Stopped in after a soccer game at the school down the street didn't except much but was pleasantly surprised I had the vegetarian wrap and I can honestly say it was the best veggie wrap I've had at any dinner I've been to. my wife had the chipotle chicken wrap with the onion rings which were superb and said everything was so good I should do a yelp review. I've been coming to this diner for many years. Be prepared to wait for a table, especially on weekends at lunchtime. I waited about 15-20 minutes for a party of 11 but was impressed that we were actually all seated together. The issue was that a round table was combined with a square table and we were very close together (it was rather uncomfortable). The restaurant was also a bit chilly. I like to have space while I eat and would have preferred if our large group sat at separate tables. The food isn't amazing but it isn't bad either...I'd say it's good diner food. There's an all day breakfast menu with many healthy options and a lunch/dinner menu as well. The menu isn't as large as at other diners but still a decent amount of food to choose from. The food is pricey so if you are looking to spend as little as possible and want to go to a diner, choose another diner! I loved that I could customize my omelette by adding avocado and lox to a Tuscany omelette while also substituting egg whites and whole grain toast. Good thing I wasn't paying the bill! It was really good--probably because I was super hungry and I devoured the entire thing while leaving some homefries. Our waiter was very attentive despite how busy the diner was. The wait staff was wonderful. The diner itself is very clean. That's where it ends. This place is so overpriced you would think the food would be good, well it wasn't. I couldn't eat the French dip which was supposed to be succulent roast beef (more like steak-umm) yuk! The Au jus sauce was nothing but beef broth from a can. I was so disappointed. We ordered food on the way home from the city. There were 3 of us and it was so expensive for what it was. $63 for a cheesesteak, burger, chicken fingers and fries with gravy. The gravy was not normal diner gravy. We didn't love it. The chicken fingers were not good. They looked like regular frozen chicken fingers but the honey mustard was good. I've been to over 100 New Jersey Diners and I must say this is one of the worst. The food took 45 minutes to come out (there were 2 other parties in the restaurant) and it was burnt. Not really impressed with the food. We had three plates which one was a breakfast for the kids to split. Sorry to say neither of my kids wouldn't touch the eggs and that never happens on Sunday morning at home so there really isn't much else to say about that. I had a chipotle burger with chorizo it was ok . Chorizo was a little on the dry side and the fries were a little over done for my liking and how do fit fries in a cup but I'm going to go there. My wife had a Greek salad that she approved of. They didn't skimp on the cheese and the grape leaves we're pretty good. This is not a diner! The prices are outrageous, there is no breakfast menu. The place was empty on a Saturday afternoon no one approached us for a good 7 minutes and we heard a couple ask when their food was going to be ready because they had been waiting a while. The interior design of the Tom Sawyer diner reminds me of a nursing home decorated by Helen Keller. It has a pretty vestibule area but the rest of the diner will put you to sleep with its flat painted walls. Doesn't feel like a classic diner. However you will be in for a VERY RUDE AWAKENING once the check arrives as their prices are EXORBITANT. For the prices they charge they should include a beverage, any dessert, and a bowl of soup AND salad with every entree. They don't even bring you a basket of dinner rolls. The quality of the food was good except the chopped steak was made with embedded chopped onions that gave the chopped meat a distinctly sour taste. Fine for lemonade but not for meat. The Greek egg lemon soup tasted like it contained corn starch as a thickening agent and was clearly not made like a Greek chef would make it...which is pretty ironic given that the owner of the diner is reportedly the President of Pan Gregorian which is a buying service for most of the Greek diners that exist. The service was befitting of a nursing home too. Slow, low energy, and inefficient. The dessert display (and especially their cookie packages) were fewer and of lesser quality than one would expect in a diner especially for the price. Here is the bottom line. If they are going to charge Park Avenue prices then they had better deliver Park Avenue food quality and service. They do not. Sadly, Tom Sawyer must be turning over in his grave. read more

