Food was okay, service was lacking and slow.. Nice selection of local brews which is a plus. Plenty of room , noise level was low and as I said the food was okay, I had the shirmp platter.. and a local brew. So if you are in Grapevine in downtown area lots of choices there so this one is just middle of the road for me. read more

This was my first visit to Tolbert's, but it definitely won't be my last. Just a great place. They hit my "Superfecta." Very affordable, great food, great music, and (most importantly) amazing service. I want to thank Tara, Jacqueline, Natalie, and James for making my night so memorable. I will be back soon and often. read more

My wife and I went here last night primarily to see the Led Zeppelin tribute band, Swan Song. We sat in the dining area throughout the show and had a great time. Swan Song is a really great band. As for the restaurant, the alcohol was good, but the food was below average. Comments: Queso - Very good Ribeye - Very fatty Filet Mignon - Unseasoned Grilled Asparagus - Barely Cooked & Unseasoned Sautéed Mushrooms - Barely Cooked & Unseasoned The asparagus and mushrooms (which were whole) were practically raw and unseasoned. It seemed like they were thrown on the grill raw without a single spice or sauce to spruce them up at all. And they aren't cheap by any means. The filet, which was bare, with 2 sides was about $27. I'll give them a two thumbs up for a great place to hang out and watch the tribute band, but the steak and vegetables need improvement. read more

I can't comment on the food since I just popped in for drinks but service is exceptional. It was triple digits out and my party needed to stay hydrated, so I dropped in for some sodas. To my surprise the hostess refused payment and was such a sweetheart warning me that the lids were not sitting flush and I should be careful of spillage. Wow talk about southern hospitality!! A kind gesture like that made my day! Thank you Tolbert's! read more

This is our 1st time here. If it wasn't for the mosey neighbors, it would've been perfect. The chili was delightful and the chips were oh so crisp. They remind me of this old taco joint I used to frequent. I didn't expect tex-mex to be on the menu but the guacamole was killer, too. We will definitely be back. read more

Great chili? Hmmmmm Do love the atmosphere and have to give props to Arturo's Grilled Cheese Sandwich! read more

Went for a late lunch. No one was there except me and a friend. So you can say the service was excellent :D Chili-cheese fries is boss. Their chili is thick meaty tomatoey goodness . Share with about 3-4 people as app. I had the Paris (Texas) Fried Catfish Platter. The catfish was great. Farm-fresh they say. Thick and tender. Breaded just right. I had more fries - sweet potato, but I had more fun picking at the chili cheese fries. Cole slaw was par but very fresh - I prefer something with more flavor and saucy. Great place. I would go again. Nice neighborhood restaurant / bar. read more

I've been going to Tolbert's for some time and it is one of my favorite establishments. The food is quite good for it's type (Texas food, especially chilli). If you like that sort of food like I do, then you will like it here. They have a nice non-smoking bar. However, I go there mostly for the atmosphere and live music. Tolbert's is a family owned and run restaurant with a rich history, Frank Tolbert's daughter is the co-owner. The staff and patrons are friendly, it feels like a family establishment. Most patrons are easy going, professional, and 30's on up in age. And the live music is awesome, nothing but first rate bands. Bands play Wednesday through Saturday evening. Be sure to check out Voodoo Blue, an amazingly good Stevie Ray Vaughn tribute band. Most of the bands play country rock, texas rock, Beatles, Stones, and just a little smattering of country. read more

With hours to go before my flight I decided to spend some time in historic Grapevine Tolbert's is just the place to stop for a bite of their famous Texas red chili and chiliquiles. It's big, rustic, and definitely family friendly. My server was great. She was fast and friendly, offered some sour cream to temper the heat of the chili, and checked in every few minutes (but not so often as to be obnoxious). This is a good place for casual dining read more

We started coming here a year ago and love it! Great laid back atmosphere, tasty food and good live music at night. You can't beat this downtown Grapevine location! read more

Let me start off by saying that I LOVE their food. The steak, the chili, the tacos, the everything is great! I've had so-so service here. First time I went the food was so ridiculously slow. It was 45 minutes before we got our appetizers, and they were given to us for free. Our waiter also didn't charge us for our margaritas. He was extremely apologetic and made it up to us, and the food was worth the wait. Second time we went, no one ever came to get our orders, and after 15 minutes we left pissed off. Third time, I brought a friend and they also fell in love with the food. However, our waitress was just so-so. Kinda rude and dismissive, but our food came out fast, hot and absolutely delicious. LOVE THE FOOD!!!!!!!! If you can get past the C- service, it's soooooo worth it. read more

