My first five star review was eight years ago when I started going to Top Modern Nail. I have had amazing service and great results every time. Their attention to hygiene and disinfecting is appreciated. My shellac polishes always last and it's the only way for my thin nails to grow without breaking I have now ventured into acrylic nails after I caved on holiday & got a 1st application/set in Maui...what a nightmare!!! Luckily when I got back Jenny corrected the thick & terribly shaped nails into a beautiful thin set that looked totally natural and my 3 fills since then were with Zoe and her work has been flawless. I am not gentle with my nails as my work includes maintenance work, but these nails are bulletproof . I'm even thinking to shape one tip like a screwdriver next time & I'm not kidding!!! read more

I went for a gel mani/regular pedi last week..I wanted to like this place, the nail tech was nice and my nails looked great after they finished but few days later, i noticed white spots appear on the gel nails. Not sure if that's something i did but i've never had that happen to me before? On top of that, the gel is now peeling off and it's only been about a week...usually i get at least two full weeks before chipping so im disappointed! read more

After I watched a nail tech "clean" the pedicure bowl next to me, I decided I won't be returning. They barely sprayed any disinfect on it and then immediately rinsed it out without even scrubbing the surface. I also had some issues with my hand polish application having bubbles in it as well as it being all over my cuticles. They ended up taking it all off and just doing a clear coat. My pedicure chipped two days later. They were nice people and it was cheap but I would not recommend going there. read more

I've gone to top modern a hand-full of times since moving to north van. My first experience was weird. At first the owner who was doing my manicure was lovely and kind, until she left to get my nail colour and saw me lightly itch the side of my nose that was grazed by a piece of my hair, which caused her to rudely snap at me, telling me not touch anything. Despite my apologies, she proceeded to be very rough and short with me after. I figured it may have been an off day and maybe an annoyance to her (there is a part of getting acrylics where you're not meant to touch anything before the colour goes on- and I just was unconsciously reacting to the itch). So I went back, decided to give it another go; and my findings are that no one is very friendly with me- which is okay in its own right- but they're very rough with me too, and when filing my nails, one girl in particular always cuts me. And yesterday when I went she filed the same spot over and over, cutting the skin under my nail until it bled. After I flinched continually, I turned my nail to see if it was bleeding when she sharply told me not to touch anything. She kept looking at the cut, but continuing to go over it still, and at no point did she acknowledge it to me, or apologize. Its a bit anxiety inducing knowing that the experience with getting my nails done is going to cause me pain in the moment and for a few days after, given the time the skin takes to heal, along with dealing with every day irritants- so I've decided not to go back. I've seen so many people who go there have much kinder experiences than I have- and maybe I am just very not liked there. But Ive always been very kind and respectful, so I'm not really sure why I've had this experience. But I've been told that pink magnolia is very good by a friend who also had bad experiences with top modern, so next time I will try there. read more

