I am a huge coconut lover - this place hits all the right notes! The avocado coconut smoothie is pure perfection. So smooth, simple, and not too sweet to make you feel heavy. I would get this over and over again, and would also love to try their whole menu because everything looks good. Tip: you can ask for a sample if you're unsure on flavors! The workers are so nice here, even when it gets a little busy.

Great spot for some dessert after a meal. I got the Coco Mango and it was a refreshing and tasty drink with mango bits. The drink was flavorful and I thought the sweetness was just right. I haven't tried their coconut pudding yet, so I'm curious to give them a try if I'm here again!

I was hesitant to go when the name is sugar water. The store is very nicely decorated happy and bright. The desserts are made from seasonal ingredients of the highest quality you can taste. The mango mochi was smooth and delicate, one of the very best.

I'm a huge coconut lover, and honestly, no bottled coconut drink compares to the real thing. Every drink I've tried here tastes incredibly fresh, like you're drinking straight from an actual coconut. The coconut water with strawberry is refreshing and yummy. I also accidentally ordered the coconut pudding thinking it was just coconut water, and it ended up being such a lovely surprise, especially coming from someone who usually hates pudding. The texture reminded me of fresh coconut meat mixed with coconut water, which made for a delicious combination. Everything tastes super refreshing and hydrating. I'll definitely be coming back!

Tongsui is one of my favorite spots and I every time I eat at tongsui I am bummed that they aren't in Denver!! So many vegan options! Their speciality is the pudding - I've tried the mango - so classic I think this is the best, durian - so good, pleasantly amazed and the rose litchi pudding - so good! I love that they're not as sweet. Their drinks are also really good. Tongsuiii - please open a store in Denver!!!

It's been a while since I've had tong sui. Since melo melo popped up in the bay, we've been going there a lot more. However, in my mind, I've always thought they were pretty similar. Well I recently did a side by side comparison and they are def not the same! The texture of tong sui is much more firm, more akin to smooth coconut jelly, whereas melo melo is more soft and silky, almost like a custardy pudding. Personally, I like the texture of melo melo a lot more - I just melts in your mouth! I also like the flavors at melo melo a bit more, like their triple matcha and triple latte. I'd say melo melo is sweeter while tong sui is lighter, so side by side, tong sui tastes a bit more bland. However, with that being said, I still think tong sui makes a great dessert that's nice and refreshing on a hot day! They also have cool seasonal flavors, like persimmon during the lunar new year!

Walking around San Mateo after dinner, we decided to pick up some dessert. I've previously enjoyed Tong Sui's assortment of coconut puddings and saw a new seasonal, roasted yam on their list. Also, I've never tried their drinks, so this would be a first for me. ***OUR PICKS*** COCONUT ICE BOMB WITH MANGO ~ Fresh coconut water, coconut milk, fresh mango purée. This was a lightly sweetened refreshing drink. Perfect, if you don't want anything rich and heavy. I added crystal boba for a chewy, bouncy texture for an otherwise silky, smooth drink. Lovely, but somehow I ended up missing sago. I guess too many shops add sago that I've become accustomed to having it included when mango and coconut are together. Silly me! 4/5 ROASTED YAM COCONUT PUDDING CRÈME BRÛLÉE ~ coconut pudding topped with fresh toasted sweet potato purée and house special crème brûlée. This one was really yummy from top to bottom! Thoroughly enjoyed every bite of this! Somewhat rich but not at all heavy. If you like yam, this one's for you! 5/5 I walked in and used their kiosk, since the cashier was busy getting a previous order ready. This spot is brightly lit and clean. Service was efficient and pleasant. And the desserts that they make actually taste and feel healthy. If that's even possible being a dessert. It might seem expensive for a small jar of pudding (roughly $10), but it's made with quality ingredients! That's why I'm a repeat customer and a big fan!

I didn't realize that coconut based drinks and puddings could be so addicting. I've come to Tong Sui over 10 times and I can firmly say it's one of if not my favorite spot on B street. The drinks are good, not too sweet and they have great toppings/mix-in options. What really makes this place stand out is the pudding. Now you may be wondering, is the pudding that go-- Yes, yes it is. You can ask for a sample if you don't believe me. I've tried a couple of different flavors like the signature, mango mochi, persimmon mochi, mango sticky rice and the new roasted yam crème brûlée. I really like the persimmon mochi as the persimmon flavor mends well with the coconut pudding. The mochi is a nice touch and you can mix it all together so that everything emulsifies. The roasted yam is my second favorite as it has a nice contrast with the pudding. If you are in the area for dessert, I would highly recommend stopping here.

Tong Sui is a popular Asian dessert shop in San Mateo specializing in silky coconut puddings and refreshing fruit-based beverages. The shop is known for its "not too sweet" flavor profile and use of high-quality ingredients like organic fruits dessert. It was popular for its coconut pudding and specialized on that but overtime they also fruit drink with topping. The shop is small but has some seating area. Ordering is simple using touch screen kiosk. The cocunut pudding is pre-made and the drink is made from order. Currently they have limited time persimmon drink. They don't have any boba tea drink like other boba tea shop. They offer fresh fruit and looks like they add coconut water. The pudding and drink are fresh and refreshing. Pricewise it is is at the higher side compare to regular boba tea drop but ingredients seem good quality one.

Came here two separate times and brought friends over to try. It's pricey for what it is but it's tasty and I can taste the freshness. I lowkey think melo melo has better tasting coconut pudding but the drinks here are super tasty. Around $9 a drink. Unfortunately would come again.

Personally I prefer Melo Melo, but this place isnt as sweet if you prefer that. Mochi mango was fine and sticky rice mango was ok. When I came the 2 employees were both in the back making drinks. There was a couple other customers waiting. There was obviously a really large to-go order Im assuming from a workplace ordering for a bunch of employees because it was lunch hour on a Monday. Had to wait ~15 minutes for 2 jars that are already made.

