I think I'm in love…read more.. We stumbled upon Mazza as we were looking for a bite to eat before hitting the movies. What a gem we found! Mazza has been in business for 3 months and took over the spot that Agave had been. Everything was great, but here's my list in descending order - Mixed Bolani - freshly made bolani with potatoes and chives. This dish came out piping hot and I slathered all three sauces on top (yogurt, cilantro/mint?, sweet and spicy pepper). Great way to start the meal. I kind of inhaled this one, so next time I will try to slow down and taste the flavor. Tikka Kebab - tender pieces of meat on skewers. The menu said beef/lamb, but all the pieces I got tasted like lamb. Nice sear on the lamb and fattier pieces were tasty (not grisly). This is accompanied by flatbread and an herby, cucumber salad. Eggplant side - I have a friend that makes an excellent version of this dish and I really haven't found anything close until trying this one at Mazza. Cooked down so it just melts in your mouth. Flavors are great and the yogurt just takes it over the top. Chapli Kebab - we had a "I'll have what she's having" moment when this dish came out for the neighboring table. Onions, beef patties and tomato come out on a scalding hot metal plate. This dish was causing smoke for a good 2 minutes after landing on our table. Beef is definitely spiced as the description says (herbs and sumac?) and it comes with a side of fluffy rice. Tip - if you are coming for a meal and a movie, they are currently running a promotion for 15% off your order if you show proof of your movie attendance. Mazza nails it with a triple crown of fantastic good, generous portions, and really affordable prices. Really excited that this is an option for us in the East Bay!

We especially liked the two kabab dishes we ordered: Tikka Kabab and Chapli Kabab. I like the spices they use. I have no idea what spices but everything was good! The kids really liked the bolani. They were being creative and putting yogurt sauce, rice, and meat inside the bolani! They also gave 15% off because we had movie tickets right next door. What an amazing deal! We will be back!

I'm not an authority on Afghan food so this is rated as an outsider…read more Overall the food can be summarized as: lightly seasoned, enjoy the simple flavors of each component, and Must use the sauces to complete the dish. I personally think everything needed some salt, but maybe it's meant to be this way. Highlight is most definitely the green sauce (yogurt and chili, not spicy), baklava (sweet sticky on the bottom and flaky crisp on top, not overly sweet), yogurt mint drink (dough). Shami beef and chicken kebab were juicy and not dry. Through a bit of miscommunication.. I was given the yogurt drink instead of the normal side of yogurt cucumber sauce for the meat, and was warned by Ali that some people don't like it since it's a yogurt drink with salt, but honestly it was great and was essentially a yogurt mint sauce I expect from other Mediterranean/Middle Eastern type places but more watery. So admittedly I just took sips of this while taking bites of the kebab and rice and it was pretty much the flavors I was looking for, but an extra step. Beef Mantu was another source of confusion since there are regular and homemade versions (I didn't realize). They made me the homemade version without confirming with me on the phone; no problem. It was filled with lightly seasoned beef and topped with interesting spices. Overall not bad not great, definitely needs sauce / salt. Too light in my opinion. And for $25 I wouldn't get again not worth it. The customer service from Ali was great. Knowing this was my first time he explained everything, offered to charge me less due to the miscommunications (I declined), and gave complimentary side of sauce and baklava as a nice gesture. Good food. I know how to order next time. Extra green sauce or yogurt drink all over.

Service was pleasant, and we received enough attention throughout the meal course. Great, open seating with the view on the Monument Boulevard, that was bright and comfortable. The outstanding Afghani food, and even better the desserts with saffron tea made this experience complete throughout. Would highly recommend Narunj Palow with thinly sliced dates. Turned out to be a little bit pricier than I thought it would be for a lunch, however, it really did worth it.

Unfortunately, I already knew there wasn't going to be a next time and Zelle'd her anyway. This place really needs a good deep cleaning. I walked in to a small eatery with very few tables, horrible lighting, flies everywhere, a random piece of pipe on the floor, and a very sad looking display counter. I was worried about the cleanliness of food preparation just based on what the restaurant looked like. I was hopeful, however, and the food itself wasn't that bad. I didn't get any flat bread with my beef koubideh order. It was a little tough, but decent seasoning. There are a handful of similar cuisines in the area that I would probably go to before landing on this spot.

We got a too good to go order which was massive filled with an incredible amount of rice, chapli kabob, stewed spinach or kale, salad, a carrot samosa, a potato samosa, flat bread with potatoes and leaks, and baklava AND we got a separate koobideh. The restaurant is located a shopping center with plenty of parking. The staff included a young man who worked the front and the back and a woman who I believe cooked everything. The restaurant leaves a bit to be desired as far as ambiance goes, but is good for pick up. The young man was very nice. The food smelled incredible. We could not wait to get home and dig in. The chapli was very spicy ( I've never had this before and was surprised). But otherwise everything else tasted great.
