I would say it was loud enough to enjoy the eclectic mix of music but still quiet enough to hear each other - very important for us. Touche' has been around since I moved to Austin in '99 and has always been a quick, reliable go-to venue for visitors and newbies (noobs) with high impact and payoff. Here's the lowdown: - One of a Kind: They offer the Flaming Dr. Pepper shot (albeit 9 bucks) that is quite entertaining. The bartender has to spent ample time to set up and then carefully execute. Noobs are always watching and wondering "WTF are they doing?" and these guys have mastered the feat. - In & Out Quickie Factor: No matter how busy 6th Street can get, you could be in and out of this place in a few minutes. It's a simple single floor layout, no climbing steps and shuffling through lines of crowds or labyrinths to get inside or to the bar. It's quick-turn at its best as you could easily spend double and triple the time in other establishments doing the same thing. - Wow Factor: You save time and I always walk out with my guests or noobs very excited about the Flaming Dr. Pepper experience. So if your crowd is bored and aimlessly walking around 6th and waiting in lines, this would be the place to get them back on the bandwagon. - Resilient: I believe this bar has had a love/hate affair w/ the Fire Marshall throughout the years in regards to the Flaming Dr. Pepper. I recall some visits they said they couldn't serve it anymore, then a few months later I return and it's back. Most recently they still offer the shot, but it's done at the opposite end of the bar (as opposed to any section of the bar). - It Delivers: The shot actually tastes pretty good, just like a warm Dr. Pepper. I have yet to meet anyone who likes Dr. Pepper that hasn't liked this shot- or the experience. - Paying Homage: I bartended in college and served the Flaming Dr. Pepper, but only 1 at a time and never like this (multiple shots and spitting fire). I've also tried other shots that included 151 proof w/ a fire element and have paid the price. So if you were to ask me today to fill my mouth up with flammable liquor, then coat my fingers with it, then light my fingers on fire and blow hard at my hot fingers - - I'll ask you to first validate my health insurance and Emergency Room co-pay - - and based on that I'll assess the risk and make my decision. On second thought, how about a "Hell No", because I'd likely blow all over the rest of my hand, and by then even Fire Marshall Jim wouldn't be able to save our asses. If that happened then the shot's name would effectively be changed to "Flaming Sparty's Dumbass". read more

It was a Saturday night. I was out with my fiance, best friend, and a group of really nice Australians we had met at a previous bar. Having out of towners with us, I naturally wanted to show them all the sixth street hot spots, touche being one of them. We go into the bar, and I order 5 or 6 flaming doctor peppers. we gather around the prepping area, marked on the sides with thick white lines, which we stand behind for relative safety. As the bar tender is preparing to breath fire on the glasses, someone outside our group says "wait, I need to get a video". The bartender directs her the to sign hanging up above the bar, which reads "We don't care about your snapchat, bitch". A nice touch. The bartender does hit flamey flamey thing, and we knock back the drinks. I pay the tab, and we leave. This is a great bar when you're drunk and flush with money to afford flaming doctor peppers. The only thing really worth visiting this bar for is the Flaming Dr Peppers. The fire trick is really awesome to see, and the drink tastes EXACTLY like a Dr Pepper. What sucks is that they don't allow you to take pictures or film them doing it, which is disappointing for someone who loves to document their experiences (and actually remember what they saw and where, after a wild night on 6th). Maybe it's a liability thing, or maybe they are worried about other bars copying, but I feel like they could actually bring in a lot more business if this trick had the chance to go viral. Touche and their Flaming Dr. Peppers are a must for me when I am on a 6th Street bar crawl, especially when I'm with people here who have never been to Austin / 6th Street / Texas before. The look on their faces when the bartenders spit flame onto their drinks. Priceless. Aside from Flaming Dr. Peppers, they have $1 shots, friendly bartenders, and the bouncer told me to walk on in with my lit cigarette. Hooray. While I love this bar, I usually don't stay for very long. I tend to hit it and quit it, and then move along to the next bar, but Touche is always one of the highlights of my night. read more

Much like owner CJ's other bar, Darwin's, Touche is another welcome stop on the long stretch of Sixth street bars. It is average size for a Sixth street bar but like Darwin's has a much more laid back and friendlier atmosphere than most of the bars on the street. Recently they built a small stage for South by Southwest which now goes mostly unused but when it is used you can sometimes catch some pretty amazing acts here. The bar staff and door staff are very friendly, quick to become your friends and within a moment or two of hanging out here you will find yourself making it a point to stop by and see them you are downtown. The drinks are strong, the selection is excellent. They don't serve food here, but then again who needs food in a BAR!! The music is never too loud but never too quiet either and if you don't like it just tell the bartender and she can probably find anything you like. This is a great place to take a break from Sixth street or to start your night. The people will become your friends quickly and have you coming back every weekend. Stop in for a quick drink and you just might make a friend for life. read more

