I met my wonderful friends here for the first time. First of all the building and the decor is amazing. I think they should give you a mini tour before you begin to eat. The food was amazing. I don't love Sushi but there are plenty of options for those of us. We started with the Garlic Edamame and the Korean Pork Ribs. They were both fantastic. In fact, I wanted to eat all the Short Ribs myself and then lick the plate! I had the Udon Soup Vegetables. It looked and smelled so good that my fellow Sushi eaters all wanted to try it. And very good miso soup too--I normally don't eat miso soup because no one seems to do it well, and I live in LA, the mecca for good sushi places in the US. Chaotic place- We were there since 4:30pm, waited in the cold being third in line. There is no order, people come in from the back door as well. The receptionist is inefficient and wouldn't even move while the receptionist in the back filled out the restaurant. The avalanche roll is amazing, very flavorful and great textures. The coconut crunch roll was good, not as much flavor, . The cheese cake is very sweet, so be prepared to bring it home or drink lots of water with it. The peanut butter cream is amazing. You'll have to be a peanut butter lover, it's really peanutty. But it's sooo good! You may want to bring half home. The basil really compliments peanut butter, and the blueberries add a freshness. Wow. Just wow. As a Los Angeles Transplant I was fearful of trying Sushi in Utah bc let's be honest. They are not very close to the sea. But holy guacamole! This place is amazing. They have unique and creative combinations for their rolls and everything tasted so fresh! We were a walk-in and didn't have to wait too long (table of four; two adults, two kids). The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Sat down and "oh cool!" The menus were different! Made of wood and leather and each one was different. I love that! Vibes for sure. We asked the waitress what she recommended as far as appetizers or "tapas" go. She said she loved the Bacon Bubble Gum. Sounds gross. But WOW! What a unique and interesting flavor and texture combo. Salty, savory and chewy! TRY THIS!!! Took us a second to decide on our rolls bc we are usually a Baked Roll kind of couple. They don't have many Baked options. Maybe one. Which was shocking but we quickly realized that this was not your typical sushi spot. The menu takes a while to go over bc the combos are all so unique. We decided on the Blizzard, the Hot Lava and an off the menu roll suggested by the Waitress. My husband likes spicy food so he went with her suggestion, It either came with jalapeño or he added it. I can't remember at the moment. Sorry! Blizzard. OMG bomb! It gave me the crunch I was searching for in a baked roll but it wasn't baked. TRY THE BLIZZARD! The Hot Lava was lightly baked and also delicious. My husbands "off the menu" roll was also delicious and the waitress even brought out this spicy pesto for him and that was amazing as well! The Wasabi is FRESH! Which makes my heart sing cause I really love that punch and when it's not fresh you don't really get the same skull tingly experience. Overall the rolls are on the smaller side (diameter wise) and for me, I love it bc it fits easily in one bite. My husband prefers a more full roll and is okay with eating his rolls in two bites. (Which makes me cringe bc I'm mean... you're not supposed to bite sushi in half people... hellloo!!! Sushi 101). Overall, clean, friendly and accommodating atmosphere. Not all sushi restaurants are created equal. The best of them in my opinion make the fish the star of the show and this is certainly true of Tona! This place is popular so be advised you will have a wait. We showed up on a Saturday at 5:15 and were given a one hour wait. No problem, worth the wait. Place was packed. Many sushi chefs furiously making rolls and slicing fish. Wait staff was well informed, attentive and courteous. Perfect date night atmosphere for wife and I. The fish is the star! We ordered a variety of rolls. Wife and I both agreed that with each one, the fish itself shined through. Whether covered in a variety of sauces or topped with lemon and jalapeno the fish was so fresh and delicious! We mentioned how we like thinly sliced lemon to our great waiter Brian and the next minute he had brought a bowl of it to our table to place on our rolls. SO DELICIOUS! Super happy that they updated their hours for takeout so I can grab food on the way home. Ordered on their website and it all worked smoothly. Parked in front a few minutes early and checked in with the staff inside. They brought the food out on time and everything was boxed and packaged well. I love Tona! My sisters family always does sushi the night before the first day of school, so that meant Tona! I got 4 rolls, but I got to try 8 different ones, which was fantastic! If you ask for their secret menu, they'll bring out a second menu with more variety, and that variety is GOOD. I think the Jack and Playboy were my two favorites (Jack slightly moreso than playboy) and they were both off the secret menu. I also got to try their sashimi angel hair appetizer and their brussel sprouts appetizer and they were both GREAT. The kids found the angel hair and sashimi slightly spicy, but we adults didn't notice any spice. If you like avocado, I definitely recommend the green globe! Stunningly great sushi. Although busy on a Friday night, we were able to get a seat at the bar right away. The flavors were spot on, service was good albeit a little awkward for sitting at a bar.
