Good food and service. But know two things before going: It is cash only and it is a smoking bar. If you have cash on you and don't mind someone smoking, then you can have an enjoyable meal here. They do have a decent ventilation system so the gentleman smoking down the bar from where I was seated wasn't interfering with my meal. I did notice the scent of smoke immediately upon entering, but it didn't seem overpowering to me. (I have walked out of some places just because I didn't want to smell like smoke!) Okay, so I stopped in for lunch and was greeted and took a spot at the bar: Fairly comfortable seating with almost enough leg room to sit straight. I was looking over the daily lunch items when the bartender/waitress mentioned the special Chicken Salad Sandwich they had that day. It came with my choice of side (slaw). So, I went with that and waited. After a short time, I heard a bell ding and soon my meal was brought out. Nothing fancy though it was served on a real plate. The white bread sandwich was buttered (maybe lightly grilled) and the buttery taste of the bread paired perfectly with the chicken salad (with a bit of lettuce and tomato). This was good enough it should be on the everyday menu! The slaw was a creamy style that was chilled and refreshing, not too tart, not too sweet. Another good choice. Visited the Top Notch during the evening last week and it is under new ownership. You can not tell any major changes good or bad under the new owners who also own Ace's and End Zone in Lafayette. The crowd was pleasant and the beer was cold. The tenderloin and onion rings were good, however, the new owners have carried over what we were told is a 'tradition' at the Top Notch. In their fryers they put orange dye/food coloring so that the onion rings and tenderloins do not come out brown. They come out orange. Maybe this is a tradition, but as an out of towner, it makes the sandwich tough to eat. I am a visual person (which is why I don't eat seafood) and the orange made it difficult. The flavor was good but the color made it tough. Service was good. The people were friendly and the food is good if you can get past the color. read more

Okay, so simply put. This place is A-W-E-S-O-M-E! Like beyond so. We were invited out one night in Indiana by Tylers friends and we were told "the place is kinda laid back, like a regulars only place" and we didn't really know what to expect especially when we walked in and there was a scattering of older people around the place. The first thing I noticed was no visa sign in the window, uh-oh. So we asked our friends and we found out they were CASH ONLY. I didn't see an ATM, so I braved the snow to go to the gas station on the corner, then their ATM had issues - and apparently nowhere in Indiana believes in cash back, so I figured I was SOL. Thankfully his friends were nice enough to spot us, so we did get to enjoy ourselves. I had a 7&7 which was yummy and on the recommendation of his friends we tried the chicken tenderloin sandwich (we didn't wanna be too pushy so we split one) first of all it was humongous - secondly delicious! I didn't want to share it in the end, and I wish we had the chance to go back so I could get one of my own - but alas, next time. Outstanding food, good cocktails, excellent service, small town atmosphere, well this place is simply top notch. I have not had a Breaded Tenderloin here, they were sold out on the evening of our visit, I've heard it is very good and it is obviously very popular. Our Fried Shrimp and Steak were very good, the Old Fashioned was right on, as mentioned the service is beyond excellent. A close friend told us about this place and said their steaks were the best. They only serve filet mignon on fridays and Saturdays... they allow smoking which is why they lost a star. The bartender made my drinks very well and the servers were very attentive and friendly. Their onion rings were good and pretty. We had mushrooms as well they were good. I loved my steak! If you don't like rare or medium then go somewhere who serves dry steak. Overall good experience and we will be back. read more

Their steaks are wonderful! Steaks that melt in your mouth, amazing fresh onion rings (not frozen, but made from real onions just for your order!!), and the best homemade bleu cheese dressing for your dinner salad. I've been going to the Top Notch since 1974, and I still enjoy it as much as the first time. They have a variety of hand-cut steaks (my favorite is the fillet mignon which comes in two sizes), excellent catfish in the shape of a fish (without the head) and frog legs. The "sirloin for two" hangs over the edge of the large plate. Dinners come with a perfectly done baked potato with your choice combination of four toppings (onion, cheese, butter, sour cream) and a dinner salad. The atmosphere is pretty much the same as the first time I visited - cozy, friendly, and a little noisy. Dinners are served Friday and Saturday nights only. Get there early, maybe around 5:00 to avoid a wait. On the other hand, the wait is never long and is very nice - put your name in with the bartender and tell 'em how many in your party, grab a seat at the bar, in the back room, or just stand and enjoy a drink and visit. They'll call your name or come and get you when your table is ready. Be sure to check out the cool placemat / menu's. One of the owners is an artist and draws them. Dinner is served until 9 pm, I think. Tables seat four, six or eight. Not a problem getting a wheelchair in the front door. During the week for lunch and dinner they have a good selection of bar food: hamburger, cheeseburger, economy burger (the BIG one), fish, tenderloin (breaded & un), really tasty fries and mushrooms. Lunches and non-Friday/Saturday nights they do carry-out. Full bar, good assortment of domestic beers, not much imported except for Corona & Heineken, and no small domestics. This is not the place to get wine or frou-frou drinks. Coke products at fountain and in cans. The old back bar is very nice. Two tv's above the bar usually have weather or sports, nice in case a big game is on or your date is really boring. This is consistently the best steak place anywhere around here. Unless you're a vegan, I'm pretty sure you will eat at the Top Notch again and again. read more

