What a terrific local gem!! There was a line here when we stopped for breakfast but it moved quickly. Having an employee (Victor) assist people kept things moving and he added a friendly personal touch. I loved my salmon and cream cheese bagel and my mom liked her egg sandwich and cheese danish. We got a slice of the focaccia pizza to share for later and the honey/pepperoni was incredible! I also liked my hot golden (ginger and tumeric) latte. On vacation found this little spot steps away from where I was staying. After I dodged the seagulls, I stepped inside and saw that it was a quaint bakery with ample seating, and an open view kitchen. It was quite busy as people were coming in and out frequently getting their takeout. Apparently you can get breakfast sandwiches here as well, not just pastries or danishes. Staff was helpful and sweet. I had a coffee and cinnamon roll (which I haven't had in a while. The cinnamon roll was fresh. Actually still on the baking tray when I ordered. The first time I experienced food from The Baler I was at a work function. They had cookies and pastries from The Baker. I asked where the food was from and they told me. I thought they were talking a particular person at first until they clarified it was a bakery named The Baker. I told myself that the next time I was in New Bedford I would go and try more sweets. It is a normal bakery in downtown New Bedford. The ambiance is similar to a coffee spot, but light and airy. The service was quick when I ordered. I was in the area for work and wanted to try a local cafe since I'm rarely here. So glad I chose this spot! First off, the customer service is incredible. They only have an employee restroom, but the team was kind enough to let me use it. As for the food, while the bread and croissants looked amazing, I only ordered a matcha latte. It was good but a bit too sweet for my liking--I just assumed it would be sugar-free. If I ever return, I would love to try their pastries as I noticed that is what most people were ordering. This was a cute little bakery that appeared extremely popular. There is a small seating area in the front of the cafe (relatively limited seating), and the majority of the space is comprised of the kitchen and prep area. We were greeted by a friendly cashier who took our order. The cafe has a selection of coffee and tea, as well as breakfast sandwiches and pastries. I got a chai tea latte, which was delicious with a great blend of spices. I also got an egg and sausage sandwich. Everything was prepared fresh and served hot. We took our order to go, and greatly enjoyed it. I'd definitely return. read more

We stopped by The Baker after seeing a picture of the crème brûlée donut and were not disappointed. Between the four of us, we got a few crème brûlée and chocolate ganache donuts, a blueberry pop tart, bread pudding, a cookie, and two quiche. Nothing was disappointing. I am very picky about donuts and the chocolate ganache donut was easily a top three for me. A lot of the ganache was in the back of the donut, so not evenly dispersed, but it gave me an opportunity to try part of the donut without the filling and the donut without anything else even stands on its own. It has a nice crisp on the outside and the inside is pillowy, a perfect combination for how I like my donuts. read more

The young gentleman taking our order was kind, patient, and helpful with menu questions and even gave a few suggestions. Brought a friend who had never been before so of course we had to sample a few items. Went with a strawberry chocolate croissant and a strawberry crunch donut that was on special for the weekend. Also got a classic bacon, egg, cheese on their famous sourdough, a warmed linguica cheese roll, and 2 beverages. Everything was absolutely delicious. I got an assortment of pastries and the linguica stuffed pretzel roll was by far the best. It was soft and flavorful in the inside, and I'm a sucker for pretzel bread. The linguica roll was good as well, but not as good as the pretzel. The apple tart, pecan sticky bun, and the cookies & cream cookies were good too, but I didn't think any of them particularly stood out. read more