We have patronized this overpriced diner many times and have had decent food but mostly out of convenience. Our last experience there was subpar with prime pricing. Splenda has to be requested and is heavily rationed. Did you know minimal amounts of raw onion costs $ .50?!?! And the only knowledge is when you get the bill?!?! I'm not opposed to paying but at least disclose the charge when the normal expectation is that it is included. Still not the worst part...fast forward to advising the manager that we preferred to have that cost built in and being advised of any additional charges. I don't normally give food back but the vegetarian panini my daughter got was awful, the mushroom marinated in vinegar and had a really sharp taste. So, I told the waiter if we could exchange it for a veggie burger instead and he said ok then came back with a menu saying the description clearly says it has mushrooms in it. I said to him, she likes mushrooms but this one tasted very bad, has a vinegar taste. He told me it is marinated. After arguing with me some more, I told him I would pay for it and to please bring a veggie burger for my daughter. Long story short, when the bill came he had not removed the panini. Normally, I don't mind the food. But this particular visit left me extremely upset. My sister and I each got waffles with ice cream. I was NOT expecting the price for it to be over $21! When I inquired about the price, the manager explained that since it's not on the menu, they charged the ice cream and waffle separately. I agree with the other Yelp reviewers. The food was disgusting, asked for burger medium rare and came well done, and greasy. Told the waiter but he didn't do anything about it. Ordered a waffle that was clearly very old, dry, and reheated, told the waiter after taking just one bite of it, again, he didn't do anything, brought the check and I had to tell him myself to take the waffle off the check. The kitchen will NOT do substitutions, even though the restaurant was empty and just needed to exchange one side for another. Waiter suggested I just pay for the extra side because it "was just $6"... After expressing dislike, waiter didn't do a thing, there was no manager to apologize or anything of that kind. I guess they charge for the new renovation they did and are making up for the loss by raising the prices on the menu. Went to the Tom Sawyer for Saturday breakfast. My husband ordered eggs, I ordered pancakes with strawberries and an iced coffee. While our server was pleasant enough, the coffee arrived with "stuff" floating in it (brown crumb-looking things and even better, a dead bug!). I flagged our waiter over, who apologized and I got a hot coffee instead. Pancakes tasted good enough, but when I was almost finished, I pulled a hair out of the whipped cream on my plate. As I wear a crewcut, I knew it wasn't mine! I asked for the check immediately. When I went to pay, I was asked by the hostess how my meal was. I told her and she immediately called over her manager who may be the owner. I told him he may need to remind his staff about good hygeine practices, as I had a dirty glass with things floating in my coffee and a hair in my pancakes. The man was extremely unpleasant, making me feel like *I* did something wrong by complaining! He said that when I saw the hair, i should have called the server over. I then replied that I felt bad enough calling him over about the coffee and figured I'd complain when I paid my check. The man then looked at me and said "what are you looking for me to do?" I then said he should remind his kitchen staff to clean dishes properly and to wear hair nets to avoid hair getting into the pancakes. He then mumbled something about me not having to pay--and then proceeded to take off a measly $4 from our $20-something bill. If he would have apologized or ANYTHING, I would not even be writing them up. But the attitude I got was like him saying it was a privilige to eat his buggy hair-filled food. As far as diners go, this one is awesome! The food is great and fresh, and I finally got a fruit salad that didn't have dead squishy oranges and strawberries! Everything is very clean and looks new but it does get very busy especially early in the afternoon which is to be expected. read more

This is your basic "Jersey diner." The diner itself is relatively new, because the old one got burned down in a fire a few years back. It's difficult to review the majority of New Jersey diners, because for the most part they are all the same. It's pretty difficult to screw up eggs and home fries, so I leave most of the diners I frequent pretty satisfied. I would consider Tom Sawyer an above average diner. The restaurant itself is clean and the salad my friend ordered looked pretty good. I would be back for "diner fare" if I was in the area again. read more
