I'm so glad we stopped over at Torizen in Schaumburg. Service was good. We got seated quickly in a quiet area in a book-like setting. Dishes were tasty, and an ice cold beer was perfect. I love the mixture of ceramic wear that comes with the various dishes. I tend to order the classics like Tonkatsu, Agedashi Tofu, or Croquettes.

It's been quite a few years since my last updated review of this place and I have been here several times both for lunch or dinner during that time in between. However, my most recent visit came in for dinner and I just had to finally update this post because throughout all of these visits, this place is so amazingly consistent in the food quality in the portions and in the incredible Japanese hospitable service. This is truly authentic legitimate food. And it's great to see the menu over the years really evolved as well as expand. This is a real go to, and I am so glad that they're here and not too far away and this is truly a great Japanese cultural feast and taste for the mouth!

The restaurant is typically packed during prime dinner time, even on weekdays. The atmosphere and menu lend themselves to an authentic Japanese restaurant experience. Large bottle of Asahi beer $10 Daikon Salad $10 - Julienne cut daikon radish topped with bonito flakes and nori, refreshing salad, the table's favorite dish. Sasami Mentai $4 - One chicken skewer, chicken was dry, wouldn't reorder. Atsuage Tofu (3 pieces) $5 - This tofu is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Hirekatsu Don $19 - Deep fried, breaded pork tenderloin egg omelette over rice, served with a side of miso soup. Good flavor, loaded with cooked onions. Niku Udon $17 - Tasty broth. Took the wife here for her birthday, and she loved it! The food and service were very good! The waiter and waitress were very tentative; they took good care of us. The ambiance was typical Japanese izakaya pub-style restaurant. Normally, this restaurant is pretty busy, so make a reservation beforehand if you're hanging out with friends or going on a date. In all, our experience was a wonderful date night for her birthday, and as long as she's happy, it was a wonderful experience for us both, so we will definitely be returning to this restaurant in the future. A big thank you to Torizen staff for that!

I don't want to be like the typical American reviewer claiming that everything is "authentic" but I was pleased to hear the servers speaking Japanese. That's a step up from some of the other places where they have non Japanese employees working there. We were a group of 7 with no reservation. We had to get two separate tables. I'm not sure why since it was not busy. Our table ordered a bunch of appetizers to share and then we got our open entrees. Service was good and friendly. Some of the items were pricey for what you get. For the value, it's about a 3.5 in my book. I know other Japanese places that give you more food for your buck. -okonomi fries 5 - crispy fries with the yummy sauces on top. -softshell crab karaage 4 - I recommend skipping. You don't get a lot for $18. -tori karaage 4 - $9 for such a small portion. I got more pieces at other places. -kani cream croquette 4 - it was very tasty but I don't think the price should be $10 for 2 pieces. -hirekatsu don 5 - breaded pork tenderloin was crispy and moist. It wasn't soggy. Ample portions.

Love this restaurant so much! The staff is so helpful and kind--as a family with littles, we appreciate it whenever we're taken care of in a way that makes it seem like we're really welcome there and not being rushed out because we have kids. It expanded since we'd last been there too! There's so much seating, whether at the sushi bar, or tables. We didn't have a reservation and they seated us immediately. Just FYI they do have a sign that states non-reservation guests have 1.5 hours to finish their meal. What we got: Potato salad - This was a sleeper surprise! There's so much umami to it, and it has bacon and cod roe in it, which was a twist. The taro chips were so fun too--light and crispy. Cucumber salad - This was fun. The dip for it was unique. I think there was fermented bean paste in it to give it this rich, earthiness, but also something briny. I know it sounds weird, but paired with a refreshing cucumber was really nice. Black cod - Anytime we see black cod, we get it. Especially at a Japanese restaurant. It's so tender, so juicy, but like a plump flakiness and just the right amount of char for contrast in texture. Boiled spinach with black sesame - This was tasty. The sweetness of the black sesame was different, but in a good way. Karaage - How did they get their chicken so juicy? Karaage seems like a boring staple, but this is so good here. I honestly think it's the best I've had in the area. Pork bone broth ramen - Solid staple. Our kids always love noodle soup. And at first neither wanted to try. But once they did, they couldn't get enough. The broth is so rich and creamy. The toppings are perfectly paired. The char siu is tender, the woodear is a fun texture changeup, the noodles have a nice chew. Everything was just well balanced; not too salty, not too heavy, just the perfect comfort bowl of ramen.

What I liked the most from this restaurant was their fried pork cutlet--it was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and had no porky smell at all. The grilled chicken skin and beef tongue were also quite good. I would come back again when I get the chance.

