By far my favorite restaurant in the Chicago land area. Every time I've come here the food and service were amazing. Their special changes so I always get to try something new. I ain't no expert in Japanese food but if I see a lot of Japanese customers dining in then I know this place is legit My favorite are the 3 dishes that I posted a pic for (barracuda sashimi, toro tartare, and scallops). Everything tastes very fresh and service is great. They have a daily menu and they rotate their sashimi which means they get them fresh! Pro tip - They allow you to make reservations but there is a minimum charge of $25 ($35 on weekend) per person which is not an issue. This place has changed a great deal since Covid. Decided to come here for lunch after a couple years, and unfortunately, just not worth it. The lunch menu is much smaller than the dinner menu, and they got rid of some items as well. The ramen was one of my favorites, and this one was way too salty. The chicken karaage was good, however, the pieces are not bite sized as it is supposed to be. I also attempted to order one dish to go and the server had to ask the cook if they can make it. She returns to our table and says they cannot cook this order since they are too busy at this time. Additionally, the server said if I wanted to wait, it would be 40 minutes! Doesn't make sense since other customers were also ordering and they were obviously able to fulfill that. It's horrible for a business to turn down orders because they're too busy, obviously not equipped to run a restaurant properly. I can no longer recommend this place. read more

The space is new, clean and busy. I have timed lunch at popular Japanese places in the 'burbs and think the tables turn every 30-40 minutes. So if you get there at 11:00, you'll get a seat and then the next tables open at 11:40 am then 12:20ish. This seemed to follow my theory. There were a lot of Japanese speaking customers as well. We ordered the spicy scallop hand roll which I enjoyed because of the different textures (crunchy cucumber, freshness of the scallop- not mushy, creaminess of the sauce, and pop of the tobiko.) The miso ramen was loaded with goodies. Lots of sautéed onions, bean sprouts, corn, half egg, green onions and bamboo shoots. The broth was rich and the pork was flavorful but not melt in your mouth. I did spice it up with the togarashi that is on every table. We also shared the lunch special which included ginger pork, fried chicken thigh (not kaarage) over cabbage with dressing, spinach gomae, rice and miso soup. The pork was delicious and tender, and I felt it was good quality pork. The chicken was crispy and tender -although I am obsessed with chicken kaarage and really wanted this- I ate it with pleasure. The menu is limited during lunch, but I get it since there are a lot of customers and the focused menu probably is best to keep everything moving and deliver quality food. We ordered quite a few hot appetizers and main dish such as seafood croquettes, pork skewers, hotate butter garlic seared baby scallops, salmon alburi, spicy miso ramen and hieratsu don and HiMamakachi Most impressive dish are pork skewers - very juicy and deep fried version just perfectly complement the meat but not making the meat dry! Hotate butter garlic seared baby scallops is my favorite. For the price of $10, I am having lots of scallops, spinach and mushroom. Why not?! The flavor is mind blowing! Highly recommended! Himakachi is good but I think it is a lil too burnt. If you are not a fishy person , not for you then. Hieratsu don - deep fried pork cutlet with egg omelette on top of the rice. Very filling and good portion for sharing! Like the pork skewers, the meat is very juicy and the egg omelette is well done! I bet you won't regret it. We ordered 'ABURI CHAR SIU' which is seared marinated pork belly slices. This thing was absolutely delicious! The best pork cha siu that I've ever had! Also we had the sashimi platter which was a chef's choice style, ENGAWA YUKKE: marinated spicy flounder fin, the TONKATSU RAMEN and 'ABURI BATERRA' which is seared, cured marinated mackerel pressed box sushi. AMAZING. I am a foodie and I have tasted various Japanese food but this has been by far the best Japanese place in America I have been to. It's comparable to a Japanese restaurant in Japan. I was like OMG this is so freaking good. The noodles were also perfect just the way I liked it. It has a very umami and savory taste. It is so good. I can still taste it in my mouth as I write this and trust me my mouth is watering hahah Age takoyaki: It was also really good. It melted into my mouth as soon as I ate it. The taste wasn't as surprising as when I tasted the ramen but it was definitely a solid dish that you should get Sushi: it was very fresh. I kid you not, the salmon melted into my mouth. Ambiance: very nice. I thought it was cute and very Japanese like Service: service was really good. They greet you when you enter and when you leave. Overall, I couldn't recommend this place enough. We came, we saw, but couldn't conquer. I would give zero stars if I could. I came here with friends around 5:30pm (the restaurant's opening time) and waited with a crowd of people for the door to open. After a few minutes, a sassy employee or owner popped his head through the door and said they only had 6 tables and cannot accommodate everyone at once and some would have to wait. Then he asked if anyone had a reservation which no one did in the group. Right after that he said that they would only take customers in if each party paid at least $50 PER PERSON. It was absolutely ridiculous!! When the average dinner entree is between $20-30 it is unreasonable to expect each patron to have a meal worth $50. In addition, they should've better advertised this $50 per person policy through a sign on the window or on their website. Their website says $50 per person with a reservation but does not mention $50 just to walk in. I guess they got scared seeing a crowd of eager customers waiting. My friends and I immediately decided to not eat here and enjoyed a nice meal elsewhere. Thankfully we wasted only a few minutes and dodged a bullet with this place. Considering that there are so many other incredible Japanese restaurants in the area that provide wonderful customer service, I can assure you that you won't be missing out by skipping a place that clearly feels burdened by customers. read more

