This is my family's favorite ramen spot in Boston, and I was in the area so I thought I'd stop by again!! I'm not sure why the reviews are so low! My friend and I ordered the edamame, the pork belly bao buns, and miso ramen. All were delicious. I really enjoyed the ramen in particular. Totto does a chicken paitan broth instead of pork tonkotsu, and I was impressed with the flavor they are able to impart in this broth. The miso was the perfect kick of salty and umami. The noodles were cooked to a delicious al dente. There was a healthy garnish of bean sprouts and scallions, which added to the texture and flavor of the bowl. The service was quick and attentive. If you're in Assembly Row and need a quick, warming bite, I would definitely recommend Totto! read more

We stopped by for lunch shortly after noon, and there was only one waitress working. Since we had our dog with us, we sat at one of the outside tables near the front. The place opens up its entire front wall to the sidewalk, so honestly, the whole restaurant is open-air--no real indoor/outdoor difference. After waiting for nearly ten minutes with the waitress nowhere to be seen--despite there being only two or three other parties inside--we decided to grab a menu from an empty table next to us. When the waitress finally came over, she aggressively questioned why we had taken the menu. We explained that we had been waiting for a while and didn't see the harm in grabbing it ourselves since she hadn't brought us one. She snapped back that she now had to reset that table. Honestly, we didn't think it was that big of a deal. When our food arrived, things went from bad to worse. We found a hair and a dead fly that was clearly soaked through in one bowl of ramen, and two small bugs in the other. Look, we could have let the hair slide, but finding bugs was too much. We scooped them out with a spoon and called the waitress over to show her. We expected her to replace the bowls immediately, but she simply shrugged and said, "That's what happens when you sit outside." So, by her logic, if we had sat "indoors" and found bugs in our food, would we have gotten a free replacement? Again, the entire front wall opens to the sidewalk, so the whole place is open-air anyway. Besides, the bugs didn't just land in the soup; they had clearly been cooked or soaked in there for a while. I've been to a number of ramen spots in the area and I'd put this one in the middle. I'm a fan of a super umami broth with a strong flavor... wouldn't quite stay Totto hit the mark on that scale. The pork was okay, but wasn't anything memorable. I did really like the interior of the restaurant. It wasn't too fancy, but it wasn't too casual either. Service was fairly standard. Obviously one of the trendiest and tastiest ramens you'll ever get in the area. The interior is nicely decorated and the ambiance is very casual and chill. Service was great, they were very attentive and our food came fast. I got the Spicy Paitan Ramen and I wanted it really spicy so this definitely satisfied my cravings! Lots of thick fresh noodles and I enjoy the thick slices of pork! Pork was nicely marinated and I really like the flavor from torching it. I also ordered a kid ramen for my sister but it is just noodles and soup for like $9 and I would like to see some meat in there for that price. Toppings are far too few for the price and additional toppings are too tiny for the price as well. We couldn't believe that the signature dish doesn't have egg or seaweed. I had the spicy and I had to pay extra for an egg in mine. The egg was fine. Generous portion of onions and bean sprouts in the miso ramen. Very nice atmosphere and good ramen but not the best ramen I've had. I ordered the Paitan Ramen ($17). The ramen broth feels unique to Totto compared to other ramens I've had. I personally found the broth and chashu a bit under-seasoned. Not terrible, just not the deeply umami flavors I've come to expect from a pork ramen. The service was great, and the employees are respectful and helpful. We're grateful that they offer dog friendly outdoor seating, which was clean and comfortable. They're also located right by the Artisan East Parking Garage, which offers up to 3 hours of free parking. Overall, it was a good visit that "scratches the itch" for ramen. read more

I came here because a friend of mine recommended it. It's located in a large outdoor shopping outlet with many eateries, so we settled on this because I haven't had ramen in many months. The menu is small which is great because it means the food is probably of high quality. The layout is nice and our server was on top of everything. It's quite expensive however, but given how touristy the area is it didn't surprise me. I got the spicy ramen with chicken and had them add fried garlic. I love having a real ramen restaurant in Assembly Row! I've been coming here for years and it is so good! I like how the menu is straightforward with just a couple options. The noodles are wicked filling and delicious. The restaurant itself is small but it works for what this location is; an intimate ramen restaurant where you won't plan to spend a long time at. The service is fast and you'll be in and out much faster than a typical restaurant. They do serve alcohol here if you are wondering! I got the Spicy Paitan Ramen, which was OK because I have had much better - sorry but it is very hard to beat Philly's Terakawa Ramen. It wasn't spicy enough for me to feel the heat. Came here on a rainy day, place was busy with one waitstaff person. We were seated right away, water brought to table. Shortly thereafter drink orders taken. When the drinks came back we placed an order for appetizers and our entrees. The appetizer was fried veggie gyoza. 