I was looking for a legit Japanese place to have a quick weekday lunch and I'm glad I chose this spot. This is a no frills, traditional-looking Japanese restaurant. The lunch menu was simple and I chose the tendon. The tempura was made fresh to order, the batter was perfect and so was the sweet sauce they drizzled on it. I wish I lived closer so I can try other items, but I was pleased with what I ordered. I highly recommend this spot if you are looking for traditional Japanese food.

Came in on Monday 8pm for dinner and did not expect there to be a 20-30 minute wait, but it was worth it! I tried many more dishes this time and it was a phenomenal dinner experience... everything was delicious. The fish with natto, ika + uni handroll, sashimi platter and soft shell crab tempura was out of this world delicious and worth every penny! Tonkatsu dinner was good too, but hard to top the Michelin star tonkatsu meal in Kumamoto. Also the rice was overcooked and the miso soup was overly salty. Torizen is a great place to visit if you're feeling those post-Japan trip blues!

I went to Torizen with my sister and her husband last weekend for dinner. It was my second time visiting and it was another blissful belly experience for me. The service and ambiance was excellent as usual. We ordered Gomaae which is spinach with a lightly sweet black seasme sauce. The Nasu Miso eggplant side dish is good and savory. Zasai tofu has a melt in your mouth texture. Butabara Kushiyaki has a good size of grilled pork in skewers with a nice savory sauce. Sashimi dinner has a nice selection of fish with rice and miso soup. Will definitely come back to try more on their menu.

The chicken karage and ton katsu here is the best Ive had in the Chicagoland area. The atmosphere of the place makes you feel like you're in an authentic Japanese restaurant and service is pretty good. I wish I got better pictures of the ramen and atmosphere but I will be back. Quality- the raw fish appetizer was well seasoned and the the chewy texture surprised me. Chicken and to katsu has a nice crunchy exterior with a nice touch of heat to it when wasabi is added. The inside is soft, juicy, and flavorful. The spicy miso ramen had some great broth. It was spicy/salty and creamy. Quantity- a pretty good amount of food came out for the price. It was well worth it Atmosphere- very nice homey feel. Lots of room at each booth. Service- fast responsive servers. Food came out fast too.

Meh, it was ok....maybe because we went for lunch . May be better for dinner since there's more options? Thought there would be a full menu for lunch as well, very limited options - basically ramen and appetizers to go with it. The ramen was ok, the hand rolls we chose were tasty. May go again to try to see if dinner is better since was recommended to this place by a local Japanese hairstylist. read more

My favorite place to go for ramen In Hoffman Estates! They are very authentic and once, they messed up a to-go order of mine, and called me as soon as they realized the mistake. The ONLY thing I don't like is how short the lunch menu is. The lunch experience seems a little rushed but it doesn't keep me from going. read more

Food is great but half the items are not worth the price. Worse thing is lately they upped the price on Yakitori. Dont be too greedy as I use to go here once a month with my family and now it is only 2 times a year as ther are other places around y Here to enjoy Yakitori style Japanese food. Would get 5 stars if they consider not to insult the wallet. read more

Torizen offers traditional Japanese cuisine and everything I order here has been consistently fresh, well prepared, tasty and totally clean and healthy! I've tried almost every ramen soup here and thankfully at dinner time you have the option of ordering half portions of ramen soup so you can have room for an appetizer or hand rolled sushi which is fresh and sweet tasting! The soups here are truly home made and lunch time can be just as fun with their bento box options just to break up your afternoon. This restaurant is quite popular on a Saturday evening so my best advice is to make advanced reservations on Friday and Saturday nights or be here for dinner at 5pm so you won't be waiting so long to be seated. Hot green tea is free and because it can sometimes be busy here the service here is still good but you may have to get their attention when they are taking care of a full restaurant of people. I live close to this privately owned restaurant and I've tried almost every single bento box on the menu served at lunch which is their best priced value. There are so many delicious options here and there are always daily specials in case you wish to switch things up and expand your palette. read more

This is the second time I had the chance to visit. The place is small and always packed, an instant sign that tells me how popular the food is. What I like the most about Torizen is their menu. It is simple and offers a handful of entrees to choose from--not including their daily lunch specials which are pointed out by the server. I find that when a menu has more than 5 pages back to back of photos and food to choose from it's overwhelming and the quality of food lacks a little bit of pride and presentation itself. That's not the case at Torizen, when the food is placed before you everything is neatly prepared and the cook's pride truly shows. Well done. read more

I am enjoying Torizen's Hirekatsu always. I like Japanese Donkatsu and well know about that because I leaved couple years in Japan long time ago. They're well keeping traditional cook style which is I like. I recommend this restaurant at least for the Hirekatus! :-) read more

