This sushi place has been on my to try list for quite some time. I came here with a friend for dinner and was wowed with the happy hour specials. Each day has different specials but some days have $3 cocktails to $4 draft beers. When the food got there we were so hungry, I didn't get to take any picture but the sushi was delicious.

The Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen is so good! I loved the char on the chonkatsu, and the broth with the chili oil is perfection. I ordered with extra chonkatsu and extra egg. The Sonomono salad with shrimp was refreshing-very good! Just stopping by to give my review while ordering more ramen.

I think they are gearing up for a remodel or what, but if you are looking for ambience.well.... However The food was amazing!!! Everything was well prepared and super fresh. The server was nice and friendly. Attentive but not intrusive. I took her recommendation for the 183, and the tempura cheesecake, and was not disappointed. For the price I think it's an incredible value.

The first time trying this place out and we were welcomed to n with a friendly smile. They have an extensive menu but I was told to try out the bento box. There are so many choices. The one I settled on was Chef Choice of nigiri with your choice of a roll and two apps. I made all the right choices apparently. The peppered tuna slices were so thin and covered in crushed black pepper, tasted like bacon of the sea. The tofu agadashi was also deliciously crispy and tasty. The chicken Katsura was so crispy yet tender. Don't let this quiet, unassuming place fool you, the food is on point!

I must comment on their ramen. I was craving some ramen and sushi so my sister and I looked up some nearby restaurants, and this came up with high reviews. I was eager to see what the hype was about so we were happy that once we got to the restaurant, we were seated right away. We got the choose three sushi, and had spicy tuna, spicy crab, and Cajun calamari. Along with that I ordered char siu ramen with shoyu broth, which is a soy based broth. This was really good ramen, and the broth was very flavorful. I added some chili oil for some extra heat, and that raised the flavor profile of the dish. Overall, I enjoyed this greatly. As for the sushi, I didn't think the sushi was the best I've had, especially having eaten sushi in bigger cities. It didn't seem very fresh to me, and the only palatable one I enjoyed was the spicy crab. My sister also ordered char-siu ramen with tonkotsu broth, which is a pork bone based broth. She wasn't a fan of the broth and described it as tasting like water. After trying a bit of mine, she did like it.

I didn't give 5 Stars because of no mackerel fish. Otherwise, I'm experimenting with several other options. Hot tea drink. Lots of carry-out happening. I've asked for several octopus and tuna variations. All was REALLY good.

Yum! I will be back. Great food and service. I had the lunch bento with teriyaki shrimp, pepper, tuna, tuna roll, and Hotz's.

Had the Tougen Combo B: 3 special rolls + 2 regular rolls, $65 & the soft shell crab tempura. Delicious & fresh sushi. Soft shell crab tempura came with tempura squash, sweet potato, onion, rice & sauce. Friendly & efficient service. Decor is lacking, but the food made up for it. Would definitely return.

I don't know where to start. I really love this place. My family and I decided to try this place as a last minute birthday dinner 2 years ago. And we have been coming back almost every month since then. Their sushi is unmatched. I have never had sushi of such a stellar quality and freshness. Not only is their sushi amazing, but also their hibachi is the best in town, we order the steak hibachi with noodles and veggies (pictured below). The lamb and squid skewers are melt in your mouth delicious!!! Please try the Caddy Roll, the Crazy Dragon Roll, the Spicy Salmon roll... or anything! I have yet to have a roll I dislike from this establishment. Also the salmon nigiri is delicious and totally worth every penny!! The staff is extremely friendly. The owner is friendly and interactive and really helps his guests have a good time. The wait staff is attentive and does a great job while handling a full house and taking mobile orders all in the heat of a pandemic. (Which might I add this restaurant has done and continues to do a great job with cleanliness and sanitation throughout the past year and a half during COVID). Definitely give this place a try if you love sushi or any Japanese cuisine!

Definitely try a bento box. It's a great deal with a ton of flavors and textures.

