Kobedeh Kabob
Kristie W.

Abas Hamidi Afghan restaurant is a hidden gem. The owner is so friendly, she makes all the food there and she offers catering services too. I love the Chapli Kabob, Kobedeh Kabab, Mantoo and the Badnjan Buranee. And the Baklava and Cream Rolls are super delicious. You won't be disappointed, believe me, this place is worth the visit.

The food portion was good. I was hungry so I liked it very much. Service I cannot comment because it was a to go order. From what I can tell, it is a place where you get a quick bite to eat or take it out. They do have decent sitting though.

Came for a surprise bag from Too Good To Go and received a delicious (and freshly made) meal (appetizer and dessert included)! The owner was super super nice. The order came with some bolanee, salad, rice, Kobedeh, some chicken that was yummy, a sambosa and a baklava. It was such a great way to sample their menu. Will definitely be back.

What a gem! I found this place purely by accident, because I was in the area last weekend. I spotted it on Yelp (thanks yet again!) and it seemed to have great reviews and feedback from a lot of customers, so I decided to give it a try. And I am so glad that I did. I ordered a few different things from this place and I really liked them all, let's go over the items I got one by one: Bolanee Catchalou ($10) - This dish was amazing. It reminded me a lot of a Chinese scallion pancake, but this Afghan version came with potatoes, leeks and cilantro. It was savory, delicious, and very extremely comforting. The flatbread was soft and warm and not overly greasy, and the potato and leeks filling was perfectly seasoned. And I especially loved how this stuffed flatbread came with different sauces. It came with a yogurt sauce and spicy chili sauce. 10 out of 10. I would order this again. Kobedeh Kabob Beef Plate ($12) - this was a plate of two long charbroiled ground beef sticks. And the beef was well seasoned with onion and some special seasoning, according to the menu. And it also came with a tall mound of rice. I think this plate was really delicious and filling, and I liked it. Although I think I might have preferred the Chapli Kabob more. Chapli Kabob Plate ($12) - The look of this plate was very similar to the other kabob plate but the beef on this one was shaped in 2 patties, and they had stronger flavors in my opinion - they seemed more seasoned with onion, cilantro and special seasoning. And this dish also felt slightly spicier than the other kabob beef plate. Similarly, it also came with a mound of rice. This dish was extremely comforting, filling, and very delicious. They also served a place of complimentary lettuce and tomato slices. Perfect for the kabob plates. I would not call this place a restaurant, given how small the shop was. But what this shop lacked in space, it made up for in the good quality and delicious tasting foods it served. The service from this place was really nice and friendly as well, so it was another plus. I would certainly go back to this shop to try their other foods.

*****Customer Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic***** Abas Hamidi Afghan Cuisine is a small family-owned restaurant located in a plaza just west of Concord High School, in the Dana Estates area of Concord. Knowing I love Afghani food, a friend of mine told me about this place a while ago. I finally got a chance to try it when I came here for some takeout on 08/29/2020. I walked into the establishment at around 6:15 pm. The ordering area was narrow and the only noticeable COVID-19 safety measure was a bottle of hand sanitizer on a table near the entrance. It took a few minutes before the lady boss to acknowledge my presence since she was busy cooking. She had a great smile and was very friendly and polite. Their menu featured about a dozen classic Afghani dishes, plus a small assortment of savory and sweet snacks. Below are the items I ordered: Bolanee Catchalou - A savory flatbread stuffed with a filling made with potatoes, leeks, and cilantro and served with a slightly spicy green chili chutney. It was quite delicious and the spicy chutney was a perfect condiment. It would have been perfect had they put a little bit more cilantro and leeks into the filling. Quabili Pallow - You can get it with either beef or lamb. I chose lamb and it was the right choice. The lamb was excellent. It was tender and not gamy. The seasoned rice, topped with carrots and raisins, was absolutely delicious. Chapli Kabob - Consisted of two giant beef patties, rice, salad, and flatbread. The patties were mixed with cilantro and onions and seasoned with various spices and then pan fried. They were flavorful and moist despite the dry looking appearance. Beef Koobideh Kabob - The seasoned ground beef skewers were charbroiled to perfection. They were juicy and robust in taste. Chicken Koobideh Kabob - It was prepared similarly like the Beef Koobideh Kabob. And like the beef ones, these were excellent as well. Chicken Kabo - My least favorite out of everything. It was a dish with about a dozen pieces of charbroiled chicken breast, served with rice, salad, and a couple pieces of flatbread. The chicken was marinated with a blend of regional spices and charbroiled. Although the taste was good, the texture was very, very dry. Everything was made to order, which took quite a bit of time (about 40 minutes). The owner and her family were all involved in the operation so this truly was a home-cooked meal. The portions were very generous. I ended up paying $65 for the entire meal which I thought was a bargain. Despite a couple misses, the food was generally delicious and tasted like homemade. Very glad I gave this place a try. I will return for sure. BONUS MATERIAL: - Major credit cards accepted. - They sell fresh Afghan cheese.