My family and I dined at Tolbert's for dinner while staying in Grapevine. My wife and I enjoy drinking local brews, and asked our waitress Kimmy for recommendations. She suggested several, and I chose an IPA from Noble Rey Brewing called "Vertigo". It was tasty and rich, and was very good. This was our first time at Tolbert's so when it came time to order our entrees, I asked for recommendations here as well. I had narrowed my list to a possibility of four items: a bowl of Original Texas Red chili, a bowl of North of the Border chili, the Terlingua Burger, or the Boquillas Burrito. Kimmy suggested this item because it came with some of Tolbert's famous chili inside of the burrito. The entree consisted of Tolbert's chili, lettuce and onions wrapped in 2 flour tortillas and topped with chili con queso served with rice and refried beans. Each bite of the burrito was very unique because you tasted the chili, lettuce and onions. It was delicious! Much different from any of the other burritos that I've ever had, but just as good if not better! My wife ordered the Frito Pie, our daughter had the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, and our son had the Kiddie Burger, but there wasn't anything kiddie about it!! It was just as big as the regular burgers at most other restaurants. I sampled a bit of my wife's Frito Pie and it was very good! The chicken on the Grilled Chicken Sandwich was very tender and juicy, grilled to perfection. As I mentioned earlier this was our first time to Tolbert's, but definitely not our last!! read more

We love Downtown Grapevine. Tolbert's has become on of our favorite restaurants. The service and food are excellent! The onion rings are delicious and the fried shrimp is seasoned perfectly, served with best remoulade. Love the ambiance and our waitress Miley was so charming and professional. Great time. read more

First the food, per everyone's suggestion I had their chili (frito chili pie to be exact), and it was pretty darn good! Their chips and salsa was average, not the best, but tasty none the less. They have a wide variety of beers to make any beer snob happy. Next the atmosphere was very casual, family friendly if it were during the day, and okay for the older kids in the evening. I also enjoyed the acoustic show. Nestled in downtown Grapevine you can definitely walk off your chili hangover looking at all the great shops and eateries. read more

Excellent Ceasars salad and iced tea. excellent service, nice surroundings. Good value.

Tolberts has wonderful beers on tap. Over a dozen local Texas beers and some "Foreign" beers including my favorite (Grapefruit Sculpin - San Diego Love Baby!). Service was very prompt and helpful. Food was good too. The Thursday night band was a little cheezy. I could get over the monkeys all over the stage (actual stuffed monkeys). But when their saxaphone player sang "All about that base" with two balloons blown up and stuffed in her skirt, I had to throw up a little in my mouth. Not that I have any issues with a larger woman, but watching a size 2 woman make fun of larger women while singing was unfortunate. The male lead seemed to enjoy speaking instead of singing. read more

I have been coming to Tolbert's since I was a kid (I remember when they had many locations). Every time I get to Grapevine, I stop at Tolbert's for a big bowl of Texas Red Chili. So good I used to take some back to Wichita if I had a way to take it with. They have live bands in the evening to go with their great food. Definitely a must stop!!! read more

Tolberts is one of the highlights of historic Grapevine. Most every night there's a wait to get a table. Tolberts was inspired in 1976 by a couple that frequented the Terlingua International Chili Cook-off. The menu is authentic, simple and straight forward. If you aren't in the mood for the live music played most week nights, you may want to check their website by heading out there. Overall though, we really enjoy the food and friendly service. http://www.tolbertsrestaurant.com/entertainment/entertainment.htm read more

Ridiculous and constantly updated beer selection. Excellent food selection that seems familiar but absolutely different than any other local place. Excellent and attentive wait staff. Where else can you go and hear live music every night of the week from actually good bands by 8:30 PM every night of the week? read more

Very popular place in Grapevine. Have eaten here many times but first time to review. Chili is very good (history behind it.). Fajitas are good. Jalapeño cream soup is very good. Not impressed with burgers. Not bad, but not great. If you are going for burgers, move along down the street. Tried he queso this time and it was blah. Place has live music, great bar and staff is always friendly. read more

I love this place! But I have to rate it only 3 stars because the Food Quality is the worst. After a half a dozen bad meals, I simply will not eat here anymore. But the MUSIC, Beer selection, Bar, Staff, smoke free space are 5 Stars! Please do something with your kitchen!!! read more

