BEWARE OF PHONE THIEVES!!! I had my phone stolen OUT OF MY PURSE last night at Toro. The club and security are aware of this being a problem here, they told me it's always the same couple that does it all the time, and yet nothing is done about it. My friend tried calling my phone as soon as I realized and it had already been turned off, they work so fast. When I showed the security guard that my phone was still showing up as being located inside the club (on my friend's find my friends) and that my friend thought she could identify them if she saw them again, he told me to "calm down and move to the side" and that he couldn't do anything about it. Again, Toro knows that this happens on a regular basis and they do nothing to prevent it from happening OR to help the people who were targeted. Steer clear. read more

When I went to leave a review the next day, I read other reviews and realized there's an extremely huge problem with thieves many reviews confirming and also saying employees are involved. A few recent ones saying phone location ended up in TJ, also complaints about not excepting non-US passports or any foreigners. Of course, not because then you have a huge problem on your hands when someone can't get back out of the country because they had their stuff stolen at some club. Also, probably not worth anything in TJ. I was curious to know if they had this under control. Only to find review after review since 10 months ago even one as recent as yesterday!!! Omg!!! Just Terrible... Don't be fooled by the mystic light garden and fancy lcd screens. Service is mediocre and the drink selection is horrible. All this place is missing is red flip cups to serve with bottom shelf beer. Behind the counter you can see beer taps with no taps. I even asked the bar tender if they had simple syrup which they were out of. Not sure what to think of this place. Maybe because it was before 9pm and the DJ/party doesn't start until after 1030pm? Security didn't let me in because I was wearing a bandana. I took it off and offered to throw it away but kept on repeating the same thing "It's policy, it's policy". I don't understand why I can't get in even if I get rid of the bandana. There were also people inside with beanies, hats, and durags. This place had the worst bathroom area ever. I've been to several clubs in Socal and Norcal and have never experienced such a terrible time JUST to use the restroom. There should be a security guiding the area. It took over 40mins to get in. The music and ambiance is fine but the whole bathroom situation would make me NEVER come back. It was my first time here last night with friends. Drinks were good, bartenders were attentive and fast. As soon as we walked in it seem like a great place for some dancing, they played good music upstairs (hip hop and a mix of some reggaeton) downstairs Latino music. However the ventilation is not good at all. There is no airflow downstairs. Could not stay downstairs to enjoy the music, had to move back upstairs and even upstairs there was no good airflow except by the door. At that point we just decided to leave. Great music and atmosphere but could not stay there more than an hour. In my opinion as a paying customer who came in with a group of people, payed for drinks and tipped I would suggest that the owners invest in better AC units, some fans or something. Do not come here unless you want your phone or money to go missing . The staff are in it too so be careful with your stuff. They will grab it from your purse or back pocket. Do not leave anything in the bathroom, once u leave it there it will not be returned even if the staff fined it. Friend lost phone here and it was located at TORO when we asked they said they had nothing although it marked there. Next day phone was there and later located in TJ. If you look drunk the bartenders will take advantage and add their own tip when you're paying for your drink! So please make sure to check when paying bc a woman bartender that made my drink charged me for my AMF and then before turning the screen around to me she clicked on the tip button and gave herself a $5 tip. The music playing and despite the long line, people were leaving just as fast. DO NOT STEP FOOT IN THIS PLACE! I had the unfortunate experience of being told this place had good music for dancing. The drinks served in a plastic ghetto cups were horrible. Staff are rude, and basically just stand there for show. Let me tell you about the crowd, I watched four people carried out cuz they were too drunk. Everyone is either 21 or 45+. The 4 bathroom stall that is downstairs for a over crowded club where you can't move and people puking all over. I put up with all this shit, because we paid a cover and the music was okay for the first hour. It wasn't til I reached into my purse and couldn't find my phone that I lost my shit. I went outside and was harassed by security to throw away my drink, I handed it to him since there's no trash cans anywhere. Standing outside, three other people were also talking to security about their phones being STOLEN! Clearly someone was there stealing phones on purpose. If you wanna be in an over crowded club, with nasty bathrooms and sketch ass people then this is the club for you! No one did anything to help find my phone, security said wait til they close and then when I waited til 1:30am and no staff would talk to me. Such a sad establishment. Also, watch out cause once it closes.. SD police department had 10 cops outside pepper spraying people. I'm embarrassed y'all think a club with no class will make it in SD. I came here on a Sunday night with my friend for galentines - and we had a fantastic time. It is getting a bit hard to find clubs that play Hip-hop and R&B (seems like everywhere I go these days is all EDM??), but Toro KNOWS what to play to get people moving. The dance floor wasn't packed (granted it was Sunday night), but it was great to actually dance and interact with other people, sing along, AND watch cool visuals/music video snippets on the big screen up front! *TRIGGER WARNING- STABBING/IMMENSE LACK OF SECURITY/PROFITS OVER PEOPLE* Still processing my experience here. This is my honest experience at TORO. My boyfriend and I are city-dwellers and always aware of our surroundings. We got into line and begrudgingly each paid a $10 cover (which actually makes no sense in hindsight) since there was no DJ playing, they simply played music videos on the big screens. There is a sign out front that notifies customers to be aware of phone/wallet pick-pockets, which is obviously, knowingly bad. Luckily we were not targeted but we were definitely aware of a young group of 4-5 latino men behind us who definitely were sizing us up upon entry. The crowd is very young, ~21-24 with a few 30-somethings mixed in and 85% men compared to 15% women in attendance. The actual venue is pretty distasteful- tons of trash and liquid on the floor. A lot of the nightclub goers were overly-intoxicated with girls crawling on the floor twerking and guys falling over/down and one guy in particular who had peed on himself through his jeans. It was gross and over-crowded but since we paid a cover, felt the need to stay a little longer. Around 12:30pm we made our way to get another drink when my boyfriend noticed tons of police cars out front. TONS. Yellow tape. We thought something happened outside only to find out through another customer that there was an incident in the mens bathroom downstairs that had "just happened." The music continued for a period, the bartenders did not know what was going on until the police entered TORO and proceeded to put yellow tape across the stairs leading downstairs. We had to leave our drinks and were ushered out in the street. What is really sad, scary and unfortunate is that we noticed a metal detector in the corner of the establishment that was NOT being used. We even overheard the bartenders question why it wasn't being operated. The owner/management of TORO is clearly aware of the crime in this nightclub and area- but obviously chooses PROFITS OVER PEOPLE by collecting $10/pp and cramming young intoxicated individuals in this space but REFUSES TO PROTECT US, their sole way of churning a profit. TORO needs to answer to this: Why do other nightclub spots in the Gaslamp quarter pat down/metal detect or wand patrons but TORO does not? Why is there a $10 cover? When establishments fail to provide a safe space, EVERYONE LOSES...the city of San Diego, customers, security and waitstaff who lose out on wages and tips. Everyone is a victim who had to witness this fully-preventable incident. Shame on TORO. They should be held accountable for this gross negligence and hope and pray the victim recovers and that a lawsuit isn't on the way for them. This place is packed which is a good thing but the way the club is set up makes it hard to move around. You pretty much have to stay in one spot the whole night because theres no room to go anywhere else in the club. Hard to dance as well cause it's so many people and not enough room to do anything. I will say there is a good ratio of females in this club though verses other clubs. The music is cool. read more