This place really serves the best Japanese Izakaya food in Chicago. We tried their okonomiyaki ($11), agedashi tofu ($6.50), chicken karaage ($7), hirekatsu ($14), and aburi battera sushi ($12). Everything was very delicious. We especially loved their okonomiyaki because they have eggs and yakisoba noodles in it. Their aburi battera sushi was special as well as they put shiso leaves in them giving them a nice refreshing taste and smell. They also have a good selection of alcohol: from sake, beer and wine. Came to Schaumburg for a work trip, found Torizen within walking distance of hotel. What a gem! Upon entry quickly noticed that almost all of the other guests were speaking Japanese, which seemed to bode well for an authentic experience...and I have to say Torizen exceeded expectations! Impeccably courteous and efficient service, dishes came out very quickly in succession. Chilled spinach salad with a sweet black sesame sauce was a novel and refreshing take on wilted greens. Crab croquette with cream and mushrooms was a combination of crispy fluffy texture and rich filling. And last and best was a special of the day, miso black cod, superbly flavorful, buttery, and flaky filet. For the quality/value of the food and service, the bill was surprisingly modest. We ventured here with my work team and at first entrance, we noticed that all the patrons dining were Japanese. Seeing this, I already had a good feeling that the got would be good. We say down and ordered, mind you, this was during lunch. They provided us with a lunch meal menu. They had a few soups (ramen) on the menu. With each of the orders, you can choose from several making rolls. You can also order bento boxes which are fairly priced. On the back of the menu, they had an array of rice bowl dishes. I ordered the Hirekatsu Ju which is fried pork tenderloin over rice. It also is topped with egg and onions. Let me tell you, it was mouth watering delicious! Every bite I took had tons of flavor and ample juiciness to the pork. All my colleagues had a similar response with their ramen they ordered but one distinction was that they believed that the spices were just right... Not too much spices. Since this literally in the strip mall across Kitikata, this place has stiff competition and to be honest, if Kitikata didn't have a ridiculously long line, I'd prefer going there instead. This is a great option though if you're in the area and don't want to wait a half hour or more to get a group of 5 seated and wanting don't good Japanese food. read more

The amount of ground pork was not generous, esp at 15 plus a bowl. I also tried the tofu in aged soy sauce. While the tofu is fried, the soy sauce broth is not on the side, so by the time it is cool enough to sink your teeth into the super soft tofu, much of the crunch from the batter is soft I would like to try their sushi and the curry katsu in the next visits. We stumbled across this Japanese Ramen restaurant, this location used to be a Korean restaurant. We've came again at least four times and brought friends after our first visit within a month. The food is really fresh and has a lot of flavor. The fried chicken is really juicy and flavorful. They serve it with lemon and some mayo, it's amazing. My friends and I just finished eating and still had our wine to drink. Overall, it's very good. But it depends on what "style" Ramen you enjoy. This is Sapporo style. The broth seems darker, the noodles a bit more toothy than Hakata, or Tonkatsu Ramen (which is my personal favorite). Again, it's a personal preference. The Ramen here is above average. I was disappointed by the Chicken Karage. While it was light and not greasy, it was also rather bland. They batter and deep fry chicken thigh meat. The quality is good, but other Chicken Karage I've had has been more flavorful. I think other restaurants marinate the chicken. The Buta Bara Yakitori was excellent. These were thick slices of pork belly grilled on a skewer, and seasoned with salt. You can order these with a teriyaki sauce too. The pork was tender and juicy. I highly recommend these as a side or an appetizer. Service was excellent. The restaurant was clean and crowded for a weeknight. I'll be back for more. And I want to try their sushi too! read more

We got the marinated wasabi octopus to start. Looks scary, but so yummy. The sushi rolls were amazing. A lot of sushi places make spicy tuna by just putting spicy Mayo onto. They do not do this and the tuna is marinated making it so much better. The miso soup in my bento box had so much tofu and seaweed it was delicious. My bento box came with sooooo much food! My dad and I came here for lunch on a Saturday and we really enjoyed it. We ordered Age Shumai as an appetizer and two Spicy Miso Ramens with meat.
