The hype is right - I came all the way to Ohio for Tom + Chee when there is a much closer one in Canton, Michigan. I got the Armagoetta special grilled cheese that was stuffed with pickled spicy peppers, cheese, and some sort of meat with a side of chicken tortilla soup. Both were delicious and very, very filling. I got a taste of a sandwich with brisket in it - delicious - and a bite of the Classic Grilled Cheese Donut. I had never heard of Tom + Chee until they opened this location. Was super excited to try it out because grilled cheese and tomato soup is my ultimate comfort food. Walking in, the ambience and decor was way too busy and over the top. The most accurate word would be gimmicky. This was not to deter me, however! The menu is extensive and offers a lot of choices, some sounding extremely tasty and others (such as a grilled cheese donut) sounding like fair food. But hey, I won't knock it until I try it. I understand markup, but the prices were disappointing. $5 for bread and cheese and an additional $3 for a tiny cup of soup. Don't expect to leave full after spending $10 (after a drink) on a 10 minute meal. I really want to give it a chance, especially because they deliver, so a hopeful three stars it is. read more

Believe the hype! We stopped in here on a blustery day last week to try the famous grilled cheese donut. The mixture of sweet and savory melted, pun intended, in our mouths. It is quite the concept. As I'm from Ohio, I can say that this is such a Midwestern concept. We love things hot, heavy, and gooey, so it doesn't surprise me that it was created here. The only thing that struck me as odd about it was that the glazed side of the donut was placed directly on the grilled cheese instead of the other way around, making for a less awkward sandwich. Perhaps they want the two flavors to be right next to each other in order to highlight their differences? I can't wait to try the other stuff on their menu. read more

Not impressed. My husband picked up carry out and they forgot my child's drink and fruit. He had a 1/2 grilled cheese in a box. When we called they refused a refund. Issuing a store credit. We won't be back. My sandwich was OK. Greasy and the soup tasted like someone went spice crazy. A mistake maybe? Blue cheese chili---covered in deep pools of oil and the tasted of burn. This joint needs new management! Placed order and waited 25 minutes for our food while watching people get their food that arrived after us. FINALLY get our food and my grilled cheese was so cold the cheese returned to it's solid state. I advised the person that was passing out food and she said " I'll have them remake it". Another 10 minutes and no food!! At that point, my husband was done eating so I went to the register and asked for my money back. You will pay 10$ for a small cup of soup and a small sandwich. I skipped ordering based on price per portion. I took a bite off of my daughters and wife's sandwich who decided to order anyway. Not good. Not even close. Editing as this was too generic. So, wife ordered the BBQ and bacon crispy and a side of tomato soup. Daughter ordered a make your own: White bread, American cheese and pepperoni with a side of macaroni and cheese. Wife's sandwich was on what appeared to be a take on Texas toast. The bacon wasn't bad, but it was all you could taste. The soup tasted like a can of Campbell's tomato soup with one cup of water and a half a can of tomato paste mixed in....not really seasoned well. The daughters sandwich, couldn't taste anything but greasy pepperoni. The macaroni and cheese tasted like the old government powdered cheese that use to get issued out before wic came around. Daughter took one bite and couldn't finish. I tried a taste of each of their items, and will say, without a doubt, that I will never be back. read more

Sat down and proceeded to wait 22 minutes for my sandwich. With no one else in the restaurant! Paid $7 for a grilled cheese sandwich with NO CHEESE in it!! I got the Mac+Chee. First time at T&C Stood in line for 30 minutes with only 12 people in line. One slow cashier and other register unstaffed. Grilled cheese OK. Creamy tomato soup not creamy at all and very acidic. Very disappointed. We heard great things about this chain and I figured they would be great since they only make 2 things. Not so. I had high hopes. I saw the Shark Tank episode and was stoked abut some grilled cheese and tomato soup and even more interested in s donut grilled cheese. So on a work trip, I happened to be near one so I took advantage and dragged some co-workers along. I ordered the chunky tomato soup and a crunchy parm chicken sandwich. When you think about potato chips on a grilled cheese and the salty crunchy gooey possibilities, it makes you think you've gone to heaven. But to my great surprise, it was not the best thing I ever ate. It was OK. the soup was good - I like that it was very tomato-y - often you get tomato soups that are more bisque- like people are afraid of the main ingredient. I appreciated that this was all in on the tomato. For dessert, I got the smore donut. I never turn down dessert. I eat an alarming of sweet food and can without feeling sick. It was nearly worrying that I didnt even finish that donut. It was too rich, it needed something to cut the rich. maybe something salty. I don't know. It didn't do it for me. I have tried this place a few times and I still don't see what the fuss is about. I feel it is overhyped because people love the concept so much, I mean, who doesn't love grilled cheese and tomato soup? It is a great concept but unfortunately it hasn't been executed well. Their tomato soup tastes like marinara sauce that you would get with an order of breadsticks. The grilled cheese is ok but nothing special. You can definitely make or buy a grilled cheese from anywhere else that is as good if not better than here and likely cheaper. A regular grilled cheese, cup of soup and small drink is almost ten bucks, which seems way over priced to me. I've had each of their three soups which surprisingly all have the same acidic base and taste alike. The chunky tomato basil soup tastes just like the classic tomato except for some tomato chunks. Ditto the creamy tomato except for some milky flavor. All three are much too bitterly acidic for my taste which runs more to a slightly sweet tomato flavor. With over a dozen different grilled cheese sandwiches, why not have more true variety in the tomato soup choices, especially since TOMATO is part of the restaurant's name? Sandwiches are delicious though, but let's face it --- as long as it has fresh bread, enough butter & cheese, and isn't burnt --- every grilled cheese sandwich is yummy. Rather than spend $10 on a bowl of tomato soup and cheese sandwich at Tom + Chee, I'll open a can of Campbell's and throw a sandwich on the griddle at home for half the money. read more