Can be described as healthy, simple and great value. I'm not sure what authentic Afghan food is like as this seems a little bit different than other places, but what I can tell you is that it was reminiscent of a home cooked meal. One that makes you feel satisfied without any regrets.

Yummy!

I love Afghan food! Abas Hamidi is a one of the best to go restaurants you probably never heard of. The food reminds me of the meals I would have at the home of an Afghan family I grew up around. The owners are kind and friendly, and the food here is great!

This is a total mom-and-pop serving no-frills Afghani food. This was our first time trying Afghani food and we really enjoyed the experience. Heads up that they take a little longer to order food so it's best to call ahead. We called ahead to order and the woman told us 25 minutes. 25 minutes later, we arrived and only had to wait another 10 minutes or so, which isn't too bad. We ordered: - Boulanee Catchaloo: This is a pan-fried flatbread filled with potatoes, cilantro and leek. It comes in a pizza box and the smell is HEAVENLY. It comes with a spicy ketchup which is absolutely delicious! Warning: the portion size for this is HUGE. - Chapli Kabob: This was a grilled beef patty over rice and salad. The flavor was alright but pretty simple! It tasted like...salty ground beef! We do wish that it came with a sauce or something because overall the dish felt a little dry. - Beef Koobideh Kabob: This was grilled ground beef shaped into a kabob. Same as Chapli: simple flavor but a tad on the dry side. Comes with a green fruit relish. Overall, if you're tired of your regular takeout I suggest trying something new here. The food skews on the dry side so you might have to bring your own sauce. The ladies that were cooking and rang me up were so sweet! They didn't speak much English but had the sweetest smiles!

Only reason i am changing my stars is because the food is never ready on time. i've always had to wait 30 min or even longer sometimes and i call hours before to place the order. Don't get me wrong her food is delicious but slow on timing with the orders

I really wanted to love this new Afghan restaurant in town, but, unfortunately it was a miss. Let's start with the positives: the food was hot, the portions were HUGE & the owner is very nice, but that's where the positives end. Being Afghan myself I know what great Afghan food tastes like & unfortunately the flavors just weren't there. The meats lacked essential Afghan spices & were very one note. The chutney did not taste authentic, the rice was a little undercooked & the mantoo was very salty. (I really hope they were just having an off day.) On top of everything our food took an hour to be made when we were quoted 40 minutes. The restaurant itself is definitely a little hole in the wall. I think this is mainly a takeout establishment. It's really a bummer to have to give a new Afghan spot such a low rating.

Found mold on my Beef Sambosa that was displayed in the front of the store.

Decided to get 2 of the Beef Sambosa that was displayed in the front of the shop. The lady asked me if I wanted to heat it up and I obliged. Once I got outside, the first one was delicious however, the second one didn't taste well. Took a closer to look at it, and it was mold on the beef so I threw it away. Please be careful.

I wasn't aware Abas Hamidi Afghan Cuisine was in the Dana Plaza Shopping Center. I am always looking for tasty Afghan food. A fellow Yelper, Harvey K., recently left a great review so I knew I had to try it! We were excited to order lunch from here so we kind of went overboard with the selections. We ordered a few appetizers- bolani katchalu, sambosas and mantoo, along with chicken kabobs and beef koobideh. They give you soo much food! We have enough to eat again for dinner. The bolani is a stuffed flatbread with potatoes, leeks and cilantro. I couldn't taste much of the cilantro and that would have helped to brighten the flavor. The sambosa (fried snack filled with potato and spices) is similar to an Indian samosa, but prepared with a thinner dough. Mantoo are delicate soft dumplings filled with minced beef and onions in a garlic yogurt split pea sauce. Delightful! The chicken kabobs were well seasoned but were unfortunately dry and over cooked. You need to eat it with the condiments given (green and red sauces) to make it palatable. On the other hand, the beef koobideh was on point. It was moist, flavorful, and juicy. The rice was plentiful and the side salad was more of an after thought. You can skip that. Abas Hamidi Afghan Cuisine is a family owned restaurant that serves up generous portions at very reasonable prices. Our bill came out to $68 for 4 entrees and 3 appetizers. They also have a few tables to accommodate outdoor seating during COVID. We will definitely be back to try other menu items.

