I've been to Hammer Burger now at least half a dozen times. I had to go to Santa Ana on a Saturday…read moreand decided to take my wife there for lunch, after 1:00. We were lucky and found a parking space on Bush St. We both ordered the Classic Hammer Burger ($10) and a regular order of shoestring fries. I was surprised at how busy they were. The burgers come out fresh and hot. They are smashed thin and have a crispy edge. The slice of cheese is perfectly melted. There are grilled onions at the bottom of the burger and the top is dressed with thick cut pickles and a decorative drizzle of Hammer Sauce. One of the things I like most about this burger is the overall texture and the proportions of beef to the steamed potato bun. It's soft and melty and delicious. The fries are great too (thin and crispy) and they have a nice selection of house sauces. Their signature Hammer Sauce, White BBQ sauce, Garlic Sauce, Chipotle Mayo, Jalapeño Ranch and Ranch. I went around the world and tried every one. Customizing your sauce by mixing a few together is not a bad idea and likely a veteran move. I have had their sweet potato fries before and they are above average. I have also had their chili cheese fries and a cup of chili...not bad. Their Flatty Melt ($11) was the first burger I tried when going the first time. Unique and tasty. I've also had Spicy Smash ($11) that has a pile of grilled jalapeño's on top. It's hot so be prepared. They have a nice selection of beers but I haven't gone down that road yet. Lunch was so good, I bought my son-in-law a $75 gift certificate. The downtown area has really be revitalized and now it's fun to walk around.

The staff were friendly and attentive. We arrived right before the dinner rush. The place had TVs on and music playing. It seemed like a fun place to eat and hang out. One of the staff mentioned how they were packed last weekend with all the FIFA games. We ordered take out - a classic Hammer Burger, a half order of chili cheese fries, and a small order of onion rings. Sauce station was near the soda, you could get whichever ones you liked. Despite our 15 minute drive home, the food was still warm and really delicious. The burger had good flavor with and without their house sauce. The chili cheese fries were skinny fries with a cheese sauce and bean-less chili. The chili was filling and had a little kick to it. The batter-fried onion rings were (still) crispy and yummy with both ranch and the house sauce. We will definitely be back to fill our smashburger and chili cheese fries cravings! PS- The bathrooms were clean.

That said, I was pleasantly surprised. The burger was flavorful, cooked well, and hit the spot. What really stood out was the value. The cashier was friendly, easy to talk to, and the whole experience was smooth from start to finish. From the two, the gully smash was our favorite--it's like a classic smash burger but the addition of pastrami enhanced it! The Bhangra smash was definitely different than any burger I've had before but you can definitely tell the south Asian influences in this one. The burgers were both enjoyable, however, they were on the oily side and felt a bit heavy. I'd say prices here were also pretty steep for what you're getting. I'd say that this is a great option for halal burgers, but I think if you're not restricted to eating halal meat, there are burger options that I like more. The restaurant itself is in a food court that has a decent amount of both indoor and outdoor seating. Service here is friendly and you could really tell that they're passionate about their food here (which is always positive points in my book).

Doors wide open so I knew there wouldn't be a/c running during this painful heat wave and I was right. It was hot in there. No one at the counter, so we awkwardly wait for about 4 or 5 minutes that felt a lot longer. Someone pops out, no greeting, like we interrupted them (maybe we did) and we order. I got a grilled cheese and my friend got the burger. He got the combo. When the dude asked if I wanted a drink, I said just a cup for water. He hesitated, then the look on his face looked like he was mad about it. We pay, my friend doesn't leave a tip on the screen because I wanted to tip in cash. And it took forever to get the receipt to the point of my friend saying "it's cool, don't need it". This dude seemed so annoyed by us. He didn't give us our cups so we sat down. He starts making the food. I was like, he's waiting to give us our cups so we get less refills since we only got one soda (just me overthinking, who really knows). When the food was ready, he brings it out to us, which was nice. My friend said, oh our drinks! And stands up. The guy points to the cups next to the register so apparently we were supposed to grab our own cups. The water from the soda fountain was good, didn't have that tap taste. That's a plus. We didn't share the soda, which I felt we were silently being accused of doing. The fries are hot and fresh and were really good. The grilled cheese was nothing special, smashed kinda flat so not super cheesy and pretty much like one your babysitter makes you at home. But that's a good thing so no complaint. My friend said the burger was really good, and the thousand island style sauce was superb- he said it tasted homemade and had a nice kick and took the burger to a higher level. Anyway, it was just an annoying experience that would have been a lot better if the guy showed any sense of friendliness and if he simply said "go ahead and grab your cups". Will I come back? No idea. Maybe not during a heat wave. I'd like to try the burger myself.
