A previous review mentioned uncooked dough on the inside and burnt on the outside... same thing happened to me. But the bolos levedos are so darn good that I scraped out the uncooked part and ate the rest. But I'm not sure I'll chance buying them again. These would be so much better if they would reduce the baking temp and increase the baking time. read more

I recently purchased Tony's Bolos Levedos muffins and when I sliced the first one open, it was uncooked on the inside. I then sliced them all open, and none were cooked on the inside, so I had to throw them all away. Very disappointing! read more

I bought the raisin bolos levedos at OSJL and put in toaster ...I too could smell the dirt scent. This was the first time I've seen the raisin kind in A while.. Then before this A lot of the plain ones were burnt... and oddly shaped...did someone else take this place over...not the same quality as before.. threw them away...A shame... read more

I bought their Sweet Raisin Muffins at OSJL in Chicopee yesterday. I opened the plastic bag and it smelled like dirt. I used to love these muffins back in the 1990s. OSJL always carried them and their breads. I will never buy this product again. It even tasted like dirt that I just threw them out. This was awful. read more

Once i discovered these fabulous muffins i look for them at Ocean State Job lots which is where i usually find them. Just a warning for all us dieters that are counting points and calories. Get yourself a 15.00 scale from amazon and start weighing your food. These muffins are twice the size of what the bag is claiming so in reality they are double the calories. We have been buying the sweet bread with and without raisins for years at Odd Job Lot in Old Saybrook, CT. In the last year, though, every loaf is not sliced evenly. There is always a huge 1"+ wedge that needs to be be sliced by hand. Very annoying since it's a soft bread and doesn't slice evenly. Is there something wrong with your slicer? Also, yesterday, as I was eating a sandwich on the bread, I found an inch long piece of wood in my mouth. UGH! How did that get in the bread? Now I'm afraid to buy/eat this bread again since who knows what is in the bread. Do you a have Quality control department? I stop for bolos whenever I travel to the Cape. I like the raisin bolos best. Toast them and butter them up!

They have the best Portuguese muffins.I get them at Ocean State in Mansfield but they sell out fast.When I get them I buy 3or 4 and freeze some.I prefer the raisin but plain are just as good. read more

We love the muffins both plain and with raisins and also the raisin bread. Usually, we can find it at Ocean State in Meriden, CT, however, lately it has been hard to find. Hope it's only momentary. Only problem is that the raisin bread is usually only partially sliced and the last time we could get it, it was not in sliced even though the package was marked sliced. Hope they overcome whatever problems they are having with production and delivery. We miss their availability! read more

EVERYONE (and yes, I mean EVERYONE) who has ever tried Portuguese sweet bread in the entire history of the world loves it. If you don't then clearly you have never tried a bite or if you tried it and did not like it then you didn't have Tony's (or have the worst tastebuds ever and do not deserve to eat it). Sweet bread. Muffins. Small rolls. Truly authentic baking using what are probably centuries old recipes that were brought down from the mountain top by Moses along with those other tablets he had with him. Fresh. Made right there. And cheap. Get a loaf - one of the huge, soft, sweet, delicate gastronomic delights and toast it up or, better yet, make the best freaking french toast you have ever had. Rarely if ever do I rave about bread. I mean, why bother? But this is something that no one should go through life without having sampled at least once. To do so would be a life poorly lived. I have never lived within 300 miles of Fall River. But, I have family there, and every time we would go there, we would go to Tony's and get some sweet bread. For me, no trip to Fall River is complete without a trip to Tony's. The sweet bread is sooo good! It's much better than what you can get at a grocery store. Its even gotten to the point that when relatives go to Fall River, they bring back sweet bread from Tony's for those who didnt make the trip. I have had sweet bread brought to me in St. Louis, and I have brought it to with me to someone in Moscow, Russia. Why? Because it's just that good. Tony's sweetbreads and Bolos Levados are the best around! I've never been to the actual store in the 'Riv, but I pick up their brand of Portuguese breads at Job Lot or Price Rite here in Rhode Island. I grew up eating their breads and they are delicious! The loaf of sweet bread is quite possibly the best thing I've ever eaten, especially toasted with butter on it! And their Bolos Levados are MUCH better than the competition, with a signature, unique taste that makes me want to eat the whole bag. The competition doesn't have that taste! And, Tony's Bolos are much lower in calorie than the competition, which is a win-win for me! read more