So many different flavors! I love how light and refreshing the drinks and pudding are. They even have vegan options as well! This is a great spot if you're looking for something that's not too sweet :)

Tong Sui is a small drink shop located in Downtown San Mateo. They have limited indoor seating and a rewards system. The staff are super friendly and even offered my friend and I a sample of their mango coconut pudding (would recommend). Christmas Strawberry (5/5) - SO GOOD! At first I was hesitant to order this drink because I didn't really want a strawberry milkshake. However, the barista recommended that I switch it out for their house coconut milk and it was perfect.

I love the night market decor too, especially the outdoor buildings facade. It's such a fun treat to look at the signs and the fake shops while you wait for your food.

I'm not sure how it managed to happen, given how long they've been around and how many times I've…read moreeaten around 3rd Ave, but I had no idea Dessert Republic even existed, let alone been here. Presumably, never walking down their block of the Main St. alley had a lot to do with it, but who knows how much longer it would've taken if not for my friends suggesting we come here for dinner. Which is kind of ironic, considering the name of this place! While nothing about the outside of Dessert Republic really stands out, the decor inside is great. It may not be all that flashy nor have much of an IG aesthetic, but I like how it has a Hong Kong/Chinatown alley sort of look to it. As for the menu, true to their name, there's no shortage of desserts to choose from, whether it be hot desserts, like glutinous rice balls, sweet tofu, or egg pudding, cold desserts, like mixed fruits, sago, or ice cream sundaes, egg puffs, and crepes. In addition, they also have a bunch of regular food options, from snacks and dim sum items, to rice plates, noodle soups, and even lomo saltado. -- (#A03) POPCORN CHICKEN Not terrible, but not popcorn chicken either. Rather, this felt more like the salt & pepper porkchop dishes I've had in the past - the batter was thick, the chicken was unmarinated, it was seasoned with just salt and pepper, and it was topped with cut peppers instead of crispy basil. -- (#S01) BRAISED BRISKET & WONTON NOODLE SOUP Overall, this was a mixed bag. On the plus side, the bowl was decently loaded, the wontons were plump, and it had chunks of beef tendon, which were tender. On the other, while the noodles were fine, the veggies were way overcooked and the beef was chewy. -- (#M08) SUPER STRAWBERRY - Strawberry Freeze, Aloe Jelly, and Strawberries Topped with Strawberry Ice Cream Undoubtedly, this had a lot of strawberry flavor to it. Even though the strawberry freeze didn't do a ton for me, especially as it melted, I liked how well the aloe jelly, strawberries, and ice cream complemented each other. As far as service goes, I've seen some folks mention running into issues, but I've actually found it to be entirely unremarkable, for better or worse. Each time I've been here, the workers haven't really gone beyond the basics (take orders, bring out dishes, take care of checks, etc.), but I never really expect anything more than that either. Still, they do seem to be relatively friendly and get orders out decently fast, which certainly counts for something. Since I've clearly only had a small handful of what their menu has to offer, there's the distinct possibility (probability?) that I haven't had the best of what Dessert Republic has to offer. However, based on what I've ordered and my friends' egg puffs and sweet tofu that I've tried (both were fine), the desserts here definitely seem to be the safer bet overall. Which is handy since they stay open so late, especially on Friday and Saturday nights (until 1am).

Granted, my friends probably hyped it up a bit too much while we were waiting in line (I think it was already their second or third time going), but, regardless, I thought it was just okay. Fast forward all of these years later and I have to say - whether it's because my tastes have changed or because I found a flavor that I really liked, this place is so much better than I remember! With so many boba joints and dessert shops nearby, it's pretty easy to overlook Beard Papa's. Being located on the edge of downtown/3rd Ave certainly doesn't help, but, for something quick and convenient (and different), they're a decent option. While the menu may not look all that extensive, it has a fair amount to offer when you consider how you can mix and match your choice from their near dozen cream puffs/eclairs and handful of cream fillings. Add to that the occasional seasonal/featured flavors they'll have and their assortment of lava cakes and cheesecakes and there's plenty to choose from! -- ST. VALENTINE'S RASPBERRY ECLAIR - Raspberry Cream Custard-filled Eclair with White Chocolate Coating and Raspberry Frosting This was a seasonal offering (admittedly, an older one), but if they ever added this to their regular menu, I'd easily get this again. Surprisingly, this actually wasn't super sweet and I loved how well the raspberry and white chocolate flavors complemented each other. -- GREENT TEA ECLAIR WITH VANILLA CUSTARD FILLING Not nearly as good as the St Valentine's Eclair, but way better than the original Vanilla Cream Puff I had before. The frosting had a strong hit of green tea to it, and the custard was fine, but, this time, the cream puff felt a little stale/dry-ish. While I definitely enjoyed Beard Papa's cream puffs/eclairs more than I did before, I can't say I've loved everything about this location. Mainly, the service here has been a little uneven - the first time we stopped in, the guy behind the counter looked really annoyed with having to help us and seemed like he was dying for us to leave (FWIW, we walked in almost an hour before they closed). Our last visit, though, the workers were friendly and super fast, as they handed us our eclair before we could even finish paying. Even though my opinion of Beard Papa's has definitely improved, since I never really crave cream puffs/eclairs and limit my sweets to the occasional scoop(s) of ice cream or milk tea, I can't say Beard Papa's is on the verge of getting into my regular dessert rotation. However, given how much I enjoyed their St. Valentine's Raspberry Eclair, I'm definitely more open to coming back than ever before if/when should the desire come along, especially since they don't have those same long lines anymore! THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up for now.