6 pieces and totally yummy. Really good crunch and flavor. Entrees up next -- she had the fried chicken ramen and I the veggie ramen. She loved her food and I mine. The portions are huge and delicious. Even though there was one wait person she was amazing. I really want to like this place! Atmosphere: Small restaurant with outdoor seating as well. The kitchen is a sort of open kitchen concept, so you can seee the chefs working when youre heading to the wash room. Very causal vibe in here and decor is very much around the black and red color scheme. its a cute spot. Attire: no required dress code. Food: We got the spicy paitan ramen, their super paitan and their version of calamari. Firstly, the calamari is delicious. The flavor is very on point with the salt and pepper and seasonings. One thing tho, if you do not like tentacles...you may not enjoy this as much because they do serve all parts of the squid. The spicy miso ramen is actually spicy which I love because many places say their food is spicy and its just meh. If sriracha is spicy to you...then you probably should not order this spicy ramen because you will struggle. The thing about the ramen at this place (if I remember it correctly) is they're chicken based so their broth is mainly chicken rather than your usual pork based broth. For some reason, this makes the broth have a much thicker mouth feel and feels heavy and oily. The flavors are there for this bowl, but I'm not a fan of the mouth feel (different from texture). The super paitan is their mega sized ramen with all the fixings. It is marked as a fan favorite or popular item. However, all that I tasted in this bowl was garlic. Now, dont get me wrong, I LOVE garlic and will eat a garlic clove whole, but this was overwhelming in a ramen setting. When I eat ramen, Im expecting a savory soup with depths of flavor, but if garlic is the only thing I taste, it makes it very one dimensional and the need to add condiments such as vinegar or lemon/lime or something (which I do not believe they offer). I suggest to stay away from this bowl. It's not the ramen you're craving, trust me. Location: They have a couple locations at very convenient spots in and around the city. I know there's one in the Allston/Brighton area and this location in somerville assembly square. Easy to get to both location by public transportation or driving. I suggest train if you hate looking for parking as much as I do. Price: The price point is very good for a bowl of ramen. really cant complain on this aspect. And youre definitely going to walk out with a full belly. Parking: Its in assembly square so there is parking both private free lot, meter street parking or private non-free lot. As someone that hates looking for parking, I don't really mind driving to either of their locations because parking isn't a big hassle. Overall: Eh, I keep giving this place a try because I want it to taste good and I want to like it! Ive been to multiple of their locations, even the one in NY, but I'm not impressed or satisfied. I'm surprised this place doesn't have higher rating! Their ramen is fairly priced and delicious! If you decide to dine in during COVID, they have plastic dividers between each table and all of their staff members wear masks and gloves. I felt safe while dining here. We started off with the fried chicken appetizer. It came with 6 pieces of chicken tenders with yuzu mayo on top. They were crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. However, the batter didn't have too much flavor and wasn't spicy at all. They were more hot temperature-wise than spicy. As for the ramen, we got Paitan Ramen, Miso Paitan, and Spicy Paitan. Paitan Ramen had the best broth overall. It was rich and had a depth of flavor. I would highly recommend this one! The only downside is that it didn't come with any eggs so you'd have to order it as an add on. Miso Paitan was the only one we got that had half of a soft boiled egg. One of my favorite go-to spots in the area. I often order Uber-eats delivery from Totto to get their congee rice porridge. It is superb on a cold day and a great deal if you want a taste of their delicious broth without breaking the bank (and I'm nearly always craving it.) I'm not a fan of adding so much of the green onions but it is nice to look at. I've had their habanero fried chicken, char siu mayo don, and takoyaki - all of which are great on their own without a main dish, or to share with another person along with a bowl of ramen. I've tried their spicy ramen and miso ramen and they are really tasty. Since visiting Japan however I am very picky with flavor:price ratio and often don't get ramen unless it's an occasion here. I think it's normal for ramen spots in the Boston area to be around $18-25 a bowl. I consider Toto my go-to since I've never had to make a reservation and so far haven't had to wait more than ten minutes for a table. Also, there's affordable parking! Ambiance is real chill during slow times and from what I've seen, family friendly! And they have alcoholic beverages which pairs well with the meal. I was excited to try Totto, as I recall having a delightful Totto ramen experience in NYC. The taste and flavors of these two establishments, unfortunately, are not comparable. The broth is not as infused with flavor, and the char siu is very fatty. The char siu could also be torched longer for a more charred flavor. Totto is stealing my heart one visit at a time. They do not use pork for their broths. They have some of the best friend chicken and fried octopus; just do yourself a solid and try.
