1/25/2023 Tom's Depot 991 Fremont Ave Los Altos, CA 94024 We went there for an early lunch on a Wednesday. It is at the south corner of the Loyola Corners Shopping Center with parking in the back. It is a clean modern diner interior with ample indoor seating. The menu is tilted to breakfast offerings with burger/sandwich choices for lunch. I had the fish and chips and the wife had Breakfast #1 with breakfast sausages. My fish and chips was good but not the best I've had. The breakfast was good, but it's hard to mess up this basic selection. The prices are reasonable and a good value. Service was good and it appears they have a substantial take out business based on the activity I observed. I actually tried this place for a hot dog, which they no longer offer. I would repeat for breakfast based on their extensive menu and value. read more

We finally got a chance to stop by Tom's Depot for brunch. It's on a busy corner in the Loyola Corners neighborhood, but there's plenty of parking in the back. They have a few seats on the patio, but now that covid is winding down (we hope), I'd prefer to sit inside. We had omelettes, but the menu was a typical diner. It had burgers, club sandwiches, and shakes. // Ticket Agent Omelette This was at the bottom of the omelette section, so I'm thinking it was the deluxe. It had all the ingredients of the veggie omelette, plus a generous amount of sausage. I saw a jalapenos elsewhere on the menu so I asked them to add some on. Perfect, hot cheesy goodness. The veggies were crunchy, and the meat nourished me with iron and protein. // Spinach Special Omelette Fresh spinach and cream cheese in this one. It sounds weird but it works. Both plates came with a choice of sides, like hash browns, home fries, or fruit. It also comes with toast or english muffin. Nicely buttered of course. There were jams on the table. Meh. I want to still love Tom's Depot, I really do. It's a local staple -- it's been around as long as anyone I know can remember. The previous owners ran it well for 20 years but it changed hands in 2021 and hasn't really been the same since. I've always known Tom's as a breakfast place but they are open for lunch too. There are three or four iron round tables outside but plenty inside. Create your own omelette or order one of the train themed versions. Antonio's scramble is a popular choice but fair warning it's a country scramble. That means it's made in a cast iron and crispy on the outside. Not my thing -- I find it a bit dry. Antonio's special is better. Oddly, it's also a scramble -- with ground beef and spinach -- but cooked the traditional way. Confused? If you don't Antonio's options, there's Matthew's choice with shrimp, avocado, mushrooms, onion, & american cheese. The dish has pretty good balance but it's better if you substitute a sharper cheese. Don't get the lox. The servers seem nice and everyone is trying hard but it's a little off. Disclaimer: I know the owners. That being said, my review is, as always, just based on the quality of the food, given the price point. For Los Altos and the surrounding area, you're going to be hard-pressed to find a meal as reasonably priced as what you'll find here, that tastes good! If you're looking for organic avocado toast, this is not the place for you. But if you want a tasty omlette for less than $20, this is a good option (and really the only option in the immediate vicinity). We had the Los Altos omlette and apple pancakes. Both were delicious and came out about 10 min after we placed our order. We had gotten there close to closing, but they let us sit down and order. Coffee was a bit strong but tasty (and with free refills). My ratings never reflect the service, but it was good and friendly. read more

Quaint neighborhood breakfast stop. Had the breakfast burrito with chorizo which was stuffed eggs, chorizo and potatoes. I'll be able to eat my leftovers two more times. I'm going to give this place a 3 , but honestly it is a 3- . Overall, it's a cool place tucked into the Los Altos neighborhood , lots of regulars which is kinda cool to always people watch. The service was 50/50, very nice guy seated me and as I was solo this day he found me a nice table by the window and cleaned it up right away. The food was average , so good just had the bacon and eggs , but I would say it looked more like 1.5 eggs not 2 and for the toast it was one slice. Always wonder if bread bought in bulk is really a income up when they only give you one slice ... that is always disappointing when getting bacon and eggs , gotta have two slices wheat toast. The waitress was okay , maybe I wasn't recognized as a regular. The wait to order was longer than it should be for the people in and staff on hand , no ask for a drink refill Parking is a little rough a very small lot maybe 5 space but I got in there and street parking but for the area that is expected. Generally clean In the end not the short in the toast ( yep can see I love the toast ) but the price. One soda and 1.5 eggs and 1 slice toast , okay did get 4 slices bacon set me back 22 bucks. I'm writing this review as I've been sitting here. Still waiting. Walked up to someone and said can someone take our order? That was four minutes ago. After 19 minutes of watching two different groups of human get assisted, we have walked out. As soon as we got up someone walked up to my partner and said "Sorry." This is an update for to my last review. Tom's Depot has new owners so the hubs and I stopped by to see how they were doing. The server this morning was very friendly and kept the hubs coffee cup filled. I really like their pico as it is freshly made and not just store purchased salsa. The hubs got 2 scrambled eggs hash browns and sourdough toast. We have been here twice and I will keep coming back they are good. Come check them out. read more

One server was using an earbud and talking to someone while she was working and serving I ordered the omelet with the salmon and avocado - was a pretty small omelet, probably 1.5 eggs. Lox was really overcooked with it being almost rubbery Hash Browns did not have a crust on it - I did ask for it to be extra crispy, just in case they tending to not cook them long enough. Was going to order a milkshake but saw the milkshake on the table next to me and thought that $9 for that might be not worth it. I was wondering if they would be better if there were less customers, as there was only 1 cook, but the restaurant was only /13 full, so don't think I would risk it if the place was packed, though @ 12pm on a Sunday , I don't think it wold be a problem read more

The food is average breakfast. The problem is the cooking is inconsistent and so is the service. I always get the #3 and my dining companion gets the biscuits and gravy. The last time we came here, everything was cooked perfectly. But the order got messed up and one person in our group of 6 didn't get any food because they someone lost that particular order. Today, the food was a bit off and so was the order. My hash browns were under cooked and the French toast lacked the egg-flavor. Our order was messed up again and instead of getting the eggs on the side, they served the gravy on the side. I personally wouldn't come here except it is near where I go hiking and we are always famished after hiking. It's an OK place but I wouldn't make a special trip here. read more

Fluffly, with a small layer of crispy dusted with powdered sugar. 5 stars not because Tom's is healthy or unique. But because sometimes all you need is a ol fashioned diner with good food. read more

Huevos Rancheros was not good. Problem was salsa did not have much flavor. Seemed like tortillas with melted cheese that congealed (not hot enough at serving) with canned salsa poured on top. Steak and eggs was not good. Asked for medium rare but steak came out overdone and dry. Side of toast was too hard. Silver dollar pancake was decent. Service from outside waitress was not friendly (we sat outside). Felt like she was in a bad mood. This place has been on the same corner in Loyola corners Los Altos for decades. They have had different owners over the years but each one of them have maintained true to the history of this historic part of Los Altos. It doesn't look much from the outside or the inside until you order the food and then you are treated to a great breakfast at a fair price a wonderful lunch with all the diner favorites that you would expect from such a local place. I asked for toasted rye bread, and the bread was moldy. I sent it back and asked for whole wheat... it came non toasted. I asked not to put powder sugar on my French toast... it came with powder sugar. I understand that sometimes orders get screwed up, but there is no excuse for mold in the bread. The walls display old articles and gems from the past showing the history of the area and the town. They have a variety of traditional breakfast options which are pretty good but I'm pushing this to four stars mostly for the charm and convenience. A neighborhood breakfast place which fills up during popular hours. We love the traditional pancakes, Mexican chorizo, chicken breast (un-breaded, yeah) sandwich.