Went there for the 1st time ... walked in, stood in line for about 5 minutes then walked out. I originally went there thinking I would buy gift certificates & desserts for Mother's Day gifts but that was unsuccessful (same thing happened at Sunrise Bakery on Dartmouth St., review of that place also posted). So hubby & I went there to buy gift certificates & desserts for Mother's Day gifts, as mentioned ... but when I seen that this place, which I thought would be a proper bakery but seen it wasn't and had hardly any dessert items or anything close I changed my mind and told hubby that we'll just go somewhere else for our gift purchases but since we're there we'll just get a couple of breakfast sandwiches ... that was also unsuccessful ... and I will tell you why : so we're both looking at the menu on the wall where you choose how to build your sandwich. I was going to choose a sourdough bread, egg, cheese & ham sandwich ... hubby was going to have a croissant with egg, cheese and corned beef sandwich. Then all of a sudden hubby says " wait, do you see that everything is priced separately?!?" As he was saying it is when I also noticed it. So basically each of our sandwiches were going to cost between $12-$15!!! That's insane!!! Way too expensive. So this place doesn't have proper dessert items and you just about have to take out a loan to pay for these sandwiches, a simple breakfast sandwich. Sorry, but no. I can make a decent breakfast sandwich at home myself or even go to almost any fast food restaurant or even Cumberland Farms for something close to it for a 3rd of the price. I hate having to write something so negative, but The Baker truly deserves it. We were on our way to the Cape on a Thursday morning and I was asked by Rebecca if I wanted to stop by The Baker and it seemed like a good idea. We rarely go out in the mornings and my last couple of trips there were not perfect. So I walked in, went to the counter, saw that the place was without customers but the 7 or 8 employees were all gabbing in the kitchen so I figured I would get great service. Well I didn't. A young lady came from behind the area and said "oh we aren't open yet, you have to go" and she came up to walk me to the door as I said to her I was sorry and she said I could come back but that I shouldn't be there, they didn't open till 7:30 and that I could come back later. I said we were leaving town and would not make it back today and she went right to the door and locked it right behind me as I walked out. I got in the car, right in front of the door and the time on the clock was 7:26. Really? I have to say, I have never felt so insulted by any restaurant or 'bakery' anywhere in my life, and I've been around for quite some time. I cannot ever imagine going back to The Baker as this was clearly poor and misguided service that I had been told of but never really experienced this way before from them. It's a shame as New Bedford really needs the help of its citizens to make each establishment worthy and this clearly is not one of them. read more

We needed to be in New Bedford late on a Saturday morning, so I checked out the reviews on Yelp and was amazed not only by the number of 5-star reviews, but also the lack of any reviews below 3 stars (and only 3 of those). Any place with such a consistently stellar reputation had to be doing something right. We were able to park about a block away, learning - after the fact - that metered parking was free on the weekends. We were cheerfully greeted by Victor, who was genuinely thrilled to know that he was mentioned so positively in reviews. What a breath of fresh air! My wife and I ordered custom egg sandwiches: mine with pepper jack cheese and linguica on a croissant, and my wife's with pepper jack cheese, bacon and chipotle mayo on an English muffin. I had the nitro cold brewed coffee, and my wife had hot tea. All of the above were superb, and even though there was a bit of a line, it seemed to take no time at all. We even managed to find a small table, where we were able to enjoy our meal and catch our collective breath. The experience ended with a hardy handshake from Victor. We'll be back! read more

Excellent food, this place makes me miss home. My friend brought me here while I was visiting. The place was busy but fast, considering! They didn't seem understaffed like a lot of places these days and the vibes were good. Everyone was friendly and cheerful. They were sold out of some things I wanted to try (apparently it's good to call in and order ahead if you want something specific) but everything I got was delicious. I ordered a passionfruit donut, canele de bordeaux, bacon and cheddar quiche, and a linguiça roll. The passionfruit donut was SOOO GOOD!! The outer donut was rolled in sugar which made me worried that it would be a bit too sweet but the filling was tart and not overly sweetened so it was just delicious. The canele de bordeaux was something I'd never seen before, the inside was a bit pudding-like with a chewy outside. I really liked it. The quiches were nearly all sold out by the time I got there so I got the last one, and it was great too but I have to say the passionfruit donut was the star of the show for me this time. Visited on a Wednesday, so unfortunately (we were told) it was the day they keep a lower inventory of baked goods bc it's not as busy. I got the chocolate croissant and it was very tasty- flaky and light. Daughter got the dulce de leche brownie that was rich and moist and just how I like brownies. Other daughter got the hazelnut raspberry danish. It was also very tasty. Staff taking orders was friendly and didn't make me feel like my indecisiveness bothered her at all. Cute spot with a well rounded menu. I got the smoked salmon bagel, an "Oreo" cookie, and a taro lavender latte with oatmilk. All were pretty good. Only slightly negative comment is on the bagel. The bagel itself was overpowering the flavor of anything else. The whipped cream cheese was totally washed out by it. The secondary flavor was the pickled red onions. Although one of my favorite things, it was the only other thing I could taste besides the bagel. Bummer. Service was awesome. My bagel was taking a minute.
