certain what the capacity limit is for an event hosted by this company but my guess would be a cooking event by this company is probably limited to a group of about 50 at a time. Larger companies probably would have to break into two separate time slots (but of course only they can answer that question). The kitchen was very clean and we used quality pots, bowls and culinary products and it was apparent when you held the stuff. It truly was an amazing experience and the staff was patient and absolutely great. Heck we were even a tough crowd getting carried away during the entertainment portion. The staff probably wanted to hit us over the head with a couple frying pans but they were great sports! My only complaint from the event was that my company was cheap and didn't order beef, they opted instead for veggie options (Yuk!) but the food quality was great.

I admit I made his job more difficult than necessary due to the multiple changes I needed to make. Josh was courteous and helpful and, in no way, did he give me impression of being bothered. Andrea was the tour guide for myself and two friends. Our tour group was small which I felt was a stroke of luck. Andrea sent an email to each of us the day before our tour which reminded us of the tour, our meeting spot and time. She also noted that the tour would begin promptly at the scheduled time. She also asked if we had any dietary restrictions, food allergies or questions. I replied to her email asking for suggestions for places to visit after our tour had concluded. She responded promptly and gave us some helpful suggestions. Andrea cheerfully met us at the predetermined time. After introductions, Andrea gave us a brief overview of what we were to see, answered our questions and confirmed that there were no food allergies she needed to be aware of. We stopped at Faicco's Italian Specialties where we sampled soppressata and rice balls, a.k.a. Arancini in front of Faicco's. Both were excellent. As we snacked, Andrea gave us a history of the place. Our next stop was Bleeker Street Pizza. Andrea gave us a brief history before going in. We ate slices of of Nona Maria pizza. Then the previous owner, Greg Greenwood, joined us. He gave us a detailed history of the restaurant, which his brother, Captain Douglas Greenwood, opened in 2004. Captain Greenwood tragically passed away from 9/11 illness and ownership passed to Greg, who recently sold the pizzeria, although he still works there on Fridays. The pizza was fantastic! I will definitely visit again. As we walked through the West Village, Andrea gave us more history of the neighborhood, which included a home that was only 9 feet wide and a former speakeasy!! Our third stop was Hudson Bagels. where we shared two delicious, traditional New York bagels with cream cheese. Our fourth stop was Galanga, a Thai restaurant. We each had a corn fritter and Chicken Satay. I loved the fritters but thought the chicken was a bit plain. The fifth restaurant was Mamoun's Falafel. My boring palate did not enjoy this treat, but the others did. Lastly we had a cupcake at Molly's Cupcakes, opened by a former school teacher and schoolhouse themed. We each ordered different cupcakes, all of which were yummy. We ended the tour at our original meeting place. Andrea was wonderful, personable and informative. The food is the best off the best and they give you too much! ;) I would definitely do another tour with these guys and whether it's your first trip or you were born here - this is a must!!!

Tried out the San Francisco Mission food tour with two of my colleagues on a Saturday morning…read more There were also five other people on the tour along with our guide. We ended up eating at five locations with a break in between. The meeting point - Mission Playground: felt kind of in the middle of nowhere since we weren't actually informed of the places we were eating at beforehand. Still fairly convenient as it was about four blocks from the nearest BART station. Our guide briefed us about a little history of the Mission and encouraged us to take photos of the tour; the best photographer would get a sixth bonus tasting. Stop 1 - Craftsman and Wolves: a very busy place so there was no seating for our group, but we ended up at one of those nearby hipster parklets. We were each given a Rebel Within: a savory muffin with a soft boiled egg inside and Tabasco salt on the side. Very tasty and hearty enough to almost fill up some people. Stop 2 - Ali Baba's Cave: it was a fairly hot and sunny day, but before going inside the restaurant we got a lecture about the history of falafel while standing in the heat; very informative, but it could have waited until the group was seated. I've been to Ali Baba's before and knew the food was good, but had never tried the falafel sandwich. We ended up getting three of them, which we split into thirds. The sandwich as a whole was very fresh and savory, but the sauces and eggplant ended up masking much of the falafel's flavor. What really made this stop nice was lots of seating, allowing the group to introduce each other and get to know each other. Stop 3 - Taqueria Cancun: also a fairly packed place, but we were able to bus two tables as a few other groups left. We had a selection of three tacos: beef tongue, al pastor, or super veggie. It was also the only stop where you could buy beer separately from the tour's initial price. I picked a beef taco and declined drinking. Relatively mild and satisfactory taco, which actually worked well as a palette cleanser after the very robust falafel. Like the previous stop, this place stood out as it allowed the group to relax and chat while enjoying some good food. Break - The Women's Building: we got a bit of history of the building itself and what it was previously used for. The mural on the side of the building was quite exquisite, though trying to view it from top to bottom meant staring directly into the hot sun. There was also an implication that we'd actually see the interior of the building, but we headed off to more stops. Stop 4 - Pizzeria Delfina: another busy place too crowded for our group, so we waited on the sidewalk. We shared a fresh Margherita pizza. The cheese was amazing and we learned that it was made that day over in Berkeley. The staff at Delfina was giving us some strange looks as we hung out on the curb and discussed their cuisine. Stop 5 - Tartine: one of the most infamous bakeries in San Francisco, which meant there was a long line out the door. We once again waited out on the curb. We ended up trying the salted chocolate rye cookie, which was more or less a high quality brownie. A good way to wrap up the meal. We compared photos we had taken and the guide picked a winner who got free Bi-Rite ice cream around the corner. Overall a good tour with great people. I'd prefer in the future they choose more welcoming places like Ali Baba and Cancun over cramped shops with high quality food. Still, I'd highly recommend trying the tour with a few people you already know well.

They say, time flies when you're having fun!…read more I am a born and raised San Francisco Chinese American. I joined the tour on a Saturday afternoon with non native SF friends. This tour exceeded my expectations. It was so fun to see the staples from my childhood - my memories exploded! Elaine was our fun tour guide. She knew her history and brought us to many different alleyways and eateries. SF Chinatown is known for alleys, she'll explain. =D All eateries were different and distinguished from their own regions. My favorite stops - fortune cookie shop and Tin How Temple. What a fun experience and can't wait to recommend this tour to other visitors. Don't forget to bring cash for some fun shopping!
