I've been to Tops Diner quite a few times, and my past visits were always pretty good. Unfortunately, this recent experience completely changed my mind. During a previous visit, we were charged for a dish we never ordered. We didn't notice until after we left, so we actually had to drive all the way back to get it sorted out. The manager refunded us and told us to mention the mix-up next time so they could buy us a complimentary drink. When we returned this week, we explained the situation. It took the staff a surprisingly long time to figure out what was going on, and what bugged me was that nobody even asked for a name, phone number, receipt, or any kind of info to verify the story. The whole interaction made us feel incredibly awkward, like they just assumed we were trying to scam them for a free drink. Eventually, they brought the drink, but things got even weirder. The server dropped it off in a massive rush, didn't say a single word, spilled some of it all over the table, and just walked away immediately. I honestly have no idea what happened or if we somehow offended him, but it felt completely uncalled for and rude. The atmosphere is still nice and the food is fine, but nothing is good enough to make up for that level of poor service. Mistakes happen--it's how you handle them that matters. Between the initial billing error, the time wasted driving back to fix it, and the attitude we got on this visit, I don't see myself coming back. I came for breakfast with some friends on a Saturday morning and with no reservation we were seated within 10 minutes which was amazing. I ordered the ube matcha iced latte and it was sooooo delicious! I'll definitely be getting that regularly. Our server was super friendly and attentive and all of the food was sooooo good. We were looking to for a place to eat in Harrison and everyone had said to eat at Tops Diner so we decided to try it out. We did not make a reservation and on a Tuesday afternoon there was a 30-min wait. We put out name down and waited about 15 mins and then got a table. Inside the diner looked really nice and not like a diner at all. The booths were clean snd the ambiance very nice. We both ordered Sammie which were sandwiches that came with pickle and coleslaw and you could add fries as extra. My friend got the pastrami and I got the grilled cheese. Both sandwiches were really good in terms of flavor and quantity. Both sandwiches came with a standard pickle as well as coleslaw; the coleslaw tasted homemade and did not have any mayo and was really good. I dined here several times over the years. I first dined here when I had to go to Newark airport to take care of some business, we wanted to get a bite to eat so we looked up restaurants and this came up. When you arrive at Tops diner the first thing you think is this is not a diner. They really need to change their name because it does not give Diner vibes! You have to make a reservation well correction you don't have to make a reservation, I suggest you make a reservation because they are so popular just can't walk in. It depends on when you walk in you may get in. Lol. I mean whenever I go near East Newark I will circle around and come to Tops. So they have a parking lot but like any place is very popular in the food is good. The parking lot stay packed. You may have to drive around a little because there's two parking lots on each side of the building. On the one side of the building, they do have a takeout entrance which you can sit in or you can go in there to wait if you are on the list for reservations. their takeout is awesome. I've done that too. Atmosphere: it is very loud because it's good for groups so everyone's just talking and enjoying their food so it can be very loud in there. I love the music that they play. It's great. It's bright cherry decorated very nicely. Service: the workers are so nice and pleasant and very engaging. This helps with your dining experience. They are very tentative and they will address any concern. You have very quickly and try to make it right. This last time I went there about almost 2 weeks ago Fernando was my server and he was so accommodating. I mean, I have a lot of request when I dine out and I mean he did it with a smile. He did not make me feel like I was annoying him, and that meant a lot to me. I also spoke to the manager. I cannot remember her name, but she also was very nice. I had the Rasta pasta and I had I believe some Prosecco I believe and my drink was good, but let's talk about this Rasta pasta; It was so creamy , flavorful and it didn't even have enough kick to me because I'm a spicy person, but it has a light kick. don't think if you see any spiciness it's gonna be too much but then again, you can't ask me about a spice level because I have a high tolerance for heat. It was very tasty. I also ordered a side of sourdough and that was an extra charge. They do not bring bread to the table. I mean these people serve water in a carafe. Nice carafe. What diner does that? Tops!!!! I also took home some corn beef hash you get eggs and potatoes and I forgot to mention that the portions are so big you can take away. The corned beef hash was just OK as well. It was not nasty. I have to say that I've never had a bad meal from Tops. Only request I have is that they build a Tops just like that one in East Newark, but in Philadelphia. I would be so happy but until they do, I think I am going to take a trip at least once a month, that's how much I enjoy them. I've taken family and friends here and thank you they were impressed. They enjoyed it and I can't even mention that I'm in New Jersey because the first thing my family ask is are you near Top? I'm going to take the hour and a half to hour & 45 minute drive once a month that's how much I enjoy this place!! oh I forgot to mention they do have a bar that you can sit at. The drinks are good. I mean, they even have a barista area and as you walk to the takeout side, I think it's called the blue room. If you look to your right, you can see them baking and making things in the back. There's a big glass window. They also had a vending machine with wine and things like that that you can get out of the machine. How cool!!! Celebrated my daughter's graduation here and had an absolutely amazing experience. The food, drinks, and atmosphere were all excellent, but the biggest highlight of the night was our server, Terrance. I've eaten everywhere from dive bars to Michelin-star restaurants, and Terrance provided some of the best service I've experienced anywhere. He knew the entire menu without looking once, handled food allergies professionally, made outstanding recommendations, and made our family feel welcomed and comfortable the entire evening. The drink combinations were incredible, the hospitality was genuine, and we never once felt rushed despite spending quality time celebrating together. It honestly felt like being hosted by family while enjoying elevated dining. If you visit this place and Terrance is working, do yourself a favor and request his section. Ordered: half chicken and waffle - $26, waffle was pretty good, fried chicken was quite bland and not crispy enough avocado toast - portion was very good for a $10 mango smoothie - $12? frozen mango was used for sure, it was not blend well and lot of ice was used, I had a brain frost after taking a sip bottled water - $7 Service was average, nothing exceptional and nothing wrong. Service at the lunch counter was awesome, and fast. I finished with a strawberry shake. The only reasons I can't 5 star this place is because 1. The brisket was a bit dry. 2. Well that's disappointing. Tops used to be spectacular. Now? I'd sooner set a hundred dollar bill on fire than go back. Pancakes were a salt lick. Out of 4 separate entirely different items. Waiter was rude beyond measure. While the portions are big it's sloppy, salty, and feels like cafeteria food. When tops was a diner it was great, this is lipstick on a pig right before you put it to pasture, on the subject...bacon was good but 4 teeny jimmy dean sausages aren't diner fare...I've microwaved better frozen food. 100 for 3 people isn't a lot but for what we got?
