Met up with some college friends when one of their husbands suggested this place. Every place that I've been to in Montclair has never disappointments and seeing this place didn't have TOO many reviews, I'd thought I'd kick start this a little! Off the main Valley Road, we got lucky to find parking right in front of the restaurant. There is additional parking in the back as well so a lot of people do enter from the back entrance, which leads them to their outdoor seating and then to the inside of the restaurant.
One of my friends got there first and went in to get seated...in which they were told that we didn't have reservations for 6. Frustrated after spelling out the last name of the reservations it was made under and repeating the name several times, the restaurant refused to seat us without reservations...even when the restaurant was close to empty. The friend who had made the reservations arrive and went in and was told the reservations were available and seated us right away- not sure WHAT the deal was where they couldn't find the reservations, but this was didn't make us very happy... especially after repeating the name and spelling out the four letter name. Ignoring this little mistake... we followed the hostess to the back where we were seated in their "garden" area. The back area had a very nice set up of tables lawn tables and wooden benches with strings of round light bulbs that run along the tops of the table umbrellas and trees.
The menu is extensive in my opinion and it was very hard to choose what I wanted to eat without ordering too much. A plus for this place is that it's BYOB, like most restaurants in Montclair. Our group started off with the hummus and babaganus (not sure if I spelt this correctly) which was served with freshly baked bread. Everyone ordered different plates that consisted of ground skewered beef, chicken, lamb, chicken with yogurt sauce, and a vegetarian dish that was made up of potatoes and tomatoes.
I ordered the skewered ground chicken which came with 2 big pieces, a small side of rice, one piece of broccoli, a carrot, and half a tomato. The dish was cooked very well with the ground chicken NOT being dry at all. The spices and the juiciness went really well with the chicken and the amount of rice given was more than enough (about palm size). I wish they had more veggies on the side, but I'll take it! My husband ordered the combination platter which was a chicken kebob and lamb kebob which he enjoyed, but the lamb was a little undercooked for his liking.
The service was great. Our waitress was waiting for all the parties in the back, which wasn't too many when we were dining, but she managed to keep up and make sure we were satisfied with the meal.
Parking right in front of the restaurant at night isn't a good idea because they piled on the trash right on the side of my car with no regards to whether or not their trash can scraped my car. I walked out to my car and all I smelt was trash and seeing the trash can rubbing up the side of my car did not make me very happy. I recommend parking in the back, away from the trash and the main road.
I probably wouldn't come back any time soon with so many other places in Montclair, but it's worth a try. Just make sure you make reservations, otherwise they won't seat you even if the place is empty... read more