All the 4 and 5 star reviews are all good and well. If there is no issue, of course it is easy to be decent. Only when there is a conflict can we really see one's TRUE colours. I have been going here for long enough that I know who I most prefer to do my pedicures. In my experience I did not find Jenny as careful as Tina in polish application. When Jenny did my pedicure, both times it was a meh! Tina, always meticulous and careful. Last time I had a pedicure with Tina, there was a miscommunication and the colour applied was not the colour I chose. I wanted something green and got a navy blue instead. Within an hour, after being out in natural light, I called Jenny and we agreed that I would be charged the regular fee for a gel pedicure the next time I came in. Today, Jenny wanted to have a fight with me in front of everyone for the $18 difference between regular and gel polish. Really?! After 4 years of my business and leaving on average a $10 tip every time... Really?! Tina did my pedicure then Jenny told me that she would be doing my colour. Ah, no thanks! I told her that I wanted Tina to finish my pedicure... I really don't appreciate one person starting and another finishing. AND I did not trust her to do as good a job as Tina. Then she started talking about how she had to pay Tina if Tina were to apply my colour another rate? Pay Tina what? To add insult to injury, Jenny also seemed to insinuate that maybe I was lying?.. that I was just looking not to pay?! I could have sat there and eaten her sh*t but I insisted I wanted Tina to finish her work. Jenny then made a phone call to Kenny, who is about 10 times worse than she is, it's called matapang in our culture... this was all grossly unbelievable to me. After everything, Jenny went to hide in the back. She had no interest in resolving the issue in a civil manner, someone else with food still in his mouth came to take my payment. I told him that I wasn't going to tip Tina anything because Jenny was pretty disgustingly petty and that I would not be returning, that I would be writing a review online. I was charged for a gel pedicure despite Jenny telling me that I would be charged for a regular pedicure instead. It is not the $18 difference but for the principal as this is absolutely not the way I conduct myself in my own small business. To nickel and dime me, want to have a confrontation, and to not have the guts to come up to the counter and look me in the eye... this is the true character of this manager. I wonder from whom they are hiding funds when they don't charge you tax for paying cash. Is it from the owners that they may be hiding hundreds if not thousands of dollars a month or are they simply trying to hide this income from Revenue Canada? Best mani and pedi I've had in so long! I asked for an appointment on a Saturday and they were honest and said they were busy, instead if trying to fit me in which you find in many salons. Went in on a Sunday and the place was clean and bright. Went with a friend and we sat next to each other on nice leather massage chairs (3 in total). We had Kenny and Jenny and they were so sweet. Brought us tea and made sure we were comfortable. They both asked how we wanted our nails and cuticles cleaned. They listened and made sure we were happy. We did have to move to a mani table for our manis but we still sat next to each other. It was good to have the same person do both my feet and hands but it does take longer. We were there for an hour and half. Really detail oriented and my nails look amazing! Will defiantly go back!! $45 for mani and pedi. read more

Very impressed by this salon. I had my first experience there tonight, and this will be the only place I go to from now on. Factors that make them superior to the competition: Nail tech payed a lot of attention to detail, it was longer than the typical pedicure appt (I did not feel rushed to move from my massage chair) exceptional foot and leg massage, friendly smiling staff. I love this salon. I have been going here steadily for three years and have strayed a few times because of convenience (there was a salon by my work I would go to on occasion). Anyway I won't go anywhere else because they do the best job and their prices are very reasonably. Anywhere else I have been my gel colour always peels off, but not here. I can't count how many times I have called at the last minute and they go out of their way to find me a spot. The salon is also very clean and the energy is great. Jenny, Kenny and Henry are amazing and I will never go anywhere else. I took my 10 year old neice here to get her first pedicure and manicure and they made her experience a wonderful one. I brought 3 friends in for Mani Pedi's before lunch after seeing the good reviews here. I thought the service we received was very good except I had to wait for mine. They were friendly and very good to my friends which was great with me. We were there for two hours so certainly they didn't rush us like I have experienced in other shops but it was a little long as one of my guests had to forego on my planned lunch as she had to get to work. My friends seemed very pleased with their Mani Pedi's but mine were all peeled within the next few days. Too much housework I guess. ha! Oh well. It was a lot of fun. Really unfortunate that i had this experience because i did like everyone who worked there. Made a appointment last minute yesterday for some girl time and birthday nails. i myself wanted them to be done for my trip on Monday. Now i realize they squeezed us in. The gentleman doing my friends nails did a great job, the lady doing mine did not. She rushed, on one hand the colour doesn't even reach the cuticles, so it looks like it has been growing out. Being the first time i got Shellac nails i thought maybe that was okay..? showing others i was told it was definitely not and very noticeable. This morning i woke up and was brushing my hair and my thumb nail chipped, which didnt surprise me because i also was told it looked like the was more polish on the tips of the nails then anywhere else. So chipped after less then 24hr and at 38 dollars that is unacceptable. Called today to get it fixed, wouldn't accommodate me because i couldnt get there till 5 and thats when they close. I hate going to those nail salons that are real sweat shops and the employees never have time for breaks or decent pay. Second, I made an appt and I appreciate how they were honest re: if they could take me and when. Many salons double and triple book and then you end up waiting for your turn for ever.