The flying pig is my favorite and the donut grilled cheese is artery clogging good. It is a fun treat but it is slow and there are not many places to sit. My family and I were completely dumbfounded that Tom + Chee became so popular. The "new" resturant was completely covered in trash, everything was dirty and sticky. The wait was not awful, but the food was beyond unimpressive. The cheese was artificial and scarce. The bread was bland and hardly grilled. When you have two menu items you should at least get one correct, but the soup was a complete disaster also, cold and funky. Even at half the cost it would not be worth it. A lady that was sitting next to us had called in her order and was still waiting for her food after we left. I was so excited when Tom + Chee opened in downtown Cincinnati, hoping that one day I would get down there. It all sounded so great and I really wanted to help a new comer to the food business. Today my husband told me they had opened one in West Chester, which is closer to our home. We headed up there for lunch. It was a bit busy for a Sunday afternoon, I think, but probably because a busload of teens and chaperones had come in right before us. The signage was good, and there are lots of choices. I chose to "build my own" while my husband chose the Flying Pig with a bowl of the soup of the day, Clam Chowder. My sandwich was made with wheat bread, gouda cheese, and roasted turkey, and I added a cup of the creamy tomato basil soup. We chose water to drink. We were handed two cups and our receipt after paying our $23.32! That turns out to be the best of our visit. We found a table, but it hadn't been cleaned and there was pop splattered on the top and one of the chairs. It was the only empty table. I wiped up as much as I could and we used the cleanest part of the table. When our food was delivered I was really looking forward to a delicious treat. My sandwich, with a base cost of $3.95 had one slice of gouda cheese (an additional $1.00) and cubed turkey (mostly dark meat and cost an additional $2.00). On my second bite I hit the first of the gristle and fat. I pulled that off my first half which took most of the meat, and continued. On my second half I took one bite and hit the connective tissue that remains after cooking which should be removed before serving. I then took off all the turkey, that I had paid extra for, and finished my thick sliced bread sandwich. I couldn't even taste the cheese! So I started on my soup, looking forward to the creamy texture, the richness, the basil, the tomato. What a disappointment. The texture was what I would call rustic, which was fine with me, but it had way too much basil, or something else that caused it to be bitter. I LOVE basil, but it just was too much I think. I make my own roasted creamy tomato basil soup, so I know what it is supposed to taste like. This was not it and I was glad I had purchased only a cup! My husband felt his sandwich was okay. He, like me, expected exceptional, especially when he paid $6.95! The bowl of clam chowder, for $5.00 would have been pretty good if he could have found some clams. He loves clam chowder and will order it anytime he can. He found potatoes! There was a young man dashing from table to table to wipe them clean, but never approached our table. Really wished he had. We would have asked to see the manager. All in all we were terribly disappointed and probably won't return. Sorry, Tom + Chee, I'm afraid you have lost two customers. read more

I went to Tom + Chee after ice skating to warm up with some grilled cheese and soup. It was about four in the afternoon and business was slow. There was no line and I got my order within a few minutes of placing it. I had the Tom + Chee sandwich with a cup of the Creamy Basil Tomato soup. I hated the basic tomato soup, it was servered cold to barely warm, and the flavor was bland. I am no tomato soup expert, but my standard for comparison is Cambells, and this was closer to watered catcup than Campbells, but there are no salt and pepper shakers on the tables, more about that later, so nothing available to help out a disappointing life choice. I think I could have had more than two spoon fulls if it was served hot, but tepid made the flavor even worse. So pushed that a side. The white bread double American cheese sandwich was grilled in oil, it may have started out as butter, but the sandwich was a greasey mess when it was served. It was hard to hold in my fingers, so I had to hunt for some napkins to give me a temporary oil barrier. I took a few bites of the sandwich, it tasted good, but I hate getting a oil coating on my cheeks with every bite. So why not cut the sandwich into strips to avoid face contact? Sure, but wait, where are the plastic knifes and forks? I will ask the floor servers, mmm no they are busy chatting in kitchen. Well, then maybe pack up the sandwich for later, mmm no, never mind not worth the trouble to hunt down a box , not enough napkins to lower the oil footprint in my car. Oil everywhere. The were oil smears on the table from past diners, and some left by me, as I aluded to earlier, the tables have no nakins or salt and pepper to help you adjust yourself to a better lunch. OK, so you serve greasy food all day, and you make no alowances for mid meal clean up except for two bulk napkin dispensers at the two far ends of the dining area. Since you bus your own tables, no one goes back to wipe down their dining history. Speaking of which the dining floor space is like a gymnasium, tall ceiling and flat walls so the sounds of all the diners overload the space, so having a conversation is hard to hear over the noise, and on top of the crowd noise, the pump in loud music as well, so if the food does not make you cut your lunch short, the noise level will. Man listen...I don't know what the other folks issue is but the food here is effin delicious!!! Nothing was too greasy, nothing was soggy...we got the traditional grilled cheese and made it a double decker and added bacon...and we also got the donut grilled cheese to share...sweet jesus!!! The creamy tomato soup was and it was all about $25 for 2 people! The best review is your own taste buds--never let someone else's opinion change your mind...not even mine.
