Yummy food. Crispy bacon and friendly staff. Simple diner that delivers all the basics

1/25/2023 Tom's Depot 991 Fremont Ave Los Altos, CA 94024 We went there for an early lunch on a Wednesday. It is at the south corner of the Loyola Corners Shopping Center with parking in the back. It is a clean modern diner interior with ample indoor seating. The menu is tilted to breakfast offerings with burger/sandwich choices for lunch. I had the fish and chips and the wife had Breakfast #1 with breakfast sausages. My fish and chips was good but not the best I've had. The breakfast was good, but it's hard to mess up this basic selection. The prices are reasonable and a good value. Service was good and it appears they have a substantial take out business based on the activity I observed. I actually tried this place for a hot dog, which they no longer offer. I would repeat for breakfast based on their extensive menu and value.

We finally got a chance to stop by Tom's Depot for brunch. It's on a busy corner in the Loyola Corners neighborhood, but there's plenty of parking in the back. They have a few seats on the patio, but now that covid is winding down (we hope), I'd prefer to sit inside. We had omelettes, but the menu was a typical diner. It had burgers, club sandwiches, and shakes. // Ticket Agent Omelette This was at the bottom of the omelette section, so I'm thinking it was the deluxe. It had all the ingredients of the veggie omelette, plus a generous amount of sausage. I saw a jalapenos elsewhere on the menu so I asked them to add some on. Perfect, hot cheesy goodness. The veggies were crunchy, and the meat nourished me with iron and protein. // Spinach Special Omelette Fresh spinach and cream cheese in this one. It sounds weird but it works. Both plates came with a choice of sides, like hash browns, home fries, or fruit. It also comes with toast or english muffin. Nicely buttered of course. There were jams on the table. Man, I love restaurants like this.

    Antonio's Scramble

Meh. I want to still love Tom's Depot, I really do. It's a local staple -- it's been around as long as anyone I know can remember. The previous owners ran it well for 20 years but it changed hands in 2021 and hasn't really been the same since. I've always known Tom's as a breakfast place but they are open for lunch too. There are three or four iron round tables outside but plenty inside. Create your own omelette or order one of the train themed versions. Antonio's scramble is a popular choice but fair warning it's a country scramble. That means it's made in a cast iron and crispy on the outside. Not my thing -- I find it a bit dry. Antonio's special is better. Oddly, it's also a scramble -- with ground beef and spinach -- but cooked the traditional way. Confused? If you don't Antonio's options, there's Matthew's choice with shrimp, avocado, mushrooms, onion, & american cheese. The dish has pretty good balance but it's better if you substitute a sharper cheese. Don't get the lox. The servers seem nice and everyone is trying hard but it's a little off. I support local but want Tom's to be better.

    Los Altos Omlette

Disclaimer: I know the owners. That being said, my review is, as always, just based on the quality of the food, given the price point. For Los Altos and the surrounding area, you're going to be hard-pressed to find a meal as reasonably priced as what you'll find here, that tastes good! If you're looking for organic avocado toast, this is not the place for you. But if you want a tasty omlette for less than $20, this is a good option (and really the only option in the immediate vicinity). We had the Los Altos omlette and apple pancakes. Both were delicious and came out about 10 min after we placed our order. We had gotten there close to closing, but they let us sit down and order. Coffee was a bit strong but tasty (and with free refills). My ratings never reflect the service, but it was good and friendly.

The rest of the patrons including the woman who just sat down and had her order taken...while we wait...
    Angel G.

Been sitting in here for 12 minutes. In the meantime, two people walked in to go and were assisted. An older woman walked in sat down and her order was taken. We are still sitting here. I'm writing this review as I've been sitting here. Still waiting. Walked up to someone and said can someone take our order? That was four minutes ago. After 19 minutes of watching two different groups of human get assisted, we have walked out. As soon as we got up someone walked up to my partner and said "Sorry." Truly felt like they waited for us to leave. Wish I could give zero stars.

This is the #1 I got bacon, soft poached eggs and sourdough toast

This is an update for to my last review. Tom's Depot has new owners so the hubs and I stopped by to see how they were doing. The server this morning was very friendly and kept the hubs coffee cup filled. I really like their pico as it is freshly made and not just store purchased salsa. The hubs got 2 scrambled eggs hash browns and sourdough toast. We have been here twice and I will keep coming back they are good. Come check them out.

