Used to be a member here but eventually switched out. For some reason I could never get over the multiple floors of bouldering, which makes it difficult to meander around and try different problems. Very fun spot with great staff. There is a good variety of things to do such as bouldering (with easy to difficult levels), a gym, sauna, and belaying (with various levels too). It is incredibly sad to see what has become of this gym since Movement acquired The Cliffs. It used to be such a vibrant, dynamic, and inclusive climbing community. The staff were friendly, dedicated, and always around to ensure participant safety. It is such a mess now. The problems are rarely changed, there is constant turnover with staff (most of whom are super young and rarely get up and do safety checks or monitor the absurd number of children in the gym), it is overrun with children at all hours of the day, the child to adult ratio is usually about 30:1. You also cannot get anyone from Movement to respond to customer inquiries or request. I've been emailing for weeks now trying to cancel my membership and no one will respond. I'm going to have to file a complaint with the NYAG's office because Movement is refusing to acknowledge my emails and cancel my membership. I'm going to try some of the other climbing gyms in the area, but it is such a shame to see what Movement has done to this gym. I'd encourage you to check out other gyms and if you are a parent, I strongly encourage you to not leave your child unsupervised with the staff at this gym. read more

Hard to get there by car cus traffic during peak hours is horrendous. Parking is very hard to find. To add more oil to the fire, the roads to get there are horrendously in bad conditions: lots of pot holes, uneven pavement, etc... In spite of all the nightmares, it is worth coming to this well equipped climbing gym. It has two floors for bouldering: reception and second floor. And the third floor is for rope climbing consisting of top roping, and lead climbing. I didn't get to see much of auto belay devices, but that is ok for me because I am past that stage. Third floor has a wall for speed climbing, but not full but half length. Kinda pointless imo I came here for lead climbing and the route setting problems were different than cliffs lic. They were more spacious, reachy, dynamic, a bit more traverse, and the holds were brand new. They gave sandpaper feeling, only for the first couple of weeks. I believe once past months, these holds would become greasy, slippery, etc. So better enjoy them the most possible when they brand new than later regret not having the opportunity ; ) The training facilities are superb. More spacious and with more equipment than its cliffs lic sibling. Its got three boards: kittle board, tension board, and some other board. These are perfect in building power, confidence, and committing moves. Perfect! Anyhow, this gym is perfect choice compared to what is available couple of blocks away: bkb gowanus. They should scream: "In Your Face!" LMAO Gotta say, this is an awesome gym in Downtown Brooklyn! read more

This facility is so large & inviting for climbers of all skill levels. I'm still new to climbing and got a membership here since it's not too far from me. I went on a Monday night around 7pm and was able to find parking easily. There was a good amount of people there but not so bad that I had to wait for a chance to climb. The staff here are all super friendly & informative. They have 2 floors for bouldering. Another floor for belaying, a small area with gym equipment, an outdoor roof terrace with seating and a sick view, a huge locker room, and a small shop in the front. As a beginner, there were plenty of options for me to try without struggling too much. Highly recommend! read more

Oh boy! I love it when things are shiny and new. Enjoy while it lasts Anyways... this building is much bigger than you can imagine. It looks slim on the outside so I thought it would be smaller than Cliffs LIC. But from my estimations, there's definitely more bouldering and top roping than the former. PLUS!!! It has a speed wall. Now what other NYC joint can say that? Anywho... absolutely love the place and I hope the vibe of the community stays as chill as the one at LIC. That is... friendly dogs and friendly owners. The staff are friendly, and the facilities are amazing. Other climbers are very nice as well. Some of them gave me tips on certain routes as well as cheered new climbers on. The bathrooms and locker room are clean, and there are water fountains on every floor. Although it's one of the bigger climbing gyms in NYC, it's smaller than the ones I'm used to. The bouldering routes could be more strategically placed as there are a lot of holds of one route right on top of or below another. It's also a bit difficult to climb down without having to fall from a higher point. There are ample amounts of gym equipment as well as training walls. They have a myriad of different classes that are free or discounted to members to take advantage of. read more

His approach is both inspiring and deeply engaging, making each session feel like a perfect blend of movement, mindfulness, and relaxation. This place is the Disneyland of climbing gyms. Each floor of this new dog-friendly facility is jaw dropping. Two full floors of bouldering, one full floor of top roping, a mega locker room with showers, towels, and sauna, a store with a great variety of climbing gear, an indoor bike room, a separate top roping room for classes and private events, an outdoor space on the top floor to just hang, weight lifting and cardio equipment, a yoga studio, a treadwall for continuous climbing, fingerboard exercise area, and light up wall for mix-and-match bouldering climbs. This place is absolutely incredible! For a $32 day pass (which other less new and decked out climbing gyms - *ahem* BKB - also charge), this place is well worth it and I highly recommend checking it out. read more

The Cliffs at Gowanus is a state of the art facility. There are two Boldering floors and on level 4 there are auto belay and all the walls you can imagine. Very clean facility and the gym is awesome. It was definitely worth the time in buying a day pass. My only downside to the Cliffs as a whole is that they don't offer any discounts or functions that include Military members. I have been to the other Cliffs facilities and I see that it is an inclusive community offering adaptive climbing as well as Queer climbing nights. And when I ask why aren't there any discounts for Military members the answer that is consistent is that we just don't do that only for college students. My opinion is that there are members of the Military that would benefit from being part of the climbing community and offering a discount as well as an opportunity to meet other climbers would be a benefit. It would be nice if that changed. I am combat veteran and I know it has helped me why not offer it to others? read more