Sitting in a strip mall with some of the best BBQ, Indian and Farm to Table in the area, Tougen has a lot of pressure to help solidify this strip mall into the foodie destination it's destined to be. And you know what, I think they're going to do it! On our first visit, we enjoyed two bento boxes and some wasabi pork shumai. I tried the bento box #3 which comes with 7 pieces of sashimi, along with 2 appetizers and a roll. I tried the agadashi tofu and the crab sunomono, along with a shrimp and avocado roll. Our meals of course also came with the classic iceberg salad and miso soup, which were both very good. First up, I have to say the only "disappointment" was the wasabi pork shumai. I used the word disappointment loosely because it wasn't bad. I just didn't expect it to be fried and crispy, and expected a stronger wasabi flavor. As for my box, it was AWESOME. The sashimi was surprisingly fresh and well-cut. Like I could have just eaten a giant plate of the fish and I would have been very happy. The crab sunomono (shredded seafood and veggie salad) was refreshing and sweet. The agadashi tofu was fantastic. I'm used to flat pieces floating in sauce, but not here. Instead it was cubed and nicely fried, covered in bento flakes with the sauce on the side. And the roll? It was good! Next time I will try some of the specialty rolls and do a deeper dive into the sashimi offerings. The staff is super friendly and the space is super clean. There is no question I will be back. Even if you're not in that part of town, it's worth a trip to try out what I will say... is some of the best sushi in NW Ohio for the price, if not some of the best sushi compared to places a bit more expensive.

Absolute amazing customer service! We picked up a large take out order while in town... we live about 30 minutes away and when I was pulling into the driveway they called to let us know that they forgot two of our meals. I told them I would call back in about 5 minutes once I got my groceries, toddler and infant unloaded. When we went through what we had and decided we would make it work for our family. I called them back and just asked them for a refund. The owner actually refused and delivered our food all the way to our home because he felt so bad! Food was amazing and we can't wait to go back because of how great the service was, even after a mistake. read more

Ok I'm baffled by the 5 star reviews..... Have you ever eaten sushi much less used a restroom??.. I went to wash my hands before dinner excited to try this new "5 star sushi restaurant". Holy lord I should have left after that. The bathroom looks as bad or worse than any truck stop bathroom I've been in on the highway. One word DIRTY!!!! Beyond!!!! Then once the food came I could only imagine how dirty the kitchen could be after the bathroom I couldn't manage to eat. My husband however decided to try it and was certain he would be sick. The tempura vegetables were a mystery and the sushi as unfortunate. It only truly deserves 1 star. But if you desire to try it anyway let the lord be with you and don't look in the bathroom. read more

Ordered delivery. The food was beyond exceptional. Unfortunately they didn't have all the items I had initially ordered but they contacted me to make substitutions were available (and were very polite). Ended up getting some sashimi (octopus, sea urchin, and surf clam), and two rolls (Aloha Roll, and Sumo Roll). I would recommend it all!! read more

Solid sushi, really good Japanese curry, and just ok ramen. The service at Tougen is always great. The one thing holding it back for me is that you can't get the ramen spicy . I just so wanted this to be my ramen place, but that is a deal breaker for me. I still go for solid carry out sushi and really good Japanese curry though. read more

Always delicious! Hands down the best sushi in NW Ohio. Always huge portions of fish in each roll, and always carefully made at a great price! They're occasionally doing takeout deals but eating in is comfortable as well. Try the salmon rolls, and we also love the Ocean roll. But honestly everything is fantastic. read more

AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE! Seriously! I found them on Facebook and I order sushi. I messaged their Facebook page inquiring about a picture they'd posted a few years ago so I could order that next time. They responded in less than 5 minutes and even let me know via Facebook message when the driver was on his way to my home. The delivery guy was super nice and the sushi was divine! Delivery was suspiciously fast lol. I was shocked. 10/10! read more