This place is amazing! Went here to have some fresh and hot ramen. The place was packed and I was lucky I was able to find an available seat. Their place is cool and has a nice ambiance. Staff was surprisingly accommodating and helpful. It was literally my first time and their food was super great! I had their miso ramen. Full of flavor, the noodles was soft and everything in it was just so good not to mention it was hot. Sushi and their gyoza dumplings was delicious as well. I had a really great time in the place and I highly recommend them if you wanted an amazing and authentic Japanese restaurant read more

I go to there for lunch and also dinner with friends. I tried many of their menus and everything is good! They have ramen too. Their main ramen is miso ramen. It's good too! I put only 3 star because i don't have my favorite menu. So I don't feel like I wanna go a lot. But I don't regret after eating at Torizen. Everything is averagely good. read more

This restaurant is definitely one of the best and authentic Japanese restaurant I could find in the area. They have a huge menu full of different kinds of Japanese foodies. We went here for lunch and the place is kind of packed. We were about to decide to takeout our food but we saw an available table perfect for the three of us with my two friends including me and so we chose to stay. The staff in here is friendly and helpful and the service is quick. We ordered bunch of foods including takoyaki, gyoza, sashimi and tonkatsu for me and my friends ordered the miso ramen. The takoyaki is hot and it taste really good as well as the gyoza and the sashimi which are also fresh. I love my tonkatsu it is perfectly cooked, crispy, the pork is tender and the veggies taste fresh and of course it would not taste better without the sauce which really makes the dish fantastic. I highly recommend this place! read more

This place is very underrated, but it is one of the better (and authentic) Japanese food. I had the Ramen, and it is super-flavorful and not overly salty. A lot of places in the city have Miso ramen that is too salty, but this place does it right. The small, tapa-style appetizers are just right. If you have a craving for Japanese and don't feel like going to the city, you can't go wrong here. read more

Miso ramen is hearty and great that it's not so salty. The pork that it comes with is effing legit. Just really far from the city so I can't eat it so often. Service is fast. Restrooms are clean. Nice big parking lot. read more

This has to be one of the best restaurants I have been to for ramen. It is smaller storefront location so you might have to wait for table to open up. Well worth it! Pass...I would not return if I was starving. The service was horrible, we were not greeted or given water until 20 minutes of starring into blank space. The gyozas are frozen ones purchased from HMart, ours arrived still cold in the middle. The yakitori skewers were bland and tasteless I almost regret not bringing my own seasoning. Nothing about this place is authentic Japanese from the owners to the cooks. Another restaurant trying to cash in on the Ramen craze. I'll stick with my $1.79 packet of instant Udon and $4.99 6 pack of Mochi from HMart and the company of my two dogs any day than come back to this failed experiment. read more

My family and I went to their soft opening and tried their miso and shoyu ramens. As it stands, this place has the potential to be one of the top ramen restaurants in the Chicago area. I had the miso and my wife had the shoyu. Both were incredibly flavorful and delicious with deep flavors but not too greasy. We also tried the hand rolled California roll and was also quite good. The menu was small, but since this was a soft opening I'll forgive it. I can't wait to try them again once they are fully opened. read more

This is probably my least favorite place to eat ramen. The food is too salty and overprice. 12$ for too salty ramen, Absolutely NOT worth it. They put ground pork instead of adding another slice of pork. Noodle is just ok, slightly better than instant noodle. They focus more on making profit instead of customer satisfaction. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. If you are looking for a good place to eat ramen. Go somewhere else. Chicken karage is too oily. Nothing special. read more

Crowd of three different palettes left satisfied this evening. The gyoza was fresh and full of flavor with a perfect crisp. The California hand roll was as delight to the eyes and the taste buds. Tonkatsu ramen was good enough for palate number one to take home for a midnight snack. The portions were great. My miso ramen was quite tasty. Picky palette number three was impressed enough by the udon to finish his bowl. I am excited to see this place grow. read more

This was my first time eating a ramen dish, and easily my girlfriend's 25th. Both of us were insanely impressed in the dishes we ordered, the gyoza appetizer, and the service overall. The restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the food was amazing. For a Wednesday night, it was fairly busy, with a few tables full of people, but it wasn't crowded and we were seated immediately upon arriving. Absolutely amazing food & staff, absolutely coming by again. read more

