No reservations, only walk-ins, but we were lucky to be seated by Byron who ensured our stay was pleasant. Located by Lake George in Sagamore resort, the setup is brilliant, whether you come here to eat, or just grab a drink! We got the New England Clam Chowder $16), Farmers Summer Salad ($22), and Blackened Fish Tacos ($23) to share. Food was fresh, and the salad was refreshing! Modello on tap went down easy with tacos for our table. Excellent service, perfect set-up, and welcoming staff makes it an easy choice for a quick snack or meal when visiting Lake George!

The poor service is factored into the score, but there's no reason to rehash every detail. We started with the mussels which were exceptional. The saucy broth they are served in is delicious. Unfortunately it's served with not nearly enough bread, and if you ask for more you will be charged (without being told). Our mains were a lobster roll and the steak salad. I am not a good judge of lobster, but it was "delicious." My steak salad did not arrive as ordered. The steak was overcooked (still tender, but certainly not medium-rare) and it was doused in dressing (which I had asked for on the side). The only reason to eat here is for the lake views. You are truly right on the lake. You're paying through the nose for that view because the food is just ok.

We ordered the Arugula Roasted Beet salad. The arugula was super fresh and good, however, it overpowered the beets which were thin and underrepresented. We also enjoyed a shrimp cocktail which was very good. For mains we had the roasted duck breast and the braised short ribs. The duck breast was a bit more well done than we normally have preferred, but was delicious, tender and moist. The short ribs were melt-in-your mouth perfect. We both accompanied the mains with a glass of red wine (one of the Hout-Plaisance and one of the Pessac Leognan). For desert we tried the carrot cake and the peanut butter pie. The carrot cake was good but the peanut butter pie was heavenly. In all a very well prepared dinner. However, we expected more creativity from the chef compared to other meals we have enjoyed in the region. Pricing was on the high side.

I said you browse; I'll stand out here in the shade. Then I spied the sign for Chateau on the Lake, which said they were open for Happy Hour between 2:00pm and 5:00pm. So, I sauntered down Allens Alley towards the Chateau. Place was empty, except for the bartender. I announced I was here for Happy Hour, but was informed it's not really a Happy Hour, it's just that bar is open for business. Okay, I'll have a Heineken ($8). Then I went out back, sat in the shade, enjoyed my beer, looked at beautiful Lake George, and waited for the wife to call and say she was done browsing.

I had the frozen huckleberry lemonade adult drink special which was very tasty, although a bit challenging to drink for a bit (it was too frozen). My son got the chicken nuggies with fries. It came out hot and fries were crispy. Actually everything came out super fast as they had just opened and maybe they weren't too busy. I ordered the pretzel sticks with queso. Similar to my brother who got the nachos, there were diminishing returns in that it was better while it was warm and while the texture of the cheese was better. The pretzels were very salty. My sister-in-law enjoyed her chicken sandwich. The clam chowder and the steamed clams were fantastic. I'd highly recommend the soup and the shrimp dish that my wife had also wasn't bad. The cold lobster roll for $35 was not worth it in my opinion as it was more of a lobster salad. The view is fantastic here and the vibes are pretty good so overall a worthwhile stop if you are in the lake George region. But it is important to keep in mind that this on the nicer side and prices are correspondingly higher.

We ordered the Clam Chowder, Blackened Mahi Mahi, and the Seafood Scampi. The clam chowder and mahi mahi were decent--not amazing, but not bad either. The seafood scampi, however, was very bland and lacked the flavor I expected, especially for the price. One of the main reasons we chose this restaurant was to enjoy the view of the lake. Before being seated, we were told we would have a table right by the water. That didn't happen. Later, we noticed a lakeside table open up and asked if we could move, but was denied. The service also left a lot to be desired. Our waitress checked on us only once shortly after the food arrived. After that she essentially disappeared until it was time to hand the bill. Meanwhile, we watched her regularly check in on other tables. Both of our water glasses sat empty for quite a while, and no one came by to offer refills or see how everything was. I don't know what it was but looking back, I was too generous even tipping her at all! Even an average Chinese buffet server gives better service! There's no way they'll see me again. I regret giving them my money.

