Tommy Thai restaurant has been around for ages, and in a time when so many places start out strong but fizzle out, it's nice to have a few trusted spots to rely on. I think we've only dined in once or twice, but we've ordered takeout countless times over the years. We recently ordered via DoorDash and enjoyed the food for a couple of days - yes, the portions are that generous - so I figured it was time to give them the recognition they deserve. This place is always in our top five when we're not feeling adventurous and just want something we know will hit the spot. Their Pad Kee Mow, Pad Thai, Rad Na, fried rice, and soups are all excellent. But the one dish we never skip? The Butter Garlic Noodles. Soft noodles with just the right amount of sauce - this was a staple for us years ago, and now my kid loves it too. They also have some great Cambodian options. Food is tasty but inconsistent. Some days better than others. Spice levels unreliable. You can order "Light Spice 3" and your mouth will be searing ... can't finish your meal. There doesn't seem to be a lower spice option. Papaya in papaya salad sometimes not so crunchy (not fresh). It's very flavorful just not peak freshness. Tom Yum veggies over- or undercooked, depending on the day. And too many and too large chunks of cilantro leaf. When you dine in, the servers seem to be constantly and needlessly shouting to each other across the restaurant or on the phone. Like a mechanics shop or something trying to shout over power drills and ear protection ... but it's only from the servers ... and the dining room is cozy so you're hearing everything. Tall woman with short gray hair is definitely the loudest. They're very friendly though. I ordered takeout and got a very generous portion of pad see ew with children. I generally can't eat spicy food so I asked for no spice and it came out a little bland. I think I'll try mild spice for next time. Otherwise they gave a hefty portion of chicken with the noodles. I asked my dasher if he can ask them to give me a cup of ice with my $50 food purchase and they said no... I came here late night and chose this place primarily because it was still open. The parking lot is small, but there weren't too many people inside, so it was no issue. They had a window outside for those who called in their order to pick up, but I had to go inside to see a menu. I browsed it quickly and ordered. I used their restroom while I waited, which was outside and around the corner. It wasn't the cleanest. I did not have to pay until I got my order, which I picked up from the window after a bout 10 minutes. I had no idea when my order would be ready since they didn't take my name and weren't calling out names. I took the meal back to eat in my hotel and it was still hot. There was a good amount of shrimp in my pad thai, but the shrimp tempura was a bit soggy. Everything was super delicious and had such bold flavors. I was a big fan of the tom kha, it was sour, savory, and aromatic. Papaya salad was crunchy and seasoned with spices and sweet fish sauce. Egg rolls were crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Pad Thai was saucy and had lots of shrimp, chicken, and tofu. Green curry was rich, but not heavy and had great coconut and curry taste. I looooove Tommy Thai! Usually order to go but decided to eat inside this time, the place is very small and there was no wait to dine in but the line for pick up orders was pretty long. Tom Kha Soup is my favorite. It's sour, slightly spicy and the coconut flavor is the perfect touch. Especially on a rainy day like today. Their Pad Thai is also great, feeling bold, I ordered it at a level 7 spiciness. I eat spicy food for breakfast, lunch and dinner but this was almost too spicy so be warned! I have been coming to Tommy Thai for 4 years now. I've tried other thai resturaunts in the bay area but this is my favorite! They're portions are generous, the food is great! The atmosphere in the returaunt is very nice, comfortable and perfect for a date or even a casual get together. I love all their curry's it just depends what you're craving. I love how you can adjust the spice level as well. This was our first time getting the garlic noodles (N8) and it was soooo good! It's a must order from now on we got it with chicken. There's little to recommend about this restaurant beyond the generous portion sizes. I sampled several staples--Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, and Tom Yum--and found it lacking in both balance and authenticity. The Pad Thai was sweet and heavily sauced, resulting in limp noodles and overcooked, dry chicken. The dish lacked the flavors of tamarind, fish sauce, and lime that gives it the Pad Thai flavor. The Pad See Ew suffered from similar issues. The noodles were overcooked and slick with sauce, while the dish was marred by uneven seasoning and large, overpowering chunks of raw garlic. The Tom Yum broth had a passable sourness, but it was missing the lemongrass and galangal, both of which are foundational to the dish. Instead, it was padded with oddly chosen vegetables: thick slices of carrot and white onion which gave it an unpleasant texture. Unless it's the only option nearby or a late-night fallback, I would not recommend this spot for Thai cuisine. read more

It might not look like a lot but the Pad Thai lasted me three meals, so definitely generous with their sizes. However that's really the only perk. The Pad Thai is a bit underwhelming and it's the first place I went to that didn't have crushed peanuts in it so I was disappointed.
