We spent some time this summer in Turkey which turned me on to Ayran, a delicious, salty yogurt drink -- perfect for hot days! I was craving it since home, especially when our days here have been sweltering. I had no idea where to get it locally, so I asked in a local Facebook group. I was turned on to Super Tehran, which is right by Costco. How convenient! The staff member behind the counter so friendly and helpful! Someone in the group mentioned which brand to get, but I could only see a tiny bottle that said Ayran. They had bigger sizes, but it said yogurt instead. The staff member was happy to help, and confirmed it's Ayran and mentioned there's a mint one as well. I also spotted a variety of Labne, and he shared with me which one was his favorite of that as well. The store is petite, but was quite busy with people. There were numerous things I wanted to try, but I had a fussy baby in tow, so we had to get home. I will most definitely be back and can't wait to try more! The store was clean, had a wide variety of products, plus everything was well in date (sometimes, with international stores, you find that the products have expired or are close to expiration, but this was not the case here, at least in the dairy products I was looking at). A small, but organized shop that sells Persian items. Took my mom here when she was visiting me in town so she could get all the things she needed. They make their bread weekly, but I am unsure which days they make them in case you want to get fresh bread. They also make their cheese in-house! We have been shopping this store for a few years. But not a dime anymore. Very unprofessional staff who hardly speak English. Tried to return a package of pumpkin seeds that smelled old and bad. I visited Tehran Market today to buy some baklava. While browsing the store, I also picked up some snacks and Jalebi. My total came to about $70. When I got home and tried the baklava, it was not fresh but soggy. It was gross and inedible, so I will be throwing it away. I'm not sure why they would even sell it. I've had better tasting and fresher baklava from Costco. For about nine pieces, I ended up paying $15. Additionally, the cashier was unfriendly. I do not recommend this place. read more

Tiny, clean, organized, stocked to the rafters, and full of delicious little odds and ends. I come here regularly for a few specific items as well as their frankly enormous selection of Sadaf spices and herbs. I also come here for their freshly made pyrashki (piroshki), which are hands down the best in the area. The only ones I've ever had that compare are from Cinderella Bakery in SF but I'm not in the Outer Sunset anymore. These are delicious, not at all greasy, a great balance of herbs and spices in the filling, and the pastry is never hard or chewy even at the ends. A good size for a light lunch or part of a dinner with a cucumber salad or something else on the side. Also about 2/3 the price of the ones at Cinderella! Small but also packed refrigerated and frozen cases, but I've not yet tried anything from there. Never found anything past its expiry date. Prices can be a bit steep, yes, but if you want that specific ingredient and you want it now, Super Tehran is the place to go. Or if you want pyrashki. Okay so I never thought much of this place until my Lyft driver said they make & sell the best bread & cheese in this area. My driver was Iranian & he's been living in Pleasant Hill for nearly 30 years, so I believed him. I ordered both--which they make in-house--& they both really do taste phenomenal. The bread is a Persian flatbread, and it is HUGE. Like it will last you several weeks. I literally froze mine, AND it was super inexpensive! The Bulgarian cheese is also out of this world good! Pair it with some raw honey or olives/pickles, high quality olive oil & that flatbread, and you have yourself an incredible breakfast spread! Their market looks tiny, but is packed with yummy goodies. Everything is very clean and organized. They sell flowers, fresh herbs, hot food, gourmet goodies, hot soups and fresh Lavash bread that is baked on the premise. They also carry Lavash from San Jose and Los Angeles. Our family has been shopping here for many years. We've had one incident with a previous owner, with a bag of rice filled with warms. The owner immediately refunded the money without a word, and we continued shopping here, just avoided buying rice. A few weeks ago I bought the frozen shredded dough, opened it 3-4 days later to find it covered in mold. I immediately went back to request either a refund or exchange it for a fresh pack. The cashier - a young tall guy - refused to do it and asked I come back the next morning and talk to the owner. Went back the next morning, the owner is not available and the cashier again refused to exchange it. There was an older gentlemen with him this time, who I think might be the owner himself, but no way to tell. Needless to say, I'm beyond disappointed and frustrated. This place feels like fraud now, and I feel terrible being their patrons for all these years. This is a matter of principal. Will definitely be taking our business somewhere else. Extremely overpriced, items are not fresh. Pickles that I bought had expiration stickers that showed it was good but when I took them home they were all too old and not edible. The shop itself is very small and the service is ok, they were not that friendly but mostly stare in a judgmental way. The worst part is just the quality of the items sold, they're not fresh and extremely overpriced. You can buy the same SADAF items now at Whole Foods, or even Arab or Pakistani markets. This Persian market is overpriced for no reason, the food quality is actually not any better. I live in Livermore and was passing through Concord and I decided to stop here to check it out for later times. The store is not huge but they have almost everything you need and maybe even more. Quite interesting.. unassuming... in a mess of a teency strip mall just above the intersection of Monument/Oak Grove. 3 shoddy and unkempt places.. But I found a quicky stop for Persian comestibles! The last 4-5 books that I've plowed through have been about Iran---its history (incl people groups of Hazaras, Azeris, Turks, Azerbaijanis), Hafez and the national love for poetry, and Shia Islam and the 12 Imams. The issues of theocracy, Evin prison, etc. are clearer to me now (I even wrote a handwritten letter to Ahmadinejad to please release the hikers!).. I wanted to step into this world a bit more personally. Nothing at all like Zand's on Solano in posh Albany, but I appreciated seeing the homemade dishes for warming later. Everything here speaks 'down-home'. Bought some barbari bread (nan-e barbari): a Persian flatbread (this is also sold at Berkeley Bowl West). Quite different from the Afghani bolani, and VERY different from the Armenian flatbreads I've had. Took my time to try and recognize in real life all that I read in 2 dimensional land... what a trip! read more

HAPPY PERSIAN NEW YEAR! We stopped at Super T on Saint Patrick's Day because there was a huge crowd in the parking lot. Lots of smiles and laughter.... and food! They were giving away free food samples but the line was very long. We waited for a little bit then headed for tacos next door. Ultimately we were waiting for Milo's Bar to open in the same parking lot. When we returned to Milo's this weekend, we stopped in here and asked what the celebration was all about; we were told it had been the Persian New Year. Husband and I walked around the packed store and I purchased a bag of cucumbers (little baby ones). It was a pretty big bag for $0.99. (Washed them at home and they were very crunchy and fresh.) As we were walking out of the store, husband started eyeballing the baked pastries behind the counter. They were sitting next to dates and he asked what one was. The man behind the counter gave him a sample (sweet!) and another employee described what they were made of. I'm told they were very good. As soon as there are three people inside it's hard to navigate. And the prices are a bit high vs the larger stores in Southern California. Having said that, everything seems fresh.