The Cliffs is my new favorite place because it's very fun, the staff is nothing short of lovable, and management thought of everything. I stumbled onto The Cliffs on an afternoon walk, and decided to check it out because why not. The guy that walked me through the gym had such a knowledgeable and playful vibe. He explained the sport and gym in a way that made it sound accessible and fun. Their learn to climb intro package (highly recommended) completely erases the barrier to entry for a lot of reasons. First, it includes all of your equipment rentals (shoes, harness chalk), so there's no need to invest in gear to lean in and try it out. Second it includes two small group workshops both of which were EXTREMELY helpful. One was a belay certification course so you're able to use the two story top rope routes safely, confidently and with the new friends in your class. The other was a techniques class where they teach you how to fall and give TONS of individual attention on different bouldering routes. In addition to three separate floors of climbing, there is a traditional gym area with cardio machines, kettlebells, squat racks, and lots of functional movement toys. A huge locker room with a sauna. A roof deck with hammocks. Co-work space! All studio classes are included with any membership. The only one I've been able to make was "mobility for climbers". It was a game changer as it unlocked in one hour what 10 years of yoga couldn't do for my hips. Wow. The more I use the gym and the more little nooks and crannies I discover, the more I appreciate the thought put into designing this space and user experience. Beginner routes are mixed in with more advanced routes which mixes different levels of climbers with each other. This both helps and inspires. There are a multitude of routes for any level. I am a brand new fresh beginner and have been working on about 6 separate routes (problems) and I've only stuck to one area of one floor to give you an idea how many options there are. The handful I'm on all challenge different skills. Whoever designs these routes is smarter than whoever writes The NY Times Sunday crossword. If you're even the slightest bit curious, go for it. It checks a lot of unexpected boxes and the staff (every single person) is completely refreshingly friendly. Oh! Dogs are allowed. read more

Great walls, setting, staff and shop. Horrible air conditioning system. It's almost always humid and warm inside. If you get to the gym early, you cannot even pull the ropes through the toprope anchors because they are so saturated with moisture. I gave it a pass last summer because it was still new and they claimed that they were getting their system "dialed in"...but by now, and with the mugginess that the city has been having, there really isn't an excuse to be drenched in sweat climbing indoors. Memberships aren't cheap - please lower the thermostat and start up the AC an hour before you open in the mornings. read more

Have brought my 7 yo here a couple times, and had a lot of fun. Staff is super friendly and helpful. We usually split our time between auto belay routes and bouldering. The auto belay has worked well for him. He has a great time bouldering, too--there's less if any waiting for those routes because there are so many. I don't let him climb all the way to the top of a few of them as some go pretty high for a kid. The place feels very clean. We both love going here. read more

We had my son's birthday party here. It was terrific. Large party room where the kids could run around and also eat and celebrate. We had a good amount of time for climbing. overall is a great rock climbing place the bouldering is pretty nice with many options for beginners to extreme experts and I was a beginner and they also have regular rock climbing which goes really high and is very fun I also like how they sell some snacks at the front entrance and they have lockers and showers. read more

The Cliffs at Gowanus is a stunning facility that blows every climbing gym I've been to out of the water. I came to climb here twice on my recent visit to BK and I really can't wait to come back. The Cliffs is a three story facility. The first two floors are bouldering and the top floor is top-roping and lead climbing, and there's also a small speed climbing wall. There's also a really nice gym facility with a yoga studio and a sauna. The treadmills are particularly nice - they're the zero gravity type ones which are always fun to run on. They are open late, even on the weekends, which is a huge plus! We came Sunday evening and the gym was mostly empty, and then returned on Monday evening (around 7pm) where it was a little busy, but the top floor is big enough to accommodate everybody with little to no waiting. The setup is similar to Earth Treks/Movement/Planet Granite where grigis are loaded and provided for you at each route which is really nice from a safety perspective. The gym is well-staffed with people on every floor monitoring and they're there to help with any questions too. Everybody was really friendly. I'm getting back into climbing and what I appreciate is that there were multiple beginner routes for me to try - other gyms I've gone to have very few beginner routes. Doing laps on the same stuff can be a little boring! The Cliffs keeps it interesting for this newbie and I still haven't tried all of the beginner routes which is exciting! Since The Cliffs literally just opened, the holds are a little sandpapery which is kind of nice! This also means the rental shoes aren't super stinky yet (forgot to bring my own gear!) The facility is really clean too. You can even bring your dog to chill here! They have little hooks you can clip a leash to. My only pet peeve that I recognize is personal and not worth deducting a star for is the rental harnesses. I wasn't expecting to climb on this trip, so I left my own gear at home. The rental harnesses here are a cheaper kind, very uncomfortable, with a single tie in point. What freaked me out is upon doing my safety checks prior to climbing, the double back was completely undone - this is why we safety check, but I worry about total newbies. Definitely prefer the factory double-backed harnesses myself. Definitely recommend checking this place out, and I'm considering a 10-visit pass myself for future visits! I visited the cliff at Gowanus for there grand opening in bulter street I work for a non for profit that service's people with special needs The Gm Harrington was a total Insensitive ,unprofessional and just out of touch with reality. Per the event it was free and open to everyone!!!