11/26/17 Our first Sunday breakfast 10/18/22 Jim and I here are here (local restaurant) after a very long time. I gave 3 Stars today for the first time since we began dining here. I wonder what happened? Maybe a new management? Reasons for 3 Stars: 1. We waited and asked for our table to be cleaned after it was vacated 2. My coffee was not hot so I asked for a new cup 3. My breakfast was unlike it was before the Pandemic 4. Server was a little bit in a hurry to serve us and did not wait a second to say anything like "enjoy your breakfast..." 5. I hope they will have a delicious breakfast next time...

I was intrigued by Tal Palo after reading about it on a couple food sites. It was an…read moreunconventional restaurant concept that had me very curious. So a few days after returning from an overseas trip, I made a lunch reservation with a friend. Apparently, reservations are required if you want a proper meal experience. At $35 per person for lunch, including tip but excluding drinks and additions, it still seemed like good value. Finding parking during lunch time in downtown Los Altos was surprisingly difficult. There were no spots available on the Main Street, so I had to park in the lot behind the buildings. As I walked inside, I admired the high ceilings, curved alcoves and glass-enclosed dining room by the entrance. The entire space seemed to be illuminated by a central skylight. Aaron is a co-owner of Tal Palo along with his partner, Chef Adriana. He greeted and complimented me on my Mikkeller Taipei t-shirt. Aaron told us he was once the co-owner of an Oakland bar specializing in Belgian ale called The Trappist and subsequently knew Mikkel's brother, Jeppe, who founded Evil Twin Brewery quite well. It was cool to meet a fellow artist and Renaissance man. Fittingly, the beautiful space was largely designed by Aaron. We had our choice of seating. It didn't seem as if there were any two tables and chairs that were alike. Each part of the dining room was unique. There's a really nice patio in the back with a cool huge mural on the wall that is undoubtedly popular during warmer months. We chose a nice broad two top table near the entrance, lit brightly by the skylight above it. Chef Adriana introduced herself and brought by what was essentially an elote muffin, and offered it as an optional appetizer. We took her up on it. It was delicious and buttery with the texture of corn kernels, not simply pureed into a batter. I also ordered a Cafe de Olla, which was pleasantly sweet and blended with cinnamon and spices. She then brought a plate with skillfully prepared green salad. It was then clear that each dish was meant to be shared family-style. The portion-size of each dish is about the size of an individual portion, but there were three dishes included in the lunch course. I could see how this might be an issue for those who eat larger portions, leaving them unsatisfied. Me and my friend don't generally eat a ton, so this was perfectly fine for us. Next up was the highlight of the meal, Chilaquiles Verde. The egg was perfectly fried atop tortilla chips that still had a bit of crispness to them. The tomatillo salsa was a perfect balance of flavor, tanginess, spice and temperature. It was a superb dish that outpaces any chilaquiles that I've been able to find locally, and I've certainly been trying out many for the past six months in search of the best one. I think Chef Adriana's version at Tal Palo may be the winner. There was one more interesting dish remaining: fried quesadillas served with a creamy red beet mole sauce. The quesadillas were light and fluffy, made from masa rather than flour. The beet mole sauce had pine nuts and sesame seeds and several other ingredients blended into it. Very unique and creative rendition unlike any mole I had ever tried. The overall experience at Tal Palo was very unique. There is no set menu, and you are served whatever Chef Adriana has prepared that day. So one needs to approach this restaurant with an open mind and leave preconceptions at the door. As I mentioned earlier, the shared portions might not be enough for people with a higher caloric intake. If these are showstoppers, this is probably not the right place for you. I personally really enjoyed the concept and experience. I look forward to trying their dinner course and going to their workshops for things like making tamales.

It's a family-owned and operated restaurant that makes you feel like part of the family. I can't recommend Tal Palo enough.

That was my 1st red flag because usually on Saturday evening places are usually busy around Downtown Los Altos. I was brought to a table and given some menus to review and was told our waiter would be with us shortly. After 5 mins or so, no one ever came to our table to ask us for our order. Again mind you it was not busy at all. Majority of people were hanging in the bar area. At this point I decided to walk out of this place because first impression is everything. This place definitely has bad customer service and would never ever recommend this place to anyone. At this point I believe all of their positive Yelp reviews are FAKE. Do not visit this place unless u want bad service or just want to waste your time. Unfortunately I have to give one star to review this restaurant but honestly they don't even deserve one star.