You can smoke in here! I don't know how they get away with this one. Is this a mob agreement with the cops? Or a deftly conniving Who Cares mentality toward the law? That was the first thing I noticed as I entered. So, in the colder months, if you are a smoker, definitely meander to Touche'. The bouncer is hilarious. The bartenders are really friendly and they are fast and efficient. You can find dollar shots here, which granted, are not crazy strong nor vast in selection (choose one of five, such as Nutty Nut, or hell--for a dollar each do like I do and, at that price, try them all!) This is a place I personally like to just go and chill for a little bit. That being said, well... there is not ample seating to do so. But with the relatively affordable drinks, screw sitting down and just be a barfly. While there are no draft beers on tap, there is a decent selection of bottles to suit your taste. It's very easy to become a regular here. You don't plan on stopping by Touche' whenever you travel downtown, and you don't mean to stay as long as you do, but you kind of show up every time. We stumbled across this place, and what we like to the music that they played. So they play late 90's hip hop which is exactly what we listen to in high school. I would just go there to listen to the music. What was also cool was they had $1 shots and $2 beers. They also had this special drink where the bartender would blow fire into the drink and it was a good show. The drinks here were cheap so it is a nice place to stop by while walking along 6th street. If you like to dance you can also dance. Bartenders were nice, so I would go again if I come back to Austin. read more

Yuck. That's the best way I can describe this place. Remember those college bars where the floor is sticky, the bathrooms are atrocious, and if you're 22 years old, you are the oldest one there by 3 years? That's this place. The bartender we dealt with was cool and the drinks weren't crazy expensive like they were at some 6th street bars. But the real turn off was the smoking. Apparently you can smoke in this bar (or at least aren't told not to) and the 10 minutes we spent here was enough to make all of us reek of smoke the rest of the night. read more

This is more so directed to the manager- If I had the option to chose no stars I would. I went to this bar during SXSW while on my visit with a few friends who lived in Austin. I never typically write reviews, however after the horrible attitude and treatment I received from the manager ( he had grey hair and was slim form)- I will suggest not to visit this bar and to save your money and utilize it in an area where they actually care about their customers who spend money to support their business. I would like to first off state I was in no means intoxicated. I was in line waiting to use the ladies restroom, when the manager (clearly upset and frustrated I'm sure due to the volume of people) came by and copped an attitude towards me and my friend stating, ( and very rudely) we were unable to wait in line to use the restroom. ( mind you there had been a line the entire time I had been there- give or take an hour). Now I would understand if there was a sign, or if perhaps if we were behaving like obnoxious morons- however we were patiently awaiting to use the restrooms (to add, which smelled of sewage ) When I asked if he was playing around, he informed me that he was not, and if I had a problem then he would call the cops and kick me out. Being that I'm big into business and customer service, I would like to state that if you enjoy being treated like scum, by all means please go here. I suggest to the manager if you do not enjoy your job then look for another, because you clearly lack any patience and understanding towards how a business operates; that your customers carry your business. I love this place! it was one of the first bars i went too when i moved to Austin and has become tradition between me and my friends to start the night with those infamous flaming Dr. Pepper shots! Pros. Inexpensive, right on 6th and easy to get too. The bartenders are all really chill and have always recived great speedy service. Also whoever picks the music there does a great job always the perfect mix to start my night! Cons. Its small, and when it gets busy can be a little bit difficult to weave your way back to the bathroom. But Overall its an awesome bar with a great staff and music. Highly Recommend! read more

This is a hallway bar. They are never my favorite kinds of bars. That said, we had a great gig here! Super cramped stage, weird requests from the soundguy, and a rotating crowd couldn't ruin this show! We played great regardless of any inconvenience, so I'll always be oddly fond of Touché. There were some real dicks that came in through this place. I saw some of the rudest shit here. The barstaff on the other hand were great, though, so fuck it! Which was exactly what I said when I saw this bathroom: yuck!!!! Needless to say, there's no door on the stall, but to top it off: NO TOILET SEAT! I changed in the van, later. I would suggest getting the flaming Dr. Pepper. I can't say I've had anything else, though. It is a great place to visit on 6th and take anyone visiting from out of town just for the flaming dr. Pepper . I saw some others reviews and I can't say I've had anything bad happen, but I typically don't go during crazy times or huge festivals and I never used their bathrooms. I go at quiet times because I hate crowds. I would suggest going then or you get crowds and bachelorette parties taking up the little space. They do the best flaming dr. I really enjoyed coming here, they had drink specials which were awesome. The night started out kind of slow, bc the people that were singing were doing slower songs. But by 10ish it definitely picked up, and everyone was having a great time. Can't wait to come back here and sing again! They have HUGE selection of music to choose from which is great. This is a good meeting place during SXSW for people with wristbands to meet up with friends who don't for a little while. They have live music and booze and a couple of pretty faces. The live music here during SXSW *tends* to be mainstream with a few more covers than I'd like, but if you're trying to find a central spot with music that's probably not going to bother a diverse group, that you can all actually get into during SXSW, you might consider this as an option. read more

The bartender must have been having a really really bad day I wish I would have caught his name but he refereed to himself as an "English man".......anyways... My boyfriend and I walked in seating ourselves at the bar top and proceeded to give our order. Immediately we're stoped and he try's to correct me saying I need to ask "may I" instead of "can I". To the bartender who asked us to leave for not giving him the upmost respect after disrespecting my boyfriend as well- Someone who is as nasty as you does not deserve my respect and perhaps you need to reevaluate where you're working.
