Came here after work to grab some pizza. They sell by the slice and it was pretty busy, so a few options were out while they were restocking. I ordered 3 slices to eat there and 3 to go. Tried the Notorious SMG, Primo, Miss Green, and the Grandma. My favorites were definitely the Grandma and the Primo. The slices tasted better fresh in store. The ones I took home got a little soggy toward the front, but the flavor was still on point. The slices are around $4 each which isn't bad, and they're a decent size with a thin crust. Overall I enjoyed it and would come back. Next time I want to try the square pies. read more

Pro tip: parking is a little hard to find, but is there in back. Place is much larger than appears from the front. Took us a while to figure parking out. Wish there was a sign up front or something for new comers like us. Now for the pizza. I would describe their pizza as being good to very good. A few in LA a little better IMO so going with four stars. Crust was nice and crispy, NY style, but the primo lacked a bit of sauce for me. Preferred the Notorious SMG. GF got Mr white and I think the Florentine and agree the red sauced pizzas were a little better. Service was really nice and friendly and pretty quick considering they do reheat the slices for you after you order. Prices were reasonable as well. May have to try a whole pie and review again, but until then it's A tier pizza but there are a few S tiers out there in LA so sticking with the four stars for now. read more

Came here for Pi Day to eat a couple slices in celebration, glad I chose this over nearby Blaze Pizza. Quality over quantity, well made pizzas that taste better. It's pricier but it slaps, like the crust is crunchy and the dough isn't greasy at all. I got the Notorious SMG (sausage) and The Grandma (margherita) pizza slices. The margherita was perfectly tomato-ey and classic in flavor, the SMG was slightly spicy and salitier making for a more interesting eat. Not the best at pinpointing decor but the interior is super cute vintage looking, reminds me of bowling alley/mid-century style. Welcoming and appetite stimulating orange color. Parking is street in the front of the shop or in a small lot behind. There are two round tables with umbrellas in the back if you want some additional privacy or to enjoy the nice sunshine. Beer is available on tap but at the time I went they were out of their IPA. read more

We love this place! The pizza never fails to be exactly as expected, flavorful, hot and thin crust for me, thick crust for my husband. We learned our lesson from our last visit when we came 30 minutes before closing, come earlier for full selection! Completely understandable since they sell the pizza by the slice. I've purchased slices in the past, and since I haven't written a review I stopped in with my nephew after he passed his driving test. Inside reminded me of a New York style pizzeria. Whole pies are available (NY Style & Sicilian) in addition to a variety of slices, including Gluten free & Vegan. I needed to meet two friends to work on a little side project and one person suggested Tomato Pie. Decent amount of seating, clean, and really friendly folks. Good amount of variety in the pizzas so it was easy for each of us to order our own slices and pay separately. I had two slices- the Ms Green which has pesto and lots of veggies and the butcher with all the meats ha. Flavors were good, I did find the crust a bit dry though. It was around $9. There's beer and wine which a draw for one of the friends. My friend also shared a bite of her cheesecake - slices ready to go from their fridge and it was very creamy and delicious. The ambiance is definitely a standout, casual, fun, and welcoming, which made for a nice experience overall. That said, the cheese blend tasted a bit dated, it reminded us of the kind you'd find on a Costco pizza, which was a bit of a letdown and same with the quality of the toppings with nothing memorable. With so many standout pizza spots nearby like Prince Street and Triple Beam, the competition is tough, and this one just didn't leave a lasting impression for us. Top tier pizza that easily ranks among the best three spots on my list. The tomato pie slice is my favorite of all time. It has an incredibly soft bite with an amazing crunch on the undercarriage. I honestly do not know how they do it, but the sauce is like butter and melts in your mouth, followed by a perfect crunch at the end of each bite. The undercarriage on all the other pizzas has a great crunch and char as well. We tried every slice except the Miss Green because I am not putting artichoke on pizza lol. Tomato Pie is solid pizza joint worth a visit. They have three locations; this review is for their South Pasadena location. We ordered for take-out a Sicilian deep dish, with half as the classic "Tomato Pie" ($25) consisting of Marinara, Romano, and Olive Oil, and half "Utica", a spicy Pepperoni, Mozzerella, with hot honey and pesto cream drizzle ($36). Each of these came atop a crispy sicilian bread that was perhaps slightly thick for my taste, but rich nonetheless. The Utica was delicious, crisp, surprisingly spicy, and succulent. The simpler Tomato Pie was also excellent, emphasizing an excellent homemade tomato sauce. Both were filling and delicious. The service was friendly and helpful. I ordered takeout over the phone and they were quick to take my order, make recommendations, and give me a realistic waiting time which I could plan around. As we did take-out, I will not comment on the ambiance, but the inside was clean and presented a nice retro vibe. The value is excellent. Our large pizza, including tax, came to around $30. Two hefty Sicilian slices are enough to satisfy most people. At 8 slices, this comes to about $7.50/person, or $3.75 a slice, a great price. Individual slices are for sale as well. Tomato Pie Pizza Joint, while not a game-changer, provides a good pie, great sauce, and an exceptional price. If you're in the South Pas area, give the Tomato a visit! The interior is clean and fresh with plenty of tables to sit. There are also a couple tables outside in the back The cashier that rang me up was patient and polite. Since this was my first visit, I kept taking yelp pictures , lol. I ordered a large pepperoni NY thin crust and it was everything you want out of a pizza. For me, the crust is what makes a good pizza. If a place gets that right, everything else follows. The crust is nice and crunchy with damn near no grease. Don't know how they do it. I can't wait to order the Butcher on my next visit. That sucker looked amazing. There is a little parking lot on the side of the building. If you love that NY thin crust pizza. Tomato Pie is one of my favorite pizza joints, and my fiance and I usually visit this location in South Pasadena when we are around the area. It's a cute small place with more seating inside than you may expect from how narrow the storefront looks. They also have a few outdoor tables in the back that you can sit at too. Bathrooms and tables are always clean, and the retro design makes the whole space very charming. Water, utensils, napkins, and extra seasonings (red chili flakes, parmesan, oregano, etc) are all self serve. My fiance and I usually enjoy sharing a few slices from the display case that they reheat for you in the oven because they come out hot and crispy. This time we got a chef's special slice, grandma pie slice, and really really funghi slice. The grandma pie is always delicious in its simplicity of sweet tomatoes, thinly shredded basil, and interspersed melted cheese. The funghi slice was my new favorite because it had punchy garlic pesto flavor that didn't overpower the fresher tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, and funky feta. We have ordered a whole pie before in the past from the Los Feliz location, but it takes a long time to bake, the bottom crust doesn't end up as crispy because it's a whole pie sitting in a pizza box, and it was also a lot of pizza for two people. So we just prefer to enjoy a variety of 3-4 different crispy slices instead. Overall, Tomato Pie is still one of my favorite places to get NY style pizza and we will definitely be back the next time I want pizza! read more
