The VitalShred page gives no clue about the services actually available at the Kearny Mesa location (I called to make sure, as I didn't want to make the drive for nothing). Super simple and glad we drove up the Kearny Mesa to shred our old legal docs en masse. Point off because we paid an extra buck or two to "witness" the destruction of our docs just to be on the safe side, but all that entailed was the guy stepping aside and letting us watch the stuff getting chewed up by the shredder via a monitor. Nothing extra other than that, which I thought was chintzy. My two cents - don't advertise the difference - just say "complimentary witnessing" (and charge the higher price...) I went into Total Secure Shredding this morning and Kyle was extremely helpful, very efficient, and super nice. He processed 4 items for my husband and I, and 3 items for my parents. The whole process was very simple: (1) Kyle opened up our devices to pull out the hard drives while I watched (towers, a laptop and a couple of All-In-One computers), (2) then he shredded all of the hard drives while I watched, (3) then he showed me all of the shredded items in the metal bins. He was able to recycle all of the items except the monitor, cables, mice, and keyboards so Kyle gave me the phone number for Secure E-Waste and (for FREE) I was able to hand those items over to them for recycling. They were really nice too! It feels great getting this done today and I felt VERY happy that I was able to see it done in person. It was a wonderful experience -- they have a new customer for life. This location might be hard to find but worth it with plenty of parking. I brought several large boxes of confidential paperwork in for shredding and I could not have been more pleased. I paid a reasonable price to watch it get shredded in front of me, well worth the money, if not, I would have to spend hours doing it myself. Been there and done it several times. My business of two employees benefits from the shredding just as much as a business of 100 employees. I also include my own personal documents. If you ordered a standard keurig and took out the packaging, that would be a small box. I think the price is 6-7 bucks. I consider this fair value given the current inflated times. They have a variety of shred options (go to them or they come to you). Prices vary based on if you want to witness the shredding or not. I believe this company was bought by Pro Shred which is why their truck and invoice states Pro Shred. I didn't think the receptionist was as amazing as their website (what a weird statement). But using their website was easy and an efficient way to price out their shredding options. Plus, it gave us a discount on the job. The shred truck is noisy - much like garbage trucks that come by every week. They price the shred based on how many boxes you have or the garbage bin they fill (see pic). The garbage bin equals about 10 boxes worth of papers/files/etc. Bob, the driver/shredder, was great. He was professional and helpful. We thought we would have to load the garage bin ourselves but no - he did it all. I've been here a couple of times now. Usually fast friendly service. This last time I went, the lady took my box and sorted through everything. I found that to be odd and an invasion of my privacy of the things I needed to get shredded. I chose to watch like I always do. They usually just take your stuff and start feeding it through the shredder. When I was there there were a few other people and none of them had their things sorted through first. One lady even asked why they were sorting my things and if that was new. As I said a bit odd, and I felt singled out. I also had photographs and they charged me $20 (half a box) this is not listed in the business or on the pricing list. So just ask and be aware. Like I said I felt singled out from all the other people who wanted their items shredded as well. read more

I had two computers (desktop and laptop) that someone had damaged and they were both inoperable. Needless to say, I wasn't too keen on the idea of having my personal information available in someone else's hands. I read the reviews on this place and then went to their website and was sold. Interesting fact I learned from their site is that one of the hard drives from the space shuttle Columbia had fallen thousands of feet after the explosion and a large amount of info was still recovered off that drive! That sold me on needing to physically destroy my hard drives. I brought my laptop and desktop in whole, and the process was very easy. I handed them to the gentleman there, and told him I wanted the hard drives destroyed and the rest discarded. He told me he could recycle the rest, which I agreed to. I had forgotten this was an option but always glad to recycle whenever possible. I watched him take the hard drives out and then he got my attention before dropping them in the industrial electronic shredder, then showed me the resulting pieces in a bin right after. Mission accomplished! The price was super fair and I was even able to use a Yelp check in offer for a discount. This place provides a service which is crucial in this day and age. I would probably take off a half star because I asked for (and paid for) witnessed shredding. I was a little surprised when the guy took the cart full of boxes down the driveway and around the back, out of my sight. I brought this up with the owner while I was there, and he agreed that this wasn't ideal. Suggest that a ramp be put in the front - both to avoid walking into that tiny front step and make it easy for employees to roll the cart in the front door, to keep stuff in sight.