I've been to Tolbert's twice now. Each time I've been satisfied, but not blown away. I love the atmosphere of downtown Grapevine and Tolbert's is a perfect fit. Both times at Tolbert's, I was with a large group (10-20). My first time, I ordered the fried catfish. Again, it was ok, but nothing spectacular. Catfish is one thing I tend to order if I find it on the menu and I compare it to some of the great places I've been. It was not the best by any means, but it was far from the worst. My second, and most recent, trip to Tolbert's had me ordering the Chili cheese burger. The famous chili was good.....had a decent flavor and was very enjoyable. It wasn't, however, as good as I was expecting. A survey of friends at the table showed that everyone enjoyed their food. However, no one was proclaiming the food to be amazing. To me, the most enjoyable aspect of both trips to Tolbert's was the ice cold beer that I was served. A wide selection of beers, a fairly broad range of menu items, and a wonderful atmosphere will find me back at Tolbert's soon, even if the food is nothing spectacular. read more

This restaurant had been recommended by a gent in the tourist office for "good Texas food." We ordered the torpedoes as an appetizer, and both hubby and I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes; he had his with beans and I had mine with a dinner salad. The torpedoes were okay -- not great, but not completely lousy. However, the mashed potatoes were dry and tasteless. The gravy on the chicken fried steak tasted as though it had been made with souring milk -- it had a very odd, unpleasant taste. The chicken fried steak -- when you could get a bite that had some meat in it, not just coating -- was gummy/chewy and flavorless. There must have been a 1/4 cup of water resting in the bottom of my salad bowl. Neither of us could manage more than a few bites. The waiter never questioned why we ate so little of our food. With an iced tea for hubby and one domestic beer for me, it was $42 for mostly inedible food. read more

Had the pot roast, was probably one of the better roasts I've had outside of grandma's kitchen! Lean, tender, and juicy- smothered in brown gravy with smashed potatoes and green beans on the side. Yes, I left feeling very full and needed a nap afterwards but man was it good. The menu is very eclectic, there's a little bit of everything. They tout their chili as a specialty and it seemed they were serving a lot of it the night I visited for dinner. I also saw mexican dishes, lots of fried food, and plenty of "home cooked" options like the meatloaf and pot roast. Everyone at my table ordered something different and we were all pleased with the results. There was live music on certain nights, starting around 8 o'clock. I think a Tom Petty cover band was scheduled the night we visited. Service was overly friendly, our drink cups were never empty. Prices are good for the portions served. read more

In from out of town with my best friend. We decided to stop in and give the restaurant a shot. My friend was super impressed by how clean and orderly the restaurant was. We were greeted politely by the staff. Our waiter Zachary was AWESOME! Extremely polite and helpful, offering to bring samples of the three famous chili's. While all three were delicious, we opted to get the chili cheese dog and the chili burger with the pork red chili. Amazing! The onion rings were wonderful- full of flavor and a nice slice in each ring. We highly recommend. Looks like they regularly have bands on weeknights. We will definitely make a point to come back. read more

I went to Tolbert's for the first time on Sunday for lunch. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich and it was very good. The chicken was tender and cooked well with no pink in the middle. The fries were delicious but I haven't had any fries that I didn't like! On the Beverage side, I had an unsweetened Ice Tea and it was a bit bitter for my liking. I simply had the waiter replace it with another beverage - problem solved. Our waiter was very helpful in the menu selection and did a great job from start to finish. I will visit Tolbert's again. read more

The food is comfort food, service is good. Sitting in the bar is our favorite spot. We are here multiple times a week. My only suggestion is the manager needs to be more customer friendly and let the aervers have brief moment to talk to regulars (when it's not busy) like she does on a regular basis. read more

I have thoroughly enjoyed the live music there, the food is fine but apart from our first server who was very sweet and attentive the service during our last visit was neglectful at best and dismissive to say the least. My friend and her daughter came into join my mother and I for late lunch. Upon their arrival her daughter (who has autism) was nervous about our table at the fireplace. We requested to be reseated and had to do so multiple times because there was no one at the stand. We attempted to speak to a woman who appeared to be the floor manager who told us tantamount to wait for someone to show up at the stand and that it wasn't her problem. We were eventually seated and then quickly forgotten multiple times by our new server who like her colleagues was not busy considering there were only about 2-tables occupied per section of which there were 4 sections. My irritation comes mostly from the lack of consideration for our friend's daughter who was left standing for about 15 minutes when it wasn't busy allowing time for her behavior concerning the fire place to escalate. My request is treat all people like people please (basic respect or at least acknowledgements are do to all people) don't disregard someone based on their perceivable differences just because it takes you the buisness a little extra time to meet someone's needs. read more