The Torizen in Japanese meaning is a restaurant devoted to fowl dishes. Is this place a ramen shop or yakitori shop (skewered chicken)? There are wooden Ramen noodle stacking trays occupied dining bar table.It is not only bad behavior but also unsanitary. It looks like a cheap ramen shop. I'm unable to get it what owner chef would like to be. I did not see the homemade foods from scratch. This place definitely is not for "foodies"! I had ordered a chef's choice course menu. 1, Marinated-on-the-spot firefly squid You can buy better one Japanese grocery store. 2, The Sashimi plate came with a spot prawn and four slice of scallop. Deep fried prawn head was not crispy. defrosted stuff. 3, Broiled meat plate one of each: skewered chicken, skewered beef tongue, chicken wing It looks like broil temperature was not high enough and no right searing (meaning no crispy outer layer). I had one bite each on firefly squid and slice of scallop then I put down chop stick and asked a check for leaving. I did not touch at all broiled meat plate. When I was leaving from bar counter some said, thank you but no one ask me about left over foods. At least eight people working and running all over but no one managing at all. It was a very disappointed visit. read more

Reliably good Japanese food in as intimate an atmosphere as you could hope for in a strip mall. If it was slightly more cramped, I'd feel like I was actually in Japan. Definitely the best yakiniku I've had in the northwest suburbs, and the small plates they have really make this a nice place to for some drinks and light food. They have a menu of specials that always keep new options available. This place always seems busy, and for good reason. read more

I have known Maru for many years at Daruma and always knew he was a great Japanese Chef. He creates very distinct authentic japanes dishes and has a creative flair that compliments his great personality. He is dedicated to freshness, Quality and Authenticity. Americans and Japanese can feel comfortable here. I look forward to him expanding his resturant and adding a sushi bar. As all ways his fish is fresh and the broth is very real and flavorful. The owner has been in the restauant field for 25 years and had a dream of owning a restaurant someday. Finally the dream has come true in Torizen. Tori stands for bird (since the business started in the year of the fowl) Zen means "meal" which describes the comfort style cooking you can experience at our casual restaurant.

We also got our VIP lanyards and our package came with taking 2 photos! They didn't open the doors to the arena until approximately 1:00 pm. They have an area just outside of the arena where you can order drinks from the bar, buy souvenirs, watch the horses eat, etc. Once the arena opened we were seated in table number 3 (which is actually the first row). For food we had a tomato basil soup, garlic bread, a very large chicken, and corn on the Cobb. With the Queen package you also get a slice of cake. I had the side salad with Italian dressing. The server indicated all dressings were GF. He said everything would be safe for me. My food was delicious. My friend had the GF chicken Alfredo. She said the pasta was really good. They have a few GF options for dessert - we opted for the GF chocolate cake. The manager also came by a few times to check in on us and gave us a $25 voucher for next time. Would highly recommend this place.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Torizen and it was truly an amazing experience! The restaurant is located in a convenient area and was easy to find. Upon entering, I was struck by how wide the restaurant was. It had a spacious and open layout, with plenty of room to move around and lots of natural light coming in from the large windows. Now let's talk about the food. Torizen is known for its incredible ramen and it did not disappoint! I had the tonkatsu ramen and it was hands-down one of the best bowls of ramen I've ever had. The broth was rich and flavorful, with tender slices of pork and perfectly cooked noodles. It was so good that I wanted to order another bowl! But the ramen wasn't the only thing that was delicious. I also tried the chicken karaage, which was crispy and flavorful, and the gyoza, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The service at Torizen was also excellent. Our server was friendly and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Overall, I would highly recommend Torizen to anyone looking for amazing ramen and delicious Japanese cuisine. I wish I could give 0 star. Server complaint about tipping. Was expecting 20%tip? I don't think they can ask about how customers tipped or how much they can leave for tips. So rude ~~~~~ Owners reply: "Hi, thank you for your review, our restaurant always tries to better our service so whenever our customers leave a tip less than 10%, we always ask if anything was wrong. Sorry for any inconvenience my server provided, please let me know of any problems next time. Thank You. Sincerely, Owner Maro" By Marketing wise you can ask about how was the service, Was everything OK?... Not to follow the customer to the parking lot and asking about tips and saying "Not Acceptable"? How rude this server is, you need more serious education how to approach to your customers for better services. read more

Pre covid Lunch review from January, last lunch orders at 1:45, closes at 2. Nice small quiet getaway in Schaumburg, non descript strip location near corner of Golf & Roselle. Had the egg/chicken thigh/shitake omelette and much more a chicken dish than I was expecting, maybe a really small egg? okonomiyaki. Tea was hot, miso was not. Meh. $14 including tip, no leftovers. The Ramens looked a lot better. read more

Took forever for food to arrive and when it did the potstickers were cold and undercooked in the inside. Ordered the shoyu ramen, it was flavorless and the piece of pork I got was 99% fat. I doubt this place will stay in business... for slow service, undercooked food, and bland soup this is the place to be! read more

It's an uphill battle to locate authentic Japanese cuisine that's both affordable and reasonably priced outside the city, but this establishment is absolutely exceptional.