I was in the hunt for sea food. I didn't want red lobster I was looking for something that was little less franchise. I was looking for something with a decent cold bar. It seems with the pandemic a lot of the restaurants had been closed. I get it if you don't get enough business you will be wasting a lot of food. I was turning in a parking lot and i noticed the Tougen. I walk and was greeted by the sushi chef. I found a nice little seat in the corner and started to look at the menu. I started off with the miso soup. It was warm, light and tasty. Then I ordered two rolls. I ordered the New Orleans roll and the crazy dragon roll. The choices were superb. The New Orleans roll was tempura fried jalapeno Stuffed with Spicy Salmon, Spicy Shrimp, Cream Cheese, Lettuce and Avocado. It has enough heat that you can feel it but not so much that it ruins the flavors of the roll. I also ordered a Jade roll. It is spicy crab, cucumber and crunch. topped with layer of avocado and spicy crab. The jade even though it states spicy crab it is minimal on heat. The taste is awesome with a burst of flavor on my tongue. This place was an awesome fine. I will be back soon. read more

My spouse and I order carryout from Tougen regularly. There is currently no indoor seating due to COVID as of September 2020. Everything on the menu is very good, my favorite in particular is the robatayaki (meat skewers). Very tasty and delicious. The prices are very reasonable, especially the 4-roll sushi dinner for $16. I went here and had take out. The Hibachi chicken was very good taste and price wise! The gentlemen gave me samples of two sauces both of which were very different and delicious . Very friendly staff. My sons gonna love the sush Went back and ate in with my family. It was excellent and Ken did an excellent job despite his boss picking on him! The best Japanese food you can find in Toledo. A cute hole-in-the-wall restaurant with a staff that treats every customer like family. The owner, Jon, makes it clear that he loves what he does and shares his passion with his customers. Ken is an absolutely amazing sushi chef--sitting at the sushi bar, watching him prepare rolls is an experience in of itself! Big enough menu to find something for everyone. Definitely recommend the Robatayaki mushroom (Japanese barbecue), it's to die for! Also try the Tamago (it's made in-house). Also offers unique, delicious dishes that you can't find anywhere else in Toledo such as the Omu Rice and the Japanese Curry. A must-try! read more

This is a great casual spot to enjoy some yummy, fairly priced sushi. We like the miso, octopus salad, and "pick 4" rolls. They do a kani (crab) salad that our kids love. We've been over a dozen times now, I would definitely recommend this place for when you want sushi without the large bill and (still) hungry belly. read more

Excellent Caddy roll! It was so good, we ordered a second one. That plus a plate of sashimi was out of this world. Definitely a place to go back to. It appears to be a family owned and operated restaurant so it has a more comfortable feel. Definitely a winner! read more

Absolutely AMAZING! Their waitress was super attentive on waiting on us and refilling our drinks without ever asking. The sushi tasted great and they have a lot of options to choose from. Their chef even came out at one point to say "just one minute and 20 seconds left and you'll have your food" haha! Definitely will be returning again. read more

I loved Tougen BEFORE I knew the owner was my neighbor! I was having a small dinner gathering and was seeking out scallop shells for serving and he gladly gave me 8 of theirs that they were scrapping, free of charge. I cleaned them up and they were beautiful and worked well for the purpose. We have since moved, but are still in the area and plan on returning as soon as possible. My husband and I love sushi and this was always and still is one of our go-to places, when we have money to order out. The restaurant is family owned and run and make everything fresh to order. Everything is DELICIOUS and made with pride. My husband doesn't say much but when I asked him how he would describe Tougen, he gave two thumbs up and said "They are VERY good; one of the best in the area, especially for the price" - and we have sampled many of the sushi places in our area. There are a lot of sushi places in the Toledo area. Tougen is a hidden gem. If you are a fan of great sushi, hibachi, ramen, udon, and teriyaki but aren't a fan of packed restaurants with waiting lists and long lines, then you must check this place out. It is small and unassuming but the food is authentic and fresh. My son would rather eat the ramen here then food from any of the fast food restaurants.