We live 1/2 a mile from this place and walk here often. The ambiance is great family/casual atmosphere. They have quirky decorations, live music usually after 8:30pm. They have and excellent draught beer menu--Franconia Dunkel (McKinney TX) is one of the best dark beers locally brewed. They also have some local Grapevine Craft Brewery beers. Food is always consistent and very good. Teacher's salad is a very fresh, tasty salad topped with excellent sirloin steak. Burgers are good, as is their steak quesadilla. Also Lacuna's (sp?) Chicken platter is always an excellent grilled chicken platter. Sometimes it's busy and their is a wait--usually not more than 15 minutes. Service is usually above average and helpful. What are you waiting for--go! read more

The chili is delicious! I was very impressed with all of the food here. I went here with a group of people and we sampled many different things from the menu. They also had some of the best onion rings I have ever had! Service was also good. Highly recommend! read more

What a great experience this was today. My boyfriend and I stopped in late this afternoon for some appetizers. We shared a burger with onion rings along with some chips and salsa. I must say, there really was not one thing I could suggest to make it a better meal. It was fresh, hot, all the fixings were fresh. Even the coating on the onion rings which sometimes can taste like older grease - nothing! Our waiter was pleasant, stopped by just enough times and the prices were reasonable. I have only been there one other time to listen to some music but I will definitely be coming back again to eat there too. read more

Took a large group here on Sunday. We called ahead and the staff was extremely helpful. We sat as soon as we arrived. Our waitress was wonderful. That is the only reason I gave them 2 stars. The food was awful. I ordered a Fredrick burger, done meduim. It came out well done and cold. My onion rings were ice cold and soggy and my soup was barely warm. My cousins fish was so over cooked she could barely eat it and it was also I've cold. Out of 11 of us at the table no one enjoyed their food it was all ice cold and way over cooked. We asked to speak to the Manger who never appeared. We won't be back and there are plenty of other places for anyone that is hungry to enjoy I would recommend trying then before you head there. read more

I am quickly becoming a regular for lunch at Tolbert's. I am absolutely crazy for their chicken fried steak sandwich, and of course I substitute sweet potato fries for regular. I can't wait until the weather cools off a little bit, so I can sample some of their famous chili. I also really appreciate their zeal for live music. They have a band play nearly every night. The vibe there is very casual, but there is a huge stage overlooking the dining area. Very cool place that happens to serve some great food. read more

If you don't try the chili, you are making a mistake! A true "Texas" chili with a deep and dark red tomato base built up by layers of flavor from dry spices. For those of you that know chili, you know that by adding fresh chili peppers, the heat has more of a "creep up" effect. By using dried spices, the heat stays consistent, and you know what you are getting with every bite. For those of you that like to live on the wild side, you can add the 5-alarm sauce (which from my taste buds most likely contains a large amount of habenero seed or it's oil extract). But beware, a couple mixed-in fork dips from the five-alarm sauce will dramatically change the spiciness of your Texas Red! The thing I like the most about the chili is that it comes with plenty of ground beef, and I and I like the fact that the original comes without beans. Wash this down with a cold beer or margarita (or both) and you will be doing alright! Did I mention they have great live music regularly? I went on a Sunday night, the band was great, and it was clear that this was the place to be on an otherwise dead evening in Grapevine. read more

Came here to try their famous chili and sadly, I wasn't all that impressed. I mean it was pretty good but not as good as the ones we make at home. Also tried their guacamole burger and the chili burger. The burger itself was pretty good. The fries that came with them were yummy! They were nice and crisp but meaty as well. They also had a live band playing when we visited. This is a nice casual place to hang out, but we did have to wait a while to get a table and I don't think I'll be coming back because of that but if I'm ever in the area, at least I know this is a decent place to go to. read more

Tolbert's is a nice place to go most anytime. I live about a mile from here so its very convenient for my wife and I. It is located on main st in Grapevine so all the wineries are within walking distance. They always have a band playing around 9pm at night which is a little late for me but i usually stay until 10pm or so. There food is good and the drinks are priced right. There is a mixed older crowd that frequents here and i have never seen any problems. Tolbert's has been in business since the 70's so they must be doing something right. read more

Maybe I hit them on an off day. Atmosphere was good, wait staff is what earned this place the stars it got. Lauren, who confessed was on her third day, was excellent. Did the advised, got the bowl of red chili, which, in my opinion, was missing something ( and not the heat, the 5-alarm probably wouldn't have helped ). Needed more cumin and base notes desperately. It was good, but didn't come within a thousand miles of what I expected from a shop with Terlingua signs posted all over. Fredricksburger was good, over cooked for a medium. Fries were good, but few in number and the side order of rings, meant to be shared, totaled 9 rings. For the amount paid, it was nearly offensive. Again, its possible I hit them on a bad day, a 7-top at 3pm on a busy pre-Christmas Saturday. But I don't believe I'll give them the chance to prove me wrong. read more