When I was a young boy my VO would send me to this bakery to pick up some Portuguese breads. I could buy five for a buck back then, My Vo lived at 156 Eagle St so it was a short walk. Bread was HOT from the ovens. Got them home and ripped off a chunk and buttered the hell out of it and could not get it down fast enough. LOL For the good times in Fall River, MA. This is the store brand I usually look for related to sweet bread. Taste is consistant. The only thing is.... you have to check the dates, which is on the price label, if purchasing in a supermarket. Older ones are left on the shelves. My hubby recently purchased these massa buns, they were overcooked so didnt feel fresh and slightly burned on the bottom. (I had to educated him to check the dates, and how fresh they look before purchasing) for the next shopping round. Taste better if you cut it lengthwise and toast them. Price is @ 3.00 for 6 buns. During Easter, you can find them in the supermarkets, with an egg baked into the top of the breads...... if you like it like that. They sell shapes of loaves, big round panallas, bisquits, ect. in stores and at the bakery in Fall River. You can view through the back bakery door many racks cooling with the sweet breads.... and the aroma of fresh baked sweet bread. They offer free bread slicing also. Many times, there is a line (sometimes out the door). This is a famous Fall River sweet bread bakery. Attached is a pic of the recently purchased sweet breads. With the coronavirus still in full force, I wouldnt put much weight on how it was overcooked. Its usually very good! Normally I love Tony's Bakery Portuguese Raisin Muffins and look for them at local stores. Last week I bought two packages in a Brockton store and both packages were not cooked fully through. The center of the muffins were wet and doughy. I tried baking, then toasting them but that didn't work and I ended up tossing them out. I noticed that someone else also reported this when they purchased them in Southbridge. I am going to chalk this up to a bad batch and hope that Tony's does more testing at their facility in the future. In the past I would have gone with a 5 star rating and last week a 1 star so I am going with a 3 star. read more

A few months ago I purchased my usual Tony's Bakery Portuguese Raisin Muffins from Price Rite in Seekonk. They were literally raw inside so I called the bakery. They told me they were aware of the problem because of new bakers. Michelle Rio told me she would refund me. I have called her at least 6 times & no refund yet. I have been enjoying Tony's stuff for many years- muffins, rolls and bread. There is a Portuguese bakery in Ptown and although much of their stuff is good, Tony's to me is much better. Tonight I went to Stop and Shop in Dennis on the Cape and they didn't have Tony's products at their usual location on their shelf. This happened about a month ago and I was told there was a death in the family in Portugal and they closed down the plant. A couple of weeks ago their products came back, but now this. I grew up eating this stuff because of my uncle, but it is one of the best things I've ever had. That might sound weird because it's just bread.. but it's just soooo good! He used to take a trip up every year and bring back loads of this stuff for me and my sister. Now I'm taking the trips up every year and bringing back loads for myself.. and I'm coming from Jersey. It's great plain and by itself, or my favorite way is to slice it up, butter it and fry it in the pan to toast just a bit and have it for breakfast. YUMMM! I've been coming to the Falmouth area at Cape for over 65 years from NJ and now MD. When I discovered Tony's Portuguese muffins, my mouth just dropped..Wow ..so delicious! So everytime I come I look for them, can't always find them, picked up other Portuguese muffins that looked similar. Nope don't fall for the look alikes. Don't believe the Google hits (e.g., YP.com) that say they're closed -- if they are, they're STILL making the best Portuguese Sweet Rolls and Muffins around. We ate 2 bags of them on vacation (Eastham, Cape Cod) the last week of Sept (2013), and brought 4 home with us and froze them. Contemplating ordering more when we run out and having them shipped. Better than the others we found from Tavares Bakery. Tony's seals their bags tight, Tavares just ties them loosely: as a result, the ones from Tavares get stale on the grocer's shelf, the ones from Tony's stay fresh. This year, for the first time, we bought some of the muffins as well as the rolls -- make English Muffins seem like white bread. Lightly sweet, slightly denser, tighter structure. If you have to live on bread alone, these are the breads to have on hand. read more