One entree was the crab cake, which was mostly filler and not crab, and came out so cold it was inedible. The second was the Baja fish tacos, which were cold and chewy (we also ordered them with fries which we never got). When the waiter came to check on how we were doing we let him know we were unhappy and he said he would get a manager, which he never did, and just brought the check. We asked for the manager to come over & he didn't apologize or offer a solution to rectify the situation he just kept saying "I hear you, I understand". Finally, when we asked him what was going to be done about the situation he said "I'll take half off of the bill", so we handed him the credit card with the original bill. He came back, gave us back our card and the new bill. The new bill did not have half taken off, it had half taken off of the two entrees we had an issue with. As we got up, the waiter came running over to say "we didn't run your card that's just the new bill". Overall, the food wasn't good but the service and management is what was worse. The manager was very dismissive and not helpful at all. I would steer clear of this restaurant at all costs !

The evening got off to a great start with Fabian taking care of our table. He was the kind of server every restaurant hopes to have. Easy to talk to, attentive, and knowledgeable when we had questions about the menu. For appetizers, we went with the Hand Rolled Polpette, Risotto all'Astice e Gamberi, and the Crispy Mozzarella Tasting. The risotto was probably the favorite at our table, although the meatballs were a close second. For entrees, the Chicken Saltimbocca was excellent, the halibut was fresh and cooked perfectly, and the veal chop was easily one of the best dishes of the night. What nobody expected was that the kids' meals would be so great. All three children ordered the kids' steak, and every one of them was cooked beautifully. Their steaks were better than the steak I had the previous night at Tavern on the Lake, even though that one cost about 3x as much. Between the food, the service, and the setting overlooking Lake George, dinner ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. We'll definitely make a point of coming back next time.

Even though our table appeared ready, we were asked to wait. But they were very friendly. It would have been nice to be seated and simply advised that the server might need a few minutes, especially since all of the seating outside the restaurant was wet from the rain. Once seated on the patio, the atmosphere was pleasant and the food was largely enjoyable. Our server was friendly, but he seemed rushed throughout the evening. My impression was that the restaurant may have been short-staffed, as he was constantly moving and difficult to flag down when we needed something. The food was the highlight of the meal (except the cheesy garlic bread, it needed to be toasted). I loved the vodka pasta, which was rich and flavorful. My husband enjoyed the flavor of the osso buco, although he felt it was somewhat dry and overcooked. My son absolutely loved the ravioli and declared it his favorite part of the evening. Unfortunately, service continued to be a challenge. We wanted to order dessert, but despite several attempts, we couldn't get our server's attention. Eventually, the check arrived before we ever had the opportunity to ask about dessert, which left us feeling rushed and a little disappointed. Overall, there were definitely positives, particularly the food and the patio setting. However, with so many excellent dining options in the area, the inattentive service makes it hard to say we would have returned during this trip. We'd be willing to give Cate's another chance on a future visit, but we're hoping for a more attentive and relaxed dining experience next time.

There were 20 of us celebrating together, and the restaurant seated us at two tables. My husband ordered 20 shots to celebrate. Shortly after they were served, we discovered that the shots were full of fruit flies. A few people had already consumed their shots before we noticed, while most of us were understandably disgusted. We immediately brought the problem to the attention of the waitstaff. They acknowledged what had happened, but no reimbursement or adjustment was offered for the shots. I later called the manager myself. She told me she was "appalled" and said she needed to speak with the bartender and waitstaff. I completely understood that she would want to investigate, but I never heard back from her. I called twice afterward and still received no response. In my opinion, the obvious and appropriate resolution would have been to immediately remove the 20 shots from our bill. Instead, nothing was done. The lack of follow-up from management was just as disappointing as the original incident. Unfortunately, the food was also a major disappointment. Five of us ordered the Pasta Bolognese, and none of us were able to eat it because we found it to be terrible. That was especially disappointing for a group of 20 dining together. We come to Lake George every year, and this experience has completely changed our opinion of Cates. When something this serious happens, I believe a good restaurant should take responsibility, make it right, and follow up with the customer. That simply did not happen here. Thoroughly disappointed. None of us will be returning to Cates Italian Garden Restaurant.