Bolani! AMAZING. The best I have ever had. Massive portion for the price and complex flavors.

I'm not an authority on Afghan food so this is rated as an outsider…read more Overall the food can be summarized as: lightly seasoned, enjoy the simple flavors of each component, and Must use the sauces to complete the dish. I personally think everything needed some salt, but maybe it's meant to be this way. Highlight is most definitely the green sauce (yogurt and chili, not spicy), baklava (sweet sticky on the bottom and flaky crisp on top, not overly sweet), yogurt mint drink (dough). Shami beef and chicken kebab were juicy and not dry. Through a bit of miscommunication.. I was given the yogurt drink instead of the normal side of yogurt cucumber sauce for the meat, and was warned by Ali that some people don't like it since it's a yogurt drink with salt, but honestly it was great and was essentially a yogurt mint sauce I expect from other Mediterranean/Middle Eastern type places but more watery. So admittedly I just took sips of this while taking bites of the kebab and rice and it was pretty much the flavors I was looking for, but an extra step. Beef Mantu was another source of confusion since there are regular and homemade versions (I didn't realize). They made me the homemade version without confirming with me on the phone; no problem. It was filled with lightly seasoned beef and topped with interesting spices. Overall not bad not great, definitely needs sauce / salt. Too light in my opinion. And for $25 I wouldn't get again not worth it. The customer service from Ali was great. Knowing this was my first time he explained everything, offered to charge me less due to the miscommunications (I declined), and gave complimentary side of sauce and baklava as a nice gesture. Good food. I know how to order next time. Extra green sauce or yogurt drink all over.

Service was pleasant, and we received enough attention throughout the meal course. Great, open seating with the view on the Monument Boulevard, that was bright and comfortable. The outstanding Afghani food, and even better the desserts with saffron tea made this experience complete throughout. Would highly recommend Narunj Palow with thinly sliced dates. Turned out to be a little bit pricier than I thought it would be for a lunch, however, it really did worth it.

I think I'm in love…read more.. We stumbled upon Mazza as we were looking for a bite to eat before hitting the movies. What a gem we found! Mazza has been in business for 3 months and took over the spot that Agave had been. Everything was great, but here's my list in descending order - Mixed Bolani - freshly made bolani with potatoes and chives. This dish came out piping hot and I slathered all three sauces on top (yogurt, cilantro/mint?, sweet and spicy pepper). Great way to start the meal. I kind of inhaled this one, so next time I will try to slow down and taste the flavor. Tikka Kebab - tender pieces of meat on skewers. The menu said beef/lamb, but all the pieces I got tasted like lamb. Nice sear on the lamb and fattier pieces were tasty (not grisly). This is accompanied by flatbread and an herby, cucumber salad. Eggplant side - I have a friend that makes an excellent version of this dish and I really haven't found anything close until trying this one at Mazza. Cooked down so it just melts in your mouth. Flavors are great and the yogurt just takes it over the top. Chapli Kebab - we had a "I'll have what she's having" moment when this dish came out for the neighboring table. Onions, beef patties and tomato come out on a scalding hot metal plate. This dish was causing smoke for a good 2 minutes after landing on our table. Beef is definitely spiced as the description says (herbs and sumac?) and it comes with a side of fluffy rice. Tip - if you are coming for a meal and a movie, they are currently running a promotion for 15% off your order if you show proof of your movie attendance. Mazza nails it with a triple crown of fantastic good, generous portions, and really affordable prices. Really excited that this is an option for us in the East Bay!

We especially liked the two kabab dishes we ordered: Tikka Kabab and Chapli Kabab. I like the spices they use. I have no idea what spices but everything was good! The kids really liked the bolani. Parking is plenty on the street or in their little lot if early/off hours. If it's on a busy time or with events going on at Todos Santos Plaza, then it can be tricky to find parking. I got the Chicken Platter ($18.99) It came with rice, chicken, salad, humus, 4 triangle pita bread and extra tzatziki sauce on the side. The first thing I noticed right away was that they love their sumac here. I don't mind it at all and the more sumac the better I think. The rice is really fluffy and pairs really well with the chicken. With the tzatziki sauce drizzled on top and extra to add on each bite, it's a great combo wombo of flavor. The hummus is really good too! It is not watery like some places and holds its shape well. Went great with the rice/chicken, with pita or even by itself! Salad was just mix of greens, tomatos, cucmbers with some cheese crumble. No olive oil or vinegar was added so I had to spread some tzatziki to give it a little boost. Overall the dish was really delicious. I would recommend to come here if you like Mediterranian food. Interested in their falafal and would likely get that next time.