Been there since the new owners about 3 times now. Steak still as delicious as it was before. We always go there when we want a great steak dinner. Onion rings are still great. The mushrooms are better than before. Deep fried fresh mushrooms and they were awesome! Always a great meal. The big filet mignon is excellent!!!!! Filets usually do not have lots of flavor... Their beef is excellent and tender..... I live in CA and always look forward to come visit family and make it here for a filet on Friday or Saturday night... Everything is good.... Homemade battered Orings, frog legs, shrimp, pork cutlet... Even the economy burger, which is huge!!! I think I arrived in a Delorean. This bar is in a serious time wrinkle, circa about 1987, I think. Small selection of bottled beers (nothing local), small selection of liquors (nothing unusual)...but the service is friendly, the other patrons were not obnoxious...and the filet and krinkle cut fries were great. After a long weekend surrounded by family and turkey, we needed some real grown-up time...and some beef too. This cool small-town bar filled both bills. Holy mess does this place have a good filet! The best around Lafayette by far. Sad to say that I didn't try the frog legs, but the onion rings were yummy. Even the small order is a gigantic amount. I got there around 7 on a Saturday night and only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. Great servers and bartenders. Went for Taco Tuesday last night. Tacos are good and cold beer for sure. Place was rather busy and loud, only had 2 servers. Now to the point. There was a table 7 next to us and it seemed someone was maybe celebrating a birthday. There were lots of empty beer bottles at table and this customer had consumed at least 5 shots plus beer, Fireball of course. One person working in kitchen came out with 2 shots, one for customer and one for himself. Also a waitress brought him a shot and one for herself. Needless to say the customer kept getting louder and louder talking and every other word was the "F" word. We couldn't wait to get out of there. Said something to the waitress as we were leaving and she just smiled and shrugged her shoulders. So does this mean the new owners approve of there staff drinking while working? Nor not serve someone who has had to much to drink. Work in progress. Be a while before I return and it was my favorite place to patronize. read more

Disappointing first visit since new ownership has taken over. Did not have any Sirloins, the large Filet was not available and perhaps the most disappointing was the Baked Potato. They have changed the cheese blend and do not offer the ground onions. They have tried to dress it up a bit, but please keep the favorites that made it unique. read more

The steaks here are excellent, but be prepared to carry leftovers home. (I think the sirloin for two could easily feed a family of four. No joke.) I think steaks are a weekend affair, and the rest of the menu is available during the week. This is a small but surprisingly great steakhouse. The seating is first come first serve and you may be asked to share a table, but don't let that turn you off. The onion rings are plentiful and a 1/2 order will feed 3 easily, they are also lightly battered and crispy. We ordered the fillet and the NY Strip and could not believe the size for what we paid. The Strip was easily 2 1/2" thick and cooked to the correct temp. Excellent value and because it is in Brookston (just outside Lafayette) it was not overly crowded. Only thing I didn't like is that it is CASH OR CHECK only; however, there is a gas station acrosss the street with an ATM that DOES NOT charge fees for withdrawal. read more

Last time we were there they were looking to sell the place. Now,the place has new owners recently so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. If they keep the onion rings and beef as good as it was,that's good. The paper and plastic bowls,etc. have no place in a restaurant that has such good food. Smoking should NEVER be allowed in a restaurant,either. The shrimp were nothing special before,let's hope they improve on that,and get some killer desserts. Then we'll see. read more

Although I've lived in west Central Indiana for 7 decades, I'd never been to the Top Notch. (Haven't lived a sheltered life...) My wife had the small filet and I had the New York Strip. I've told several folks that this ample chunk of beef was probably better than any I've had at St. Elmo's, Ruth's Chris, Morton's, or any other upscale steak house. I ordered it rare, which is my custom, and it was juicy and tender as a steak could possibly be. We got a half order of their famous onion rings, and that probably would have fed 3-4 people. The baked potato was superb, and although my wife's salad was rather spartan, with virtually nothing but lettuce, (she doesn't eat dressing...) my coleslaw was as tasty as any I'd ever tried. I understand their sandwiches are excellent as well, and since we're living in Brookston temporarily while our new house is being built, we'll be back to try those! read more
